A Medieval Dark Fantasy sequel for fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Jane Austen’s Emma, Ella Enchanted, and My Lady Jane.

Throned but far from safe, Lilac Trécesson must honor her deal with Kestrel, the faerie king of the Court of the Valley. When a monstrous envoy arrives instead, she’s thrust into a deadly hunt for an arcane chest carried by the Midraal Market. With the help of several unexpected allies, they embark on a journey that sinks her into even deeper entanglement with the vampire forced to make an impossible choice when their mission turns to tragedy.

As neighboring forces threaten her crown and an emperor offers marriage in exchange for protection, Lilac finds herself torn between duty, her heart’s deepest desires, and the thing she’s slowly becoming. But it is Garin, her cursed and sworn protector, whose devotion turns obsessive—and deadly. The threat of her overthrow is infuriating, yet nothing devastates him more than the thought of losing Lilac to the emperor who would inevitably fall victim to his wrath if he dared lay a finger on her.

She’s his queen.
His beloved.
His thrall.
And he would raze empires to keep her.

Brianna Sugalski (currently published as Briar Somerset) is a Romantic Dark Fantasy author with a soft spot for spite-driven, pastry-loving FMCs, regrettably obsessive and bloodthirsty love interests, and well-fought-for Happily Ever After Alls.

In all facets of her craft, she prefers exploring the ominous—disenchanting, if you will—undertones of history, romance, and the arcane.

Note:
I wanted to share a small but meaningful change in my author journey. From this point forward, I’ll be publishing under the pen name "Briar Somerset": https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

This transition will be completely transparent and I plan for it to take place gradually, starting with my social media platforms and website. Then, onto my sequel book cover. Not to fret; Lilac and Garin remain stubbornly unchanged—still venomous, self-repulsed, and clawing their way through darkness toward each other.
Book one, Disenchanted, will remain available under “Brianna Sugalski,” a nod to where this journey began. From Disillusioned (#2) onward, the Ruinous Reign series will be published under my pseudonym.

✨Disillusioned✨

Author: Briar Somerset
Release: August 12
Series: A Lay of Ruinous Reign, book 2

Holy moly. This book was INTENSE. Briar sure knows how to release chaos and create a MMC that is so morally grey, I wasn’t sure if we were still enemies to lovers or not 😂😂.

We begin book two right where we left off, finding ourselves once more in an alternate state of medieval Brittany and France where humans and supernatural creatures inhabit the lands. The stakes are high. The tension between our Lilac and Garin are even higher. War is on the horizon and the only way to keep it at bay is an arranged marriage with an Emperor. Meddling faeries create havoc. Court politics bring heartache. A thrall bond. Everything pushes against Lilac, her rule, and her love for Garin. But she’s not one to back down.

I found myself so intrigued by Garin and Lilac’s relationship. It was rough and deep and Garin is truly a vampire. It hurt. A lot. But there were also so many moments that were utterly beautiful. I’m so curious how they will continue to grow together.

Tropes you may find in Disillusioned are blood play, medium spice, arranged marriage, vampires and supernatural creatures, 🔥 the world for her, he has lots of red flags but they’re worth it, touch her and 💀, he’s an obsessed and incredibly possessive morally grey mmc, found family, and banter.

Book one, Disenchanted is out now!

I really enjoyed reading Disillusioned, it was a strong sequel in the A Lay of Ruinous Reign series and had that charm that I was wanting. The concept worked overall and had that dark fantasy romance that I was looking for. It continued the storyline perfectly and was engaged with the characters that was going on. Briar Somerset Briar Somerset has a strong writing style and am excited to read more in this world and from Briar Somerset.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I was a volunteer ARC reader.

Author: Briar Somerset
Release: August 12
Series: A Lay of Ruinous Reign, book 2

I thoroughly have enjoyed the story and the setting of these books- the fact that it is a brilliant blend of a historical fiction/ romance but also fantasy is just the perfect cup of tea (of coffee- whatever beverage brings you joy)

This book kicks off quick where our first left us. We get to watch Lilac grow and develop- not only as a queen but as something more.

