About the author

Maisie Thomas was born and brought up in Manchester, which provides the location for her Railway Girls novels. She loves writing stories with strong female characters, set in times when women needed determination and vision to make their mark. The Railway Girls series is inspired by her great aunt, Jessie, who worked as a railway clerk during the First World War.

Maisie now lives on the beautiful North Wales coast with her railway enthusiast husband, Kevin, and their two rescue cats. They often enjoy holidays chugging up and down the UK’s heritage steam railways.

Dreams Come True at the Wartime Hotel is the third book in this heartwarming trilogy and my favourite of the three as it rounds up every character’s story perfectly.

Kitty, Lily and Beatrice live at Dunbar’s Hotel with Abbie, Kitty’s daughter, and Mrs Ivy Dunbar, Kitty’s mother-in-law. Whilst the men are away at war, it’s the women who step forward on the home front. The feckless actions of Bill, Kitty’s husband, mean that she is running the hotel as a storage business and has also branched out into wedding and funeral receptions with the help of her friends and family.

The future for Kitty and Lily seems uncertain. The thought of Bill coming home and taking all that Kitty has built up is unthinkable to her, and Lily is pregnant with another man’s child so reconciliation with her husband seems an impossibility. Beatrice is content with her life working in welfare and running children’s clubs but she does sometimes feel like she has missed out on family life. What will the future hold for these three plucky women?

I loved reading this book and catching up with the characters I have so enjoyed reading about. I had hopes for the conclusion of both Beatrice’s and Lily’s stories and I was thrilled with the outcome for each, but with Kitty I thought it could only go one way and I was wrong. The author came up with a much better idea and I couldn’t have wished for more.

This whole trilogy has been a delight to read. It’s about strong women courageously forging their own way during wartime and doing a jolly good job of it. The stories are easy to read and flow beautifully whilst covering the hardships of life during conflict and the joys of romance and friendship. Highly recommended for all saga fans.

Having enjoyed reading the first two books in the series, I was very keen to learn more about how the women at the erstwhile Dunbar Hotel were progressing. For first time readers, the author includes enough detail at the beginning of the book to make it easy to read along.

This portion of the Manchester based story begins in 1943 and the ladies of the Dunbar Hotel are quite hopeful that the tide is beginning to turn in the war and that things are finally improving for the country. This doesn't suddenly make life easy, but hope definitely helps.

Throughout the series readers have seen how the role of women has started to change as a result of the war and absence of the men who are off fighting. Kitty has been having success running the hotel as a storage place for furniture, and also hosting wedding receptions. She does this without any spousal support and has reached a level of frustration that divorce is very much on her mind. Her husband is not best pleased by this, and even her mother-in-law is not behind her initially at any rate. Her daughter Abbie is fourteen and has left school and joined the working world. (How strange does that seem to us now in 2026!) She adores her father and is very angry when she hears of the potential divorce.

Meanwhile Beatrice has no regrets about leaving her job as the Incontinence lady and enjoys her new job that allows her to help the children who have been forced by circumstance to miss school to care for chronically ill parents. She continues to run her boys clubs too, but the atmosphere seems to be changing and it worries her. Might some of the boys be getting into trouble? This ultimately leads her to be involved in a bit of detective work that ends up being important both in terms of the war and her own hopes and dreams.

Lily's pregnancy is progressing and Kitty's mother-in-law is keen to have her move out before Abbie can be influenced by her and before the neighbour's catch wind of it. That in itself will cause pressure but Lily is also concerned about how her husband Daniel would react to knowing she carries another man's child. When his manipulative mother gets involved, her life really does become a pressure cooker. Thankfully, she has Kitty on her side.

What really stood out to me from this book and the whole series was the strength and resilience of the women and the importance of the friendships they count on. The author did a very good job tying up all the loose ends for each of the women, but as a reader I am sad to say goodbye to them. Cheers to Maisie Thomas for writing this lovely saga.

