Readers and critics alike fell in love with Stephanie Gertler's Jimmy's Girl and The Puzzle Bark Tree , praised as "engaging [and] insightful" by Midwest Book Review . Now, fearlessly delving into the hidden depths of the heart, she has crafted a wise and moving novel about the bonds of mothers and daughters and the relationships we cherish.
This was the 2nd time I read this book, but enjoyed it nonetheless. The unfolding of the mysterious little girl and her father was interesting when put next to the main character''s experience of being raised by her father.
Like a puppy - Claire suffers with separation anxiety - her mom deserts her when she is a toddler, her kids grow up and go off to college. What's this neurotic psychiatrist to do? Well....along comes Nick, a pitiful architect who took off with his blind seven year old kid Kayla, and ends up for a while at Claire and Eli's Victorian inn located in Drifting, CT. Unlikely events unfold which puts Eli, a veterinarian, who has a horse problem to deal with to boot, as well as his meddling wife's fixation on Kayla and Nick. The only thing that doesn't happen (spoiler alert here) no one gets murdered - so there. Enjoy. Oh yeah, Stella, the dog, puts up with Claire throughout. That is when she isn't shunted off to Annie while Claire collects her past. The story, believe it or not, is a fun read.

Loved it. Easy read. Kinda like Hallmark movie which usually I don't like; they're overly simplistic. However, "Drifting" is about Mothers and daughters...one of my favorite topics. Then the sweet little blind girl character is extremely loveable!
A interesting novel about a woman named "Claire" whose Mother named "Sulie" ran away when Claire was just a baby and she was lovingly raised by her Father "Jack". Claire married a wonderful man named "Eli" who is a veterinarian and together they own a Victorian Inn and have two grown children. Early one morning a man registers at the Inn with his 7 yr old blind daughter and although Claire finds nothing out of place with the man, Eli does not like the man and is very uneasy about him. Eli's instincts prove to be right and the little girl is in danger but Claire and Eli help the police in saving her. Claire also finds her missing Mother but really does not find the answers she seeks in that regard. I enjoyed the story and it shows the different depths and kinds of love within a family structure.
A man and his blind daughter rent a room at a seaside inn. The innkeeper identifies with them because her father raised her when her mother abandoned them. This happens at a time when the innkeeper has just become an empty-nester. An attachment develops between the daughter and the innkeeper, but soon we learn that things aren't what they seem to be. Sometimes we find what we seek, and sometimes we don't.
I really loved this book. I thought the twists in plot kept me interested and I found myself feeling much like Claire towards NIck and his daughter. I thought the way the author made the reader think about how Eli thought toward Nick and slowly change their feelings was wonderful. This was one of the best books I have read in a while.
It was an okay book started out a little boring to me at first and didnt get interesting till half way thru. Kind of leaves you hanging at the end. Basically about a mother who leaves her daughter when she was an small child.
I don't need to spend a lot of time saying that this was a great book. The concept itself wasn't overly creative but thats the beauty...it didn't need to be! It is a beautifully written book.
This was just okay. I felt the main character was under developed. More could have been done to follow the conection between the main female character and the little girl.
