Eighteen years ago, the Lull Lane Dollmaker made ten families porcelain dolls as gifts to welcome their children into the world. But what these families didn’t know was that the souls of the lullabies were poured into each one as they were created. Now, the Dollmaker is coming to collect.
One. By. One.
Briar Hartley is the queen of Wisteria High—rich, ruthless, and devastatingly pretty. She breaks hearts for sport, ruins reputations with a whisper, and collects ex-boyfriends like trophies. Apologies aren’t in her vocabulary; the world exists to serve her, and everyone else is just background noise.
She’s never given a second thought to the strange doll that’s been perched on her bedroom shelf since she was a baby. Not until it starts to whisper.
As the rhymes grow darker, Briar’s perfect body begins to betray her. Fine white fur creeps across her skin no matter how often she shaves it. Her teeth sharpen into eager little knives. Hunger coils inside her, curling tighter each day, begging for something warm and red.
No amount of designer clothes or sugar-sweet smiles can hide what she’s becoming.
Because Briar Hartley was always a predator at heart. Now she’s just grown the claws to match—and she can’t wait to carve people open, just to see how beautifully they’ll bleed.
Fairytales never promised happy endings.
Some dolls are made for play. Others are made for blood...

See How They Run is book 4 in the Nightmares On Lull Lane Series. This was my first Ellie Sanders read and her writing is fantastically descriptive! With Briar, the apple doesn't seem to fall far from the tree. She is such a vile monster. I would say she is just as bad, if not worse than her parents. While reading through Briar's transformation, I was constantly second guessing what was actually going on. I kept wondering was Briar actually physically changing or was it all in her head?! See How They Run is definitely a psychological mind game!
Be sure to read The Dollmaker first, and check your TWs for this unhinged series!
The doll if you can call it that is a mouse. Briar is a bully, her perfect life starts to go downhill, her impeccable structure fracturing along the way, as the doll takes a hold of her psyche and transforms her into a creature of vengeance against those who never acknowledged their own failings.
This one isn’t pitch but it is a real doozy of a psychological thriller. Ellie’s written words, works to get in your head with effective visuals and explanation drawing you to the finale.
SEE HOW THEY RUN by Ellie Sanders - 4th Book in the NIGHTMARES ON LULL LANE SERIES. Is nowhere near dark nor pitch black. More like thriller.
TRIGGERS: Alcohol abuse / intoxication Bullying Drink spiking Enucleation Hair shaving as a means of humiliation Physical assault Sexual assault (in the form of exposure without consent)

PARENTS - Doesn’t Say
Eeeeew! I’m so glad Briar got what she deserved. Her self-entitled, stuck up attitude had me wanting to jump through my phone and knock her out!
What she did to that poor girl at the beginning of the book actually made me tear up. The bullying was so cruel and over the top, it’s something that would stick with anyone for life.
It took me a bit longer to finish this one; it felt like it dragged before the real action kicked in. This is another story in the series where I feel the parents’ deaths came a little too easy. I also would’ve liked to know more about who her parents were to compare it to the first story. There were no names for them.
But I loved the slow unraveling of Briar’s character. Watching her lose her mind piece by piece, the way the doll pushed her over the edge was pure perfection. In the end, it was an okay read overall, but that breakdown made it worth it.
*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review - my opinion is my own 🖤
Book 4 in the Nightmare on Lull Lane universe and… whew, this one had me feeling all the emotions. I went in blind (never having read any of Ellie’s stuff before), but trust me — that’s about to change real quick.
Look, i’ll be the first to admit it took me a bit longer to get through this one, as i found the beginning dragged a little before the real action hit, and like the other stories, I felt the parents’ deaths came way too easy.
I for one, would’ve loved a bit more detail on who they were, especially compared to the first story since there were no names ever mentioned aside from mum and dad.
Highlights of the novella? It will have to be Briar’s breakdown. It was PURE PERFECTION. Watching her slowly unravel, losing her senses bit by bit and the way the mouse doll just pushed her over the edge...it was a triumph, making that ending all the more worth it.
For a start I was so fkn glad to see that Briar got what she deserved, and the writing was quite enjoyable, highly descriptive and equally entertaining.
It was a journey i was keen to see her endure for all her self entitled, stuck up attitudes, which had me wanting to jump through my kindle and smack some sense into her! 😤
What she did to that poor girl at the start actually made me tear up, for the bullying was next-level cruel, and its the kind that sticks with you for life.
See How They Run is pure gold, and no one can tell me otherwise.
