原籍山東濟南，穆斯林。1948年秋生於北京。
高中畢業後在內蒙古烏珠穆沁草原插隊，放牧四年。1975年畢業於北京大學考古學系。1981年畢業於中國社會科學院研究生院民族歷史語言系。歷史學碩士。曾就職於中國歷史博物館、中國社會科學院民族研究所、海軍政治部創作室、日本愛知大學、現為自由作家。
