The Demon King

Rate this book
The third and final book in The Nightfall Saga, the thrilling and action-packed epic fantasy series set in the world of The Demon Cycle, from New York Times bestselling author Peter V. Brett

“Heart-wrenching, smart, and modern . . . The Desert Prince has set a new standard for fantasy.”—Wesley Chu, author of The War Arts Saga

He is known as The Prince of Lies. The Father of Demons. He is Alagai Ka, the Demon King.

Though humanity won a hard-fought victory in its war against demonkind, the Demon King has escaped in search of a new queen to restart his dark hive, and has found signs of one on a distant shore.

But pursuing him are humanity's best Olive Paper and Darin Bales, whose legendary parents brought demonkind low once before. Olive and Darin will not rest until the demons are defeated, and so relentless is their hunt that they have followed Alagai Ka across the sea to a strange new land.

There they discover a culture unlike any they have never known, where demons live alongside humans as servants and companions. And there they meet the demon's masters--including a seductive prince who is drawn to Olive--who seem unable or unwilling to understand the danger they are in.

Because no human is safe from the Demon King's thirst for war--and every human must join the battle against his kingdom of death.

It was such a joy writing this book. I was planning this adventure for years and it cane out beautifully. All the stuff that made Demon Cycle great but totally different too. One of the best books I’ve ever written.

In this finale of the Nightfall Saga, the sequel trilogy to the Demon Cycle trilogy, Olive and Darin follow Alagai Ka, the Demon King, to a strange, unknown land across a vast sea. There they meet an advanced society whose elite uses demons as their slaves and companions, to the benefit of the entire population. As a result of this use of demons and magic, the elite are very strong magically, which puts Olive and Darin in a difficult, inferior position. This concept of cohabitation is also understandably alien to both of them, as they have only ever heard and experienced that with demons, it’s kill or be killed. They are initially welcomed, but it soon transpires that the society called the Hive is not as utopian as they make it out to be. And Olive and Darin‘s goal remains to kill the Demon King so he can‘t start a new demon hive with a new queen.

I must admit that I was initially not happy to leave behind
The Hollow, Tibbet’s Brook, and Krasia with all their characters, but I soon grew to appreciate this new world; I found the concept fascinating. In the city of Safehold, we had already seen how demons and humans coexist, but this takes it to a whole new level: complete demon domination. I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop; I really wanted the demons to escape captivity and destroy the hegemony of the conceited upper classes. But I’m not telling you whether I got my wish as it would be a huge spoiler. Let me just say it speaks of the humans’ hubris to underestimate demons in general and the Demon King in particular. Alagai Ka as a mind demon can manipulate and alter people’s minds, unbeknownst to them. So yes, people should be afraid rather than complacent.

In the previous books, I have really enjoyed seeing Olive finding the power of her intersexuality and now she meets several of other so-called Joined, male-female like her, or male-male, in this new society, where they are revered, attractive, and powerful. I find it refreshing that intersexuality is not grounds for ostracism – it is seen as a strength and advantage.

All in all, I enjoyed this book (and this trilogy in general) immensely. Olive and Darin are just great characters, children of previous PoV characters, and it was thrilling to see them navigate a new world. I‘m still not sure, however, how I feel about the action taking place only in this new country. As immersive as it was, I missed the old characters. And the ending was just too open for me. We get an idea about what Darin and Olive are doing now, but I wanted to actually see them, see more reunions. But I guess that it’s a good thing that I want more – a sign of how much I loved it. The ending leaves me hoping that there will be another novella (there are four so far in this universe), which will deal with that future.

I'm just blown away at how good it was. To finish what is essentially a 8 book series in such a way is incredible, somehow it felt completely new and yet delivered a perfect conclusion to all that had gone on before. I might just have to go and reread the entire series again now.

Copy received from Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

At the end of the previous book, Darin and Olive disappeared in order to hunt down the Alagai Ka and destroy him once and for all. In The Demon King, they almost immediately coming across a whole new society that we have never been introduced to before where the people have enslaved demons and treat them the same way our societies treat cattle. You can probably see where this is going.

Where the Demon Cycle sometimes felt bloated and meandering, the Nightfall saga is far more streamlined and focused on the end goal. The Demon King doesn’t waste its page count and it manages to complete the trilogy in an interesting and thrilling way.