It's January 1943 and everyone is celebrating seeing the new year in and Kitty and her daughter Abbie who is now fourteen years old are wondering if this might be the year that the war might finally end. Ivy, Kitty's mother-in-law doesn't think it will happen anytime soon though. But things certainly don't go smoothly when Kitty makes an announcement to her husband, she can't put up with his ways any longer and is quite capable of looking after herself and earning some money. But this certainly "puts the cat amongst the pigeons" and soon everyone is on tenterhooks about the future.
Beatrice is happy doing her new job, once she had been taunted for being inky stinky after being the incontinence lady! But will she find it easy especially when the police get involved with stolen items from a nearby factory, is someone she knows involved?
Lily too is worried that her little secret is going to spoil the reputation of Dunbar's, but how wrong will she be?
This book certainly ties up all the loose ends of everyone who lives and works at Dunbars, I really enjoyed reading it and finding out about all the characters lives, loves and futures.
Even if you haven't read the previous books in this series, you can easily catch up as there's a recap in the beginning of this book, as with the previous books this one is superb and unputdownable, you just have to find out what happens to everyone, it certainly kept my attention throughout and I was so sorry when I got to the end. As always with books written by this great author I'm sure it will be an instant best seller. A five-star read from me and I can't wait to read more sagas by Maisie Thomas.

I have been really enjoying this series. Kitty is such a strong character, doing whatever she can for her family and friends. She has kept a roof over their heads and food on the table knowing that she would be judged.

In this book conflicts arise between Kitty and Ivy, her mother-in-law. Her attitudes from the past constantly cause tensions in war torn England. Kitty has made important decisions about her future and Ivy does not support them. Ivy vocalizing her opinions had me struggling to remember to not put today's values on the past. Kitty's support for Lily had me cheering loudly and Ivy grumbling.

Lily's life gives glimpses into what it might have been like for my aunt. Books talk a lot more about war babies than my family ever has. Panic rises as Lily starts to show her pregnancy with an illegitimate child. Lily has found herself in a very tenuous situation. Her mother-in-law's scheming is quite impressive as she tries to protect her son, Daniel. The suspense of what would happen became quite intense. Would she ever find happiness?

Glimpses into what might have happened across the nation had me excited to see what would be exposed. I found myself reading chapter after chapter for just a little insight into what might have been. I was shocked reading about thefts from war factories. I couldn't believe who was roped into being part of the theft ring. With each WW2 historical fiction I read, thanks to authors like Maisie Thomas, I gain a little more understanding of the atrocities that occurred in a time that we must not forget.

Another fabulous saga of this series that takes you back in time through the eyes of a variety of female characters, facing up to the challenges of living during WW2.

We're back with Kitty at Dunbar's hotel where she has made a real success of running her own business. But as always, new challenges are facing her and she is deciding what's best for her in the long run. Not easy to do for women during the 1940's. Her daughter, Kitty, is also helping out and seems a real chip off the old block in her 'can do' attitude!

And Beatrice is back, running kids clubs at the hotel, a place for children to go and have things to do, but that is facing an uncertain future due to local thefts being blamed on the children. And we catch u with Lily too who is facing a very personal dilemma, much frowned upon during those times and it is just so fascinating to see what women had to deal with through social pressures and norms .... all against the backdrop of the uncertainty of what the future of the country was gong to be because of the war.

you get plenty of time with each character to connect with their stories that they're going through, and you really go through the whole range of emotions with them from the highs and lows of real life and the joys and despair it can bring. I will be very sad to say goodbye to these characters as this has been such a wonderful series. Highly recommend!!

This is an easy book to read. The characters are well-portrayed and they seemed to brighten up this story that set during WWII. All the women characters have had their fair share of problems. This is an emotional and entertaining read that's filled with hope and strong friendships. They are all hoping for fresh starts once the war is over.

Dreams Come True at the Wartime Hotel by Maisie Thomas is the third book in the Dunbar Hotel saga, centered, obviously, around the Dunbar Hotel. Kitty’s husband owned the hotel but he was currently in the service and there was no need for a hotel so Kitty had found other ways: storage for bombed out families; wedding and funeral receptions, and some rental income. She knew her husband coming home with bode no well as he was a terrible spendthrift. Removal men had already taken all the furniture. She was determined to divorce the man and try to start her own business once he took possession of the hotel. Her daughter, Abbie, lived with her, just a teenager; Beatrice, a middle-aged woman who worked with the welfare people; Lily a young friend, and her mother-in-law.