Lilac finds herself utterly lacking knowledge for ruling- a fault of her upbringing and imprisionment of her own home throughout her youth. She is set up for failure, yet refuses to yield.

Her country is on the cusp of war, and Lilac needs to secure her thrown. By breaking the norms Lilac find allies in places the thrown has never had before; Vampires, Witches, Warlocks, and Family.

The relationship between Lilac and Garin is what I would refer to as feral passion. In this book as their relationship shifts and changes there are more than just feelings in the mix. Garin's hunger and obession take a dark turn, though his heart is in the right place.

I absolutely loved the first in this series. I had to read and reread the last quarter of this book about 3 times. I felt that the ending was chaotic. There was so much happening seemingly all at once, that it was hard to follow (I read the before edits and after edits of the book).

If you enjoy vampires, historical fictions, and dark romance this series is for you.

I’m so glad to have gotten the next installment in Garin and Lilac’s story! These two are such cute, morbid little idiots (I love them lmao)

So much happened in this book, in a way that made it feel like I was watching a DnD game unfold. No, I’ve never played, so don’t make fun of me if I’m wrong lol
The royalty & political aspects kept the stakes high throughout, and the romantic dynamic kept me on my toes with their chaotic af temperaments.

I can’t wait to get the NEXT book because that cliffhanger was insane 🥵🤌🏻

A generous offering of amorous madness, fascinating supernatural dynamics, and political schemes.
Now put all that in a delicate platter to take for a stroll in the dark forest, barefoot while being chased by a monster – is the best way to describe my mental and emotional state while consuming this literary chef-d'oeuvre.

While this book is a perfect balance of all its working elements and world expansion, Lilac and Garin’s evolution into the people they are meant to be and as a powerful unit together, lays at the forefront of all the things that amazed me. Because oh my! Even if we were left with a little bit of assurance of their sincere bond at the end of Disenchanted, Briar did not hold back when it came to unspooling the threads of their individual psyche. For Lilac, it is the mental strife of being pushed into power to protect her people and keep at bay the tension between creatures and humans, her continued yearning for normalcy beyond her once isolated life, the crown, a forced betrothment, and the acceptance of her darker, more uninhibited parts so she can meet Garin where he is. For him, it is his long-standing motives of vengeance, contending with and pacifying his true sinister nature (he is a vampire after all. A hot one to boot!), and most of all, his unmitigated devotion for Lilac in spite of all these “shortcomings”.

His POV is the icing on the cake, abridging his lifelong struggles of both self and circumstance in the voice of a hopeless and lovesick immortal who lived too long but only just found meaning to his existence. Together they trudge a new path of dissent against a corrupt kingdom while protecting each other in true “scorched earth” fashion. Their chemistry is kindled by their feebleness to deny their connection, no matter their individual magic and strength to fight it. In theory, they could reject their love by mere logic alone but how could they? Their yearning for each other is lightning charged, earnest yet frenzied, and this is only equaled by their sassy banter, which to be honest is such a comedic relief when tensions are high.

I enjoyed reacquainting myself with returning characters like Bastion, who is hot albeit still conniving, as well as new names and faces that usher the plot for the next installment.

I did not consider this a lie-back-on-your-recliner-with-paced-breaths kind of read because I was quite stressed each time Lilac or Garin is on the verge of a decision. Will he or will he not succumb to his dark tendencies and ruin everything? Will she just choose the good for all at the expense of her heart? The threat of “one wrong turn” always looms and Briar is so masterful at keeping us on our toes. I cannot wait for the next book

Ok first of all can I complain about the length of the second book? 800+ pages excuse me! And yet it sucked me back in immediately. Picking up with Queen Lilac's first actions and Garin's acts of revenge, this book gets darker than the first. It shows the darker side of this vampire's obsession with his queen, and his inner battle between wanting her completely and wanting what (he thinks) is best for her/her kingdom.

