Youngy: The Autobiography of Alan Young

Rate this book
Alan Young was born in Kirkcaldy but played his entire professional career in English football with Oldham Athletic, Leicester City, Sheffield United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Notts County and Rochdale.
Alan Young's story is one of a talented, brave striker who played at the highest level of the domestic game but also experienced human misery at its lowest once his playing career was over. The account of his playing and coaching career is entertaining and compelling with remarkable stories around some high profile personalities that are still involved in the game today. There is an entirely new tale to tell once he leaves the game he loves and he exposes his innermost thoughts with a frank and insightful, though always articulate, delivery. 'Youngy' doesn't just recount the good times of his playing career; he also offers valuable insight and moments of perception and understanding of some of the darkest days of his life.
He currently works as a broadcaster on BBC Radio Leicester, summarising on the local radio coverage of Leicester City's current campaign.

This book was a quick read, enjoyable little facts spread throughout, enough to keep you reading until the end. I enjoyed reading about Alan Young's life and career. I just wish there would have been a little more about Mr. Ed. I guess there wasn't too much to say and maybe it had been just too long to remember the details. Still, a worthwhile read.

This book was fantastic! It's divided into 3 parts: 'Straight from Wilbur's Mouth', 'Lips Don't Sweat' and 'Looking Back.' 'Straight from Wilbur's Mouth' details how the popular 1960s sitcom, "Mister Ed," was created, how the actors were choosen, how Mister Ed behaved on the set, etc. Young even allows his co-star, Connie Hines (Carol Post), share her memories of the show and her life after the show ended. The second part is about Alan Young's modest childhood and his experiences as an actor on TV, film and in the theatre. This part expands on some of the stories only mentioned (for example, the author's date with Marilyn Monroe) in Young's other book, "There's No Business Like Show Business...Was." Finally, Young looks back on Mister Ed and his career in 'Straight from Wilbur's Mouth.' The book is also filled with many wonderful photos. Mister Ed would be proud!

Highly enjoyable sequel to Alan Young's earlier book about Mr. Ed. More info on the creating of the series, how the original pilot was changed, role of George Burns, and many of Mr. Ed's "quirks".
