A mysterious tree, an incurable disease, a troll, a zombie, an immortal, an assassin, a giant earthworm, a missing girl, and one dead cat.

Nobody said being a superhero was going to be easy...

Duncan has a list. It is a complete rundown of all the things he hates most in the world; and like many fifteen-year-old boys, he hates a lot. He hates that he can’t get the girl he wants. He hates that he isn’t good enough at football to be picked for the team. And he hates Carl, the school bully, who feels pretty much the same way about him.

But Duncan is about to make a discovery that will allow him to get whatever he wants. The problem is, he isn't the only one.

Roots is a horror fantasy science fiction psychological thriller mystery romantic comedy superhero origin story for young adults, from Kevin Outlaw, author of The Legend Riders trilogy.

have been eagerly awaiting this new book by Mr. Outlaw, and he did not let me down.

At one time or another in our teenage years, we all wished for something to be better, or different. We had a list of things we hated. This is a story of what happens if you find out you can change things. What does the teenage heart want most? What does the adult heart want most? As you read this, you probably think something to yourself that is nice, easy, painless. Have you thought about the consequences of your wish? What happens when that wish comes true, and it affects everyone around you in ways you never imagined?

Nothing ever comes for free.

As the story unfolded, I started with sympathy for the characters, then suspense builds and effects of a single wish start to ripple out affecting other characters. I felt what the characters felt, their sorrow, their frustration, their fear. There is darkness, there is fear, there is suspense. And yes, as promised, there is a zombie, an assassin, an immortal, a mysterious tree, an incurable illness, a giant earthworm, a missing girl and a dead cat. The way they are all woven together is magic and makes for a very entertaining read.

I absolutely enjoyed this book. While it's billed as "young adult", this is a great read for adults as well. Because we also make wishes, and don't think about the consequences or how, if our wish comes true, it might affect everyone around us.

The roots are deep, the grow far and wide.. Be careful what you wish for.
