Katie’s return to Vancouver was supposed to involve reuniting with her witch girlfriend Natalie and settling back into university life. Instead, she’s ambushed by Natalie’s furious coven, who hold her accountable for releasing feral magic and exposing their secrets.

If Katie wants any hope of being accepted by Natalie’s coven, she must somehow recapture all the shapeshifting magic she unleashed. Worse, the notorious Madsen family is hunting the same power, and if they claim it, Katie could lose everything—including Natalie.

With her and Natalie’s future at stake, Katie must learn more about her mysterious ability to sense magic and embrace her true nature, all while trying to prove herself to a coven that sees her as an outsider.

In this thrilling sequel to How to Flirt with a Witch, Katie and Natalie must confront dark magic, deadly enemies, and the centuries-old laws that stand in the way of their love.

hm. okay i did enjoy this one overall, but i still think that it feels very ya in tone, characters, and writing style. i think it is marketed as adult? it should land in new adult, because there are a few (very mild, tbh) sex scenes. i think the characters just felt a bit young to me and the writing style added to that. i do like katie and natalie, and enjoyed more of hazel (though i've got an issue with how, but we'll get there) and i like the magical worldbuilding and i just do always love stories about witches.

that said, idk, i had a few issues with it that i found the hazel/oaklyn addition really rushed. i like hazel, and i would have been perfectly happy to have her pov here, but the fact that it's supposedly her journal entries kept taking me out of the story. they start a little as though they actually are, but then quickly just shift to being her pov with dialogue and scenarios where she likely wouldn't be writing in her diary but reacting to what is happening, ESPECIALLY at the end during the big fight. i just wish it had said her pov and left the journal thing out of it. i also personally am not usually a fan of instalove and BOY does hazel decide she is in love with oaklyn real fast.

overall, i do enjoy this world, i think it just feels a little too juvenille for my personal tastes at this point in my life, but i still think it's fun and will probably check out the next installment.

How to Charm a Coven is a fast-paced, action-packed adventure that picks up a little over two months after How to Flirt with a Witch and never slows down until the very last page. With its thrilling action scenes, richly imagined world, and well-developed characters, it’s an absolutely captivating read. Katie’s perspective is complemented by Hazel’s journal entries, which offer fascinating glimpses into her best friend’s world and add real depth to the story. The romance between Katie and Natalie is tender and heartfelt, though not without its share of well-placed obstacles. Altogether, this is one of those books that’s nearly impossible to put down.

I could easily read ten more books about Katie and Natalie's magical adventures!
This second installment is just as captivating as the first, with a strong focus on Katie’s personal growth and the unfolding of her unique abilities.
The blend of romance and action continues to work beautifully, and the themes of found family, self-discovery, and the impossible tension between humanity and nature, love and reason, spirituality and materialism, are all woven together in a way that truly draws the reader in.
Hazel’s subplot adds an extra layer of tension and drama, while also setting the stage for future developments that promise to be incredibly compelling.
I can’t wait to read more from Tiana Warner! :)

How to Charm a Coven was a exhilarating sequel to How to Flirt with a Witch that had me white knuckling my tablet pillow and saying “no no no no no” more times that I could count. Unlike the first book which covered several months of time, this book takes place over less than two weeks. After some time has settled following Katie’s release of untamed magic, she is ready to be back in Vancouver with Natalie. But the second Katie lands, before they even have a chance to kiss hello, their lives are thrown into chaos and turmoil…yet again. The coven is furious and they need someone to pay, and who better to put all the blame on than the outsider. Now, instead of preparing to start her classes, Katie’s entire focus is on doing whatever she can to keep herself out of witch jail and having every single plan for her life derailed - which includes telling a certain witch how she feels and planning a future with her.

Re-capturing wild magic is hard enough, especially when you aren’t a witch. Doing something in mere months that took trained witches a century to do might as well be a fool’s dream. Add to that the fact that your best friend is now involved in this world in the worst possible way, and that you are suddenly hearing voices inside your head that no one else can hear and feel like you are losing your mind but also can’t help but feel that these magical creatures seem to be speaking to you… That already difficult task becomes impossible, hopeless, and utterly futile. But when your future and your freedom depend on it - what other choice do you have?

