Weathering Doves Harbor #2

Eye of the Hurricane

Rate this book
Katherine Graeves has her future mapped out. Land the PR job of her dreams with the South Carolina Sea Dragons, don’t get distracted, and always stay in control. But when a little white lie to appease her mother spirals out of control, Katherine suddenly needs a boyfriend to bring to her cousin’s wedding. Now she needs someone to play that part. The only person she can think to ask? Ares, the guy who’s been obsessed with her since his first day of college.

Ares Dawkins has never had a problem with painting or photography. It was always something that came naturally. Expressing emotion through his work? That was another story. What starts as a favor to a friend quickly turns into a spark neither of them can ignore.

The plan was always easy to stick to. But with Ares determined to show her how to let go and enjoy life, it’s becoming harder and harder to hold on to her sense of control. In the eye of the hurricane, where everything feels calm but nothing is truly safe—Ares and Katherine find themselves falling.

Eye of the Hurricane is a fake dating, small coastal town, found family, spicy romance filled with blushing and swooning.

4.75⭐️ - Thank you so much Jensen Kate for putting your trust in me yet again to be one of your ARC readers 🥺❤️‍🔥 this felt really special!

Where do I even begin with this ?
Well, first of all I guess my prediction was right! I LOVED EVERY SINGLE MINUTE OF IT 🥹
Were it not for the biological necessity that sleep is, I would have finished this in a single night!

As I’ve said in my pre-read comment, I am not much of a fluffy contemporary romance reader, I like my romances dark 👹
But ever since being an ARC reader for her previous book •After the Storm• I have been converted. Or at least I have been when it comes to her books 🥰
She has a way with words that makes them an undeniable automatic read for me.

The way she writes stories will leave you in a puddle. A puddle of tears, of joy, of sweat, and of wonder 🥺
Her characters are so incredibly well rounded, her relationships so full of depth, and the sense of longing and community she builds is so profound, there is truly no way for you not to connect with all of it ✨
She writes the most heartbreakingly beautiful relationships between her MCs, with a development so natural and authentic even though the story just started, that you feel like you’ve know them forever 🥺 They are some of my favorite friends to lovers stories ever.
She writes strong, independent, determined women, who love fiercely, support unconditionally, and demand respect unapologetically yet still lean into their softness ❤️‍🔥
She writes thoughtful, protective, emotionally mature and available men, who never shy away from being vulnerable, hold space for, take care of, and uplift their loved ones 🔥

The banter and tension are beyond exquisite 😮‍💨🤭 I was giggling, squealing and kicking my feet before I even finished the first chapter !!!

Ares is a cocky cinnamon roll of a man, king of consent with a dirty mouth & mind 🥵😮‍💨👹 and the gentlest most thoughtful soul.
Kat is an ambitious woman, with a heart of gold ready to drop anything at a moments notice to offer her help even if she’s never known much of that kindness herself 🥺
She might be swinging between running to and away from what she wants outside of work but that what Ares here for 😏 and let me tell you he delivers like his life depends on it 😮‍💨
The way he was willing to give her everything she needed but still made sure to slow his pace so she could enjoy this new fun side of her life was just heartwarming. The way he prioritized their friendship and her wellbeing above his own simple desires was refreshing. And the way he made consent sound even hotter than I ever thought it could be had me weak in the knee 🥵

The tension throughout the book was absolutely off the charts and the spicy scenes were truly 🧑‍🍳 💋

Finally, seeing all of the characters from After the Storm again brought me sooo much joy 🥹

