I got the audiobook for review on netgally.

I have not seen Diane Shiffer's online content because of mental health issues I need to stay away from social media. However her book felt like a warm hug full of kindness. She narrates her own book and its very engaging and is a very calming read as well as lifting your mood. Im sure her social media profiles has the same effect. Wouldn't definitely read more from gernif she writes more books.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

The Smallest of Joy's is a beautiful, vintage style book of wisdom that feels like advice from an older family member being passed down to the younger generations.
The book generally gives advice from the authors heart about finding and embracing the simple joys and beauties that occur within your life everyday.
The book has such a cosy and comforting vibe and feel to it and to make the most of it I would set aside a small period of time with a warm comforting drink to enjoy it to the max.

This beautiful little book fed my heart and soul. It made me think. It made me feel. It gave me strength to keep going.
I highly, highly recommend it. One of the very best (and most helpful) books I've read in a while. For me, it's right up there with Maya Angelou's memoirs, Brene Brown and Anne Lamott. Yes, that good.
It taught me new things and changed how I approach life.

Review of advanced copy received from NetGalley and Hay House LLC.

If you need a kind, reassuring word from a friend or grandma, this audiobook is for you. Her voice is very calming and caring. A balm to the soul.

This is an ode to being authentically you. Not to strive for perfection and shiny. But to step outside of the rat race, and accept yourself, scrapes and all. If you enjoy something, do it as often as possible, make it a priority and a ritual. This is a reminder to wear the clothes and don’t worry about how unique they make you. It’s great advice on how living intentionally every day adds up slowly into the life you want. A life you can find solace in. A life that is yours.

Diane speaks about “happy traps” and finding small joys in routine rituals like making coffee or showering. I think this is great advice in such a commercialized civilization. We are so trained to be productive and that happiness and peace has to cost money or be found in material items. This book is the exact opposite of that. A reminder to slow down and appreciate what you already have. To make “little alters of joy”.

Diane mentions a few times she has raging ADHD, as do I. So I could relate a lot to what that mind set is like. She is also a homebody like myself. I could find any excuse to stay inside, tucked in my home so could relate to that as well,

Her relationships with her daughter, Millen, and with the cats. Especially Mama Cat. Are heartwarming and beautiful.

The meditations at the end are soothing and something you could bookmark and come back to daily, or weekly to ground yourself and give yourself a time out during times of stress.

I think this book has something for everyone. Whether you’re anxious, stressed out, striving for perfection, or exhausted; or you are naturally inclined to show others love, kindness, and compassion but are never quite able to extend the same to yourself; or you’re the quirky one, the one on the outside, the over thinker, maybe even the one too afraid to be yourself, because you believe you aren’t worthy of the space you take - this book is for you, every part of you. It’s full of ways we can show ourselves love, kindness and real self care. This was my first time hearing Diane Shiffer, and yet so many of the things she said made it seem like she knew me and her words were for me. While listening I often found myself saying, “I needed to hear that”.
I obviously can’t write down every quote I loved from this book (because almost every chapter had something memorable), but I’ll leave you with some of my favourites.
-“An important part of caring for ourselves is treating ourselves with the same kindness we show to our most beloved ones. Not only in emergencies or when we finally earn it, but as a regular, everyday act of love. Because cruelty and neglect are never okay, not even when directed at ourselves. We tell ourselves we can bully our way to self improvement. We punish ourselves into better behaviour. We think that if we deprive ourselves enough we’ll finally become good enough. But deprivation rarely leads to growth. But love does. Safety does. Nourishment does. […] If you’re loving others well, then please […] make sure you’re loving yourself too”
-“What if I had let fear keep me frozen? Everything I wanted was on the other side of that fear. I’ve learned that the only way out is through – not around, not under, not tucked quietly into the back of your mind while you pretend it’s not there, through. Step by trembling step. There was a time I wanted to avoid it all and I did for a while, but avoidance didn’t bring peace, courage did.”
-“More and more, I have come to see that real self care, the kind that nourishes us in the long run, often doesn’t feel so cozy in the moment. Real self care looks like paying that bill you’ve been dreading. Making that phone call you’ve put off for far too long. Washing the dishes instead of letting them soak overnight. Getting up and going for that walk even when the couch is calling your name. Venturing out of your soft, comfortable bubble and stretching just a bit towards […] life. […] the best self care is the kind that makes life gentler for your future self. It’s doing the hard thing today so that tomorrow feels a little easier, a little lighter."

Thank you to Netgalley and Hay House LLC for the chance to listen and review.

