The Promise Of Rain

Rate this book
The only thing worse than the lie that tore them apart is the truth.

Cursed with soft eyes and steep curves, Jenny Davis spent her teens dodging her mother’s bad-news boyfriends, her twenties battling small-town whispers, and the past eleven years nursing the heart Deacon Raine shattered when he left.

Bent but not broken, Jenny builds a sweet life around her safe, steady, and hers.

Then, tall, dark, and deadly returns from the military.
He wants a second chance. But he’s hardened beyond recognition. And she’d rather be alone than repeat her mother’s mistakes.

Ten years of service couldn’t purge Jenny Davis from Deacon’s veins, but it taught him to see people through a different lens. Despite his father’s warnings, his mother’s pleas, and the never-ending rumours, he’s looking at the girl he left behind.
This time, he’s determined to be her shield.

But when the truth comes to light, will he guard her heart? Or break it?

The Promise of Rain
(The Promise Duet Book 2)
by Devin Sloane

Small Towns, pretty to look at but unless you are perfect many of the people living in a small town will never accept you! Worse though, if you grew up there, if you were included in something that put the spotlight on you. Since you were young and used to hurt others, how do you then carry on. How do you face them every damn day! This was the past that haunted Jenny Davis for years. That something set of a number of small explosions. Jenny’s small explosion was losing the love of her life, the man she was sure would be her forever, the man she knew was to good for her, that explosion took Deacon Raine away from her. It sent her spiraling.

I did say some people, because the right people were on her side, once the smoke faded and some people found out the truth, they rallied behind her. Her biggest fan was Ansel Blum, he took her under his wing, gave her a job and did all he could to keep her safe….but the marks tongues leave after spitting out their vitriol….those people would never really give her a chance.

Author Devin Sloane writes some the best second chance romance books I’ve read. Her small towns can make you happy you live in the big city…any mistakes you make fade fast, there’s always more news that kicks one off the front page. Small towns though…..nope, and especially where there are still a few folks willing to take their shot at you.

Ten years have passed and now Jenny is facing the return of the man who obliterated her heart….he wants her back. But this woman, she’s been people’s punching bag for so long does Deacon stand a chance. When you think that maybe he can help her rebuild her trust is there anything else that could come between them?

Author Sloane writes stories with characters who need healing, who need to let not just their walls down but who need to relearn how to trust and believe. She goes right for your emotions, she makes you wonder is this the book that the damage has gone to far? The Promise of Rain is not just needing Rain for the local farms but for those who have been hurt and need healing. Who need the past washed away and the now and the future looking towards the sun! This was a two tissue box/five star read for me. If you love a good emotional second chance at love you will always find one with this author!

Second chance is my favorite trope and I absolutely love a good redemption story too. This book gives all of those vibes and more.

If you've read the first book in this series, you've already met Jenny. She hasn't had an easy life, and the small town that she lives in has painted her as the villain. For the past decade, she has worked to find her peace. For the most part, she has succeeded. Then, the man that broke her heart a decade ago returns. Life in the Military and memories of the woman that he never got over have hardened Deacon, but he's determined to earn a second chance with Jenny, especially after he learns the truth. There are still secrets between them though that could tear them apart.

Having read the first book, I will admit that I wasn't always Jenny's biggest fan, but I've grown to absolutely love her. The poor woman has been through so much with so very little support. I adore the relationship that she has with her "dad" Ansel, and that storyline had me crying more than any other part of this book.

There is a nice mix of steam and romance throughout this story, as well as a couple of surprises as the secrets between Jenny and Deacon come to light. If you're a fan of mature characters and small town feels, I think that you'll love this one.

The Promise of Rain is as heartbreaking as it is poetic and it's a poetic masterpiece so that tells you how deep this story is. Every character goes through an immense amount of growth throughout this story and there are deeply painful moments and deeply rewarding moments.

Jenny is an incredible FMC. She goes through hell over and over again but, while guarded, she presses on and moves forward. There are standout moments throughout this story where Jenny gets the opportunity to stand up to those who demean her and the vindication I felt for her was palpable during those moments.

Within this story is a deep level of grief that Deacon and Jenny go through. Their pain is clear and can be felt, but I truly loved how hard Deacon worked to right the wrongs of the past and to prove to Jenny that he wasn't leaving again and she was his. I want to say this second chance was easy, but these two fight so hard for each other and their happy ending and that made it all the more incredible. This is an honest romantic story that reaches deep into the soul and will leave your heart battered, but beautifully pieced together.

Thank you to Devin Sloane for the ARC.