The level of detail in this short novella is impeccable and oh-so juicy. Every single scene is layered with tension, dread, and that deliciously dark psychological edge that gets under your skin. Everything Briar goes through feels like a descent, a raw, terrifying, and mesmerizing journey through fear, vanity, and cruelty. You feel every heartbeat, every gasp, every moment of unraveling right alongside her.
And that ending… oh, that ending. It’s nothing short of glorious. The transformation, the retribution, the poetic justice, it hits in all the right places. What makes this one so unique is that the Doll isn’t the main focus this time, Briar is. And she is something else entirely. Twisted, beautiful, manipulative, evil, even, but somewhere along the way, you start rooting for her. You want her to win. You want her to burn it all down.
This series, Nightmare on Lull Lane, is absolute perfection for dark fiction lovers. It’s unsettling, intoxicating, and haunting in the best possible way.
Do yourself a massive favor and read this series, it’s wickedly smart, beautifully dark, and will leave your heart racing long after the last page.
Wow! This was by far the most tame book in the Nightmares on Lull Lane shared world series thus far. There was also no spice in this one, but I found myself not minding one bit, as there needed to be significant character development throughout in order to truly appreciate Briar‘s transformation. She went from preppy bully to grotesque predator and deserved every bit of it. I found myself fascinated with her animalistic physical transformation. The way Ellie‘s descriptive writing was able to allow me to visualize the changes occurring to Briar in detail had me not wanting to put this one down. I do wish it was darker and that Sav’s revenge was more drawn out, however, I was on the edge of my seat for Briar’s descent into madness. Overall, I definitely would recommend this one for those who enjoy more psychological thrillers.
"The scratching starts the same way headaches do, with a suggestion. A suspicion. A fleck of soundlodged behind the wallpaper of morning."
This story is a completely different take on the Nightmares of Lull Lane. The haunted doll, is there only this time our FMC doesn't deserve any sympathy. We don't hope they just get revenge for the sins their parents committed. We hope Karma hits them with the same terror that they'd deserve and boy we are not disappointed.
I thoroughly enjoyed this, it was great little horror novella and I gave me the exact kind of dread feeling I want when I read a horror book.
This one was supposed interesting!! So the other dolls you got the dolls POV, but in this one. Nope, you just got Briar POV and just watching how she starts to slowly lose herself to the doll is creepy on its own! I feel that it was repetitive, but then isn't that how most people go crazy? It's just small things, and each chapter you just kept seeing the same things but with a different change. Queen Bee learned a thing or two, but clearly not the way she should of. I honestly didn't like Briar at all, but that's because I can't stand mean girls. So to me, she got what she deserved. Another great book from this series! I knew this one would be creepy because of how the doll was described.
Book four, and we’re still on some wild rollercoaster of a ride! This story follows Briar, the top girl, Queen of her peers, prettiest of them all & absolute savage if she wants to pull someone down a few pegs. This one’s psychologically intriguing with Briars inner monologue dealing with her current furry issue, as well as dark with the gory details. By the end, I genuinely felt sympathy for Briar compared to her attitude in the beginning. Definitely recommend this for others who enjoy the genre.
Thank you to Ellie for allowing me to adv read See How They Run!
The Dollmaker gets her revenge again. Briar is the Queen Bee mean girl at school and nothing stands in her way. She slowly starts to change, and not for the better. She becomes more animalistic. We don't know who her parents are but we don't have to worry about that.
HOLY BLIND MICE y'all seriously this story was so fricken twisted, unhinged, gruesome, and y'all did I say twisted!!! But y'all seriously it's soooo fricken good. Briar that girl is something else y'all seriously I have no words except...
If you’ve ever read a book by Ellie Sanders you should know you always need to CHECK TRIGGER WARNINGS. This book is no different, even though personally found it tamer than most books I’ve read by Ellie. This book is very heavy on the bullying aspects.
This is one of the more psychological books I’ve read by Ellie. It’s twisted. It’s raw. Has you scratching your head, in a good way. You definitely feel the mental chaos Briar is going through in this story. I love how it is written and the revenge in the end is what I know we were all wanting. I do wish there was just a tad more detail stretched out in the ‘revenge’ part.
“I am not undone, not broken. I am whole in a way I never was before. And in this darkness, I finally belong.”
I can’t wait to read more of this series. 4.5⭐️ (rounded up to a 5)
This book feels quite different from the earlier ones in the series. It’s less dark, and honestly, it didn’t grab me as much. The story is well written, with good character development and a clear plot, but it just didn’t have the same intensity as the previous books.
Brier’s journey is still interesting, and the buildup of tension works well, but I felt the real impact came only near the end. The last 10–20 pages were great — intense and satisfying — but I wanted more of that throughout.