I've never seen this author on social media, and while it's nice that the author narrated the audiobook being called darling etc by a stranger is downright uncomfortable for me (maybe a cultural thing?). I also found the constant giggling incredibly grating. I assume that's her style but to a newcomer it is off-putting.

Absolutely chock full of useful and actionable ideas to improve your life. Nice short chapters and nothing too heavy.

Delightful except for the writing/narrative style for me. I think it'll be a hit!

I listened to the audiobook, narrated by the author, and it felt like the warmest hug.

On its own, it’s probably a four-star book—but the emotion and level of care radiating from the author pushed it to five for me.

There are certain times of year when I feel more raw and vulnerable and find myself reaching for books that truly nourish my soul—this one absolutely delivered. If you’re in need of a deeply comforting read, this is it.

I loved this book so much. Every word of it. I want to begin again and savor each word anew. She sums up so well much of what I’ve learned in my 50+ years about joy and beauty and gratitude. She’s just your grandma sharing little words of wisdom and yet I cried from the sheer desperate need to hear some goodness in this world.

The Smallest of Joys feels like a hug in book form. It's a cozy, uplifting read and a welcome change of pace in today's often overwhelming world. The book gently reminds you to slow down and notice the beauty tucked into everyday moments-something I didn't realize I was craving until I found it here.

I wasn't familiar with the author's Instagram page before reading, but after finishing the book, I sought it out and found the same refreshing, delightful tone reflected there as well. Both the writing and the broader creative presence feel sincere, comforting, and quietly joyful.

This is the kind of book you reach for when you need reassurance, warmth, or simply a reminder that small joys still matter. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a gentle, feel-good read.

I was given a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I stumbled across Diane Shiffer’s Instagram, and instantly fell in love with her sweet voice, vintage items, and gentle way of encouraging love in all ways. This book is, as she says at the end of it, a gift to her readers. Divided into sections based on the seasons, each small essay encourages noticing the beauty all around us, loving everyone (including ourselves) fiercely, and being grateful for small moments of joy. Definitely recommend and I will definitely reread this.

I have followed Diane's journey on TikTok, loving how she brought me into her world of peace and little joys, almost romancing her life. There were so many little moments that I felt like her hand was on my shoulder, asking me to lean in, and remember what I already knew: kindness is not the same a being nice, loving myself means loving others better, and showing up as my full self means giving the world my best, are just a few of the lessons her book taught me. I see this as a book I will come back to every year and learn something new, to be reminded to once again to be present to my life and fully embrace myself, especially the things that may seem odd to others.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Hay House Audiobooks for an advance copy.

I’m not much of a social media follower, so I had no real sense of who or what I was going to be listening to when I downloaded ‘The Smallest of Joys.’ If anything, I had negative preconceptions of some beautiful, impeccably turned out middle-aged woman, an organizational whiz, perfect mother, wife, baker, crafter, etc etc. I’m also not much for being lectured to about how to do everything better, when I often struggle to get it done at all, much less in picture-perfect Instagram-able form.

So why bother reading/listening to something you already hate, in principle? The title intrigued me. There are times when the best you can hope for is the smallest of joys, when you ‘get’ the futility of striving for anything more. I wasn’t looking for a magic wand solution or the kind of high energy motivational sermon that would make me feel more lethargic rather than pumped up to go.

To my surprise, that’s what I got, slowly and gradually, as I listened to Diane tell her truths. Many times as I started, I wanted to quit, telling myself she was oversimplifying even ordinary lives. By the second chapter, I caught on. What we are socialized to believe is essential to happiness is just that—what we are taught to believe, a message continually reinforced even by people selling a simple life. But she isn’t one of those. At the bottom of each of her brief essays, which together form a narrative whole but are also perfect to dip into when you feel the need or desire, is not revolutionary. She just draws on anecdotes and memories from her own life, familiar enough to feel like universal truths. Be true to yourself. Be kind. Be present. Set yourself little ‘joy traps,’ like hiding a small special treat to ‘accidentally’ come upon, surrounding yourself with things you love that may be old junk to others but are calming and comfortable to you. Having a warm drink and a treat just because your soul needs it, without justifying the calories or the time taken. Believe in your own beauty and worth even while others think you odd in character and appearance. In fact, be even odder.

I didn’t have to go out and buy all kinds of new instruments or supplements to reshape myself according to a supposedly ‘new and improved’ script. And I don’t have a long list of improvements to work on. I just feel comforted, and that’s a good enough reason to read or listen to Diane.

