For a man who claimed he wanted revenge, Rowan King spent an awful lot of time improving Tessa's quality of life.

The fake dating was contractual.

The evidence was circumstantial.

The yearning, however, was beyond a reasonable doubt.

What worked for me
(aka: Your Honour, the evidence is overwhelmingly in favour of this romance)

The chemistry absolutely carried this book.

Rowan and Tessa have the kind of dynamic where every conversation feels like verbal sparring disguised as flirting. Their banter is effortless, funny and full of the kind of dry humour that had me highlighting way more dialogue than I normally do.

Rowan King is also firmly joining the ranks of my favourite caretaker MMCs. He isn't the type to make grand speeches or pour his heart out. He notices everything, says very little and somehow turns dry sarcasm into a love language. Every grand gesture arrives disguised as mild irritation and I fell for it every single time.

The fake dating was exactly what I wanted. Add in forced proximity, mutual pining, one bed, domestic moments and enough yearning to keep me happily seated and I was having far too much fun to question whether every plot point would hold up under cross-examination.

And then there's Waffles.

No notes. Perfect character. Employee of the month.

Where it lost me
(aka: Objection sustained....but only slightly)

The Mystery Was Bigger Than the Reveal

The central breakup mystery is built up for a large portion of the book so I naturally spent half my reading experience creating increasingly elaborate conspiracy theories. When the truth finally arrived, it made emotional sense and fit the characters beautifully but it didn't quite match the level of suspense the story had built around it.

The Plot Quietly Took a Back Seat

The IOU network and revenge premise are such a fun hook but somewhere along the way I realised I genuinely stopped caring whether any of it would stand up in court.

Normally that would be a problem.

Here? Rowan and Tessa were too busy making me laugh, pine and kick my feet so I willingly accepted the distraction.

I Wanted Just One More Chapter

The emotional payoff worked for me but I wanted a little more time living in it before the story wrapped up. I wanted one extra slice of domestic happiness to soak in everything we'd spent the entire book building toward.

Final Thoughts

Against all odds, Rowan King turned dry sarcasm, excessive competence and chronic problem-solving into a wildly effective romantic strategy.

The plot occasionally made me raise an eyebrow, I wanted the emotional conversations to happen sooner and I definitely could've used one more chapter at the end. But Rowan and Tessa's chemistry carried this book from start to finish. The banter sparkled, the yearning delivered and every quiet act of care hit harder than a dozen grand declarations.

Final Verdict

4.25 ⭐️ - The evidence suggests Rowan King was deeply unserious about this revenge business.

Case dismissed. He was in love, Your Honour.

Tropes and Vibes:
• Fake Dating
• One Bed
• Forced Proximity
• Mutual Pining
• Caretaker MMC
• Acts of Service = Love Language
• Dry Wit & Top-Tier Banter
• Domestic Yearning
• Law School Romance
• Rescue Dog Steals Every Scene

☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

Pre-read:

Reporting for jury duty in the case of Enemies Who Need to Kiss vs. Common Sense.

The evidence is circumstantial but if there's mutual pining with the fake-dating, the verdict is not guilty 🤞🏻✨️

I have a soft spot for the IOU series- Maverick and Ainsley were my first introduction to Kristy Marie's writing and I have been obsessed with her work ever since.

So when Kristy shared that she was bringing us back to that world with the IOU Kings series- I was absolutely giddy about it.

Objection Overruled is the first book in that series and it follows Rowan- the first guy to take over Maverick's IOU empire- and Tessa, the one that clearly got away at one point. Now if you haven't ready any of Kristy's books before the whole premise about the IOU's may not make sense so I personally would recommend reading both IOU and You Owe Me before starting this book. I also like to also point out that this is not a typical "rom-com"... when most people think of rom-coms they think of light and bubbly, silly banter and maybe some outrageous scenarios. That's not this book. This book definitely still packs the laugh out loud banter and but it's also got more of a darker edge and aura to it.

There were so many things that I really enjoyed about this book- the tensions, the banter, the intrigue. Kristy strings us along with these little breadcrumbs of what had happened between Rowan and Tessa and how that heartbreak affected each of these characters kind of giving a little bit of a hate to love action. Rowan had this quiet yet intimidating and authoritative persona, a man of action over words. Then there was Tessa- she tries to make herself as small as possible, to fly under the radar- but there is nothing about her witt, intelligence or presence that is meant to go unnoticed. Tessa was destined to stand out.

But there was also something about this book that kept me from completely falling for these characters. I enjoyed the interactions between Tessa and Rowan- the way that they both kept pretending that the love they once shared wasn't still lingering below the surface even after years apart. It just felt like something was missing and I never really got fully connected to the characters. I love where they end up but I wish a little more of their past and upbringings were explored or explained.