I’m giving it 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ because it’s solid overall, just not as thrilling or dark as I expected.
I wasn't sure what to expect with this book but it was good. Briar Hartley is a bully and doesn't care who she has to step on to get ahead. Over time, she seems to be losing herself and believes she is going insane. What she held as her perfect appearance starts to betray her. Watching her downfall throughout the book brings a whole new meaning to happily ever after!!!
(Warning: This is NOT a dark romance where everyone is happy. This is a true splatterpunk erotic horror series with scenes that are very heavy. Your mental health matters so make sure to read the trigger warnings carefully!)
This is such a dark story with a twist you never saw coming! It sucked me in instantly and I couldn’t stop reading it! Absolutely a big recommendation if you love unexpected endings and a bully as MC 🤭🖤
This book was captivating without the spicy elements, fitting in with the central theme of lullabies in the neighborhood on Lull Lane. It does feel a little different than the first two prior books in the series, as this doll featured is a unique mouse doll, but the overall dread feels matched as part of the series. Briar’s story is one that’ll have you page-turning to find out how the climax is going to unravel. The overall connection to Savannah is a nail-biter at the end that had me blaming the parents for everything. Including their wicked child’s behavior.
•spoilers•
Maya is the new kid in school, but that won’t subject her from being the target during a party where Briar decides to spike her drink. While clearly incoherent, he has one of his minions shave off her hair as a joke. Briar is the kind of girl that takes pride in her looks. Following strict routines to keep her complexion perfect. But one day as she is doing her routine, she notices an odd patch of hair on her armpit. Thinking it’s a spur of puberty, she shaves it and continues on with the thought lurking her mind. Until she realizes more hair growth that appears like fur.
The hair continues to grow across her body like a fur she can’t escape from. Every time she shaves it off, it regrows, bringing forth more new patches with a pale, leathery flesh underneath that doesn’t appear to look like her normal skin. And what’s worse is the unsettling scratching noises that won’t stop echoing in her ear. But even that doesn’t stop her from being a complete bully to others, even going so far as to admit that the prank on Maya wasn’t just a joke. In retaliation, the hair continues to grow, she reeks of wet dog, and everyone around her knows that something is wrong. The only thing she finds comfort in is the mouse doll that arrived at the house before she was born.
But with her sinister changes, she discovers the doll is truly unique. As it’s not just a doll, but a morbid blueprint for her prominent future. The life she used to know is about to become a deranged nightmare. But before it can truly take over, she wants to show her parents what their perfect little princess looks like before she falls prey to the changes completely.
This was a splendid and satisfactory story of how karma can truly be a bitch. Briar has always been at the top for her whole life and after one mistake, can watch her life crumble in a blink of an eye. I love when justice is served on the bully in the most insane way because it’s like a punch in the gut to their egotistic lifestyle and causes them to feel human again. A fantastic inclusion in the series from Sanders and I look forward to reading more from the author in the near future.
this one was a challenge, and a brand new experience for me! it was so new and unlike anything i've ever read before,it's honestly a head scratcher,i don't know how to feel! and this seemed to be a general theme!!
this to me feels more like a thriller and definitely doesn't speak to erotic horror or horror in my opinion,i pride myself on being honest and as somebody who is deeply obssesed with the dark side this was super tame in comparison,it's crazy because i think i enjoyed it (?) but it also left me confused in terms of relevance to the greater storyline if that makes sense?
to me,this story doesn't really fit within lull lane,i don't know what i expected from the mouse doll to begin with so this was new.. very new. and i guess wether you like this style is subjective.
it's a three for me because it was actually well written and a slow burn (sometimes i love, sometimes i hate) i missed the addition of additional characters to be honest, just following one character isn't my favourite and i don't feel like we get a great deal of character development other than 'the change' idk it gives thriller to me,it gives creepy vibes! so i guess a great spooky season read,if you're into more fantasy you'll actually like this i feel & i would actually argue you could read this at any point in the storyline of lull lane as a whole as it's not overly relevant.
overall i'd say it's a 3⭐️ i didn't love and i didn't hate,it just left me a bit confused, but overall the story was written well and was definitely unique, got you thinking aswell!
Briar Hartley is the kind of girl who ruled the hallways in the 90s— all glossy hair, sharpened smiles, and venomous charm. Think Regina George, but dipped in acid and polished with the unhinged shine of Jawbreaker’s post-Fern makeover. The kind of girl who thrives on control… right up until it starts rotting beneath her French-tipped fingers.
