7/14/25 this was the softest ML by this author that I've read [maybe the one where FL tries to rape ML is the same? But I DNF'd it...] also like ... >.> while 😅 yo this guy is scholarly but NOT GENTLE - he's a general. It's just he's more [very] restrained. And out for revenge. But not like ... carnage - just ... solemnly cold and a smidge sullen. With you know, good reason since he suspects the emperor of murdering his family. Which ... in a way he did. Not ACTUALLY in the end, but his people did it for him ... and the emperor admits push come to shove, he would've made the same decision - which is why he never told ML the truth before he died. I think he ... didn't want to absolve himself because he felt guilty - and ... not sure how much he didn't want ML to destabilize the court?
THE FUCKING MISUNDERSTANDINGS UGH. Although I at least knew to expect just fucking gallons of dog blood going in, considering this author.
Her poor mum. Her dad was ... *sigh* ... actually the least stable out of them, in a way. A good emperor, overall a good dad ... not a great husband.
It makes sense FL didn't become the ruler - and I don't think she wanted it ... but lowkey I wish it had been more of an option/discussed. whatever. I also hope the young emperor never suspected them - doesn't seem so? So that's good.
Not bad extras, but nothing great.
Really open ended for sad Chengping, who I never really disliked - he was in a bad situation too. I liked how everyone grew up.

I do not want to write too much as it'd ruin the experience otherwise. I'd recommend going into this without reading any reviews. If you are into Chinese historical settings, morally gray characters where who is right or who is wrong is impossible to distinguish, aura farming imperfect characters, happy ending with a touch of tragedy, then this is just the right novel for you. I literally forgot to eat or sleep. It was that addicting. The plot is action packed where basically there's no true villains. Everyone is right to do what they did and wrong for their actions at the same time. I fell in love with all the side characters.

In Thousand Verdant Mountains, Ye Xuyu is meant to marry Pei Xiaoyuan, but enters the capital as a painter instead. Pei Xiaoyuan is also going to enter the capital, and is unsure why Xuyu couldn't do so as his wife. In between the two is a much bigger plot, and past grievances that need to be answered.
In the mildest way possible, this is a revenge book with romantic trappings. Or rather, this is about reclaiming things that were once thought lost, and answering for your crimes. It's not that the Romance was not there, it's that it could not go forward without certain questions being answered. I had to put the book down for a few weeks because of this, but I think the author handled the whole situation very well.
I would definitlye recommend this to anyone who is already a fan of this author.
If you like, Hidden Princess, Revenge, Political Intrigue, and Morally Grey decisions, then this is for you.