Katie has definitely had some growth as a character and continues to grow throughout the book. She understands more about what’s at stake and that there are layers to this world she’s only scratched the surface of. She spent so much of the last book trying to prove herself, to feel worthy, to belong. In book two she gains confidence in herself and in her ability and begins to realize there are other options, terrifying as they may be. It was beautiful watching her grow and find herself and claim her space.

And Hazel…oh Hazel. I loved that we got a little of her perspective in book two but dang girl! The immaturity and naivety that Katie mostly shed after book one must have landed on Hazel. She was on her own journey in coming to terms with her sexuality, and had a lot going on, but she made a lot of very questionable choices that had me practically screaming at her while reading. I’ll let you find out what she did for yourself though. Let’s just say Katie and her bestie are going to have a lot to work through after everything that went down.

I was already in awe of the magic system/world building Tiana did in book one, but she expanded it even more in this book and it was imaginative and captivating. The whole backstory of the chimeras and what they are and do, the hidden and buried history of what once was, Katie’s ability and powers that continue to evolve and grow - it was all incredibly fascinating.

And OMG - the action, the drama, the angst! Between Katie’s impending imprisonment, the coven’s insistence that all wild magic be captured and caged, the drama with Hazel, Natalie’s conflicting pull between her coven and her girlfriend, ongoing Madsen chaos, Katie’s impossible task and her newfound but not yet understood abilities - this book had me on the edge of my seat from the start. There was never a dull moment in this book and the buildup from the first chapter to the climactic ending kept me hooked.

While for the most part the story was wrapped up beautifully at the end, it was also left open enough that I’m hoping there will be more to come, or at least a spinoff into what happens next with Hazel. Here’s hoping!

I received an ARC from the author and leave this review voluntarily.

A wild ride: filled with action, witchcraft, self-discovery
Loved this twisty and action-filled story. When you think nothing can get worse (see part 1 of this witchy series) start chapter 1 of How to Charm a Coven and see how a whole coven of witches (and some supposed friends) are turning against you. Katie, the non-witch with special magical skills, is saddled with an impossible task and it takes just a hot minute to cross paths with the murderous Madsen clan again. Fortunately her girlfriend Natalie is her staunch supporter. Action galore!
At the same time Katie is increasingly asking herself the hard questions: is she doing the right thing? There is a tension between doing what the witches want to finally belong and her gut feeling. I totally loved this angle! There is self-discovery, inner turmoil, angst and coming-of-age.
Pure genius: the story of Katie‘s Bestie, Hazel who has a new job in Vancouver and is on her own course of self-discovery and coming-out. Loved to read her diary and loved the additional twisty turns Hazel‘s story adds.
The worldbuilding is outstanding and the writing is fast and furious.
Although the story arc has a satisfying conclusion, I hope that there will be a part 3. I need to know more about Hazel!!

I received an ARC. The review is left voluntarily.

After releasing all the wild magic, Katie left Vancouver for a few months. But the new school year is approaching and Katie has to return. She can't wait to see Natalie and begin her new life at CSAMM. Except the coven hasn't forgiven her, they ambush and arrest her. After a trial Katie is given 30 days to recapture all the magic, or face 5 years imprisoned. With no choice Katie and Natalie head out on their mission. They also know the Madsens are chasing the magic as well, so the race is on.

First off about this book is I loved the addition of Hazel’s journal entries as another POV. While I enjoy another POV I found Hazel a bit naive. Yea she was discovering more of herself and finding out about magic, but after what happened to her in book one I feel like she should have been way more cautious. I do think that Hazel is definitely gonna make the next book way more interesting. As for Katie and Natalie, I adore their relationship. Despite Katie seemingly trying to push Natalie away, Natalie fights so hard for her girl. They are so cute and I can't wait to see how the relationship evolves in the next book. Also I loved the addition of Katie finding out about her magical roots. Also cannot wait to see that explored more.

Not nearly enough hot sister Sky, but I still had a fun time with this one.

I think I enjoyed the first book more overall, but I really liked this as a continuation of the story. Just like How to Flirt With a Witch, this book was fast paced and funny but still had enough tense and emotional moments to keep you hooked. It was great closure to learn more about Katie's abilities and the bio magic she set free at the end of the last book.

I especially enjoyed how Katie and Natalie's relationship further developed in the story and I really appreciated that I think this book did a great job of tying a neat little bow on their love story.