Book Review: The Smallest of Joys by Diane Shiffer

Rating: 3.5 Stars

I recently picked up The Smallest of Joys by Diane Shiffer, and it’s like receiving a warm, comforting hug in book form. Diane, who many know as the beloved internet nana @shifferdiane with nearly 2 million followers, has crafted a heartfelt guide to finding peace and happiness in everyday life. If you’re someone who appreciates the quiet, gentle moments—cups of tea, cozy porches, and the charm of vintage treasures—this book will definitely speak to you.

The book feels like a series of thoughtful letters from a wise grandparent, filled with warmth, humor, and encouragement. Diane invites readers to slow down, embrace their quirks, and treat themselves with kindness in a world that often pushes us to rush and criticize ourselves. The short chapters cover everything from cultivating self-love and patience during life’s transitions to maintaining a tidy home without feeling overwhelmed. There’s also a lovely focus on healing heartbreak, developing a positive body image, and finding magic in the smallest moments.

One of the things I appreciated most was how the book gently nudges you to pause and notice the simple joys tucked into daily life—a philosophy that felt especially comforting during unpredictable times when disappointments can feel all too common. Diane’s blend of vintage charm and candid reflections creates a soothing atmosphere that encourages mindfulness and gratitude.

That said, I do wish the book had included some illustrations to complement its cozy vibe—it felt like it would have been the perfect touch to enhance the reading experience. Which is why I’m giving it a solid 3.5 stars.

Overall, The Smallest of Joys is a lovely little invitation to embrace stillness, silliness, and self-compassion. Whether you’re already a fan of Diane’s social media presence or encountering her wisdom for the first time, this book offers a sweet reminder that kindness—especially toward yourself—can truly transform how you experience life. It’s a modern antidote to hustle culture and relentless self-critique, perfect for anyone looking to slow down and savor the quiet beauty around them.

I received this as an ALC from #NetGalley. I honestly didn't know what to expect because I have never seen Diane Shiffer's YouTube channel. I was absolutely blown away. I devoured this in two sittings. It was just released and this is so worth the time and effort to listen too

So... This is basically your loving grandmother sitting down to talk to you about life and finding joy. She's around 70 years old and loves to wear and use vintage things and clothing and all sorts of knick-knacks on the shelves and she's a cat lady. Lots of cats. Feral ones too. She is a single mom who has 5 kids all grown and one special needs daughter who she adopted as a baby, that has Down Syndrome. The stories that she shares about her will melt your heart and literally make you feel better and cry. I kid you not, she made me cry quite a few times throughout this book. In a good way.

I love her wisdom and you can hear her smile though her voice. Her laugh is infectious and reminds me of an old coworker of mine. I just want to sit on her back porch with some coffee and talk about life and be there for one of her quiet time moments and take in everything.

She also has ADHD, which I do as well. Her stories around that are wonderful. She has a great story about her son playing in the yard and a cranky neighbor coming over and being mean to him and all he did was smile at her and she threw up her hands and walked away.

Lots of deep philosophical moments in this book and now I want to dive in and take notes and relisten to it. I have yet to check out her YouTube channel.

So, yes 5...no...6 stars if I could give it on here. Lots of smiles and tears. Happy ones. Oh and there's a bunch of extra stuff at the end. Some great meditations!! I wasn't expecting that at all.

Just go buy it.

Thanks so much to #NetGalley and #HayHouse for giving me an ALC. I'll be purchasing this right after I post this.

Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House for the opportunity to listen to and review this book. I listened to a free audio of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I have enjoyed many Instagram videos by Diane Shiffer, so when I found this book there was no doubt in my mind it would be my next read. I will preface with the fact that I generally listen to audiobooks on at least a x2 speed, however with The Smallest of Joys it was far more enjoyable to listen to it at its regular speed! Diane did a wonderful job narrating her book. I feel had another narrator been used. It would not have been as meaningful or impactful. (One small note, it felt like the pause before chapter 18 was a bit longer than necessary. I actually double checked that the audio was still playing at that point).

I enjoyed multiple sections of this book immensely and already recommended it to a friend prior to having finished. I do feel like there was some overlap with chapters… A small amount of repetitiveness to be honest. However, the lessons/meanings that Diane was trying to impart were very well done. I will say that there were a few times when she choked up due to emotion, which made me cry as well. I can see this being a book that readers will re-visit from time to time either for the “warm hug” feeling or because something in it calls to them.

