Emotions are the spark of life. Except for when they smother it.
After Lucky Island is exposed, Ben and Jemma Hodgerton know life can’t resume the way it was. With Ben’s energy power gone, his anger comes quick and fierce. Meanwhile, Jemma struggles with the consequences of her powers, leading her to view Enertin in a new way.
Her brother, Asher, is on parole after his crimes, keeping him from true freedom. But none of that matters when he gets a mysterious note luring him back to Lucky Island. Quill, on the other hand, yearns to discover who she is as a person instead of an experiment. Learning about her mother may be the key.
When the Seven Republics resist changes to their protocol for Disparate care, Buran and his team travel to convince the others of the success of therapy and support. Jemma is proof that controlling emotions is possible.
Except… Jemma has a secret. It seems Enertin—and its increased risk of dangerous outbursts—may have its place.
The fate of Disparates lies in her hands, including those of the ones she loves.
Thank you to Holly D. Morgan for the ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
First of all, I was so glad to dive back into this world after the events of One Spark, and the short break the story took after that book left us at a nice point to pick up the story again.
The characters are there, with their own characters and development. The main story here, in my opinion, was Jemma's, which felt like a nice continuation of Ben's story in book one. The other new points of view present helped fill out the book, and gave interesting new perspectives.
The first part of the book felt slow, but -and this is a big but- it didn't detract from the book. Even though at times it felt like I was waiting for something to happen, the character development and general story building kept me captivated and going. And once something did happen, I couldn't put the book down any more.
All in all, the book was great and I can't wait to see where book 3 takes us, as the cliffhanger in this book was great. I'm curious where the author will take this world, and her characters in it.
I cld not wait to get this book because I absolutely loved the first book, and even though it started off kinda slow, I was not disappointed! Holly did such a great job with this book. It sped up more me about in the 50% mark, and the way she introduced the new characters. It was such a great read, and we got some answers we didn’t quite get in book 1 but now we have more questions and another cliff hanger haha! I’m excited for the third book to release!! This series to fantastic!!
I love Jemma and Ben, they have been through so much and are still going through so much in this book. My heart kinda aches for them esp in the beginning of this book! The boys are absolutely adorable.
If you haven’t started this series yet, you need to! It’s a great sci-fi dystopian series that you didn’t know you needed!! Start with one spark, then come to Two flames and watch for the rest of the series to unfold!
Really would give this a 3.75 as the first 50% of the book seemed very slow paced. The characters grow slower in this book as I expected they would develop more quickly in the second book. Thankfully towards the end of the story the pace of action picks back up. A love confession is made and overdue, haha! Ben and Jemma need a vacation as a parent I do feel for them being in this world and keeping their children safe is a difficult task. Louie is finding his voice and it’s exciting to see where he will go forward in the next book and how he will use his powers going forward as a child. The introduction of some new characters add to the story and builds on the relationships between our main characters which should help extend to the next installment as well. Grieve from the loss and learning about her mother will affect Quill’s journey through the next book it will be interesting how she develops her character through this series and handles all the challenges she will face. I would like to see Jemma figure her situation out as she seemed more distracted in this book and the previous book she was so focused and such a good mother as the same time this storyline she seems to lose herself and still hasn’t gotten back to who she is yet. The book is a good read for those who want an interesting storyline with some actions as well as believable characters who act like regular people who readers can relate to. Will definitely continue this series!!
Another lovely installment to Morgan's adult dystopian series! Once again, I love that this dystopian series is centered on family (and parents in particular). This is everything you love about the dystopians from your high school days, but for the phase of life you are in right now!
What's great about this series, and that I think this second book continues to do well, is it shows the struggles of trying to set a good example as a parent (or adult family member) while having to also deal with your own issues. Adults do not have it all together, but most of us are trying our best and just hoping the little ones don't suffer when we get it wrong.
As another reviewer pointed out, the story does start off slower-paced, but the pace really picks up around forty percent of the way in, and it just keeps going from there all the way to the gripping conclusion (that cliffhanger--ahhhhh!!). While I came into it expecting it to move a little quicker in the beginning, looking back, I can understand why all of the setup was necessary, especially with establishing everyone's relationship dynamics and where they are mentally and emotionally following the events of the first book.
The story world really widens and deepens in this book, as we get to see and interact with members of the other republics. The mystery also deepens as to how all the different characters are connected to each other through things that happened in the past. I particularly enjoyed getting to learn more about Asher's past time on the island and Quill's family members.
Asher and Jemma had two of my favorite arcs in the book. Without giving spoilers, I'll just say that their struggles felt very real and understandable (especially Jemma's), and I can't wait to see how they continue to heal from their mistakes and grow in their abilities in the coming book(s).
Oh, and I loved Asher's relationship with his nephew Louie! It was so sweet and cute.