This book was LONG. Especially since so much of it felt drawn out with not enough plot development for my tastes, with all the repeated madness that occurred. There was so much madness and obsession and new fun characters with secrets and connections. But I wanted more of the story - you know, the queen being a queen! Such as the meetings with all creatures to form agreements and new laws to make all her subjects safe (not just the humans), and the repayment of the bargain with the Fae King (which started and then kind of stalled out). For the most part, this book focused on the obsessive and dark and very spicy relationship between the vampire and the queen. Lilac just wants to forget she is the queen sometimes and just runs off leaving her duties. The ending was pure chaos, and unlike the first book, left so much open for the next installment to continue.

I did enjoy the changes in POV and getting to see all of Garin's obsessive yearning.

I will leave you with this Garin quote:

"I taste you on the wind... It is gut-wrenching how sinfully I crave you. Your laughter is the sound of cathedral bells - the scent of your hair, the warning through the high windows. Your body, the pulpit. All I want to do is kneel, and repent, and drink of your wine, and sin, and sin again, until there is little left of the monster I've become."

He's dark and obsessive and a bit delicious and the queen is into all of it. She's just as dark and twisted herself, rebelling against everyone after being locked away for so many of her formative years. Is she twisted because of their bond, or was she already that twisted and was finally able to act on it?

I will add that I read this 800+ book in 10 days. 10 days! But it didn't satisfy like the first book did, which is why the first book I rated higher. A solid 3.5 stars though.

Darker and more intense than expected, but solid overall. (ARC REVIEW)

I went into Disillusioned thinking I’d get a fun mix of dark romantasy with a little bite and a little banter. And while it definitely delivered on the dark part, it was far heavier and more intense than I expected. This is the second book in the A Lay of Ruinous Reign series, and it wastes no time throwing you into Lilac Trécesson’s tangled, dangerous world.

She’s a newly crowned queen trying to keep her throne, caught in deadly bargains with fae courts, navigating political proposals from an emperor she doesn’t trust, and constantly shadowed by Garin, her cursed protector whose loyalty has started to curdle into something more obsessive.

What really surprised me here was how unflinchingly dark the story goes. There’s blood, betrayal, morally gray choices, and a growing sense that Lilac herself is changing in ways that might not be entirely human anymore.

The romance subplot isn’t light or fluffy; it’s complicated, possessive, and often unsettling, which fits the tone of the book but might not be what every romantasy reader is looking for. I also appreciated how the worldbuilding deepened. Fae politics, monstrous envoys, cursed chests, and all that good, eerie stuff, but it sometimes made the pacing feel uneven.

There were moments of breathless tension followed by long stretches of exposition, and I occasionally found myself wishing it would just get on with it.

That said, the emotional stakes were high, and the last act definitely delivers in terms of drama and payoff. I just didn’t love it as much as I hoped to. I admired it more than I was swept away by it. It’s well-written, immersive, and has some genuinely gripping moments, but it’s also heavier and darker than my personal preference for this kind of fantasy-romance. But then again, it's my personal perspective only.

I’m landing at 3.5 stars out of 5. It’s a good sequel that pushes its characters and world forward in bold ways, and I’d still recommend it to fans of darker romantasy who like their stories messy, intense, and morally complicated. Just don’t go in expecting a lighthearted fairytale vibe, this one’s got teeth.

