York Literary Review is an annual creative writing anthology from York St John University, designed to showcase diverse work from talented writers.
“Inside these pages is a wide variety of exciting writing which explores all aspects of ‘Roots’. Roots are personal and different for everyone. What’s important is to embrace them and watch them grow.”
This is a lovely anthology, with all of the writing featuring the topic of roots, with each author/poet interpreting roots in their own way. There's a great range of writing styles, along with lovely formatting and illustrations throughout.
My favourite extract was from page 15:
Taking the train with my husband and his wheelchair By Zoe Davis
"Our gazes meet along the aisle. We travel separately now you have wheels. I wish we were closer but two pushchairs and imposing bags have become carers to the space I wish to occupy next to the toilet, confetti blooming from unlocked doors. A fellow passenger moves you out of the way. I consent to bite my tongue. You laugh in a foreign language. I need not explain the metaphor of a ramp. I am tired. Our eyes are touching in the way our hands once did. We smile, embrace irony, mouth the words 'I do'."