When, the doll, Lucille’s tale begins, the mask Briar wears starts to crack; slowly, grotesquely, horrifically. Her perfect life curdles into something rancid as the whisper of vengeance begins gnawing at her edges. We don’t yet know who the Hartleys are from book 1 (and that’s going to drive me insane until I finish this series), but what we do know is this: Briar’s descent is a masterclass in psychological decay.
This story festers. All 108 pages slow bleed into mania, a fever dream where vanity and narcissism share the same face. It’s The Tell-Tale Heart reborn in a high-school queen bee’s psyche: no corpse under the floorboards this time, just the steady, maddening scratching at her own fractured perfection echoing in her skull.
If I had one wish? I’d make her parents suffer more. They’re the architects of her porcelain monstrosity, and I wanted their screams to soundtrack her unraveling.
Verdict: A gorgeously agonizing psychological horror that’s nested with decay and obsession. Perfect for readers who crave their terror slow, methodical, and laced with madness.
This book was very different from the first 3 in the series, yet equally as spooky in its own way.
The FMC in this book is the typical high school bully. She owns the school corridors, and has everyone quite literally shaking in fear when she passes, eagerly trying to avoid eye contact with her to steer clear of her wrath. She is cruel intentionally, feared deliberately and feels zero guilt or remorse for her actions.
She sets up the most soul destroying events to show up a new girl at school, and when it is shared around the students via video, she feels pride for causing the ultimate humiliation to her.
After this event, she is horrified to wake up and discover a patch of fur on her arm, which she swiftly shaves off. Then she comes face to face with her mouse like porcelain doll, and let’s just say this is the start of her fall from grace.
As always, there is the link back to Savannah too, and her parents who were involved her attack.
It seems like the mouse doll is out to seek the ultimate revenge for all of their wicked ways.
I loved reading about the de-throning of the FMC in this story because she was such a vile character, and fantastically written as a villain and bully too. I strongly disliked her.
It wasn’t quite as horrifying as the first few books, however it still managed to give off plenty of spooky vibes and spine tingling moments.
See How They Run is book four of the Nightmares of Lull Lane, written by Ellie Sanders. There are 11 books in this series; aside from the first and last books, they can be read in any order. They are standalones, but they do refer back to a central plot established in book one. All the books in the series are horror, and some may edge toward splatterpunk. All of the books are considered novellas. I love this concept a lot and look forward to reading the entire series!
In See How They Run, we are introduced to Briar, a stuck-up, spoiled rich girl who loves to bully those around her. That is, until Savannah’s cursed doll forces a change in her. You see, Briar’s doll is a furry mouse head on a doll’s body. It’s a bit of foreshadowing as to what is to come. The mental and physical change in Briar was brilliantly done!!
This is definitely one of my favorites out of the five I have read so far. Watching Briar’s mind slowly regress into only primal urges was fantastic. The description of constantly trying to shave her body to rid herself of the fluffy hair - yesssss!!!
Thanks to Ellie Sanders for gifting me an eARC of See How They Run. I am leaving this review voluntarily. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This one wasn't for me. Our main character undergoes quite the transformation - for over 90 minutes, we read in 1st person how this stereotypical 90s TV mean girl becomes a literal rodent.
I did not align with the writing of this novel. I found it written in a way that tried to be excessively pretentious and erudite, but failed at each instance. The repeated similes and metaphors didn't land for me. There were repeated instances I was confused by the imagery the author was trying to lay out - More often than not, I didn't follow her narrative in the slightest.
I don't believe this was edited as well as it could have been. For example, "...clutched her 'metaphysical' pearls..." The author wanted to say, "...her metaphorical pearls..." I assume, but the editing failed to correct this blatant error.
Additionally, each doll so far was an actual porcelain doll. This was a 'ratty' cloth figurine. I don't recall in book one the author mentioning a doll that wasn't actually a doll. I think the author went off the storyline - by the time I gave up on this one, we hadn't seen any punishment of the parents, which I thought was the whole premise.
Ellie not only wrote a story that involves the vengeance of Savannah…she wrote the story of a day of reckoning for a mean girl.
Briar is the heartless, spoiled mean princess of Wisteria High. Humiliating and bullying those she deems below her while keeping her name clean. The “picture of perfection” physically, she is the product of parents. That is until something strange happens. Briar descent into madness…or just her true self emerging while extracting revenge for Savannah as she learns their part on that fateful, nightmare filled night is something I will never forget.
This is one of those stories that plays out like the shadows in the corner of your room while you afflicted with sleep paralysis. It’s terrifying and unsettling yet you have to keep watching and reading because you have to know the ending.