Nevertheless- I can't wait to see where this series is going to take us!

I was blessed to read an Advanced Reader Copy of Objection Overruled. All opinions are my own and freely given.

Rowan King owns the world, and he knows it. He inherited an empire, and he has honed it into a weapon where debts are gained in IOUs and paid in favors. He doesn't take chances. He only brokers in certainties. Until her. Tessa Whitmore. Sharp as a tack, witty as hell, conductor of the Hot Mess Express. And the one who broke his heart. When Tessa drops back into Rowan's lap, revenge is all he wants. When she ends up in his debt, Rowan thinks long and hard about how to call in his IOU. But when he does, bringing Tessa along as his fake girlfriend to a partner retreat, there is more on the line for him than he would care to admit. And Tessa is a wildcard he's not sure he can control. Stuck in close quarters, Rowan and Tessa are forced to confront all the feelings left rolling between them, and the fact that first loves run deep. But Tessa has always been fiercely loyal yet hard to keep. And Rowan will have to use every ounce of his cunning to outwit Tessa and bring her home. Tessa may think she's saving him, but Rowan has never been afraid to overrule her objections. He just might have to fight dirty first.

This book was so good! I loved the 21 Rumor series. So to get Rowan's point of view was super fun. I loved his character a lot. Despite his outward facade, he was always looking out for Tessa, protecting her, building her up. I loved how he shut down the partners when they started to get inappropriate. And I loved how he fell so, so hard. His immense tolerance of Tessa's ridiculousness was commendable, and I loved to see how the tendrils of their first love reached through to the present. I would never say no to a Rowan King on my doorstep.

I also loved Tessa. She was scrappy but wicked smart and full of self-preservation. I think she was just a victim of trauma and circumstance and didn't know how to deal with it. I loved her wit and snark. I really loved how she defended Rowan. She could definitely hold her own. And I loved her bleeding heart even when it got her in trouble. It seemed to me that she had a hard time believing in good things when they were happening to her. And her self-sacrificing was honorable, if misguided.

I especially loved Rowan and Tessa together. They were a match for smarts, and I loved their banter. The trivia scene was really great! I loved when they were being sparky with each other but managed to work well together in the team building exercises. I loved that Tessa brought out a softness in Rowan while Rowan challenged Tessa to be the best she could be. They were definitely a perfect match and the perfect power couple.

The plot and storyline was super well done. The story was funny and yet also had a seriousness about it. There was a lot on the line for Rowan, and he did not like to lose control. The tension and slow burn was absolutely exquisite. It was very romantic while not losing the knife's-edge of Rowan and Tessa's history. And I looooved Rowan's possessiveness. No one could insult Tessa without losing a limb…or career.

Plus Waffles was a fun touch. I love how even Rowan kind of fell in love with him.

I just really loved this book! Kristy has a way of giving humor with an undercurrent of trauma that makes it believable and relatable. It builds you up and tears you down emotionally in one fell swoop. Rowan certainly made Tessa earn her place at his side, but the love he had for her was genuine. I just really loved this book and can't wait to see what happens next in this series! 5/5 🌟.

No Objection From Me

Objection Overruled is book 1 in Kristy Marie’s new IOU Kings series. It tells the story of Rowan King and Tessa Whitmore. It’s a new adult, college, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, one bed romance.

Rowan King
Law Student
Holds the Cards (literally)
Likes to Be in Control

Tessa Whitmore
Law Student
Trying to Stay Under the Radar
Has a Tendency to Spiral

At the start of the story, we learn that Tessa left Rowan without a word a few years ago when they were involved, but we don’t learn why until close to the end of the story. Since that time, Rowan has become the IOU King on campus, which is a system he inherited based on collecting debts for favors given. He’s learned how to work the debts owed to him in ways few can imagine.

Tessa finds herself in a compromising position that Rowan takes advantage of and spins in his favor. He needs a fake girlfriend to take to a retreat for the law firm he is interested in becoming a part of in the future. Rowan hasn’t forgotten Tessa’s leaving and he’s a bit unlikeable at the start. As the story progresses, we see that his words and actions don’t necessarily match up in regard to his feelings for Tessa. In all his planning, he forgot that Tessa is, and always was, a wild card.

I enjoyed how the story developed from start to finish. Rowan went from cold and calculating to something else once he spent time in close proximity to Tessa. I loved how she would banter with him in a disrespectful, yet flirty way. I just knew Rowan wanted to smile or laugh out loud at some of the things she did, but he refused to let her know she was getting to him. I think what struck me the most was the respect Rowan had for her, even though he wasn’t saying it aloud. Tessa stayed true to herself, even with what she went through.

