Although plans were disrupted and sacrifices made, the question will it be enough to save them all?

The Light of Miera continues in the second instalment of Ash Hester's gripping epic fantasy series, A Guard's Request.

Step back into the world of Alamantra as Princess Arafrey confronts the brutal realities of her position. Resolute in fulfilling the promise she made with Reyla, she dedicates herself to her people. Yet, no amount of personal sacrifice can protect them from the spreading sickness, and she finds herself seeking comfort in perilous afflictions.

Meanwhile, Reyla and Tharin, having already collected two blessings, venture into hostile territories to seek the Hand of Miera. To claim this holy relic and stop the sickness from spreading through the Manastream, they must first complete the Trial of the Ten Ancestors. But they are not the only ones seeking this power.

With the occupation of Sudra well underway, Emperor Gabris returns to Dura with new hopes of a future he believed to be lost. However, the bonds of his newfound friendships will be pushed to their limits with the rise of an unknown enemy; one who threatens to destroy everything he has accomplished.

A Guard’s Request by Ash Hester is the second installment to The Light of Miera series.

Every sentence of this book is incredible and so important to the story that Hester is weaving, and I devoured each one.

Reyla and Tharin are on a quest sent from their gods to heal the manastream that’s been poisoning the Frey and their neighbours. Their adventure is fun, sweet, and gripping. I really loved following them through the land and learning the different cultures of the peoples around them. I particularly liked the frozen scenes leading to under the mountain, and the character we meet down there: Ruby. I’m excited to see more of her!

Princess Arafrey is taking up the mantle of High Priestess after the death of her mother and struggling with the demands the position requires, and the sickness sweeping through her people. Meanwhile, the Demon Queen, Nymati, and The Great Emperor are becoming a formidable pair, much to the displeasure of Nymati’s children.

After the steep learning curve that came with A Guard’s Refrain, being in Hester’s world is an incredibly enjoyable ride. She takes you on an adventure that’s heartfelt, hopeful, and full of longing. Hester describes her stories as full of powerful women and tragic sapphic romance, with an enemies to lovers subplot, and it’s all true.

Tharin is my favourite character, and this doesn’t change right up to the end. I love the little himbo, and I would love so many more scenes with him. Please give me all Tharin, all the time, okay!?

10/10 enjoyable read, even with THAT ENDING. Which I will maybe be emotionally ready to talk about by the time the next book in this series comes out.
