I read this book back in the 90s as part of a Political Science Graduate course. I loved it and it lead to my taking probably 20 hours of American Indian Law Courses - which before then I didn't know existed. Dr. Cummings started me on the path and I finished with Dr. Glenn Morris and his 4th World Center for Indigenous Law and Politics which I noticed just got a Facebook page probably this week. The things I learned from these guys sent me on a lifelong journey and awakened my passion and career path working with American Indians. My gratitude to them both. They know who and where they are. Lol.

Grinde and Johansen uncover a mostly forgotten layer of U.S. political history: how colonial and revolutionary leaders' interactions and consultations with the Iroquois and other Natives shaped their ideas of federated government and a free society. A bit of a dry read, but essential. Makes extensive use of primary source material.