I very much enjoyed the story. The land of Hive, which is only introduced in this story, is well done and I felt I very much understood this society despite never having heard of it before. It felt as real as Hollow or Krasia. I also liked that Brett took a deeper look into the people who eat demon meat and how they are treated in Hive. It’s rather brutal but it helps to deepen our understanding and it gives Darin a chance to completely shine.

I adored Darin in this book. He really comes into his own in this book. In the previous two books, I really liked him but he was constantly in Olive’s shadow but The Demon King really gives him a chance to shine. He is such a sweet character and I really enjoyed the direction his story took. Olive continues to be Olive. I like her character and I also like that she finds a place where she can belong. She is born to be a leader and the story in Hive allows her to take control and be the leader that everyone knows she is.

I also liked the characters introduced in this book and it’s a shame that this is the last book and we don’t get to see any more of them. Hive is a very interesting society and very different form the regions we already know about. It does feel like a little bit of a waste to only see it in one book.

I really enjoyed The Demon King. It brings the series to a close in a very satisfying way and I very much liked the growth of Darin’s character and Olive’s ending. And, on a selfish note, the lack of my least favourite character in any of Brett’s novels, Leesha, was barely present so I didn’t have to suffer her.

Before I start, heed my warning, you NEED to have read the previous two books in the Nightfall Saga before starting this but don’t panic, you can hold off the preceding Demon Cycle pentalogy and go back to it later - you’ll want to!

Brett blew me away with this concluding book, picking up directly from the ending of the Hidden Queen to follow Olive Paper and Darin Bales as they track the fleeing Demon King across the ocean to lands new, where the perspective of the people who live there on demon-kind is completely different!

These new lands had developed and evolved following their own distinct path, establishing a culture, mythology, religion and perspective that brought a freshness to the whole trilogy that I didn’t expect but, totally loved.

This isn’t a whopper of a book either, so Brett’s masterful management of pace and prose carried me along to a satisfying conclusion.

This is the third book in the Nightfall Saga and the eighth book overall set in Peter V Brett's world where humans and demons are forever at war.

Although it only officially released two days ago I actually received it six days early (another plus point to pre-ordering) and after quickly finishing the book I was currently reading I couldn't put it down.

This time around we are following two well loved characters to a different part of the world where things are very different to anything seen before. Each has their own POV chapters which I loved for very different reasons and both explore even more about their very unique personalities and thoughts about how they live their life. I did have a favourite which I'll not reveal here, but all I'll say is I defy anyone to not fall in love with them because they're such a wonderful person who I'd do anything for.

As I said the land our protagonists travel to is completely different to what we've seen. I won't go as far as to say I hated the natives but I do think they're insane and incredibly naive. BUT, I do like their open and inclusive feelings about gender, which is one of the main themes Peter V Brett has touched heavily upon throughout this series which is something I've loved about this trilogy. Yes it's about fighting demons who want to enslave and destroy mankind, but there are some very important topics being addressed and explored.

I almost forgot, there's also a third POV, it's not anywhere near as present as the main two but it's something we've never had before and it was a surprising and very welcome addition.

I loved this book, I found all the characters, whether they be familiar or new, to be very well fleshed out and it was a fitting end to a series I've been reading for many a year. It's a shame it's the end of the road as it feels like there could be more stories told but I was very satisfied with how it turned out.

The Demon King is the third and concluding book of Peter V Brett’s Nightfall Saga and, it seems, the author’s final novel set in the Demon Cycle world for the foreseeable future. You will need to have read the previous two books in the Nightfall Saga before embarking on this one, but not necessarily have read the preceding Demon Cycle pentalogy.
This book did not go in the direction I was expecting it to – and that’s no bad thing. Given that this is the author’s eighth novel in this world, it felt entirely fresh. The plot picks up directly from the ending of the Hidden Queen, following protagonists Olive Paper and Darin Bales as they track the fleeing Demon King across the ocean to lands new. The people there have a view of demon-kind which is very different from anything we have seen before.
The Demon King has a remarkably slim page count compared to the author’s other works, but I never felt short changed. The pacing of the story worked well for me and I zipped my way through quite happily.
I do hope the author decides to revisit this world in the future, but if not this is a fitting end to the series. Recommended.

After the battle in the demon hive, Olive and Darin dissipated and chased Alagai Ka, the Demon King, through the magical vents of the earth and end up on the other side of the ocean.

Once there, they find an entire new culture centered on the demons. One that keeps them as companions and servants.