I liked having the journal entries from Hazel, it was fun having her perspective on things, but she did start to wear on me throughout the book. Despite that though, I still think her character has a lot of potential, and I think the end of the book is open enough that the setting could be revisited with Hazel in focus this time (but please, I am begging on my knees for more Sky this time)

So far it is a struggle to get through this book. There are journal entries from the Best friend of the main character and obviously they are being used as "fillers" for the story, in an attempt to make the book longer. There have been scenes where the MC has very seriously been injured in some way, like pulling shards of glass out of her sides and then it's never mentioned again. Not even her partner mentions it at all. It's like ideas have been thrown in here and written down into the story but then they get forgotten about and that creates untied ends to ideas that were used.

Near the end of the last book the poor MC had bloody shrapnel embedded into her thigh to the point she was hemorrhaging and it was never mentioned again, and once again her partner didn't even take notice.

I am going to continue on with this story in hopes that it picks up at some point.

This is why it's a very good idea to hire a good editor... They catch things like loose ends and things that are littering this entire story. I fear this might just be one of those books that I am unable to finish, not because the story itself is bad, even the world building is wonderful, it's the presentation of the story. Something big is lacking. Like a scene where the MC encounters yet ANOTHER near life ending injury, which ends up being a massive trauma trigger for the MC's partner. Instead of fast traveling to days later, what happened after MC is saved??? Why end the scene? Why not show the interaction between the MC and the love interest?? That is the main point of writing Sapphic novels.

So far I am nearly have way done the book and so far there has been more interaction between the MC and the place holder character who is the best friend of the MC, this has made the whole story very dry and kind of a big let down so far.

I hope it picks up past the 50% mark because if not this story is going to be a let down and I would be generous to give it a 3 star rating.

More like a 3.5 for me but I rounded up because goodreads really needs to let us give half stars!!! Ugh! Anyway, I liked this book but didn’t love it, definitely liked and enjoyed the first one more. I really enjoyed Nat and Katie’s story and how they tackled the mess that book one ended, but I could not stand Hazel. I could have done without her point of view but I’m probably in the minority with that one, yes she provided some angst and added to the drama but damn girl, some of those choices deserved a lot more punishment. Hazel herself came across super immature to me and it was infuriating when she chose a girl she’s known for what, a week, over her best friend of years! Then her and Oaklyn I love you’d each other after a few days…come on! Insert eye roll here.
But as for Nat and Katie? Absolutely loved how solid they were, even when they didn’t see eye to eye, they still apologized and talked it out. I would absolutely read another book with them centered (even if I have to deal with Hazel)

I'm sad to say that I was a little disappointed with this book. It wasn't a bad book, but there were some things that bothered me like the miscommunication and the abundance of stupid choices made by too many characters. And the lack of Natalie. I was looking forward to getting to know her better, but that doesn't really happen. There were good parts too, of course, such as the magic system that was still interesting and the humour. But I definitely liked the first book better. The ending was pretty satisfying though, which is why I rounded up my rating.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is a fast-paced action paranormal story, with a coming-out story, self-discovery, and a bit of spice. The main couple was already established in the previous book in this series (How to Flirt with a Witch), and while this time they have some hurdles to go over, it is not the main thing.

As a former animals' activist, I related to the main hurdle and inner conflict in this book very much, and I wholeheartedly supported the MC's decisions as she found out her true vocation in life. While it felt a little triggering at the beginning, the fast pace and the excellent writing swept me over and I couldn’t put the book down. I thoroughly enjoyed it, laughing outloud at times, almost crying at other times. The other MC has to discover some hard truths, and her disillusionment broke my heart.

The whole book read like a YA novel. The MCs are supposed to be in their 20's but they act a lot like teenagers = over-dramatic reactions and emotional earthquakes that made me feel they have quite a lot of growing up to do. Granted, they do grow quite a bit during this book, but I expect much more growing-up to be done in the next book (really hoping there will be more books in this series). That means there is so much more to look forward to :) I love it!

Please note that this is a 2nd book in a series. While it can be read as a stand-alone, it is highly recommended to read the 1st book before reading this one. It will make it easier to understand the plot and characters, and will also increase your appreciation for the development of the world-building, as it develops more after what was revealed in the previous book.

What happened to the humor? Also Ethel is adorable. Lucy's distraction, although funny, felt like a distraction from an otherwise serious situation. The coven's perspective being radically shifted so quickly was not very believable.