It's no secret that I’m a huge fan of this gifted wordsmith, and I eagerly entrust my romantic heart to her with each new read. Somehow, each new romance is better than the last, but always with heartfelt, relatable themes and an uplifting resolution.

Jenny Davis and Deacon Raine have a shared past. One that ultimately drove them apart. But now Deacon is back in Moose Lake and determined to rebuild what was broken all those years ago. He finds he has a challenging road ahead, dealing not only with Jenny's reticence to revisit the past, but also the court of public opinion as well as his own family.

Fraught with past hurts and misunderstandings, judgmental opinions and scandalous secrets, this story of healing, reclaiming trust, and second chances is poignant, uplifting, and uniquely special. In a world where life is messy, faith and hope persevere and love wins in the end. Jenny and Deacon's story will utterly destroy and then carefully, painstakingly mend your reader heart, leaving you grateful for the time you spent within these pages.

This is such an emotional rollercoaster, Deacon and Jenny’s story is complex in every way. It’s heartbreaking, filled with unexpected twists and turns; but also heartwarming and a story that comes full circle for the characters.

Jenny and Deacon shared a love when they where younger, a love that other people and circumstances broke. Now older he seeks a second chance with her, to redeem himself and make them whole again. She’s hard because life situations made her like that, but she doesn’t want that anymore. You can see the struggles these people go through to get together again, and it’s hard. Not gonna lie I had trouble with some parts not because it wasn’t good but because it was sad, it’s a story of grief but also redemption; and as I myself am grieving it made it hard to get through. But it’s a beautiful story, nicely written and told. You get a lot from it as I said before, you get drama, silliness, spice and happily ever after.

Jenny and Deacon

Book 2 tells Jenny's story. The before when she had Deacon and everything was great. Then we get the after story. She went through so much. As each secret is revealed, you realize how strong she is.
Deacon comes back specifically to get his girl. He knew how skittish she was and took his time to get her to trust him. When he left he was a boy, but he came back a man. Dominant and protective. He was able to give her exactly what she needed.

The story is quite the emotional journey. Jenny’s growth is especially impressive. The way her confidence grew warmed my heart. As she got bolder she realized she had family not by blood but by love.

There were so many secrets. As each was revealed the angst grew. Some were heart wrenching. These two definitely deserved the HEA!

Oh my, this just had it all. I laughed, I cried (big, ugly sobs), I swooned, I thought 🔥🔥 and I laughed some more.
The cover shows an incredibly beautiful couple, but the story is so much more than two beautiful people getting it on. There is real issues, real healing, real hurt, real happiness. It's an emotional rollercoaster for this pair, but watching them grow and come through it all is absolutely wonderful.
I loved getting to see Jenny's story, but also getting wee snippets of Baxter and Maggie from the previous story in this collection. As well as the towns and its inhabitants that we have grown to love over a number of tales. Ansel and Darlene were an absolute riot, I want to be Darlene when I grow up!
The story kept me engrossed completely all the way through, but I have to say that epilogue was just absolutely perfect.
Bravo once again Devin, you've nailed it as always!

Oh gosh, I wished I could enter the book and give young Deacon a shake to prevent him from making that mistake. But what happened is in the past, and with him finally back in town, he finally puts into action his (broken) promises to Jenny.

I desperately wanted her to find joy again, and to finally have the happy ever after which she deserves. Lots of heartache, lots of tears, and a whole lot of grovelling later, Deacon is finally on the right track to earn back Jenny’s trust and work towards building a beautiful future together.

Those chapters where she revealed the secrets made me cry, but that ending was so sweet indeed. This was another brilliant novel from the author, and please do prepare your tissues.

I absolutely love when in one chapter I am totally frustrated with a character thinking they are being ridiculously stubborn only to realize a couple chapters later that they are actually in an emotional fight protecting themselves with every fibre of their being. Then! To morph into the strongest and healthiest version of themself by the end of the story. For an author to be able to create that beautiful of a character that literally shreds your heart and delicately stitch it back is a craft that no one does better than Devin.

And for a man to defend his woman’s honor against his family and for the said family to then change their tune to keep their family together. Absolutely swooning.

Chapter. 16. 🥵🥵

Jenny and Deacon’s second chance at love is a must read for everyone.

This is my first introduction to the author's work. Yet, I will tell you that after reading this book, I will be checking out more books by the author.

For me it was all about the emotions for me. I could never fault Deacon truly for breaking Jenny's heart. Not when I met his parents. I was so happy when Deacon stood up against his parents and sought to make amends to Jenny. Not just because he broke her heart but because he never stopped loving her. You could tell that Deacon was genuine with his feelings.