There were times where I felt a bit lost in the story, because I didn’t know all the information to figure out what exactly was going on between Tessa and Rowan. Were they still attracted to the other or not? Was he really out for revenge for the way she left him or not? Why did she leave him? By the end of the book, all my questions about their former relationship were answered. There were a couple of things I would have liked to know more about… Rowan’s relationship with his father and the whereabouts of Tessa’s mom.

Although Objection Overruled is part of a new series, if you are interested in knowing more about the IOU system you can check out the 21 Rumors series. The IOU system was first introduced in Kristy Marie’s book, IOU. It was expanded upon in the book You Owe Me. Both books are part of her 21 Rumors series and follow the same couple, Maverick and Ainsley. The third book in the series, The Closer, features Maverick’s brother, Cooper.

I’m a big fan of Kristy Marie and her stories. She hooked me in with her Commander in Briefs series in 2020 and I’ve enjoyed all the journeys she’s taken me on with her books. I love how she isn’t afraid to venture into new territory with her books. If you haven’t read her yet, I highly recommend that you do so.

Oh how I do love Kristy and the way she gives me all the sass and snark I could ever need in a book.

Tessa unfortunately is found in quite the compromising position by the last person she'd want to find her and quiet frankly would rather curl up and die than owe him. Much to her displeasure, that is exactly where she finds herself and boy does it add a little colour back into her life. Tessa is relatable in her insecurities. She's compassionate to the point it hurts her. She's sweet and loving and perfectly imperfect. I love that she risked it all for a little dog. I love that she fights tooth and nail for what she believes. I also enjoyed the heck out of how feisty she is with Rowan.

Rowan is locked up tight with a chip on his shoulder and a point to prove. Or so he believes. He's a lot of hurt, stubborn and protective. He takes what he wants. He works hard and plays harder. Everything about this man shows cool calm and collected externally but inside?.. Wrecking ball. When Tessa's about she brings him to life and frustrated him to no end but Rowan a little wrecked is all kinds of delectable. He's fiercely protective, even at his own expense. He loves hard and he's all in and when he takes what's his? when he opens up?.. man it's painful and beautiful all at once.

These two are messy chaos and passion. They bicker and push each others buttons but there is no one who'll protect them like they protect each other. The passion, the vulnerability.. Everything about them had me invested. Their journey wasn't easy both of them had things they had to figure out alone and together and navigating that with water under the bridge was a hard thing. It was a journey to say the least but it was worth it and that epilogue?.. perfection.

Kristy has her own stamp on her stories that clearly define them as hers and this is no different. Objection overruled is a character driven story about two people on their second chance journey. Both imperfect and both relatable is their own ways. I was invested in their story and where it would take me and I wasn't disappointed in the emotional rollercoaster that is was. I laughed and I ranted. I swooned and I was frustrated and in the end I was so happy at where the got to from where they came from. Two people so meant for each other that anything else was not an option. Even if it hurt a little before it healed and got better.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I’ve been reading Kristy Marie for years. I’ve been locked into whatever this woman writes.

So when she announced we were returning to the IOU world, I was immediately all in.

I think the biggest challenge Objection Overruled faces has nothing to do with the writing, the plot, or even Rowan and Tessa. The challenge is that Rowan is stepping into a world many of us still associate with Maverick.

And let’s be honest: nobody is Maverick.

That’s not a criticism of Rowan. It’s just the reality of being the guy who inherits the empire after a character so many readers loved. Rowan was never going to win that comparison, and honestly, it’s unfair to expect him to.

Once I stopped comparing him to Maverick and accepted him for who he was, I enjoyed him so much more. He’s stubborn, controlling, frustrating, and completely committed to the lie that Tessa doesn’t affect him anymore. Meanwhile, every decision he makes revolves around her. Sir, please be serious.

What I appreciated most was Tessa’s story. She didn’t leave because she stopped loving Rowan. She left because she was struggling and believed she had to face that darkness alone. Sometimes people push away the people they love most because they don’t want them carrying the weight of their pain. I thought that was one of the most relatable parts of the book and something that deserves more understanding than criticism.

Is this my favorite Kristy Marie book? No.

Did I cry? Also no, but I’m a mood reader and whether a book destroys me emotionally often depends on where I’m at in life when I read it.

What I did do was enjoy spending time back in a world I’ve loved for years. Kristy has a way of creating characters that feel real, flawed, frustrating, and impossible not to root for. Even when a book isn’t my personal favorite, it still feels like coming home.

I know Kristy has faced personal struggles, and while that doesn’t automatically excuse flaws or make a book immune from criticism, it does make me appreciate the fact that she continues to create stories that readers connect with. I couldn’t write magic if you paid me. She does it for a living.