I loved this story so much. Ellie made the main character just as despicable as the parents but on a different level. The flow, the descent into madness, the finale - it’s all perfection and I will never look at a mouse without thinking of Briar again.
I am so grateful for this ARC because oh my GOD! The way that Ellie was so descriptive with Briar's transformation was BEAUTIFUL. This felt like a thriller over a horror and it was fucking... I don't even know... intoxicating? Addicting?? Like Briar (the FMC) got what was coming, she was so cruel to that poor girl in the beginning, and seeing her go from a bully and a self-entitled mean girl to a horrifying creature was so satisfying.
I couldn't get enough of this at all and I almost didn't finish it because I didn't want the story to end, but I'm so glad I did. 5 stars for sure. Ellie's writing style is beautiful and something I'll for sure be reading some of her other books!

Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice: 0 spice, but the horror elements definitely make up for it I promise!!!! Dark: 🖤🖤🖤🖤 Recommend: 🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽
Mice... Mice... Mice!!!!!
Okay, so can I just say Ellie Sanders wrote this, so you know it is going to be an absolute trip and a horror story all on its own.
This story was a nightmare all on its own. The girl who strives to be perfect in every way just to make her parents happy. First class B not to mention a big bully!! But, she loses herself in the process. Quite literally. IYKYK. SQUEEK!!
Once she loses herself and the transformation begins. This book left me with chills and the ending!!! The tension is perfect.
OMG! OMG! The things horror movies are made of. I definitely can't get enough of this book or the series.
Definitely recommend this book and the whole series.
Okay besties, "See How They Run" took the Nightmares on Lull Lane series in a different direction. Ellie Sanders gave us Briar Hartley... rich, ruthless, and mean-girl royalty... and then ripped her shiny little world to shreds. This one leans way more into the horror and psychological revenge side, with zero spice but plenty of twisted “WTF is happening?!” energy. It’s eerie, gross, and oddly poetic watching her transformation unravel... like karma finally put on lip gloss and claws. Compared to the first three books, this felt tamer in darkness but heavier on the psychological bite. Though I love the darker side in my reads, this still gave an unsettling, skin-crawling ride that sticks with you. The Dollmaker’s curse just keeps getting creepier... and I can’t look away.
My Ratings: ⭐ 3.5/5 ▪︎ 🥵 0/5
🥀 For my rating scale breakdown, head over to my Goodreads &/or Amazon profile! 🖤
Book 4 of NOLL, and another twisted one for sure! Briar's a mean girl through and through, perfection at its queen bee best. So when others start to notice her..changes..it worries them more than scares them. At the start Briar treats the change this way; "Bronze to hide the wrong. Powder to set the lie. Highlighter to dazzle away any unwanted questions. My cheeks go from animal to golden ruthless and back again when I turn my head." Their used to her wrath, but this sharper version of her is unhinged and everyone acts like you would with a wounded animal. She was the definition of prim and proper; 'Let everyone see what happens when you push perfection too far'. Her transformation to carry out her doll's role from the Dollmaker is quite interesting!I had to reread some parts several times to make sure I really understood what was happening to Briar 😅 Thank you @hotsteamywriter for the privilage to be part of your ARC team!

⚠️ Please check the trigger warnings before reading — YOU’VE BEEN WARNED! ⚠️
See How They Run by Ellie Sanders (Book 4 in the series) is another fast-paced, twisted addition that completely pulled me in. The writing is sharp, dark, and addictive in the best way. This one felt a little less dark than the first three books, but I still loved it.
Briar Hartley is a spoiled rich girl who bullies everyone around her—until her creepy, possessed mouse doll, Lucille, starts turning her into a mouse. Watching her transformation was horrifying and oddly satisfying; Briar truly got what she deserved, and honestly, so did her parents. I loved how Briar desperately tried to hide what she was becoming. Even shaving the fur off her body in denial and watching her lose her mind was perfection. Ellie Sanders nailed the slow, eerie unraveling of Briar’s perfect life.
Highly recommend!
Thank you to Ellie Sanders for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Please Note: This book and series has a massive trigger warning list and there are some heavy actions that aren't for everyone!
See How They Run is the fourth book in the Nightmares on Lull Lane multi author shared world. Everyone knows the story of the Three Blind Mice, the farmer's wife, her carving knife and three chopped tails, but what happens when the mice turn dark and seek revenge for Savannha. While there isn't a lot of murder, there is plenty of mayhem and psychological warfare ensues. I found this installment into the series slower paced then the previous and also difficult to stay engaged with Briar's story. However, Briar's story is definitely needed to add some contrast and evolve the entire series further. Do not scratch this one off your reading list, the mice may like to see how you run!
