Why isn’t volume 1 in Goodreads? stg the quality of the listings on this site gets worse every passing day. Enshittification. But that’s not related to the story, right.

Book 2 goes deeper into Jens’ cursed background — how he came to be the sole human inhabitant of Fesca island. Sorcerers (ドロメ) once again come into play to twist human wishes and inflict suffering on them by granting their wish. In this case, the villagers wished for Jens to come back to life, and gave up their hometown in return: a high price, but as the sorcerer pointed out, that’s the price for the return of a life.

No one could enter the village from there on out who wasn’t already there to begin with, and the villagers could only leave the island on the day of the new moon. And if the villagers left the island and failed to return on the same day (how is this defined. Do they have watches? Does the dorome have a watch?), they can’t return to the island either … except.

Jens alone could bring one person to the island: his spouse. And Jens alone had to return to the island on the same day, because he would die if he didn’t.

Jens and Van grow even closer, and one of the most touching scenes in this volume is when Van “pays” for one day of his voice with some of his hair, so he and Jens are finally able to talk, and they valiantly try to stay awake so they can keep talking. But another touching scene is Jens’ former childhood friend sending him a book for sign language so Van and Jens can talk without Van needing to carry paper and writing utensils around.

There isn’t much to say other than with Jens and Van’s horrid pasts uncovered, hopefully the future (volume 3) is brighter. And we can finally get to the ヒーリング part of the ヒーリングファンタジー that this series promised, because fuckme but Van’s situation and past in volume 1 was DEPRESSING AF.

Oh and also that fuck but that sorcerer who’d granted the Fesca villagers’ wish for Jens to return to life had a fucking creepy af design ahaha no thank u