Rowan and Tessa won’t replace Maverick in my heart. The truth is, they were never supposed to.

They were supposed to be Rowan and Tessa.

And by the end, that was enough.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Objection Overruled by Kristy Marie completely stole my heart. From the very first chapter, I was hooked on Tessa and Rowan's story and could not put it down.

There is something so irresistible about a second chance romance where two people are carrying years of hurt, regret, and unresolved feelings, and Kristy Marie delivered that perfectly. The tension between Tessa and Rowan practically jumps off the page. Every conversation, every look, and every forced moment together had me completely invested in their journey.

Rowan King is the kind of book boyfriend who lives rent free in your head long after you finish the story. Beneath his revenge fueled plans and carefully controlled exterior is a man who never truly forgot the woman who broke his heart. Watching his walls slowly crack whenever Tessa was around was everything I wanted and more.

Tessa was equally easy to root for. She made mistakes, she carried guilt, and she had to face the consequences of choices she made years ago. Her growth throughout the story felt authentic, and I loved seeing her fight for both her future and the man she never really stopped loving.

The fake dating setup was absolute perfection. Add in one dog, one bed, forced proximity, and enough chemistry to set the pages on fire, and I was completely obsessed. The banter was sharp, the emotional moments hit hard, and the romance had me smiling one minute and tearing up the next.

What I loved most was that beneath all the humor, tension, and swoony moments was a story about forgiveness, healing, and finding your way back to the person who has always felt like home.

If you love enemies to lovers, fake dating, second chance romance, forced proximity, and a hero who is equal parts frustrating and irresistible, Objection Overruled is a must read. Kristy Marie delivered a story full of heart, emotion, and unforgettable chemistry, and I loved every single page.

This is Kristy Marie’s new fake-dating, one-bed, second-chance romance.
If you’ve read IOU, you’ll already have a bit of background info on this book. If not, don’t worry—it works perfectly fine as a standalone romance.

I love her books.
I’m obsessed with her rom-coms, which always tackle important topics you wouldn't necessarily expect from the genre.
She writes, I read—it’s that simple.
Although, perhaps I shouldn't have started reading this book yesterday after work.
I should have known better.
Of course, I read it all in one go 🤦🏻‍♀️
Good thing I don't have to work today 😂

This book is such a beautiful, passionate, deeply moving, and emotional love story.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book where I alternated between laughing and crying every couple of pages.

I love everything about this story.
I love the writing style.
I love the hilarious, infectious humor.
The banter-filled, hilarious discussions between the characters are incredibly entertaining.
I laughed until I cried.
And then I cried because, two pages later, the story shifted from "hahaha funny" to "OMG heartbreakingly emotional," where the characters are so damn traumatized that they can't believe happiness is possible for them.

I’m a wreck—a happy wreck, though one that hasn't slept enough.
This story touched me deeply and left a lasting impression.
The book reminded me all over again why I love her books so much.
The emotional depth, the nuances balancing happiness and security against the past and trauma.
Can you learn to be happy?
Or are we so shaped by our past that we no longer have a fair shot at it?
This book touches on so many themes at once.
It raises a lot of important questions, too.

I loved every second of this book.
Read it, you’ll love it.
It’s a must-read for all romance fans.

Objection Overruled by Kristy Marie is Book #1 in the IOU Kings series — a contemporary romance with a legal world backdrop, second-chance romance, and all the emotional tension you expect from a story about two people who once loved each other and now have to face everything they tried to leave behind.

⭐ 5

What I loved most was the emotional history between the characters. This isn’t just an enemies-to-lovers story — it’s two people who already know each other’s hearts, their weaknesses, and their scars. That made every argument, every moment of tension, and every stolen glance feel so much more intense.

The chemistry between the main characters was one of my favorite parts. Their banter had that perfect “I’m angry because I still care” energy, and watching them fight their feelings while being forced back into each other’s lives was honestly addictive. The fake relationship setup added even more delicious tension because they weren’t pretending to have feelings… they were pretending they didn’t still have them.

I really enjoyed the emotional layers of the story — the hurt, the misunderstandings, the pride, and the slow realization that sometimes love doesn’t disappear just because people get hurt. The legal setting gave the story a sharp edge, but the heart of the book was always the relationship and whether two people could forgive the past and choose each other again.

Tropes:
Lawyer/Legal Romance
Second Chance Romance
Exes to Lovers
Enemies With History
Fake Relationship
Morally Grey Hero
Forced Proximity & Banter

Kristy Marie delivered a romance filled with tension, emotion, and characters who make you want to scream at them one minute and root for them the next. If you love couples with unfinished business and a lot of feelings hiding behind sharp words, this one deserves a spot on your TBR. ✨

5 Back in the World I Love Stars!!

I didn’t realize how much I missed being in an IOU world until I started reading Rowan and Tessa’s book. The opening of this book was so perfect. I chuckled out loud and just knew that I was going to fly through this book. I literally read it in one sitting. This story is filled with some of the best witty banter, a simmering chemistry, emotional healing and vulnerability that neither of them planned on revealing. When you add in a Waffles, well this book is EVERYTHING!