After reading part two, Lilac was about to become queen. She still went through so much in this second part. A lot of people were still against her being Queen. Her mother still didn't respect her as much when it came to her position or decisions. Garin and Lilac's love gets put to the test. Lilac has to get married to a noble or any man who matches her status . Poor Garin didn't think he was worthy of Lilac. Garin is the most people who didn't want in the kingdom, but he is Lilac's biggest supporter in everything she does. It was a forbidden romance to begin with, but they were meant for each. Besides their sexual encounters around each other, they are madly in love with each other. Sometime in the story, Lilac almost dies and Garin saves her by giving his blood. They gained a blood bond, where they became closer where Garin decides he should separate from Lilac for her own good. I get why he did it, I don't think the blood oath has changed their feelings for each other, that was already there. Garin beat himself up so much. Garin needed reassurance. Lilac did become a little more reckless, she almost killed a man. She almost died. She puts herself in more danger than she did in the first story. Lilac was willing to do anything to become a good queen to her people of France. She was willing to survive so much but she couldn't live without Garin. No matter how far apart they spend, they cannot be without each other. Sinclair and his mother finally got what they deserved. I won't go into detail about it , but know that Garin gets his revenge. There was so much craziness in the story but I'm glad for whatever happened. Lilac has become a stronger character than she was in the beginning. She has proved she can be the queen they are looking for. If you enjoyed stories with strong feminism, vampire and human romance, family drama, murder, different paranormal beings, justice, and world battles. If you are also looking for extra spicy in the book, then you will want to read this book, my key words for you are make sure you read the masked ball scene.

This long-awaited sequel was well worth the wait!

The story picks up where we left things in the first instalment: Lilac has returned to the castle and is getting ready for her coronation. There's one caveat: she's still very impopular among her people, and there's a war knocking at the border. The easiest solution: entering an arranged marriage with a faraway emperor. But Lilac doesn't want to get married, at least not when she's being forced. To add more mess to the 💩 pile, Garin accidentally creates a thrall bond with Lilac.
The drama, the chaos, the mayhem, the humour... I loved all of it.

Lilac is growing: emotionally and as a ruler. She's stubborn, but her heart is in a good place. And she's definitely better than me because some of the things that come to light about some characters 👀 🐸🧋
Garin: My favourite messy vampire. I absolutely loved the chapters from his point of view. The yearning is 10/10, with no notes.
What I like about their dynamic is that Garin's a control freak, and he wants to orchestrate every situation to perfection, all according to his plan. Then hurricane Lilac comes through who just wants the world to respect her autonomy for once.
In book 1, Lilac was literally lost in this new world and needed Garin to stay alive. In this part of the story, we start to see a shift where Garin has to come to terms with the fact that he might need Lilac more than he would like to admit.

What I'm hoping to see in the next books (this was book 2 out of 5) is for Lilac and Garin to have honesty about how they truly feel about eachother and for Garin to include Lilac in his plans. It would spare him a whole lot of headaches 😆

TLDR: This was brilliant, and the only thing that would make it better is narrations. I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the audiobook ✨️

{3.25/5}

CW: spice, violence, gore, death, referenced attempted rape/SA, some others

Thank you to the author for the ARC! “Disillusioned” is available now!

I’m beginning to think that this romance is just stylistically not for me.

Lilac has returned to claim her crown, but life is far from settled. Kestrel’s deal looms overhead, France threatens along the border, and Garin’s attention becomes increasingly obsessive.

Oh how I wanted to enjoy this one. Unfortunately, I encountered the same issues as I experienced with book 1. The story and the magic and every other aspect of this book was enjoyable. Maybe a little redundant or irritating when it comes to the marriage aspect, but that’s par for the course when it comes to my personal opinions on that sort of thing. But the romance? It’s so incredibly toxic and obsessive and I hated it.

I’m guessing that the overtones of the romantic aspect are intentional, and there are certainly going to be readers who enjoy it. I am not one of them. I don’t want my main relationship structure to be something that makes me scream “my god why would you ever take this further.” I don’t want to question whether or not the MCs actually like each other, and I don’t want to see either of them frequently abuse their magical abilities to force the other into doing things that would change the course of their life. It’s abusive, or at least it reads that way to me, and this book doesn’t pull it off well enough for me to overlook the red flags like I typically would (because fiction is different than real life).

The rest of the story is actually fantastic, and I wish so desperately I could get around the romance to fully enjoy it. The plot is really interesting, the secondary characters and magic are wonderful, and I loved watching everything else unfold. I just don’t know if I can get through another 700+ pages where a significant portion of the storyline and motivation are focused on the most frustrating descent into lust-motivated madness.

