Mortimer #2

Põgenemine paradiisist

Rate this book
Sarja teises raamatus on läbivaks teemaks üleloomuliku jõuga kivid, muteerunud loomad ja ohtlikud ained, mis võivad valedesse kätesse sattudes viia uue ökosüsteemi ja isegi uue inimliigi tekkimiseni.

Kõige keskmes on kummalised kivid, mille Rootsi teadlane Daniel Solander 1769. aastal Uus-Meremaalt leiab.

Fossildrottningen (Fossilqueen) is a sequel to Jungfrustenen (Virginrock) and even though the first book had its problems (mainly not perfect written and the main character was a bit annoying) did I want to read the sequel. Also, I needed to read the next book since the ending in the first book was a cliffhanger.

I had a lot more problems with this book than the first. First, it's badly written. The story in its essence is interesting but OMG how frustrating it is to read a book clearly lacking a good writer (well lacking two good writers since Michael Mortimer is a pseudonym for two writers) the dialogue is often bad and the characters act so stupid sometimes that it's wonder that the cops haven't gotten them yet. I mean you are wanted by the police and Interpol for murder and you risk everything by deciding to sit in a café because you need a little alone time. Meh!

Also, the books have pages of facts. I mean you read something like they have to steal a popemobile and you get a small chapter about popemobile, the history of it. It's not like someone in the book explains for the other characters or the reader what a popemobile is, instead it can be a Wikipedia page or facts from a book. Yes, I like information, but I want it immersed into the story not separated. If I will google it if want to know more of something.

Will I read the next book? Yes, I will not buy it but I will borrow it from the library like this one. I will read the next only because the story in itself is interesting, but if the story in any way gets bad then I will stop...so perhaps I will be able to read all six planned books...or not...

This took me a long time to read, but it had nothing to do with the quality of the story.
It is marvellously structured and the meta story telling is spot on.

I really like how it is both full of history, art, science and philosophy.... added the mysterious element of something that I still have no idea what is. I can hardly wait for the third book to be available in Danish.

I say this as a Gravity Falls-fan - this is the perfect adult equivalent!

Where I did enjoy the first book in this series (Jungfrustenen) I was really quite displeased with how the second one panned out. Where the first was high paced and thrilling the second started to halt and factual errors were stacked together with plain old bad writing. Logical errors and characters that all of the sudden felt stupid where they in the past had been quick and wit was sad to see.

I am not sure if this is all due to the fact that this will be a six book serie and that the author(s?) are stressing about it but all in all. I am really hoping that they will find the essence of the story again for the next book instead of just chasing a story to seem as complex and mature as possible.

Argh. The protagonist is totally annoying, the plot filled with info dumping and deus ex machinas. Not to mention plot holes. Anyhow, the grandmother of the protagonist is an interesting character, and it is a pity that she is not the protagonist. The feelings and thoughts of a super-granny with a questionable past as a geologist, a Polish spy and a anti-communist terrorist would be far more interesting than the feelings of her whining granddaughter.

Der er noget sært fascinerende over Michael Mortimers store naturvidenskabs-thriller trilogi. Indimellem bliver det alt for meget, men i andre perioder sluger man kapitlerne.
