The continuing solo adventures of Illyana Rasputin! Madelyne Pryor, the Goblin Queen, comes to Magik for help to retain control of Limbo. But what kind of threat requires two queens of Limbo to defeat it? More importantly, what kind of trouble can Illyana and Madelyne get into together?! Then, to save their friend, Magik and her fellow former New Mutant Mirage have no choice but to seek help from the order his ancestors founded. But will Illyana's new power make her a perfect recruit or a natural hell-raiser? And how will the traditional leader Dani Moonstar respond when Illyana starts to take charge? Featuring Magik and Mirage against an army of magic hunters - and a literal dragon!
An okay book. It was a bit too scattered for me. I did not see how the stories were connected it all seems just filler till the big fight at the end. Having said that if I was rating this on thd last issue/chapter I would gave given it 4 to 4.5 stars.
Magik must help Madelyne Pryor with an uprising in Limbo. Then she must save Cal with the help of Dani Moonstar/Mirage. However can the two of them work together in light of their recent falling out.
I don't know if the series was shortened and the writing team was trying to fit everything onto this last volume. It made the book feel rushed and disorganised. The book finishes with a variant cover gallery.
2.5 Stars. Unfortunately, I couldn't really get my head around what all was going on here. Magik and Mirage Went through a bunch of realms trying to separate Cal from Liminal, an entity that got bonded to him in the last Volume. They succeeded, but not without fighting special guardians who were part of an organization that Dani is a part of. That story was messy.... There was a story at the beginning with Magik and Goblin Queen helping establish order in Limbo. This was much more straight forward and enjoyable. Maybe skip this one....
i quite like how illyana is written here but i did have some issues with dani’s writing; not major things, i suppose, but it did feel a little clunky to me and almost out of character, in a way? i still can’t get behind dani going behind illyana’s back to warn cal about darkchylde and it’s really been bugging me. it felt very much like something just done to create some conflict to push all the cal stuff forward when dani and illyana’s relationship, to me, has always been the one out of everyone in the new mutants where they have the strongest trust for one another because of their lived experiences. i think dani’s respect and trust for illyana would be a lot stronger than her fear for darkchylde, which since their whole argument gets resolved rather quickly, didn’t even need to be a plot point at all, to be honest.
the idea of liminal was an interesting one but bringing cal into that plot, even when he is so clearly connected to it, just made everything feel a whole lot weaker. i found liminal a lot more interesting during his first appearance, whereas here he just didn’t seem all that intimidating. i don’t think he imposed as big of a threat as was intended to be? i just found his dialogue very lacklustre, in all honesty.
however, i would love to see more of magik in a solo setting. i think she really works well here and i would enjoy seeing allen writing another story for her. it reminded me a little bit of james robinson’s scarlet witch solo, where it was more focused on magic than anything else, which is always where i’ve felt illyana’s stories should be going. i’d love for yana to have more stuff in a similar vein to both that and her magik limited run from 1983. i’ve always felt like they’ve steered her character too far away from the arcane even when there’s a ton of interesting stuff they’ve yet to explore there. but even if i didn’t enjoy this as much as i’d hoped, i am genuinely interested in checking out allen’s moonstar run too, and hope that she gets the chance to write more for the new mutants characters!

First up, Magik and Madelyne Pryor team up to quell a Limbo rebellion. Then, Magik and Dani Moonstar re-team to try and resolve the problem of Liminal once and for all.
I think my favourite issue of this volume was actually the first one - it felt something like growth for Magik, rather than just retreading the same story points like the last volume. Hearing her compare her experiences to the Goblin Queen's was a good way to show how far they'd both come, and Jesus Hervas's artwork was probably the best of the volume as well.
The other four issues bring back the Liminal plot from the last volume, which just never really worked for me then, and didn't work for me this time either. There's a lot of bickering from Dani and Magik, and some pontificating from new bad guy The Embodiment, but not a lot of actual substance.
The artwork also takes a nosedive, with German Peralta returning for most of the issues, with a couple of fill-in pages here and there. The same problem persists from the last volume on this front as well - everything's really flat and lifeless, even in the middle of a battle.
There were kernels of good ideas in this series, but nothing that ever really made it to full bloom for me unfortunately.
I wish i liked this series more than I did. The writing from Allen is good, great even and the art is soldi throughout. But the plot feels like it has very little substance, nothing major happens to shift Magik as a character and the new cast, while likable, probably aren't going to show up in much else (aside from Allan's upcoming Mirage comic) anytime soon.
A fun read if you like Magik as a character, but not much more than that unfortunately.
I just love Magik. Such a cool character! The artwork was good and consistent which is important. Rarely was it stunning or incredibly creative. It's basically your standard Marvel art. The story was pretty decent. It took a direction I didn't expect and would have preferred it to remain in the darker tone seen in the first volume.
Read in single issues on Marvel Unlimited. My favorite ongoing of the ‘from the Ashes’ run. I’m very content to read more stories about Illyana and Dani.
Same as the last one — conflict/stakes are a little unclear and confusing but everything else is working great. Hope they do more with illyana as a solo character