So if you’re looking for a feel good, heartwarming, and deliciously spicy love story, I’m begging you : RUN AND GET THIS BOOK ❤️‍🔥 (and the previous one - they are interconnected standalones)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
✨ ARC Pre-read ✨
I had the honour of being an ARC reader for Jensen Kate’s previous book •After the Storm• which i absolutely ADORED, so this feels extra special !! ❤️‍🔥
Those who’ve been on here with me for a while know i don’t usually gravitate towards fluffier contemporary romances (i like them dark 👹), but she is an author for whom I’d gladly step out of my comfort zone, because her writing & stories are *chef’s kiss* 🔥
I’ll be back tomorrow with a review & in the meantime I will leave you with you with her delightful dedication 😮‍💨
To my fellow control freaks who wish you could give someone else the reins. I hope you find your Ares Dawkins.
Another banger written by Jensen Kate!! Wow, I was LOCKED IN for the entire 368 pages.
In the first book, I loved Ares! He was the comic relief, the guy in the girls group, and loyal to his core. In this?? He was prime book boyfriend material. Funny, cocky, thoughtful, a reformed playboy with eyes for only one woman. Simply put, a golden retriever MMC.
Kathrine! We didn’t get much of her in book one but I feel like it made getting to know her in this book even better. She is probably the most driven, determined and motivating FMC I’ve ever read. Granted, to a fault at times but so relatable that it drew me to her even more. She had a heartbreaking view on love and life, didn’t think love and her dream career could balance together, and because of that, deprived herself of it for most of her life.
Together? The best banter, tension, and fake dating. Ares was so determined to show her exactly what she deserved out of life, all the while handling each experience and her “firsts” with immense care. Her character growth was beyond beautiful to read and the relationships she made with Ares’ friends and family was a tear jerking found family vibe that I devoured page by page.
Characters from book one were seemlessly woven into this one and REALLY pulled at my heartstrings!😭♥️ I simply loved it all.
Jensen was kind enough to send me an eARC for this after I did some art for her. However I believe honesty is the best policy so here is my honest review:
Characters: The characters are all incredibly likeable. I was intrigued by Kat and Ares’s story after reading After the Storm and I’m so glad we got their book! I felt Kat was incredibly relatable. I don’t have parents like her but I am a people pleaser who is a control freak and I really felt her struggles. And Ares was the perfect contrast to her. I think they brought out the best in each other and it showed on the page every time they were together. The whole friend group is really cute and all of them are a fun dynamic. Adding Luna and Seb to the mix was nice. I still NEED Beck’s story.
The overall plot: similar to After the Storm, the plot is more about the characters’ growth throughout rather than a super complex dramatic story. It was definitely enjoyable and similar to what I said above, I really liked the way the characters grew with each other.
There were some bits of the story that felt a bit repetitive and I won’t go into huge detail to avoid spoilers but some points Kat did piss me off for how she was treating Ares, but overall it was a good time.
Some tropes:
- friends to lovers
- found family
- small town
- slight reverse grumpyxsunshine
Ratings:
Characters - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5
Spice - 🌶️🌶️🌶️/5
Plot - ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5
Writing - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
I’d recommend the book for anyone who wants a straightforward plot all about characters and their struggles. Looking forward to more from Jensen!
Eye of the Hurricane is a dual POV small town, fake-dating romance. Katherine has a plan for her life, and it doesn't include time for romance. She's got her eye on a PR job for a professional hockey team and knows that she has her work cut out for her as a woman in the sports world. When pressure from her mother leads to a little white lie that she's seeing someone, and then she suddenly has to produce said boyfriend, she turns to her friend Ares. Ares has had a thing for Katherine since he met her, and he's all too glad to step into the role of temporary fake-boyfriend, and hopefully to show Katherine how good they can be together in the meantime. After all, why shouldn't she get to pursue passion at work AND in love?
This was a fun small-town romance. I loved the friends-to-lovers and found family aspects of it. I liked Katherine's focus and determination to reach her goals, and to know her worth as her own person and not just as part of a couple. I loved Ares' patience and willingness to go at her pace, to offer support without taking over. And the interactions with friends and side characters were great. While it can be read as a stand-alone, I did occasionally feel like I was missing bits and pieces from not having read the first book in this series, so I'd recommend checking out After the Storm first.
4.5 rounded up
Firstly let me shout of Jensen for taking feedback of readers, apologizing and making the change. A lot of people struggle with any sort of constructive criticism and she was wonderful about it.
