I've always loved the Asterix books. I grew up on a literary staple of Tintin and Asterix so this kind of thing will always have a place on my shelf. However... this was disappointing. The satire and historical Easter Eggs that these books are famous for are blatantly absent. True, there is some humour, but it's not the clever humour you'd expect from an Asterix story.
I could probably go on like this indefinitely. The long and short is: some things don't mix. Oil and water. Asterix and Space-Ships. See, it even looks weird in text format.

Yeah, so Goscinny was always the ideas man and Uderzo's stories will never live up to that, but even with that in mind, this is dire.
It's not that Asterix facing aliens and comic book heroes couldn't work. There have certainly been weird crossovers in the franchise before. But Uderzo seems to have absolutely NO idea what to do with it. He plops a few aliens into the Gaul village and ... that's it. There's nothing else to it. No story, no good gags, no worthwhile character beats, not even any good drawings we haven't seen before. (Except possibly the slightly Franquin-like battle between the spaceships.) It's to the point where the punny names are (at least in the Swedish translation) explained by the characters in dialogue. Uderzo claims it's a tribute to Disney and superhero comics (and a pretty damn racist rant against manga), and comes across as never having seen or read any of the things he's nodding to.
The best thing about this is that it makes the old albums look even better by comparison.

How I missed reading Asterix! I used to love these as a kid and they don't seem to have lost their magic. The last time I came into contact with these adventures was probably through the movies, and ever since then I've been meaning to revisit them.
The humour in this is truly what makes it so entertaining. The plot is usually quite predictable (we all know the good guys win in the end) yet that doesn't seem to make an ounce of difference in my reading experience. It's just so much fun, from beginning to end, and makes you smile and chuckle throughout. The wittiness and pun frequency are just delightful!
The villains are completely laughable and wouldn't scare a fly, but they aren't really meant to. They are adversaries with way too much pride and time on their hands, who don't seem to realise they'll never defeat the Gauls! Not the brightest bulbs in the box, if you ask me...
Our heroes range from the kind-hearted, honest and foolish, to the daredevil and boisterous, all the way to the clever and eccentric. The characters are really the cherry on top here and will make the reader fall in love with their peculiarities.
Overall, a very nostalgic read, this time with a touch of sci-fi to spice things up a bit!
4.5 stars ~ This book grants an Exceeds Expectations (E) grade in Astronomy (N.E.W.T.s) ~

Si j'ai pas mis zéro, c'est en souvenir de mes jeunes années et de mes premiers pas de lecteurs avec Astérix...
Quelle honte ! Une histoire aussi scandaleusement mauvaise, j'aurai jamais cru en voir dans Astérix (et surtout pas du vivant d'un des deux créateurs). Le plus navrant dans tout ça, c'est qu'Uderzo ne se remet absolument pas en cause. Que personne n'est apprécié son travail, il s'en fout ! On a acheté, bon con.
Moi, je pense que j'en ai fini avec Astérix et ça me désole. Si le prochain est pareil (j'attendrai des avis de plus motivés que moi qui auront tenté l'expérience, pour ne pas dire pris le risque), j'arrête.
Je comprend toujours pas comment et pourquoi on en est arrivé à ça. Il est temps d'arrêter le massacre, preuve est faite qu'Astérix ce n'est plus ça... On vient d'apprendre récemment qu'Uderzo a cédé les droits de la série à un ramassis de financiers pour qu'on "exploite" (le vilain mot) son oeuvre après sa mort. Il y a quelque chose de pourri au royaume d' Armorique...

Never thought I'd ever see an Asterix book I did not like, thought that the writer took advantage of the waves of fame and decided to milk it for nothing. Worst storyline, did not like the illustrations, honestly did not know where the story was going. Horrid horrid horrid

I thought I hadn't read this...but I have...sigh...
Not a great story at all.
This is plain to see it's not the originals.
It's supposed to be a tribute from Uderzo to Walt Disney, who inspired him to be an artist...so in that regard I'm thankful.
Otherwise, it's a silly story about aliens and silliness and just too silly to be great. Give it a miss unless you're an Asterix fanatic like myself.

Often Caesar hatches a nefarious plan to conquer the one small village of Indomitable Gauls that still holds out against the Roman invaders. More rarely our heroes get caught up in an external conflict for some reason - and that's what happens the day Chief Vitalstatistix' only fear comes to pass - and it's a conflict of a scale and type not even Getafix could anticipate!
This is pure, distilled Uderzo, whimsical, fantastical and of course, down right silly, perfectly fitting for his last Asterix album. So long, Uderzo - you, along with your great friend, Goscinny, have entertained (and even educated) me as long as I've been reading independently and will no doubt bring me much fun in the future, too, even though there will be no new stories from you. The existing ones still delight every time. I hope your successors can retain the spirit of the little village on the coast of Armorica back in 50 B.C. as they bring us new adventures of Asterix and Obelix. I'll find out soon enough.

Antes de sonar fundamentalista, dos aclaraciones: El dibujo sigue siendo bonito y tiene un par de escenas que me hicieron amagar una sonrisa. Listo.
Ahora, que fluya la rabia: Este álbum es un insulto a los lectores de manga (y a los japoneses en general, representados por un bicho amarillo desagradable), un insulto a los lectores de cómic yanqui (que bastante tienen sintiéndose insultados permanentemente por sus propios personajes), y -sobre todo- un insulto a todos los lectores de Asterix. Como me siento identificado en los tres grupos, me sentí triplemente insultado. Además, aunque Uderzo ve como enemigos tanto a las invasiones de los "Magnas" como las de los "Dyswaltianos", por algún motivo estos últimos son menos malos que los primeros, tomando partido en una competencia que ya de por sí es bastante estúpida y anacrónica.
Supongo que me habría molestado menos el comic si el autor no hubiese tratado a cada página de dejarnos una moraleja, pero la única moraleja que verdaderamente me quedó es algo que jamás me habría imaginado diciendo hace unos cuantos años: ¡Menos mal que Uderzo se bajó y el siguiente álbum lo hicieron otros autores!