I was fortunate to receive an advance reader copy of this book, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book was a lot slower than the first one. It took me quite some time to even be interested or to want to keep going. I ended up pushing through though, and it was worth it. All of the exciting stuff is at the end of the book. The beginning of the book is just kind of how everything happened after the cliffhanger in the first book. How they were all adjusting to everything. The chapters were named by their energy symbols instead of their names. I liked how different that was. You were easily able to tell whose POV it was from like the first paragraph, so I didn’t have to keep going back and forth trying to figure it out. It is really well written, and so was the first one. A lot of descriptive features for places and people. I did give it a 4 star only because I didn’t like how the POV changed constantly to other people in a chapter. I almost felt like it would have been better with separate chapters instead of changing the POV. But someone else may like that. Overall, I really enjoyed both books as they are different than my normal read. They really had my interest! I can’t wait for the next book! Total cliffhanger at the end 😭
It’s great to read a series where I enjoyed the second book even more than I enjoyed the first! I love seeing growth in authors and there is undeniable growth from book 1 to book 2 of this series.
In Two Flames we get to see more of the world, more characters, and more emotion powers in action. I enjoyed the build-up, as I read it in just a few days, and found that the closer I got to the end, the less I wanted to put the book down. It’s just what a second book should be: it rounds out the characters by exploring new conflicts, it delves deeper into the layers of the story conflicts that existed in the first book, and it ups the stakes for the characters personally and for the world.
I especially loved Jemma and Ben’s struggles as parents. Parents fight so hard to be the best version of themselves for their kids, but as humans they fail. I love how this truth worked its way into the story and shaped so many of the themes.
One Spark is a really good story and Two Flames takes that story to the next level.
✨REVIEW: Two Flames is the second book in the Disparate Energy series. I also had the pleasure of ARC reading Book 1 last year. Two Flames takes us back to the dystopian world where strong emotions result in outbursts of power in a subset of the population, called Disparates. Most Disparates have one power triggered by a specific type of emotion, but we start to encounter more Disparates with more than one power. The medication that has previously been used to control emotions and power outbursts has become unsafe and the search for a solution is the central focus of this book. I love that the main characters are in their 30s and also navigating adult responsibilities, marriage, and parenthood. This book expands into additional POVs, introducing insight into the effects of various emotions on the characters and their powers.
Recommended if you enjoy dystopian, no-spice books with fully adult MCs.
Looking forward to the continuation in Book 3!
✨I was grateful to receive an Advanced Reader Copy of this book, and all opinions are my own
Two flames was fantastic, it did start out a bit slow but did pick back up and it was overall such an amazing read! Holly did an amazing job with the characters and the new characters as well their introduction were amazing! I had the opportunity to read the first book when it came out and the second one did not disappoint and was such a good sequel cannot wait for the third book epically after that cliffhanger!!
Holly D. Morgan has done it again! Two Flames is a spectacular read, a dystopian story centered around family, emotions, and parenting. Morgan is an excellent writer who can make her characters and worlds come to life. The buildup within the first part of the book was perfectly delicious and Morgan served a killer twist in the end. It's not everyday a second book in the series surpasses the first (and the first was amazing), but this takes the cake and does not disappoint.
Wow!!!! Going in to book 2, I was excited to see what happens with the disparates and woah.... I was not expecting any of what happen!!! This world that seemed to go from chaos to calm is now back into chaos but in a good way. New character introductions were a great addition and the cliffhanger ending. OMG. Guess I am waiting for Book 3!!!!
Overall this was a very exciting read. The first half or so was a bit slow, but once it picked up after about half way, it was much more interesting. I like having the multiple POVs, and I like where all the plot pieces look like they’re going, it was just a bit messy. It’s not unusual for a middle book to be a bit full! But definitely could have used a bit more work sifting it out.
What a whirlwind! This book started pretty slow but once I hit the 50% mark, things got crazy. There is so much happening with each of the characters and they're all linked so incredibly well. I still love the dystopian elements in this and the whole plot is so creative! I enjoyed this story so much and cannot wait for book 3!!!
This was such a great book. I couldn't wait to read this since I loved the first one so much. This was a bit slow at the beginning but then it became fast paced and I can't wait for the next book! Definitely 5 stars!!
Holly has done it again! I received an ARC of Two Flames, of course after reading One Spark. I genuinely love both of these books. The time spent on world and character development in both books is phenomenal. I just couldn’t put the book down! Without spoiling anything…. I can’t wait for book 3!
This book, in my opinion, was just as good as the first one in the series! It definitely left at a cliff hanger and I can’t wait for the next one to come out!
Such a great book! I was on the edge of my seat for the last half of the book. I loved One Spark and this book built on and added lots more to the story. I couldn’t believe all the things that happened in this second book. I can’t wait for the next book!