Next, another shout out to her for doing a recap of book 1 in case you want to skip it (they are standalone but interconnected)
Now to the story
This was just so good. I LOVE fake dating. Jensen executed it perfectly. I was hooked from their convo about hooking up.
“You want to… hook up?” Yes. “With me?” Clearly. “Tonight?” Not if you keep this up. He laughs but it comes out dry, like he’s in disbelief.
Kat is working in college sports PR while in school and her dream is to land a gig with a pro hockey league straight out of school. Ares is the more artistic of the two. Honestly Jensen had some hilarious quips in the story to the point I was cracking up.
“You looked too peaceful. Seeing men at peace doesn’t sit right with me.”
Nothing on this planet scares me more than a teenage girl who thinks some other girl has a crush on her mediocre boyfriend.
What you’ll get:
Friends to lovers
Dual POV
Found family
Small town
Fake Dating
College Students
Virgin FMC
He fell first
Thank you to Jensen for the ARC of this wonderful book.
He watches her like she hung the stars, every glance soft with a devotion she doesn’t even notice because her eyes are locked on the horizon, chasing a dream she refuses to let slip through her fingers.
This is my second time getting an ARC from Jensen Kate and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the story. I’m a sucker for a man who is pinning after a determined woman. Overall, this story showcased so many different emotions while providing a unique story line.
Katrina is a woman on a mission. So determined to prove everyone wrong. I ate that up 💋. She’s fierce, unstoppable, and so sure that her career is the only thing worth fighting for until she realizes she can have it all.
Ares is there in the quiet moments. Always showing up not matter what situation the two of them are in. He’s a loyal man who’s waiting for her to finally come to the realization that there’s no better match for her than him. Because her dreams matter more than his heartache AND he makes that a priority.
Overall, i genuinely loved the story. The spicy scenes were perfect. The plot, fantastic. The characters and their friend group, top notch. I give a huge round of applause for the author. You can tell how much work and effort she has put into her writing.
This was such a good, wholesome, loving read. The characters are both incredibly likeable and when they come together its like the stars aligned.
Kat... She is a strong, driven, fiercely independent woman who knows what she wants and is determined to get it, however she went without a healthy dose of fun and love from the ones who should have encouraged her the most. I kinda wish we got to see more of a EFF you moment to her mum.
Ares... This man is a lovable, sweet, kind, artistic golden Retriever with hearts in his eyes from the get go. He is so fiercely loyal and loving that he never took full control without giving Kat the control to him. I loved his attitude towards her and his defence for her was never a disappointment. He showed her how to be HER and still have the extras in life.
My sheeeeyyyllaaa
Another breathtaking romance story created by Jensen Kate. She doesn’t know how to stop creating bangers. 🥰
I love the character development with Kat throughout the book and her ambitions. Ares is such a puppy core and clearly smitten with Kat, eager for the fake dating to show her what they can be. Honestly? In parts of the book, she is a girl boss. It is refreshing that she focuses on her potential PR opportunity and career.
The plot was very nice and consistent. It can be a very pleasant single-sitting read. Certain parts do reference the first book in the series, so if you haven’t yet, please read it! In my opinion, the first book should be read first since it is the first introduction with Kat and Ares, along with some brief moments mentioned.
I genuinely liked it and can’t wait to buy a physical copy for my shelf.
Sweet, steamy, and dreamy! Eye of the Hurricane is the fake dating love story of Katherine and Ares. Ares has been in lust with Kat since the first time he saw her, but she is too focused on her career for dating. After all, it's hard being a woman in a male-dominated field like sports PR. When she lies to her garbage human mother about having a boyfriend to get her off her back, a plan must be made: Enter good friend Ares.
This book has so many cute tropes and themes: he falls first, hurt/healing, found family, experienced/inexperienced, and the fake dating baseline. This book is as much about finding a village as it is romance.
Thank you for including me as an ARC reader!
4/5 Stars - some of the language is repetitive, but overall, a great read
4/5 Steamy
4/5 Spicy - contains a few open door scenes, light bondage, and appropriate obtaining of consent (HOTTTT)
i'll say it once WE ALL NEED A MAN LIKE ARESSSS😍😍
"I just can’t imagine a world in which it’s not me and you at the end of it all.”😭😭😭😭
these Dawkins boys know how to treat women❤️ i love every little thing about Ares he's so understanding about Katherine with her job, her feelings, how she is as a person HES PERFECTION. he's so respectful in every shape and form
“We did it! We successfully turned him into a man written by a woman!” Jensen Kate knew what she was doing when trying Ares🤭🤭
