Αφρική: Μια εισαγωγή
Στη δυτική κοινή γνώμη, στην Ευρώπη και ιδίως την Αμερική, το αφήγημα που κυριαρχεί σχετικά με την Αφρική είναι μονοδιάστατο: πρόκειται για μια ήπειρο που αντιμετωπίζεται συλλήβδην ως συνώνυμο της ακραίας φτώχειας, της οικονομικής υστέρησης, της εστίας ασθενειών όπως το AIDS και ο Έμπολα, που απειλούν όλο τον πλανήτη, της πολιτικής βίας, των εμφυλιοπολεμικών συγκρούσεων. Η «μαύρη» Αφρική είναι ο βολικός αντίποδας που επιβεβαιώνει, ως αντιδιαμετρικός πόλος, την ανωτερότητα και την αυταρέσκεια της Δύσης. Το αφήγημα αυτό, κατάλοιπο εν μέρει μιας αποικιοκρατικής αντίληψης, έχει ως βασικό του έρεισμα την άγνοια και την άκριτη αναπαραγωγή στερεοτύπων από τα μέσα μαζικής ενημέρωσης σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο.
Με την εισαγωγική του μελέτη ο καθηγητής αφρικανικών σπουδών Eustace Palmer, με καταγωγή από τη Σιέρρα Λεόνε, επιχειρεί να αναιρέσει αυτό το μονοδιάστατο αφήγημα συνθέτοντας ένα μεγάλο «εγκυκλοπαιδικό» πανόραμα της άγνωστης, ουσιαστικά, ηπείρου: επισκοπεί τη φυσική γεωγραφία της Αφρικής, την περίπλοκη ιστορία της ώς τον 21ο αιώνα —δίνοντας ιδιαίτερο βάρος στην περίοδο της ιμπεριαλιστικής επέκτασης των Ευρωπαίων, της αποικιοκρατίας και της ανεξαρτησίας—, περιγράφει τα πολιτικά και κοινωνικά συστήματα, αναλύει την οικονομία, τα περιβαλλοντικά και υγειονομικά προβλήματα, την εκπαίδευση, τη θρησκεία, την τέχνη και τη λογοτεχνία. 22 books5 followersEustace Palmer is a Sierra Leonean professor, literary critic and author. He was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone, to ethnic Creole parents.
Palmer was educated at primary and secondary schools in Sierra Leone. He attended the Prince of Wales School in Freetown. Palmer pursued his postgraduate education in the United Kingdom, where he obtained an honors degree and Ph.D. in English Language and Literature from the University of Edinburgh, presenting the thesis "The relationship of the morality of Henry Fielding's novels to their art". Palmer taught for several years at Fourah Bay College, the University of Sierra Leone. He was Professor of English, Chair of the English Department, Dean of the Faculty (School) of Arts, Public Orator, and Dean of Graduate Studies at Fourah Bay College.
He has taught at the University of Texas at Austin, at Randolph Macon Woman's College, and as a Professor of English at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone. Currently, he teaches at Georgia College & State University. Palmer is an author and a literary critic.
He was President of the African Literature Association (ALA) from 2006 to 2007. He is the recipient of the ALA's Distinguished Member award, as well as the Georgia College & State University's Distinguished Professor Award.

This is an excellent introductory text on a broad array of topics regarding Africa. Written by Sierra Leonean writer Eustace Palmer, he takes a deep yet concise look at topics ranging from history, slavery, imperialism, literature, conflict, art, and more. I’m using this textbook for an upper-division course on Africa. As Palmer notes in the introduction, this book is aimed at high schoolers through mid-bachelor’s degree in university. This text will definitely provide you with a great background on many topics related to Africa and will leave you wanting to dig deeper through other sources to learn more.