Un triste final para la etapa en solitario de Uderzo (Que pese a no ser tan buena como su colaboración con Goscinny tiene algunos buenos álbumes) El humor es chusco y repetitivo, el "homenaje" al cómic americano y al manga termina siendo una triste caricatura y, encima Uderzo estropea su dibujo con su abuso de efectos digitales bastante cutres.
En fin, un desastre. La serie mejoró enormemente con los nuevos autores.

Als Asterix en Obelix op everzwijnenjacht gaan ontdekken ze dat de dieren helemaal verstard staan in het bos. Als ze dan het dorp terug binnenkomen lijkt ook daar iedereen net hetzelfde lot beschoren. Enkel Panoramix en zij twee lijken te ontsnappen aan deze vreemde aandoening.
Plots verschijnt een grote gouden bol in de lucht, tot grote verbazing en angst van de Galliërs. Uit de bol komt een blauwe figuur tevoorschijn die zichzelf voorstelt als een interstellaire reiziger. Het wezentje komt van de ster Wydelistan. Hij komt de Galliërs enerzijds waarschuwen voor de Nagmas, hun aartsvijanden, en anderzijds komt hij het Geheime Wapen van de Galliërs halen, hun toverdrank.
Kort na de aankomst van de Wydelistaner (en zijn Superman-alike klonen) arriveert een andere buitenaardse bezoeker, een nagma (een keverachtige buitenaards wezen) en algauw begint een strijd om de toverdrank.
Ik moet eerlijk toegeven: dit is mijn minst favoriete album in de ganse reeks tot nu toe… ik sloeg Het Pretpakket even over (dat is namelijk een ‘specialeke’ en ik dacht ik doe eerst verder met de reguliere reeks… maar deze is me net iets te modern en doet de geest van Asterix geen goed… als het gaat over ruimteschepen en buitenaardse wezens in een reeks over de oude Romeinen en Galliërs, dan vind ik dat niet echt passen om eerlijk te zijn… de twee genres liggen te ver uiteen om ze samen te brengen.
Hoewel dit album een ode moet zijn aan Disney, aan sciencefiction en aan heel wat andere comics lijkt het me vooral een mislukte poging tot een modernere versie van Asterix. Van mij hadden ze dit mogen vermijden. Jammer wel. Hopelijk zijn de volgende albums terug beter!

So, I had nothing to read yesterday and I was a bored so I picked up this book from my bookshelf. Finished it easily in 10 mins. Nice book with great humour, it's another fun read for people who want to read especially quick books.

Poco más se puede decir que lo que reza el título. La calidad de Uderzo como guionista no es discutible, es mala a secas y, desgraciadamente, su calidad como ilustrador está decayendo. Se trata de una de las historia menos ingeniosas y más estúpidas de los invencibles galos.

Ich würde echt behaupten, dieser Band hat meine Kindheit und alles, was ich an Asterix liebe, zerstört. Handlung weiter hergeholt als die Kinder von Madonna (sic!). Hat nichts mehr mit dem klassischen Asterix zu tun.

Die Geschichte fängt an wann Asterix und Obelix im Wald wandern auf der Suche nach wilden Schweinen. Aber etwas ist ganz speziell, die Schweine sind stocksteif. Die Freunde kehren zum Dorf zurück und auch dort sind alle Personen erstarrt. Der Grund dafür ist die Ankunft eines Außerirdischen. Etwas später gibt es noch mehrere davon...
Die zwei verschiedene sind gekommen um die Geheimwaffe der Gallier zu finden. Sie möchten nämlich ihren Feind zerschlagen und sie hoffen mit der Geheimwaffe den Sieg zu erhalten.
Ich mag dieses Szanario gar nicht. Asterix, die Römer und einige überirdische Figuren? Nein, das klappt nicht. Tur mir leid.

I have always loved the Asterix books, but this one is unreadable. No wit, no clever historical asides and Latin puns, instead for the first time in thirty odd books we have aliens, spaceships, giant robots, superheroes, and a satire on the American invasion of Iraq (according to Uderzo).
After writer Goscinny passed away, Uderzo wrote and illustrated nine more books. This is the last one, the nail in the coffin before it was passed on to another writer and illustrator, and proof that comic book writers are just as important as artists.

Me ha gustado el hecho de que metan alienígenas y el homenaje a Walt Disney. Sin embargo, el conflicto central es uno que ya hemos visto hasta la saciedad en la serie.

Pas mauvais, mais j’ai trouvé que l’aspect ¨ science-fiction ¨ dénaturait un peu la série. Ce ne sera pas mon album favori.

This chapter of Asterix, has introduced a lot of new elements; two opposing space faring race of aliens, an Ubermensch slave robots, a heated conflict between said alien races as to who gets to own the magic potion. But all of that feels out of place in an Asterix comic.
The artstyle has definitely gotten better, but the heart of the series, the scathing satire and the hard hitting wit is nowhere to be seen. This might as well be another episode of some Saturday morning children's cartoon with all the different 'stuff' happening on screen, with little to amount to in terms of substance.
I'm tentatively giving it 3 out of 5>