A round of applause for Katherine to be able to wear heels and dress everyday and be comfortable🫶🫶 i will say she did annoy me a littleeee bit just bc Ares was being the most perfect man ever and respecting her wishing and she kept signing him out 😭 but i knew it was bc she never experienced this sort of love before
buttttt she's a BADASS her dream job being a woman in athletics WE NEED MORE WOMAN LIKE HER❤️❤️ i love seeing her standing up for herself and not letting anyone get in her head
GUYS THE SPICE WAS THEREEEEE omg this was so much spicer than the first book and I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT. Ares had me giggling with his words🤭🤭
This book had been fun, and sweet. Katherine had been strong, ambitious, and sometimes stubborn to the point of making me roll my eyes, but I still respected her drive and her fire. Ares had been the perfect balance to her, patient, supportive, and just so good that it almost felt unreal at times. Together they had amazing chemistry, the kind that made me smile and sigh at the same time. Definitely a story that made me happy to read. Thank you so much to the author for giving me the opportunity to read the book in advance, I received this for free and I'm leaving an honest review.
Fake dating + he falls first = obsessed
Ares and Katherine were such a great match, and the fake dating trope was done so well. I loved that Ares fell first—he was so genuine and steady, and the way he helped Katherine loosen up and really start living was beautiful to watch. Their connection felt real, the banter was fun, and the emotional moments hit hard.
Jensen Kate never disappoints. Her characters always pull me in, and this one was no different. Can’t wait to see whose story we get next!
OMG!! This book was good read this book all in one day. It was romantic, charming, and funny. I love the dual POVs which I think a lot of books should have more of. There was one character that really hated and wanted to punch in the face and that was Kat’s mom. I highly recommend if anyone likes all things romance, spice, punching people in the face and friends to lovers troupe.
Jensen is an author you want to keep an eye on. She has a special way of writing that immediately immerses you into the story. I loved the first book so much, but this one just didn't jive with me. The personalities of the characters just weren't for me, and I wasn't a fan of the sequence of their love story. The spice in this book was next level, though, and I was all about it! I think this story will hit the mark.
K and A are freaking goals, even when they haven't officially gotten together. K is a woman who is so dead set on attaining her dreams, in direct opposition with her family that, to a point, her soul has been crushed by those first entrusted with protecting her. She has no time in life for anything but her dream, until a situation forces her to entertain what she has always shied away from.
A is struck by K from the very first meeting. His interest is never hidden, yet he respects her enough to be her friend and only a friend. A truly sees her, even what she tries so desperately to hide from the world. He believes in her & is willing to not only stand by her, but support her even when she's not a willing participant to his support.
Their story is by no means traditional but it is such a heart warming, heart tugging book that made literal tears fall in multiple places.
Here we follow Katherine (kitty kat, kat) she has had a plan for her future since she was a little girl. Nothing will stand in her way as she looks at a PR position in a professional hockey team setting and she’s worried that her being a female in a male dominated world any distraction- including romance and fun or a life outside of work in general- will cost her everything. That is until she tells her mother a little harmless lie that she is in a relationship to prove she can do both. A family wedding brings her mother into town and now she has to produce said ‘boyfriend’ and who does she turn to but none other than her friend.
Insert Ares Dawkins, the lovable, patient, understanding, artistic golden retriever who has had eyes for Kat since freshman year. He shows her how to have fun and to live in the moment while still having control and trusting him as well. Ares is the perfect contrast to her.
I was given the opportunity to read this book as an ARC, and I loved it just as much as the first one.
Ares has liked Katherine since he first saw her but she has always had a plan and intends to stick to it. Throughout this book, you see Ares break down her walls, Katherine opening up, so much found family, and more.
"Eye of the Hurricane" will be available on September 12th, and I highly recommend you pick this book up!
Fake dating is such a fun trope, and you know that it's going to fail in all the best ways when real feeling are caught - especially when one half of the fake dating was never faking it to start with. Ares is a man who knows what he wants, and boy is he down bad for Kat! He was in love at first sight (basically) and I love how much of a golden retriever he is. Katherine is dedicated to her goals and is working so hard to achieve her dream job in sports and prove her mom wrong!
I loved seeing the character growth that was gradual throughout the story, and seeing love bloom before your eyes. I'm so glad I got to come back to Doves Harbor, and I already can't wait for book 03!