Reading time: 10hrs 40mins
** This was originally an Arc read for me however, I ended up not being able to read it in time due to the world's biggest reading slump so I am only now getting the chance to catch up!

Disclaimer: I am not a big open-door romance type of person, so I had to skip/ skim over details to ensure I didn't miss big ones, while also remaining comfortable. So this review will be purely a continuation of the last, with added details of the story as well as the characters.

So I really liked the book! It was definitely longer than the last but I devoured it nonetheless. I was excited to see that the story was a direct continuation of the last. I was also really glad to see a lot more of the political side as Lilac has many more responsibilities. I feel like this book had a message of women empowerment as Lilac found her will and voice.
As well as the continued world-building that was in this book. It was so interesting to learn about all of the magic and the lore of vampires that was put into it. Understanding the thrall bonds or the other versions of vampires or warlocks and fairies while always maintaining a form of mystery as things didnt always go as they were supposed to. Garin's level of yearning is so crazy, it was really great to get more of his own perspective and thoughts throughout the book.

By the end of the bok my jaw was dropped because of the amount of unknown there is, not plot holes just not knowing what is to happen to our characters next. It is something I am really looking forward to. I can't wait to read the next book when its out! I would definitely recommend this entire series to anyone with a love of romantasy, great world-building and the battle between love and duty.

Disillusioned is a true sequel to its predecessor, Disenchanted. It gave me everything I craved for and more: more action, more whirlwind forbidden romance, more political intrigue. More of Brittany and more of Brocéliande.

Lilac is the queen now. Tossed into a role nobody prepared her for, and placed at the heart of a precarious political climate teetering on the verge of war. Could marrying Emperor Maximilian solve all her problems? Maybe. But would her heart be up to it? Never.

Her heart has one home, and that is Garin. Garin, oh, Garin. My strong yet broken vampire. Torn between his feelings for Lilac and his need to keep her and Brittany safe. He doesn't shy away from expressing his opinions, even when they cut deep. You could literally see his inner turmoil and witness the explosion of all his mixed emotions. And it was an explosion of epic proportions.

Lilac and Garin carry the plot, but they are not alone in it. The side characters aren't just there for the background noise; they truly contribute and bring so much to the table. And that was one of my favorite parts of the story, the way Briar made them all important and multi-layered.

And the ending... Wow, that ending! It felt like the rollercoaster of a lifetime, constantly keeping me on my toes. With some old and some new threats, old and new allies, old and new dangers, the path Lilac and Garin are to take is filled with uncertainties. But honestly, I am so eager to accompany them and see where the road takes us.

Thank you, Briar, for having me on the team and allowing me to witness this story unfolding.

Disillusioned is a dazzling romp through an alternate 16th-century Brittany, where magic and politics are as tangled as a courtier’s lies. The story follows Lilac, a fierce and headstrong protagonist, who’s not just a pretty face in a wedding gown—she’s a woman ready to take on the world, even if it means dealing with a few insufferable vampires and their petty power plays.
Key Characters:
• Lilac Trécesson: Our sassy heroine who’s juggling royal expectations and her own desires. She’s got the wit to match her beauty and isn’t afraid to throw a few verbal jabs when the situation demands it.
• Garin: The brooding vampire with a penchant for sarcasm. He’s equal parts charm and annoyance, often pushing Lilac’s buttons just to see her fiery reactions. Their chemistry? Electric.
• Bastion: Garin’s brother, who brings a mix of humor and tension to the mix. He’s not just a pretty face; he’s got his own agenda, and you can bet it’s going to complicate things for Lilac and Garin.
Story Highlights:
• The political intrigue is juicy, with Lilac caught between her duty to her kingdom and her desire for freedom. Cue the drama!
• The dialogue crackles with sass, especially when Lilac and Garin engage in their witty banter. You’ll find yourself laughing out loud at their exchanges.
• Magic is a double-edged sword, and as Lilac navigates her way through alliances and betrayals, the stakes keep rising, making for a page-turner you won’t want to put down.
Overall, Disillusioned is a delightful blend of sass, intrigue, and fantasy that keeps you on your toes. If you love strong heroines who can hold their own against brooding love interests, this book is your next obsession!