Rowan is the King of Havemeyer Law and when Tessa finds herself in a situation, her only recourse is to take one of the dreaded “red cards.” I just didn’t know what was to come and let me tell you, when these two are together, they’re unstoppable.

Rowan brings, and I use that word lightly, Tessa to a long weekend interview with one of the most prestigious law firms in the country as his plus one. I loved how she basically swept everyone into being in awe of her. She’s on fire with not only the team building events but the required social gatherings. Rowan just stands back and becomes in awe of her, until a particular moment that changes the tone of not only the weekend, but their relationship as well.

Rowan is so powerful and when Tessa is put in a position that neither of them expected, he uses all his power to make things right. I actually did a fist pump in my living room! I also cackled with glee as all sorts façades came tumbling down. Through all of this, there are moments between Tessa and Rowan and Waffles that hurt my heart, had me swooning and ultimately emotionally healed both of them which neither of them were expecting.

Overall, Ms. Marie delivered a book that entertained me from beginning to end and made me want to reread the earlier books connected to the IOU world.

Seriously good read! Fast-paced, excellent repartee and snappy dialogue, great storyline. Loved it!

"He's not here because I broke the law. He's here because I broke him. And now, he's going to collect."

Tessa Whitmore is at Havemeyer Law by the skin of her teeth. An misdemeanour from her past means that she's pretty much on her last chance to realise her dreams. However, when her soft heart cannot stand an impending injustice, her actions cost her - she ends up carrying an IOU from the last person she ever wanted to cross paths with - her ex, Rowan King.

"She's the detour I never recovered from. The girl who blew up her own future, and mine, with one well-timed disappearance."

Rowan has Tessa exactly where he wants her. He can have his revenge, as well as make use of her to secure his future. However, she's always gotten under his skin, and the more time they spend together, the more he realises that he doesn't want to make her pay, he just wants her....

I was sucked into this story right from the start. Tessa is an impulsive but righteous bleeding heart. She's resilient, sassy and brilliant-minded, yet she has her personal demons to deal with. Rowan is guarded, controlled and in command of a wide network of secrets and favours. She loosened him up and he gave her a safe place to land. I loved them together. They had tension and chemistry in spades. Their quick-fire dialogue was delightful and funny. They were so droll when they got going - almost like no one else existed when they were focused on one another.

This was a fabulous, addictive read! Thoroughly recommend!

✨Objection Overruled✨
IOU Kings #1

By Kristy Marie

✨ Second Chance
✨ Enemies to Lovers
✨ Contemporary Romance

⭐ 5/5

Tessa didn’t want to be a burden
Rowan does everything to protect her

Rowan, Tessa and hilarious banter

Banters and arguments are their love language.
This romance that follows Rowan and Tessa is entertaining with a swoonworthy hero and fabulous in a romantic, extraordinary way.
Rowan is still hurt by Tessa’s leaving years ago but deep inside he still cares about her.
Tessa didn’t leave because she was out of love, on the contrary.
But now their new together is based on IOU’s and leverage. And pretending. Lots of.
Tessa has trouble asking for help, showing weakness or feeling like someone or somewhere could be home for her.
Rowan never cared about appearance, backgrounds or things like that. He only cared about Tessa herself.
Two stubborn and (almost) uncompromising characters manage to find their way to each other again through secrets, weekend retreats and a dog who becomes the piece that binds them in the end.
A man that shows his girl that he chooses her more than a job, and a girl that runs to give him the future she thinks he wants.
A wonderful story, a heartwarming romance and entertaining, sassy and quick-witted characters. A beautiful read we all anticipated and man did we not get disappointed.

IOU Kings book 1
•Rowan & Tessa

*I was provided an ARC of this book by the author and their promotion team

What a joy it was being back in Havemeyer and being back in the IOU world! Rowan and Tessa had be in a chokehold from page, and I devoured their second chance story in one sitting!!

Rowan King's story has been one of my most highly anticipated reads since Kristy announced he was getting a book! However, I was not prepared for how much I'd love this elusive, stoic man. Even through this no-BS behavior, it's obvious from their first interaction in the book, that he is a man down BAD for Tessa! The push and pull tension between these two was INSANE and had be on the edge of my couch cheering for them through the whole story!