As different as life in this new land is, Olive and Darin find a place amongst it's people as they aren't as out of place there as they are in Thesa and Krasia.

Even while they are trying to make allies to help find and eliminate Alagai Ka, he's enacting his own plans of bending the demons in this new land to his will.

I've been dipping in and out of this series for about 15 years now. I remember starting the Warded Man about a year after it came out and I was obsessed. I waited for each subsequent book and loved all of them to one degree or another.

Not all of them were my favorite books, but they all take up space in my mind. The wide range of characters and perspectives is deep and complex and there are many layers to their motivations and drives. There's just so much to dive into.

This world is so expansive and rich and even 8 novels and 5 (?) novellas just didn't feel like enough to satisfy my need to know about this world.

As much as I have loved my time in this world and following these characters, I understand that this story is done now. I hate it and love it.

This was definitely worth the time to read. Here's to hoping that there are more stories in this setting still swirling inside Mr. Brett's brain.

For instance, there's a whole new continent to explore and surely, Krasia, Thesa, and Hive aren't the only populated on the planet. I'd still love to see a map of the world.

3,5/5.

Not the conclusion I was hoping for! This second series was never up to its original five tomes cycle, but that final book was the lowest of the three. I enjoy the setting of the Hives and it had a lot of potential. Unfortunately, Brett seem to takes a lot of pages to ell the same thing over and over again, letting very few pages to truly makes his world and characters evolve, Darin had its moment, but not enough! The ending felt rush and too easy.

I'm very curious to see what the author will write next, and will read it without a doubt, but The Nightfall Saga felt too YA for me.

How could I ever rate this less than five stars ? This is the fabulous conclusion to the Nightfall trilogy and it’s everything I wanted and more ! Olive and Darin have followed the Demon King across the ocean to what is to them a very alien society . Hive does not flee from Demons but live alongside although technically the Demons are little more than slaves . It’s a way of life that’s evolved but this is no perfect utopia, no even here there’s dissent and well conceit too . Olive and Darin know that if allowed the Demons will rise up and kill them all and that’s exactly what the Demon King has in his oh so crafty mind !
We get so much of Darin here and I loved all the insights . If Olive is your favourite then fear not because she certainly gets to shine oh so bright ! In a land of new characters of course some stand out more than others but I have to say it’s the sheer arrogance of those in the upper echelons that simply astounded me . This author gives us characters to love and cheer for but he never makes it easy for them and I think that’s why the world he has created feels credible and without a doubt one that’s easy to immerse yourself in .
This voluntary take is of an advanced copy

"Trouble has a way of finding you, like it or not."

Olive and Darin are off on their own in a new, strange land in this final book in the trilogy. In pursuit of the Demon King after their clash in book two, they instead find a society that has turned demons into, essentially, livestock and pets. A society that doesn't understand their urgency in locating the king of all demons, and instead finds the two of them barbaric, uncultured, and not to be trusted. But in the midst of this distrust they find (somewhat reluctant) allies, and have to find a way to not only find the demon king, but make an entire culture see how everything they know may have been built on lies.

So for the good, I liked how this book really never felt slow or bogged down in minutiae. This is a fast-paced book from beginning to end, and I was really engaged with it the whole time. I also really liked this new society the author created, and allowing our two main characters space to really develop outside of The Hollow. The previous books were fun, but sometimes I felt like Olive and Darin especially were upstaged by some of the supporting cast. Finally, I really liked how this book felt like an honest ending to a series, rather than leaving things up in the air for maybe-someday sequels that never come.

For the things I liked less, I kind of didn't like how we met all these interesting new characters and this interesting new society in the very last book. It didn't feel like we spent enough time with them or their city to really see growth, or to really get a sense for the society itself. We have the main city, and then....everything outside that's kind of hand-waved away. Which is fine! All the action is here in the city anyway, but I couldn't help but feel like this might have been a better idea on its own, not as the third book in a trilogy that didn't start there. Also, and I realize this is going to sound like a contradiction because I listed it as one of my positives, I kind of didn't like how the ending to a whole 3 book saga (very ending spoilers here) .

But this was still an enjoyable end to a really fun trilogy of books! There's lots to like in all of these books, and I'm glad I picked up The Warded Man years ago.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with a free ecopy in exchange for an honest review.