3.5 // 5 stars

This was quite the book with SO much information in it — definitely a new level compared to the authors first book, Disenchanted.

The overall story and writing was really good, but I felt there was so much repetition — whether it was the storyline or the conversations between the characters — that I felt it was hard to stay hooked and want to keep reading.
I received an ARC version of this and am so grateful for the opportunity to be able to dive into the second book.

The story ends on a major cliff hanger, so I’m going to assume there is a third book and I am definitely excited about that and will continue reading! The author has a unique voice and gives her characters (main or side) strong personalities and important roles. I love learning more and more about each one, which this story delves deeper into — showing past memories, as well as allowing the characters to tell their stories. I loved how Somerset built so many plot twists that connect characters we never would have assumed are related. The way my jaw dropped multiple times, I’d be rich!

The first book focused on Lilac and Garin, a lot! But book two gave more light to a lot of characters that were just briefly touched on in book one. It was so great knowing them on deeper levels and getting to see them as more main characters versus just characters that helped briefly.

There’s a lot of unanswered questions that I am just waiting to find answers to, so I’m very much looking forward to the next book!

Thank you, Somerset, for selecting me to be an ARC reader, I’m so grateful and lucky to have gotten to read your words.

Okay, full confession: I didn’t read the first book in this series (whoops), but that did not stop Disillusioned from throwing me headfirst into a swirl of emotions, drama, tension, and romantic chaos—and I loved every twisty, heart-squeezing second of it.

Briar Somerset knows how to bring the heat and the heartbreak. From the first few pages, I was completely hooked by the emotional intensity between the characters. Even though I didn’t have all the backstory, I felt it in every glance, every misunderstanding, every soft moment between storms. And let me tell you—there were storms.

The characters are messy in the best way. Flawed, real, and full of unresolved feelings that practically leap off the page. I kept turning pages like I was trying to get answers at a family reunion I wasn’t invited to—but by the end, I was fully invested. It was a rollercoaster, yes, but a beautifully built one, with the kind of emotional highs and lows that leave you breathless.

There were definitely moments where I wished I had the context from the first book (note to self: go back and read it!), but honestly, that didn’t take away from the experience—it just made me want more. More answers, more backstory, and definitely more of these characters.

If you’re into stories with raw emotion, romantic tension, and characters who make you want to simultaneously hug them and yell at them—Disillusioned is your kind of book. Just… maybe buckle up before you dive in.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Oh man. This one was interesting. I liked the premise of the story but I felt like the middle meandered around too much. There was just too much back and forth about the same things constantly throughout. I constantly had this push and pull between really liking it and being really bored by it. At over 700 pages it just kind of felt like a slog to get through at the end of the day.

I think the saying that didn't work for me in this one was (apart from pacing) the relationship dynamic between our FMC and MMC. After while it was just like what the hell does he actually want? And why does she keep letting him treat her like this? And why are we arguing about the same thing for the fifth time?

Around 75% through, the plot gained its traction again but we still had a lot of that weird arguing for what felt like no reason. Especially with the way that the book ended. The very last sentence is something we knew as soon as the novel started, but it took us over 800 pages of arguing to land back on the same point we'd all been waiting for. I don't know, it just didn't work for me.

The spice was good though. Unfortunately not good enough to make up for the rest of it, but the spicy seems were some of the better ones that I've read.

Overall I think it's a 3.5 and I am rounding down. There is more dead weight with this one then I cared for but I wanted to push through all the same.

Book 1 set up real stakes and made me expect political intrigue, external threats, and meaningful consequences. That promise is largely abandoned in book 2.

The so-called political conflict boils down to a vague threat of invasion (essentially “France might invade”) and repeated discussions about marriage as a solution. The FC spends most of the book resisting marriage in principle, only to circle back and accept it anyway because the emperor can “save” her kingdom. This conflict never truly evolves and serves more as a backdrop than an active plot.

