Avatar: Tales from Pandora Omnibus

Rate this book
Five comics stories set in James Cameron’s expansive world that take place before, during, and after the 2009 multiple Academy Award–winning film Avatar.

In the year 2154, on the moon Pandora, in a galaxy far from earth, Marine Jake Sully joined the native Na’vi through an avatar body and became their leader in the fight against the destructive RDA organization and human colonization. In Tsu’tey’s Path experience these events—events of the first Avatar movie—from the perspective of Na’vi Omatikaya warrior Tsu’tey!

Then, in the short story “Brothers,” Jake connects with the flying Toruk by remembering the depth of his bond with his twin brother and great partnerships of history and legend.

In The Next Shadow, set immediately after the events of Avatar, Jake navigates his position as both leader of the Omatikaya and former Marine as tensions ramp up between the Na’vi and the humans who remain on Pandora.

Meanwhile, in Frontiers of So’lek’s Journey, young Na’vi warrior, So’lek, finds himself one of the last survivors of his clan after the Battle of the Hallelujah Mountains. He searches for his place on Pandora and struggles with waking nightmares of war. This is the origin story of So’lek, a key character in Ubisoft’s AA PC/console video game.

Finally, set years before the events of Avatar, in Adapt or Die, Dr. Grace Augustine wants to build a bridge between the occupying humans and the Na’vi, but her plans hit a wall as a mysterious illness among Na’vi and avatars is blamed on the humans.

Seize the opportunity to delve further into the world of Avatar with these canon stories from writers Sherri L. Smith ( A Graphic Novel), Jeremy Barlow (Star Darth Maul), Ray Fawkes (Constantine), and Corinna Bechko (The Space Between), and artists Jan Duursema (Star Legacy), Doug Wheatley (Fire & 300 Years Before A Game of Thrones), Josh Hood (Star Resurgence), Gabriel Guzmán ( Scavengers), and Beni R. Lobel (Fragmentation).

Nothing too fancy but nice back stories about multiple characters from the films and 1 from the videogame (which is a really good game btw). Art is pretty good too overall.

All of the stories are pretty mid. Soleks from Frontiers of Pandora has the best writing and best character arc. I can't help but feel Avatar really holds back on expanding its lore. Most of the stories expand very little on what we always know from the films. Even with the latest film they seem to be adverse to expanding the lore further. I hear all these stores about how James Cameron has a huge manuscript on pandora yet why is it not being shown to us in the content of the comics if not in the films?

artwork is okay. No amazing panels really just serviceable.

If you enjoy small slice of life segments of in-between-movies content, then you will enjoy this.
Nothing super unique or plot intensive, though the artists are talented!
So'lek's Journey is definitely the shining star of this Omnibus.

I love the art! I especially loved adapt or die and so’leks journey. I love that we get to see some more of tsu’teys story and his family.
I’m reading the other comics soon.
(I already had read So’leks journey separately but I still love it)