I really admired Tessa as an FMC because although we don't learn her full story until later in the book, it's cleared she's worked hard to earn all her accomplishments, both academically and emotionally. She is resilient and so headstrong, which makes her such an admirable FMC! The banter between these two was so much fun and I loved see them go toe to toe with each other in every chapter! Overall, this was an incredibly enjoyable, angsty read that will also make you laugh and swoon!

Although this is book 1 in a brand new series, I highly recommend reading Kristy's 21 Rumors series to really understand and immerse yourself in the IOU world!

I absolutely adored Objection Overruled! It had all of my favorite makings of a great Kristy Marie book - charming characters, witty banter, and swoon worthy romance!

Rowan King and Tessa Whitmore have a complicated past; now made even more complicated, after Rowan finds Tessa in a compromising position. Rowan issues Tessa an infamous IOU card. The last thing Tessa wants is to be in debt to Rowan, but she finds herself suddenly owing Rowan two IOU’s. After breaking up with Rowan in undergrad, Tessa is definitely worried about what Rowan will come asking for. To her surprise, he needs a fake date to take on a retreat. This retreat means a lot to Rowan as it could make or break his future, and he knows exactly what he’s doing when he asks Tessa to join him.

I don’t want to give away too much more, because reading this is an experience! I loved how much push and pull Tessa and Rowan had! And Waffles, the one eyed mutt, provided a ton of comic relief! Tessa is independent, intellegent, and witty. Her charm is matched perfectly with Rowan’s dry wit! Rowan, Tessa, and Waffles are some of Kristy Marie’s best characters!

If you love second chance romance, slow burn, fake dating, and ONE BED!!! - don’t miss out on Objection Overruled!

ABSOLUTELY LOVED GOING BACK INTO THE IOU WORLD AGAIN WITH ROWAN & TESSA!!

Okay I'm a total sucker for these characters and the IOU world in general but Rowan & Tessa brought their own unique fun this time around and I was so herefkr it!!

If you love quirky characters then Tessa is your girl here. She is hilarious and gives the stoic Rowan a few headaches along their journey to finding a HEA. I was so excited to get more on Rowan and man he didn't disappoint at all. He was the perfect man to step into Maverick's shoes as the king of IOU's. He's broody and cunning but Tessa brings out a side we never knew he had. These two are highly competitive and don't back down from any situation they find themselves in which leads to some fun moments and even a few heartfelt ones as well.

Kristy Marie brought back the best parts of this world again with the IOU blackmailing, bantering that is perfection, characters you are completely invested in, a found family vibe, a little spice, and an ending that makes you still want more of this world.

If you are a fan of IOU and characters from that book then you absolutely want this one as well. Its a fun read that let's you escape life for a little while. I absolutely recommend this one if you need some laughs and HEA that keeps you smiling. Its just a fun read overall so it's a definite must read!!

Overall: 5/☆☆☆☆☆
Spice: 🌶🌶

Am currently reading this through an early release through BookFunnel. Love love love Kristy’s books and this is no exception. I starting reading her books with IOU and haven’t regretted it. Her follow up book of you owe me was fabulous and I enjoyed every minute of it. The last few chapters were an aha moment for me and never let it be said that the power of mavericks IOU’s are powerful. You will meet Rowan and Tessa in objection overruled. Not far into the book but Tessa was caught by Rowan trying to break in and sneak a dog out from the animal shelter where she currently works at from getting put down. The IOU ensues there after. Of course it doesn’t help when she knew Rowan before and their history together is not good one. My journey will continue as I read further so stay tuned.
Well I have finished the book and it did disappoint. Rowan collects on his IOU with her accompanying him to a law office staff retreat where they select candidates for their firm. There the banter begins and the old familiar feelings come in reluctantly but they do. Kristy I don’t know how you do it but honestly I would have thought you were a lawyer the way the book reads. In fact every book you write I swear you have that background. From the Potters to the commander books and even the race car book you are amazing. Loved the story and love you for writing suck terrific stories.

Rowan King is the king of book boyfriends. The calculative manipulative heartless ruthless game maker with his own kingdom of IOU is a complete goner for his woman. But since he has to be the hard headed stubborn hero who cannot do it simple way, he has to bind Tessa through his IOU until his truth comes out. Now Tessa is equally sassy and fierce ,though her bleeding heart can make you feel otherwise sometimes. She will be in a mess but she will still be the most amazing woman ever. The Hampton weekend disguised as the networking test turned out be their undoing.

🖤 fake dating
🖤 enemies to lovers
🖤 morally grey hero
🖤 college romance
🖤 sassy heroine
🖤 second chance romance

Kristy Marie's writing is especially sharp and witty in Objection Overruled. She expertly takes the story from Rowan pulling his IOU on Tessa for hiding her dog rescue mission to a high end dangerous weekend that is suppsoed to solidify Rowan's career. Tessa and Rowan have unsolved issues and an ocean of hurt between them. They still love each other but like any great love story, they don't accept it until they drag your heart through heartache and angst and pure pain.