Instead, the book is dominated by repetitive romantic obsession. The MC is intensely possessive and fixated on the FC, while the FC enjoys being the object of that obsession with very little agency or survival instinct of her own. Their dynamic loops endlessly without meaningful development or escalation.

Several potentially interesting elements introduced early are sidelined or forgotten for long stretches, making the story feel padded and stagnant. The book could have been significantly shorter and far more effective with tighter editing and clearer narrative direction.

Book 1 earned my interest. Book 2 unfortunately didn’t justify its length or its promises.

This second book in the Ruinous Rein series picks up right where Disenchanted left off, and it does not miss a beat. Lilac is once again facing the royal horror of marriage (yikes), but this time to save her kingdom, and things only get more intense from there.
The blend of fantasy, historical vibes, romance, and that deliciously dark supernatural twist is Chef’s kiss. The world-building in this series is rich. The character development is fantastic, with new characters, some instant favorites, and others... not so much.

Compared to the slower build of the first book, this one is intense, and I loved every second of it. The slow burn has completely ignited. The tension is gone, replaced by a very intense, all-consuming passion. The emotional stakes are higher than ever, and the spice is off the charts. Lilac and Garin are absolutely feral for each other.

Obsessed. Unhinged. Delicious!

Now let’s talk about Garin. My fave morally grey comfort character (yeah, ok, I’m a bit obsessed). His POVs are everything. There is a darker side to him, a more desperate and somehow even more devoted. Watching the story unravel through his eyes is like reading a gothic love poem with oh so many sarcastic and funny quips, written by someone who hasn’t slept in days and is completely lovestruck. It's adorable! He’s a mess. A mess with excellent cheekbones and a sharp jawline, with even sharper fangs.

This book is sexy, dark, dramatic, emotional, and entertaining. I laughed. I swooned. I yelled at the pages. And that cliffhanger? Oh, so dramatic!

Bring on book three.

✨ Arc Review ✨
I really enjoyed the book, I love vampires so it was really a must for me to read this. However this book overwhelmed me too much because of the size of it. I felt like for the story it tells it didn’t need to be this big, some parts could be easily erased. I liked the dynamic of it, being in the times of kings and queen, having a queen standing up for the minority of her people because she was also casted aside for being different and it was also good that the Mmc was 100% obsessed with her. My thing is that I felt the plot was dragged and most of the time she thought more for herself than for her people, their problems could’ve been solved way earlier than they did if she had her mind set on the right thing at the right time. Overall it was a good book and I’ll need to read more of this author. If you enjoy vampires, historical fiction this is definitely the book for you.

So much nothing...

This story meanders through its plot points in a way that isn't compelling. Events are picked up and dropped and forgotten until they're relevant again with little rhyme or reason, and we're expected to keep up when something from chapter 5 is relevant in chapter 34 without mention in between them (not literally those chapters, just an example).
There are so many good ideas in this story and characters I like that aren't the MCs. I can't stand the MCs. Pig headed and selfish, both of them. They don't listen to each other until its too late over and over again. All they seem to do is fight and argue, but somehow they're supposed to be in love? They're certainly in lust. Half the spicy scenes could have been cut out and it still would have been plenty spicy enough, and the story wouldn't have dragged over 700 pages. If the series continues I won't be continuing it.

There’s something intoxicating about Briar Somerset’s world Disillusioned doesn’t just continue the story; it sharpens it, deepens it, and makes it bite (sometimes literally).

Lilac Trécesson is one of the most compelling queens I’ve read in a while torn between power, love, and the dangerous weight of duty. And then there’s Garin. Cursed, devoted, obsessive… he’s everything you want in a dark romantasy protector and everything you fear.

Somerset’s prose is lush, haunting, and full of tension both emotional and political. The stakes are high, the pacing tight, and the emotional payoff hits hard. Fans of Buffy, Ella Enchanted, and court intrigue will find themselves hooked.

If you love your fantasy with teeth, passion, and a healthy dose of madness. Disillusioned is exactly the kind of chaos you need on your shelf.

