Alright. This book started as something whimsical, a little like a Ghibli movie. I thought oh, that's great, I can enjoy this quite a bit!
But that didn't last.
Unfortunately, I have issues with the book. First and foremost being that it hovers between middle grade, young adult and adult all at once.
Let me explain.
The ages of the characters (20's) would suggest late young adult, or even adult. The theme of murder being what it was, does as well. This just didn't last.
They did not act their age for many (not all) interactions in this novel.
The interactions between Daci, Sorin and the villagers / professionals -- even the Elder, would border on young adult, even dipping into middle grade with how the adults behaved from time to time.
Even the melodramatic speeches (which, were very modern for a book that doesn't seem to take place in modern time--) were not something you'd expect in a book like this.
What I'm trying to say is, it's all over the place. Thematically, pacing, and even for the mystery.
The middle grade part is solely the relationship between Daci and Sorin. I cannot and will not believe that any functioning adult would lose their everloving shit over holding hands (and its equivalents), I'm sorry, it's just not how things work. Consistency would have been nice.
It also had some repetitive writing as well as way too many plot conveniences. I get that cozy fantasy is a thing, that it's supposed to be vibes and not story, for the most part. And that was fine for a chunk of the book, but all of it?
Who do I recommend the book to, though? I would say if you like really really low stakes in a book, with problems that are near instantly resolved (part for cozy, I get it).
If you like adult characters to interact with one another as if it's middle grade / young adult- that being a heavy focus on emotions and vibes, that never strays into anything attractive / sexual nor any adult themes.
If that's your jam, this book is for you. Just because I had problems with it, doesn't mean you will as well.