Devin wrote such a beautiful story of angst, heartache, loss, love, and second chances. So, grab your copy of The Promise of Rain now and find out why this book is not to be missed!

This is a second chance romance full of anger, hurt and the desire to never be hurt again. Jenny and Deacon just about tore each other to shreds the first time around and it's going to take quite a bit to create a new relationship. Both characters are flawed and hiding things from the other.

Sloane does an excellent job of not only writing a great story, but making it believable. There is no instant forgiveness, but a painful, slow healing. Nobody writes about heart, heat, healing and hope better. She simply creates the best pairing of characters of any writer out there.

Thanks to the author for the lovely book. All thoughts are my own.

What an emotional rollercoaster!
Deacon and Jenny's story is not for the faint of heart and if you haven't read The Locksmith's Promise, I would recommend it.
The book comes with plenty of mental anguish so be kind to yourself and check the trigger warnings.
This is a second chance romance after, trauma, tragedy, a whole lot of misunderstanding, and miscommunication. The worst part is that all of these feelings have had a decade to fester and lay dormant.
It's a bit of a slow burn which works well with everyone's emotions running on high.
But once these two share their secrets, confront their pasts and really start moving forward, well watch out.
I really enjoyed the strong females in the story, the wonderful representation of a father-figure, the friends and found family were all wonderful.
I have voluntarily left this review.

This is the first book I’ve read by Devin Sloane and I really loved it! Filled with amazing characters, all the feels and a fabulous HEA.

Jenny and Deacon have quite the love story that spans many years. There is hurt, anger, misunderstandings that have kept them apart…but their love for one another other has not wained.

Jenny has been through a lot but has become an amazing human . She’s very protective of her heart and is fearful of becoming her mother.

Deacon is back in town and has to prove himself to Devin. He is patient, kind and determined.

They have great chemistry, passion and an undeniable love for one another.

Get your tissues ready for this one. This is a second chance romance with angst, spice and healing. These characters were written so well. Jenny and Deacon almost destroyed each other in the past so it was going to take a lot to forge a new relationship. Especially since they both have flaws and are still holding onto secrets. The way back together isn't instant. That's what makes it more relatable. The spice is good as always. If you love emotional second chance spicy romance, then you'll love this one.

Devin always has a way of capturing all the best parts of a second chance romance. The angst, the healing and regaining trust.

Deacon and Jenny, these two have to face the past after a decade apart. Jenny had been through it and has been on her own. No support except for Ansel, who took over as her “dad.” Deacon is more hardened after years in the military and not being able to get over the only woman he loves. He is determined to win her back.

The story pulls you in, as there are secrets between these two that are revealed. The chemistry between them is amazing.

I literally love everything about this book. The emotional journey you are taking when you open this book, whew! Jenny and Deacon’s redemption and reconciliation was everything and more. My heart hurt for her, and for him. I absolutely loved his patience, strength and stubbornness. He was exactly who she was meant to be with. The way they both grew and changed and found their inner strength had me crying like a baby. Grab a blanket, a box of tissues and buckle in. You will not want to put this down.

Author Devin Sloane brings all the feels in her latest release, "The Promise Of Rain". As usual, Devin puts my emotions through the wringer with Deacon and Jenny's small town second chance romantic saga. A story of secrets and how the need to conceal them affects others. Highlighting that all relationships take work and that sometimes the family you find will have your back over the one your born into. Long live Harry F***kn Larry!

I received a copy from the author, this is my voluntary given opinion.

Trust is the most difficult thing to earn back once it has been broken. Even harder when it's broken by someone you love.

This book was beautifully sad. It breaks your heart and slowly mends it back together. You feel for both Jenny and Deacon, but in different ways.

You understand Jenny's pain and Deacon's anger.
Her distrust and his fear.
And you hope for the both of them that they get their HEA.

A wonderful book about love that never faded.

Oh my, Devin Sloane, you do know how to write swoony men. Deacon Raine is officially on my book boyfriend list. He's . . . well swoony in all the good ways. Earning his second chance with Jenny may have been his greatest challenge but this man has the stamina to bring home the prize. This romance book is steamy, sexy, and swoony (yes, I know that's the third time I've used the word) and once again proves the power of second chances, forgiveness, and grace.

I am thoroughly am in awe with this book. The narrative unfolds a brilliant storyline. The characters are well drawn out and they were relatable as well as believable. Jenny and Deacon's story is about a second chance but not just that it's so much more. It's about healing and forgiveness and more. This is an excellent read. And a must read.