Unraveling of Rowan King was the most powerful thing. He is untouchable and feared and wanted. He doesn't do nice or sweet or pleasant. He is all hard and edgy but Tessa exposes his soft side. She can hold her own but Rowan wants to fight her battles. Every fake scathing insult, every nonchalant moment, every slow burning chemisty fuelled touch..this book is a textbook of yearning. The perfect example of how "i hate you but i actually use this to hide my love". They needed each other and nothing else. I am in complete unhinged love with Rowan and Tessa.

Rowan King is now in control of the IOU empire that was originally run by Maverick (in the book You Owe Me). He had been in love with Tessa a few years earlier, when she just left him without any explanation. So when he arranges for her to be accepted at his current law school (via the IOU empire) she figures it’s best if she avoids him if she can. That works until he catches her rescuing a dog illegally. That gives Rowan leverage over Tessa, and it means she owes him some IOU’s. She pays up by attending a prestigious law firm’s partner’s retreat in the Hamptons with him for the top law school students in his graduating class.

Things get interesting at the retreat, and truths come out that need to be aired regarding both Rowan and Tessa. The ending is especially well done, while the entire story is a great example of what snappy, intelligent dialogue should always be like in books. This book was a treat to read! Both protagonists have to break down some walls and be vulnerable, but that’s part of what makes this book so special.

This was a former lovers to enemies to ...lovers story.
Rowan was a man that held himself tight, always trying to be in control. He lost some of that control from the only person that could make him lose it, when Tessa left him 3 years ago. Is is his chance to gain some of it back, when he "bails" her out of trouble.
Tessa is a hard character to peg. It felt like there were three main characters instead of two. Before and after the retreat, she was a woman who was not totally sure of herself. During the retreat, she was confident and charismatic.
This was a really slow burn story. I really didn't feel the love between them, although it was spoken about. Rowan was better at expressing his feelings for Tessa than she was. The dog was cute, but didn't always work in the story. Sometimes, he was totally forgotten.
There times I felt left out. What went down after the retreat regarding the firm, how did Rowan's actions help Rowan and Tessa, what happened to their mothers, the people who had a significant impact on them?

Rowan and Tessa

After the first meeting with the characters, I wasn’t quite sure how it was going to play out. I expected that as they started as enemies of a sort, and him being an absolute azz, that I wouldn’t like Rowan at all.

Morally grey lawyers/law students, blackmail, favours owed and a lot of behind the scenes manipulation.
Tessa is a bit of a bleeding heart, and I was curious as to what caused their separation. She admitted that she left him, and he held onto that hatred, but once her reason was revealed, it was pretty devastating.

Once the story got past halfway, I started to see the other side of Rowan, and I adored how protective he was, and his mic drop moments were absolutely superb. Like, pretty much light a match and walk away energy.

It started as enemies, ended as lovers, and the epilogue was adorable (and a little funny).
I’m looking forward to the next in the series…

Thanks, Kristy Marie, for the advance copy.

Wow! I absolutely devoured this book. This is one of those books that lingers long after the last words are read. It's full of heat, emotional depth and is so realistic it hurts at times.

Rowan and Tessa's story is intense and highly emotionally charged. After three years apart Rowan finally gets his chance to get Tessa in his grasp again and doesn't hesitate to use the IOU system to keep her there. I really enjoyed all the witty banter and jabs these two dole out until the moment every thing changes and they are so open and raw with each other. Their time apart wasn't about a lack of love but so much more that makes their second chance so much more endearing. I love how even though Rowan is cold and calculated he softens just for Tessa and will burn everything down for her. Definitely a 5 star must read.

I was sent an advanced copy and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

3,5⭐️ This ARC was gifted to me by the author: all opinions are my own

💕 Second chance
👩🏻‍💼 Lawyers
🛏️ One Bed
😣 Revenge and leverage

I'm gonna be honest and say that I had trouble getting into it for the first 30%... But I don't regret continuing 💕

The book starts with such a ridiculous situation that you immediately love Tessa. She's smart, strong, opinionated and a mess.
I had a bit of trouble with Rowan. He's supposed to be calculating but comes off so bitter. Once the story advanced, it felt more like hurt and I got attached to him. This man may be calculating and cold but he learned how to show Tessa that she mattered. Even when she didn't want to see it.

The plot grasped me well and I loved the situation Tessa put herself into. A comic really 😂

➡️ I will for sure read the next book in the series. I recommand it to romcom and second change romance lovers.