A bit of a disappointing finale

For the end of the series I found the book too short for my liking, and it was just lacking that feel I've had from the other books. It feels like it was rushed out to meet some deadline and not given the time it deserved to be a fitting ending.

The Demon Cycle is a favourite series of mine, and I was really excited to dive back into this world with The Demon King....boooyy it delivered, and then some. Continuing the journey exactly where we left off in the previous book - on the hunt that takes our main characters far away and introduces a new civilisation with all the challenges that come with it. As always, the writing is perfectly paced, and I love how Olive and Darin's POVs were utilised perfectly. The subtle nudges of info were delightful giving you the perfect amount of information to juggle your memory from previous events if you need it.
The switch between them was perfectly timed and so satisfying. Plenty of action, and I really enjoyed the gripping feeling of high stakes that circulates like a hum through you while reading the book. Everything was perfectly wrapped up without loose ends, but low-key, I really hope it wasn't the last we see of this gripping, immersive world.

I’m glad this book got more back in line with what I expect from Brett. Book 2 was a bit of a disappointment for me, but this picked up right after that and actually moved. It’s set in a different part of the world that is much different from Olive and Darin’s land. But even as they learn more, they know the demon king is lurking. It’s nice to see the main characters grow and interact with new characters. The pacing of the story is top notch. And while I’ve enjoyed this world, I’m kind of glad there is closure and it is over. Overall, a solid book.

The Demon King feels like the book this sequel trilogy has been building toward, sending Darin and Olive across the sea into a civilization that has learned to live with demons rather than simply fear them. The new setting gives Peter V. Brett room to stretch his world in surprising ways, and watching the pair confront unfamiliar politics, powers, and expectations adds real tension to what could have been a straightforward hunt. The alternating narration remains sharp, and the reminders of past events are woven in cleanly enough that the story never stalls. The final act moves with breathless momentum and delivers a conclusion that feels earned, even if it leaves just enough space for more tales in this world.

Thanks to Del Rey and NetGalley for the opportunity to read the ARC.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC of The Demon King by Peter V. Brett. All thoughts are my own.

This was easily my favourite book in the series so far.

The new setting and characters made the story feel fresh and exciting, while still feeling firmly grounded in the world that’s already been built. I really enjoyed getting to explore a different side of the universe, and the new relationships added a lot to the story.

The pacing was especially strong. It kept things moving in a way that made the book genuinely hard to put down, with enough tension and momentum to stay engaging throughout.

Overall, this was a really enjoyable read and a standout entry in the series for me. If you’ve been followingi the series, this one is well worth the time.

I will say that I wish we had a little more closure at the end. I’d have liked to have known more about certain characters.

This was a pretty sad end to what I’ve always thought of as one of the better fantasy series I’ve ever read. Instead of building on what came before it, this novel instead takes the sequel series’s main characters and dumps them into a roster of side characters so lacking in complexity (except for maybe 1) that the main characters look like Gordian knots by comparison.

While the entire novel is one fresh take, it feels like the author simultaneously has this idea he wants to explore without actually wanting to write more in this world he so lovingly crafted over the course of 17 years. Practically every old character other than Olive and Darin get lip service at best, and those most important to the story up until this point (Leesha, etc) show up for almost literally 2 paragraphs. Why even bother? There are more open questions about the end of the last novel and where it left Thesa (the entire focus of the last 7 books) than there are redactions in the Epstein files.

Overall this felt more like a cash grab from a bored author than a good faith attempt to provide a satisfying, inclusive ending to the story of a small farm boy from Tibbet’s Brook.

Half-heartedly written by a tranquillized weasel.

I've read all the previous books and had just finished the butter cookies and demon claws novella before starting on this and I have to say I was disappointed by how short the book was. In fact part of me was beginning to panic as I reached the final third of the book and wondering how the story was going to be wrapped up.

My big issue is that the final battle felt lacklustre and was over too quickly. If there's going to be a big battle against Alagai Ka and it's the last book in the series then go balls to the walls on it. Have Darin skate back to Thesa and bring Jardir to help when the demons break subjugation. Or
have Arlen and Renna come back from the core to help Darin when matching wills with Alagai Ka. They can just be there in misted form / beings of magic. I don't know, it just felt like they get into the hive, kill Alybrax, then twat Aligai Ka, give Leesha the heads up and then boom, book over. There's been so many great characters over the 8 books and 5 novellas, could Peter not have found a way to get some of them involved?