Disillusioned begins from where Disenchanted ended, with stakes so high as Lilac finds herself on the Throne being forced into an arranged marriage she doesn't want but needs to protect her kingdom. Politics cause heartbreak, and her love for Garin ends in a thrall. With everything around her seemingly out of her control, she still doesn't back down from the life she wants.

Lilac and Garin are amazing characters. Their relationship is intriguing. I was hoping for Lilac to become a vampire and for them to get their happy ever after. However, what I got was so much better. A rare blood bond that can not be explained. It brings out a passion between them so great its practically feral.

It's action-packed, spicy, contains forbidden love, touch her and dies, has blood play, a morally grey MMC, and so much more. You dont want to miss this series. Can't wait to see if there's a book three.

This book took me by surprise — in the best way possible. From the very first page, I was drawn into the story, the depth of the characters, and the emotional weight behind every chapter. The author’s voice is authentic and engaging, and the themes explored felt both timely and timeless.

What stood out most to me was the storytelling — rich, cinematic, and layered with meaning. It’s clear that a lot of heart and thought went into crafting this work. As a creative professional myself, I see huge potential in how this story could be expanded visually.

Highly recommended to anyone looking for a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant read. I’m looking forward to seeing what the author does next!

Disillusioned is a stunning follow-up that expands the world of Lilac Trécesson with even more political danger, emotional depth, and dark magic. Briar Somerset masterfully blends the intrigue of court politics with the raw intensity of forbidden bonds and inner transformation. The fae bargains, monstrous threats, and the slow unraveling of Garin’s obsession create a narrative that’s rich, daring, and impossible to look away from.

The writing is atmospheric and bold, with characters who evolve through every twist. Lilac’s journey, from queen under siege to something darker and far more powerful, makes this sequel feel bigger, more intimate, and heartbreakingly human. Fans of lush worldbuilding, dangerous love, and layered heroines will find Disillusioned unforgettable.

Chaos reigns as Disillusioned picks up right where Disenchanted ends. We find ourselves back in Medieval Brittany with France encroaching, a monumental marriage proposal and So. Many. Plot. Twists.

Garin is extra morally gray and absolutely feral for Lilac in this book. We learn a lot more about his past and what drives him. I really loved the addition of new characters, especially Myrddin. They really added so much humor and emotion to the story. The cliffhanger was insane and I can’t wait for the third book, The Blacksmith’s Son.

If you like dark romantasy, speculative fiction, high stakes and vampires, then you must check out this series. You won’t regret it!

Also, I listened to the audiobook of the first book, Disenchanted, last winter and the dual narration is excellent.

I really liked it because I’ve already grown attached to the characters. This book was more drawn out than the first, which was quicker and fast paced with a lot of exciting suspenseful moments. This however could have been half the book it was. There were a lot of parts I didn’t see necessary. It did take me awhile to read because it came to a lot of “boring” parts in my opinion. The end was very exciting, and I look forward to the next book. I took a star off because of the length of the book and the unnecessary parts. However, I would recommend the books because after a while you seem to root for the Queen and Garin.

Aaahhhh I needed more of Garin & Lilac and book 2 was so good! Emotional and intense in the best ways! I’m a sucker for a vampire MMC 🤭 Garin is possessive, his yearning was 🔥 I loved the chapters from his pov. I know I love him bc he also made me furious lol So much was happening politically, secrets, betrayals, magical revelations. Loved all these side characters adding even more depth to the story and bringing some humor to the high stakes plot. The ending tho 😱 we need the next book now!

Disillusioned has a strong emotional core, and the tension between the characters is definitely the highlight — all that history, all that hurt, all that chemistry simmering underneath. It’s easy to get pulled into their push‑and‑pull, and the angst lands when it needs to.

But the story doesn’t always keep its momentum. Some scenes feel a little rushed, and a few emotional beats don’t get the space they deserve, which makes the overall impact wobble. It’s still engaging, just not consistently gripping.