The Smallest of Joys by Diane Shiffer is such a sweet, uplifting read that really lives up to the aesthetic of its lovely floral cover. The core message about finding contentment exactly where you are is so grounding, especially the beautiful idea of sending your joy out into the world rather than just keeping it to yourself. Shiffer’s concepts like "happy traps" and keeping a "joy folder" are such practical, charming ways to curate a positive headspace. One of the most powerful takeaways is the perspective on "tiny things with heavy weight," which really makes you stop and appreciate the small moments that actually ground our lives. Her advice on not giving people power and ensuring their fear doesn't become your cage is the kind of bold, necessary wisdom everyone needs to hear. The imagery she uses, like that specific scene of a postcard with kids' creates such a warm, vivid picture of family life. I also loved her approach to "meanies," specifically the mantra of making your happy stronger than their mean and choosing to show grace even when it feels completely undeserved. My only real gripe was the narration speed of the audiobook, which felt a bit like wading through molasses at first, but once I toggled that speed up it became a much more enjoyable experience. Overall, it’s a gentle but firm reminder to let your best be enough.

THE SMALLLEST OF JOYS written by Diane Shiffer is an invitation to slow down, embrace self-love, and welcome a little stillness (maybe even silliness!) into your days.

This is a really good book for those looking to slow down. . . . for books with that hygge vibe. . . cozy self help. I was approved by @netgalley and @penguinrandomhouse for the audiobook version of this and really enjoyed it. The cover is super cute too. . .so a coffee table book would also be a nice addition. It's narrated by the author herself. Imagine Aunt Bea from the Andy Griffith show, and this is the type of vibe you get. You can almost picture yourself sitting in a vintage home listening to your friend's grandma share her tips to help you live a simpler life. If you get the audiobook version, at the end, there's some really nice guided meditations included.

Whether you’ve been following Diane for years or are just meeting her now, this book is like a warm teacup in your hands and a soft blanket around your shoulders. A modern antidote to hustle culture and self-criticism, it’s a reminder that kindness—especially toward yourself—can be a powerful way to live.

I received a free ALC of The Smallest of Joys: How to Create Your Own Magic, Let Your Best Be Enough & Find Contentment Exactly as You Are by Diane Schiffer from the publisher and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This audiobook was quite literally a joy to listen to. While the ideas themselves aren’t earth-shattering, they don’t need to be—this book shines in its gentle, beautifully written reminders to slow down and notice the magic already tucked into everyday life.

I especially loved the small, practical ways Diane encourages you to create joy for yourself—like leaving little surprises for your future self to discover. It’s such a simple concept, but it completely reframed how I think about caring for future me, and honestly, I can’t wait to try it.

The book is structured in short, bite-sized essays, which makes it perfect for busy days when you just need a quick reset or a moment of calm. And as a fellow “anti-suffering and pain” cat lover… I felt very seen 🐾

This is one of those books that doesn’t try to overwhelm you—it simply meets you where you are and gently reminds you that your best is already enough. I’ll absolutely be picking up a physical copy for reference because I know I’ll want to revisit so many of these moments.

🎧 Narration Review:
The fact that this is narrated by Diane Schiffer herself made it such a special experience. Her voice is full of warmth and genuine kindness—it truly felt like she was speaking directly to my heart. The tone is soothing, encouraging, and incredibly personal, which elevated the entire book for me. If you’re choosing a format, I 100% recommend the audiobook for this reason alone.

This book felt like a big warm hug I didn’t want to end, one of the cosiest books I’ve read this year! Told across the four seasons, it gently explores how to find joy in everyday moments, and it left me feeling lighter, calmer, and more appreciative of life’s small details. I feel inspired to bring more joy into my own life, especially when it comes to being kinder to myself and embracing who I am.

I listened to the audiobook, and hearing Diane narrate it herself made it feel even more personal. Her voice is so comforting and gentle, it’s like you can hear her smiling through the words, and the guided meditations at the end were a lovely addition that I know I’ll return to.

This is a beautiful reminder to slow down, be kinder to yourself, and notice the joy that’s already there.

This felt less like reading a book and more like sitting on a porch with someone’s very kind grandmother who insists you stay a little longer and have another cup of tea. ☕

It’s gentle, cozy, and full of soft reminders to slow down and treat yourself with a little more grace. The chapters are short and easy to slip into, like tiny notes of encouragement you didn’t know you needed until you read them.

That said, if you’re looking for something deep or super thought-provoking, this isn’t that book. It doesn’t dig into heavy psychology or life-changing revelations. It keeps things light, simple, and sweet. Think comfort read, not soul excavation.

Some of the advice felt familiar, but the delivery is what makes it special. There’s a sincerity to it that feels like it actually means what it’s saying, not just recycling trendy self-help phrases.