Despite that, there were loads of cool concepts in the book. It would have been great to explore hive and it's history a bit more, learn about Lazar or the eater communities. Even a map of this new continent would have been nice, I'm a sucker for a map at the start of a fantasy book. I guess a bit more time to explore this new land and closure that felt more meaningful would have been nice but I enjoyed the book and I'll happily read any more books/ novellas that are released for it.

Cannot recommend this series enough.

The final book in The Nightfall Saga feels like an entirely new series, with brand new characters, and entirely new culture (Which our mc's are absolutely disgusted with lol) and finally getting closure for the events at the end of The Demon Cycle.

The way The Nightfall Saga is written means you don't need to have read The Demon Cycle to get into it. And if you're someone that looks for tw, this series has a lot less fucked up shit going on. So it's easier to get into in that sense.

The 2 mc's, Olive and Darren. I love them so much, they're so cool. Olive being a badass warrior prince, which is a farcry from the spoilt princess they grew up as.
And Darren, such a sweet soul, who has cool powers that let's him manipulate his molecular structure. Basically no cell can hold him XD

Yeah don't sit on the fence for this series, definitely worth your time.

I 've been a huge fan of Peter V. Brett' s books from the very first one and have read each one multiple times.
The strong focus on Olive and Darrin in this one made me realise that I don't like Olive at all. In earlier books of this series, there was so many more lovable protagonists and more stories told about beloved characters that I missed this until now although yes, Olive has been a major part of the other two books of this series.
But here, I cannot ignore how shallow she feels to me, so easily impressed by the next attractive person.
This has nothing to ho with her nature as a "Joined" (very nice choice of word btw) but everything with thick muscles and kissable lips. I like that she finds a purpose in the end.

In the contrary, I like Darrin's story and his development so very much. I always found it painful to read how effected he was by the world around him and how shy and hiding this and his parents' stories made him. Really like the outcome of his arc.
As for what happens... Hive remains shallow to me, I would have liked to read about it earlier in the series, now it' s like an afterthought, some kind of could have been or alternate universe.
And... No Krasians in this book. I came to love their culture and intrigues so much, I really missed them here. The people of Hive are no replacement although just as strict in their own rules when it fits them.
Still worth a read but by far the weakest book of all.

This truly feels like an end of an era. I’ve been a fan of the Demon Cycle books for so long, and the Nightfall Saga has been such a treat, letting me return to this world. This was a fantastic ending. I loved that it focused on Olive and Darin since they are both such great characters. Seeing a new part of the world and how they deal with demons was so interesting and I was immediately invested. I’ll miss these books but am glad we got such a satisfying ending.

Unstoppable

After starting these 3 books, I was unable to put them down until I had read them all. Love the fact we have neuro divergent characters in a mainstream book so cleverly written. Everyone should read all 8 books, you will not go wrong. The bonds between the characters feel alive and authentic. Thank you for your work.

Disappointing end to an epic series.

With the displacement that occurred at the end of the 2nd book of the Nightfall Saga, all the lingering plot lines get left behind for a new cast of characters, but the same problem. Felt quite reductive, and honestly not at the quality demonstrated in the original trilogy.

Well we definitely aren't home anymore. Olive and Darin pursued the Demon King to a new land where nothing makes sense when the humans here are working with the demons...this had to be the most wtf moment I had reading this series. Darin the entire time was just me lol. Olive being Olive had to play the political game however just like her mother she let's her feelings get involved which is never good for anyone when dealing with these creatures. The Demon King only wants blood, war and to wipe out the humans. Especially upon learning a strong Queen is shackled by these people and that's not dangerous at all...I loved the similarities as well as the differences, as always PVB kills it in the culture description department. This epic tale finally came to an end but I don't think we've seen the last of this world.

This was a huge let down for me. I'm glad they found him. I'm glad they killed the king. However, I felt like there was so much built up, and the story wasn't finished. I still have so many questions, and feels like it ended on a huge cliff hanger for an end book of a series. I also was like what the fuck with a society using demons as slaves. I felt like it was a total flip flop from the series and Demon Cycle before that.

This was a really enjoyable to read book. Love getting back into the world of the Demon cycle.

I did feel there was a disconnect for the "last book." So many unfinished stories, characters that we saw develop, have families, grow are just non-existent. With only 2.5 POVs (including the Demon King), while a cool world, it seemed like a spin off book vs the end of a trilogy.
