No one knows the streets better than Detective Samantha Kelly, until a deranged killer turns her life and the City of Riverview upside-down. Buried secrets and twisted lies ripple the surface, but the truth is hidden deep beneath the body count. No one can be trusted and everyone’s a suspect. Time is running out until the next kill, and the next cryptic rhyme carved deep in their flesh. Will she find him in time to save the next victim, or is he coming for her?
This book introduces us to Detective Samantha Kelly. Two bodies have been found .. with their eyes sewn open and their lips sewn shut. The bodies are riddled with knife cuts and poems are cut into their skin. It's up to Samantha and her partner, Jason, to find who is responsible. Samantha is a multi-layered person. She has abandonment issues .... her mother just disappeared when she was a young child, her father committed suicide, and she feels that everyone she cares about will leave her sooner or later. That makes it especially hard when she's harboring feelings for her partner.
As they investigate the crimes, Sam's past reaches up and slaps her in the face. There are secrets and lies and coverups and she doesn't know who she can ... or cannot trust. Being the only female, and a detective at that, brings its own problems. The good-old-boys-in-blue club is alive and well.
This is a new author to me who did a good job in bringing her characters to life. The only complaint I would make is that most of the 'conversation' in the book was screaming, yelling, shouting. If this had been an audiobook, I probably would have developed a headache.
There will, no doubt, be a second in this series. It will be interesting to see how Samantha develops over time and where the relationship with Jason goes. Lots of sexual tension ... no action beyond a bit of kissing and hand holding.
All in all, not a bad book. I will be looking for the next one. 4 stars ... I liked it!
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an unbiased and honest opinion.
Loved this book. There were several grammar issues, but overall a very well written book. I cried at the end. Would like to know who walked up to her door. I haven't been able to find a second book so I could find out. I did not figure out who was killing the women till the very end. Makes it a better read that way. Great mystery.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters are well developed and the author kept me reading late into the night. I look forward to the next book in the series!
Being the only female detective on the Riverview Police Department was already a challenge, being the former chief's daughter just added another wrinkle to her job. Samantha finds herself facing two grisly murders that haunt her. She finds herself in conflict with the chief and crusty detective Ward who seems to block her investigation. Will she be able to solve the mystery or will the body count rise?
I thought the plot was good and the story line kept me guessing. However, I found that the narrative was confusing. At times I was lost as to whom the thoughts should be attributed to. Not always clear whose mind or thoughts I was reading. I like a good mystery but concussion doesn't always equal mystery. Basically a good book though.
Too wordy, felt the author was trying too hard to draw the reader into the plot with flowery descriptions and explanations. The use of "either" instead of "neither" is probably an editing error. I did like the introduction of new characters essential to the story towards the end of the book.
Loved this book. It was fast-paced, suspenseful, and grabbed me from the first page. Just what I look for in a great psychological drama. My only disappointment is that the second book in this series hasn't been written.