Overall, it’s a warm little pause button. Not groundbreaking, but genuinely comforting in a quiet, steady way.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.

I think I will have to follow this lady, actually. A lot of what she writes in her book is what I (more or less successfully) try to incorporate into my life, and she seems to share a lot of my values, both politically and regarding how to live your life to the fullest.

This book definitely felt very cosy, and I can see why she got comments about being the grandma someone never had. This book definitely has grandma vibes, which makes it all the better. And she definitely has a point about making joy a priority. As someone with more than enough reasons to not be very joyful, it does take work to find joy, but it also definitely makes life so much better. Small things like going to a specific sushi place because you can see the chefs make the sushi right in front of you (even with a tiny flamethrower! Reason enough to order a specific type of sushi!), or sitting in the park with an audiobook, or getting a pair of insoles so that I can wear my favourite shoes again (which became my favourite partially because I got a pair of lace shoelaces that looks very nice with them) don't feel very big, but they definitely affect my mood a lot, and it's exactly these small things that the author encourages you to do.

A lot of what she says isn't exactly original (such as not needing to wait until Jan 1st to start anew), but it's still a good reminder, and combined with the way in which she writes, I definitely think this book is worth picking up.

Having this book narrated by the author also just adds an extra layer of cosiness, so that the audiobook is definitely also something I recommend, though the tiny illustrations in the written version are also very cute, so it depends on what the reader prefers! Definitely recommend both.

I have been feeling overwhelmed and wanting to choose an uplifting book, this was a perfect choice! Diane is so precious! I couldn’t help but smile while listening to her tell anecdotal stories. She reminds me of my Nana whom I miss. I recommend this book to anyone needing to feel themselves again, to anyone who feels they’ve lost some of their sparkle. Her stories are so full of love and kindness that you feel it through her words. I especially love when audiobooks are read by the author.

What an absolute gem of a book. I am new to the delightful, calming world of Diane Shiffer but I am now converted.

From the get-go, this book just made me relax. Narrated by Diane herself, her voice is gentle, kind, calm and her beautiful giggle is just so wholesome. Hearing her talk about her vintage items, her family, her tranquil home, her reminders to slow down - it's almost meditative. There are meditations at the end but just listening to her speak is calming enough.

Her little tips on finding the joy in the smallest of things (a ray of sunlight through the curtains, a spiderweb after a light rain, the steam of tea from your favourite cup, the sound of birds in the morning etc) is a gentle reminder to just slow down, take it all in. There are also plenty of other ideas like Sit and Stare moments (literally just that, not meditating or thinking of anything, just allowing yourself to relax and linger even just for a few precious moments), Happy Traps (setting up little joyful future things to make you happy - a note tucked in a pocket, a piece of candy hidden in the glovebox, a spray of lavender on your pillow for when you go to bed) or starting a journal/social media page/picture book with notes or photos of one little thing a day that brings you joy. There are so many lovely ideas and, even if you don't do them, they are still gorgeous to envision doing them.

This is a thoroughly charming book that I can envision rereading again and again, whether to remind me of ideas or just to hear Diane's warm, comforting blanket of a voice. Thoroughly recommended.

audiobook read by the author (very good)

I didn't high hopes for this book written by a social media grandma, but it was newly available so I checked it out from the library. Now I can several friends to buy this book as a gentle gift to listen to. I recommend this book to a shy, quiet, bookish types who does too much and feel inadequate, which I feel we all are at one time or another. It hit me at the perfect time when I myself was very tired, and I listened to the entire thing in one sitting. It is a very warm hug of the book, and I enjoyed it very much.

The sweet-looking cover caught my eye, and I am so glad I picked this one up. It is not often that a book reminds us that our best is enough and that being ourselves is more than okay. This is definitely a book to savor. Diane Shiffer was the perfect narrator for her own book. At first, I thought her laugh was a little annoying, but after a few chapters it started to make me smile. This warm, uplifting collection is one I will come back to whenever I need a reminder that I am enough and that my weirdness is part of what makes me, me.

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Everyone's favorite nana! Diane Shiffer came to my IG feed courtesy of my sister Rachel, a vintage lover. I've followed Diane for years and just love her. This book is a love letter to slowing down, a permission slip to live the life that's best for you. Interspersed with her lifestyle essays and wisdom are tidbits from her life. When I learned that she adopted a baby with Down Syndrome and currently lives with this now adult daughter, I loved Diane even more. She never comes across as too cloying or pedantic. In her own words, "this is your life and you are allowed to love it."
