The Art of Star Wars: Andor

Rate this book
The official behind-the-scenes companion to the Emmy, WGA, SAG, Golden Globe, and BAFTA–Award nominated Disney+ series

The Art of Star Andor (The Complete Series) gives readers an exclusive inside look at the production art, visual development, concept art, creature designs and FX, graphics, props, and more that went into creating the Tony Gilroy helmed Disney+ series. Through extensive interviews with Gilroy, star Diego Luna, and the talented Lucasfilm visualists, author Phil Szostak documents every step of Andor's production from discussions following the initial release of Rogue A Star Wars Story up through post-production on the final episodes of season two. With deep dives into the locations that defined the series, including Kenari, Ferrix, Aldhani, Narkina 5, Mina-Rau, Ghorman, and Yavin 4, among many others, this essential volume celebrates the legacy of all twenty-four critically acclaimed episodes and the hurdles the filmmakers, cast, and crew had to overcome to bring their vision to life.

Every facet and detail of the Rebellion and Empire's inner workings and the day-to-day existence within the world of Star Wars that Andor lovingly depicted are explored in great detail along with reflections on the series overall and its espionage roots and political relevance. The lived-in, battered costumes, ships, and locales that are so crucial to the DNA of Star Wars are on full display in this volume alongside the elegant formalism of the Galactic Senate and Coruscant. Every piece of concept art—from ISB uniforms to Ferrix workwear to sleek speeders to the sterile prison cells of Narkina 5—has a tactility that leaps off the page. Cassian Andor's journey from thief to spy to rebel to martyr, and the stories of his allies, uneasy partnerships, Imperial schemes, and galactic revolution took audiences on an emotionally resonant adventure and The Art of Star Andor spotlights the exceptional work that made it all possible.

The moment this was announced it became a must-buy for me; these art books are always fun to sift through, but they are all the more interesting as little glimpses into the production cycle, and how that cycle gets reflected to audiences. I apparently didn't do reviews for the other two art books that I own (The Last Jedi and Spider-Verse) but I recently picked up a used copy of the Force Awakens book and I'm excited to get to that down the road. I have fond memories of sitting in a Chapters and flipping through concept pages of what the next Star Wars movies *could* have been, and the forces that shifted it towards what it was.

None of these behind-the-scenes pieces ever tell the full story, but I love what we get to learn in this about how monumental a project Andor really was. Tony Gilroy has talked a lot about how the initial "5-season" plan was insurmountable, which has always seemed logical if disappointing. Reading this, however, the interviews really make clear just how much of Andor was already squeaking by through sheer luck as COVID lockdowns and SAG-AFTRA strikes gave the team more space to flesh out what the show needed to be. If the show was a sprint, how much closer would a third season have brought the crew to tripping over their feet? Given the dire state of Star Wars currently, I'm more than grateful Andor came out as perfect as it is, and I love to have such a testament to the amazing production design behind it. I will always want a little bit more out of these sorts of features (more character design concepts! More exploratory stuff!) but what's presented is a pretty spectacular history of this show's production.

Out of all these "Art of Star Wars" books, this one also acts essentially as a making of for the entire series with some very real insight in the use of production design in storytelling and the overall production of easily one of the best science fantasy (and I argue as well quasi-historical fiction) works of the last few decades. Just fantastic stuff.

Andor is the first Star Wars series in which I have understood what the hell was going on with the entire set of movies and series since the original Star Wars movie I drove from Laramie, Wyoming to Denver to see in 1977.

The two seasons of Andor on Disney+ tied everything together for me in a beautiful and satisfying way -- and this book is the perfect companion that displays reams of designs, documented thought processes, conceptual art, galaxy history, etc. that went into the creation of these worlds, cultures, and characters.

This book compiles the fascinating facts, thought processes, and design decisions that made the Andor series the best Star Wars property I've seen since "a long time ago and in a galaxy far, far away".

I love all of the Art of Star Wars books, but this is the best. While showcasing the wonderful concept art and design work, the text also provides excellent insights into the brainstorming and production of the best Star Wars media since the Original Trilogy. Tony Gilroy, Luke Hull and the others were exceptionally candid describing the challenges and breakthroughs in making this fantastic show. If you love Andor, buy and treasure this book

A fantastic book about one of the best looking, best produced Star Wars shows ever. Great behind-the-scenes look at the love that went into this series.
