This book provides a clear understanding of the three basic components, or keys, to sustained happiness. What I like best about this book, and about the author (which you can see in his other works) is that Andy Lacroix gives you an action plan, and he is not at all afraid to define his terms. In many other self-help and spiritual books, you find terms used by authors who either don’t understand what they’re talking about, or they fear defining their terms because they don’t want to be contradicted. In the case of Andy Lacroix, however, we find a genuine and fearless approach and his sharing of the techniques to be used. He writes in a conversational and easy to read style. You will find in this book (and other works by Lacroix) a very hands-on and practical approach which shows you how to apply what he explains so beautifully in a language that is easily understood. And for those reasons, I’m giving this book five stars. In Happier: How Gratitude, Appreciation, and Kindness Can Transform Your World, we see not theoretically but in practical terms how gratitude, showing appreciation, and acts of kindness can grow within you to cleanse negativity and allow wholeness and joy to enter your life instead. As Lacroix points out, by doing an action it becomes effortless and a part of us. Mark Twain said that a bad habit cannot be thrown out the window; it must be coaxed down the stairs one step at a time, and gently persuaded out the front door. So too, are the recommendations that the author makes to be implemented. First we learn about the essential three elements of happiness in this book, and then we implement a program of practice being gentle with ourselves and going step by step. Results are immediate. I have actually done the work, and have witnessed it in practice by others, so can attest to the effectiveness of what you will discover in this book. If you ask any person who is truly happy, joyful most of the time how they arrived at this state, you will find that in all this person does in daily life, at least three of the things they do will include gratitude, appreciation, and kindness. There are other factors too which can help you maintain a joyful life, and many roads you can take, however these three things are fundamental to every spiritual path. Now it is not enough to read the title of this book and say - “Got it.” What makes actually reading this book important is that the author defines the three above characteristics of happiness, and then shows you the steps to put them into practice. I am a fan of this author, and recommend this book and his others if you want access to your full potential.
This book is full of oversimplifications and sweeping generalizations. It is an incredibly superficial treatment of the subject, and is incredibly vapid. There is little substance to this book. There are some vague references to "scientific studies", that are meant to support the message the author is trying to put across. The text is repetitive, and the definitions of the key words presented by the author are incorrect; they're not the dictionary definitions, they are some singular interpretation of the author's.
I did find the idea of exercising gratitude, "appreciation", and kindness, as though it could be something a person can get better at with practice. He did also put forth a "30-day Challenge", which I thought was interesting as well, to practice the above every day and record it in a journal.
However, I wouldn't recommend this book, I wouldn't read it again, and other, better books have been written on the subject.
Happier: How Gratitude, Appreciation and Kindness can Transform Your World (Happiness Book 1) by Andy Lacroix is short and to the point, It takes very little time to read but will give you what you need to learn to be happy. The main ingredients for happiness are simple: gratitude, appreciation, and kindness. Using these ingredients all the time will have a positive impact on everyone you encounter, as well as a positive impact on you. It is basically the golden rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Showing gratitude and appreciation to others will make them happy and will make you happy. Most people have no idea how much a random act of kindness will do for the recipient. Knowing that you made another person's day will most definitely lead you to a happier life. Being a better person will make you happy. Read this book. It will make you happier.
“Happier” is not a big book, as far as its volume is concerned, but it is powerful book, as far as its contents is concerned. It is thought-provoking and as I read it, I realized, this book deserves to be read slowly. The book’s topics deal with gratitude, appreciation and kindness. Reflecting on these topics, one quickly realizes, these are emotions, thinking processes, or ideals, that we have the power to give freely to ourselves and to others. We don’t have to wait for others to give them to us. We don’t have to spend money to obtain them. They are already within us, we just have to acknowledge them and let them flow. This is a GREAT little book, whereby the emphasis is on GREAT. I do recommend it.