I received this book as an ARC and this review is my opinion.
I was very excited for these characters and this book. I left book one of this interconnected stand alone series really disliking Ares for how he treated the FMC of that book and I didn't like his attitude.
This book really allowed for the nuances of him to be shown and I was glad to get to the point where I liked him. His care and patience for his FMC, Katherine, was perfect. He supported her character arc for this book - her book - very well. I loved how she navigated through and how Ares being present allowed her to gain true confidence and not just the confidence she was trying to project.
I really really enjoyed this book. And I am anxious to get my hands on book 3!
College friends to lovers, fake dating, kind of smex lessons, found family…yes, please! I loved the characters in After the Storm, so I really loved getting to know them even better as Katherine and Ares’ relationship changed and grew. It was a bit of a slow burn, which is to be expected, but I really enjoyed the spice once it happened. I loved seeing Katherine’s inner strength also grow and change and Ares’ support of her in all things. So great, and I can’t wait for more!!!
Eye of the Hurricane is a small town, Friends to lovers, fake date romance. The story is about Katherine and Ares who are both likable and relatable main characters. Katherine and Ares are friends. So when the pressure from her mother to produce a boyfriend Katherine turns to Ares. Like all fake date romance Ares as always has a thing for Katherine since they met and sees these as his chance to show her that they belong together.
This was fun well written story. The pace of the story was good it didn’t see like a slow burn or fast pace. The flow was the good to. Katherine and Ares’s group of friends were great to. They added to the story to make it better. The spicy scenes were well done. They weren’t over the top or cheesy.
Overall, Eye of the Hurricane was good well written story. The main characters were both likable and relatable. They have great chemistry from the start. This story will hold you attention from the beginning all the way to the end.
Ares and Kat are the definition of opposites attract. The way Ares grounds her throughout the story was so sweet. I lived that we got to see more of Audra and Roman’s story as well. The found family vibes in this series are everything, and I’m dying to know who the next MC’s will be.
I LOVED to see this side of the story. I loved Roman in the first book that man could do no wrong imo, but Ares didn't have me sold. I wasn't really sure about Katrina either, but seeing them together makes so much sense. I hope this series continues and we get some more resolution for Beck. There have been hints, but I am hoping that the story for him is soon. Overall amazing book and I loved all the characters and the chemistry was so good and so worth the wait.
This is book 2 of the Weathering Doves Harbour series. I haven’t read book 1, & although this book does refer to things that happened in book 1, it doesn’t take away from the plot. Being a female in a male led industry, Katherine is extremely focused on her career. So much so she schedules her fun. But when her traditionalist mother tells her she needs to give up her career to find a husband, she tells her she has a boyfriend (she doesn’t!). Her mother then demands her boyfriend attend her sister’s wedding. Enter her friend, Ares. Ares has been taken by Katherine ever since he met her, so he’s more than happy to fake date her. But, despite the rules, the lines blur whilst they’re sheltering from the storm, & Katherine struggles to allow herself to have both her career & her blossoming relationship. This is a small coastal town, fwb to lovers romance with open door spice that has you giggling & cheering the characters on.
Katrina’s story truly resonated with me. She’s driven, determined to graduate and build the career she’s always dreamed of, all while trying to prove her worth to those who doubted her. Her strength is admirable, even when it feels like she’s carrying too much on her own.
Enter Ares, the art major who’s been quietly captivated by Katrina since day one. When she needs a fake wedding date, he steps in, and suddenly, his spark returns. Their banter is witty and fun, and watching Ares slowly break down Katrina’s walls is incredibly satisfying.
This book beautifully captures the pressure many women feel to be perfect in the eyes of those who should love them unconditionally. It’s a powerful reminder to stay true to yourself, chase your goals, and never sacrifice happiness to meet someone else’s expectations.
I wasn’t convinced that EOTH could top After the Storm.
By the end, it 100% did. Eye of the Hurricane speaks to the girls who feel they will never be enough and reminds them that one day the right person will make them feel whole. Jensen Kate has a gift for words that leave you both moved and seen. She never fails to amaze me, and this book is a beautiful reminder that love can heal in ways we least expect.
And let me just say, the spice is spicyyyyy. The tension and passion leap off the page and make the emotional payoff even stronger.
Thank you Jensen for the ARC. It’s an honor.
