A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.

‘Don’t Hike Naked in Switzerland’ from Lonely Planet is a must-read for any traveller hoping to avoid making a faux pas on their next trip. Written in a light-hearted tone and wonderfully illustrated (including fun extras like mazes and flow-chart quizzes), it is designed to provide a basic overview of travel etiquette and to point readers in the direction of areas to consider and research further before they visit another culture.
A lot of the tips are common sense, but there are some interesting and genuinely useful facts too. For example, I wish I’d known about the custom of placing cash on a tray when making a purchase before I visited Japan, and it’s always handy to know that some everyday gestures in the UK have very different meanings and can be considered deeply offensive in other parts of the world.
The ethically-minded traveller will find plenty of helpful pointers too, from choosing where to stay to ordering appropriate foods to ensuring their money goes to the right people.
Overall, an excellent, engaging, high-level book.

I was expecting something a little different. It is a fine travel guide with some practical tips, but the title made me expected a bit more. On one hand I was expecting more outrageous stories, but it wasn't as uproariously funny as I hoped - on the other hand, I found many of the tips mundane and worry about people that actually need them. A little extra quirky for a travel book but overall underwhelming.

It's an interesting book if you plan to travel around the globe or you are just interested in customs in other places. I'm not sure if it's completely accurate everywhere, but it was a quick little read.