Objection Overruled had me back in IOU world, one that I have previously loved. This story is all about second chances, fake dating and one of my favourites, forced proximity. Rowan uses an IOU debt to have Tessa pulled into a fake dating arrangement and with the forced proximity, it brings unresolved issues from their previous relationship to a head. The banter and the chemistry between these two holds your attention. As these two clash and it brings things to the surface it has the second chance they both deserve right there for the taking. The author always has a way of pulling you in and having you fall in love with the characters and the storyline. There is always plenty of drama, passion, angst and emotions that you will be on the edge of your seat and holding on right to the very end.

Thank you for the ARC!

I’ve only read a little bit of Kristy Marie’s but the Potter series is a favorite of mine so I was really excited to read her new books.

From the beginning this didn’t disappoint. The opening scene does so much in a short period of time. Not just for Tessa’s character, but from Rowan’s, their connection. Just chef’s kiss.

Rowan as a character alone was chefs kiss. The calm , cool, charisma, untouchable on campus? I’m digging it.

Tessa’s internal struggles dealing with the elitist world was so heartwrencingly honest.

I adored Rowan and Tessa’s journey. Rowan is a perfect example of the type of MMCs I love even when they’re cold and ruthless. They can still be a top tier MMC and Kristy Marie knows how to write them!

I loved Rowan and Tessa. These two have a past and there is no denying the feelings are still there between them. When an opportunity arises to get revenge on Tessa he jumps at it. She’s caught red handed doing something a little illegal for a good cause and now she’s in his debt and we all know what the IOU is for, when he calls she answers and does what she is asked to do and that terrifies her. Tessa has a big heart, she’s witty, holds her own with Rowan and he’s mysterious, calculating a little dark side, but Tessa knows deep down her Rowan is still in there somewhere. I so loved Waffles he stole the show just a little. Who doesn’t love a good enemies to lovers story with a great ending to the chaos. Amazing read, highly recommend it.

This story was captivating, entertaining and full of IOUs. I love this story. Tessa is back in college but keeping her head down. She is smart, pretty and sweet. Tessa gets caught in the act doing something she's not supposed to do but she cannot help. Now she is put in a position that she cannot get herself out of. Rowan is the king of the campus. He is smart, handsome and cold hearted. Rowan is the person you ho to if you need a certain type of favor. He set his sights on Tessa. I love how Tessa and Rowan banter each other with an undertone of flirting. The writing was amazing and flows throughout the book flawlessly. Kristy girl you outdone yourself with this first book of IOU series! Can't wait for the next book!🥳❤️

Tessa and Rowen kick off Kristy Marie's new IOU series with a fantastic story! I was looking forward to jumping back in to this world and finding out what came next

I knew from the very first chapter I was going to love Tessa. She's smart, kind, and has a good heart. Rowen is her ex and also the guy on campus no one wants to owe anything.

When he finds her and gives her his IOU card I couldn't wait to see what came next. Their banter was great and I was curious how they would find their way back to one another when his goal was to use the IOU and hold the info he had on her over her head.

The story moved at a good pace and I didn't want to put it down. This is a great addition to the IOU series/world.

Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for an honest review.

Objection Overruled starts to IOU Kings Series with Tessa and Rowan's story. This is a second chance, 'fake' relationship, forced-proximity, touch her-and-suffer romance :) Years ago, Tessa left Rowan without any explanations. Cold and calculating, Rowan is back to avenge and she is his target. He blackmails her into being his date for his late father's law firm's retreat. The retreat proves to be an eye-opening experience for them in more ways than intended and reaffirm why they are meant for each other, especially when they unite to fight the law firm snakes. I love their banter and chemistry. I have loved reading Kristy Marie's work throughout the years and was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy of this. Can't wait for more IOU couples!

With an enemies to lovers, second chance, both lawyers… this is an exiting story, full of banter, secrets and tensions… all tinted with an extremely powerful chemistry.

Reading books with the lawyer trope is always fun, I mean if someone knows how to debate it’s them… and let me tell you this two keep things interesting, we as readers are reduced to spectators watching the ball get punched from one side to another!

Of course, being a second chance they have they have a past and being honest I would have appreciated if we get to see more of that, and more of that context that built their relationship.

This was an ARC read . It came to me from the author.
This is my second book by this author, (thank you!) and i thoroughly enjoyed it.
I started out thinking it had "pretty woman" vibes, except our two MC's had previously been a couple, they were great together, even whilst denying they still had chemistry.
This is a lighthearted story, with laugh out loud moments. . . .like Tessa's knees forgetting how to knee, and the canoe scene. And that dog!!! Hahaha.
A great couple, and a wonderfully amusing story.
I do think i need to read IOU so I get the full understanding of the background.
