Cecilia Sentenell has been chosen by the reputed rake, the Earl of Arandale to be his bride. But Cecilia has other plans for her life and they don't include Arandale, much to her father's dismay. Cecilia got a bad impression of Arandale when she saw him with his mistress in the park. The rejection causes havoc in the earl's life. Yet Cecilia's rejection makes Arandale aware of her as he had not been before and her criticism makes him determined to be a man she would admire, the man he was before a tragic event made him lose his way. But dangerous schemes are soon to affect Cecilia's life in other ways. Her father's heir, Alex Shackel, has developed a sinister plan to force Cecilia to become his bride. Cecilia turns to Lord Arandale when Shackel's schemes threaten her very life.
My love of reading and writing goes back to my discovery of Nancy Drew, The Dana Girls and Judy Bolton mysteries, which I read by the truckload.
From those early books I went on to read the classics and alternating with classics I would read gothics, and it was "Rebecca", which revived a dream of childhood to become a writer. A letter from Daphne Du Maurier, in reply to my letter to her spurred me into writing a gothic novel. After that I became addicted to Regency romances,
“Character consists on what you do on the third and fourth tries.” James A. Michener Lord Justin Alanston, 9th Earl of Arandale has a very scandalous reputation through the ton. Known for his drinking, gambling, and general debauchery, he is considered one of the best catches in the higher social circles. In short, it was considered by many that he was lacking very much in character. This puts Lord Alanston in a precarious situation as his soiled reputation is, for the most part, undeserved. True, he has had a mistress for the last few years. It might even be said that he flaunted the illicit relationship. That, in itself, shouldn’t have affected his reputation, as most young gentlemen of the aristocracy, whether married or not, had one or more courtesans at their beck and call. He made a deathbed promise to his father that he would be married at thirty; that is the age he is now. Finding the right woman to spend his life with is no easy matter. She has to be intelligent, refined, and not bad to look at over the breakfast table. The aristocracy is full of eligible young women that would jump at the chance to be his wife. He, however, wants more. He sets his sights on Miss Cecilia Sentenell, a nineteen-year-old debutant to London society. To his utter surprise, consternation, and chagrin, she refused his marriage proposal. Clearly, he has underestimated her and his job to convince her to accept is going to be a rough one. What must he do to transform from her nightmare to her knight in shining armor?
This is a historic romance that opens the doors to the most exclusive social events of Georgian England. The gossip and backroom intrigues are shared with the reader, making you feel like the fly on the wall. I must also say that un peu d’erotisme could have made this a five star story.
I found this a really good book. Cecelia is an extremely strong woman and has views on propiety that Lord Arandale skirts with his mistress. He takes to Cecelia with how she conducts herself in society and attempts to make her his own very unsuccessfully at first. Having her deny his suit he attempts to court her at a house party at his sisters residence. There are other factors in attempting to deny their happiness in the forms of Lady Rolande and her cousin Alex Shakel who wants her inheritance as well as her family home. Can it all be resolved
I enjoy it and it can be read by children under 18. I being well over like passion in my regency books. So this was different and good. Read it in one day. You will enjoy it and your children 16 and up will to. But like I said I am an adult and this would be more on a teens level or an adult who don't enjoy sensual scenes. Ms D. From New York City
A fast paced exciting story with a complex plot and a plethora of interesting characters, I expect the villain also murdered a few more people but they got forgotten
I thought it would never end! It is as if this author wrote the exact same thoughts several different times in different ways in order to add pages to this story that could very well be written in one-sided of what it is. It really could have been a halfway decent story but for the on and on and on endless writing about nothing. So with a great yawn, I would not recommend this book.