Love, betrayal, divorce, forgiveness are all parts of this entertaining, ongoing story. It is basically a soap opera in writing. Things tend to work out, and most of the problems these women’s did. Although others may not appreciate the outcomes. The personalities of the women are engaging as is the story. Independence ruled these women in a time when the world was changing.

Dreams Come True at the Wartime Hotel is the newest installment in the Wartime Hotel series by the talented author Maisie Thomas.

Kitty is thriving as she manages the hotel in its alternative usage including wedding receptions being hosted there. Abbie has left school and started working, but she is disheartened by some news concerning her parents. Can Kitty provide her with the understanding she needs? Ivy continues to live with them, along with Beatrice and Lily. After a conversation with her mother-in-law, Lily contemplates moving away, but will she be convinced to stay? Meanwhile, Beatrice enjoys running the clubs for young people but senses an unusual atmosphere; can she uncover the cause?

I absolutely adore this series and genuinely hope to see more of Kitty and her companions in the future! It feels like there’s still unfinished business for Kitty, and I believe there’s love waiting for her! I’ve been captivated by this story on my iPad whenever time has permitted, completely engrossed until the very end. All of the characters are so relatable and you feel as though you are one of the Dunbar family!

While I recommend reading the earlier books in the series for the fullest and best experience, it’s not strictly necessary, as Maisie weaves in flashes of the past to provide context about previous events.

I have read all the series of the Wartime Hotel and in some ways it was shame to come to the end of the story.

But what a fabulous end it was. We once again meet Kitty and Abbie, the indomitable Ivy Dunbar, Beatrice and Lily. There is much talk of divorce which must have been unusual during WW2 but as was often stated would have been inevitable after women had to take such a large role during the War and realised they didn’t always have to put up with the behaviour of their menfolk. Equally men who fought for our country found that there were many ‘irregular babies’ when they came home, which they found hard to deal with.

To say too much would provide so many spoilers. Lily and Daniel needed to sort out their differences and his mother, Kitty and Bill needed to make decisions, Abbie matured and grew up. And Ivy - Ivy found her softer and more amenable side.

The book as always was well researched and well written.
There was unexpected though welcome romance for one character, reconciliations and forgiveness with a sprinkling of mystery along the way. Beatrice still works in Welfare and helps children who care and runs her ‘Gentleman’s Club’ for the boys.

In some ways it’s sad to see the end of the series - in others the loose ends were tied up in a very satisfying way.

As the War carries on through 1943, there is the sense that the inhabitants of the Dunbar Hotel are starting to look toward the future . Kitty makes a far-reaching decision about her own future and comes to terms with her ambitions for her own career. In this she is typical of many women who were left behind to take on the jobs men used to do. Having carried on and kept the factories open, a debate was had as to what a women's place in socirty should be after the war. Should women step back and give up the work they have been doing?

Changes are in the air for other inhabitants in the hotel. Beatrice is also enjoying her work in welfare and the WVRS but concerned as to what will happen to the young carers once peace has come. She also has to come to terms with her personal feelings and decide if she can open herself up for a new relationship. Im many ways the Dunbar Hotel itself has stood as a character in the stories throughout this series. As the war begins to turn, there is news as to what its future might be. Once more Wartime Manchester provides a great backdrop for a sries which has captured the details of the period.

I was very eager to read the much awaited conclusion to this saga.

The last book ended on a few cliffhangers, and I felt distraught with the decisions made by our leading characters. I loved how the author tied up all loose ends.

Lily finds herself expecting while she had hoped to reconcile with her husband, Daniel, whom she had been separated from. At first glance, this seems like a dream pregnancy after the sudden death of her son, but the entanglement in which Lily finds herself reeling from casts a stumbling block in her path to happiness with Daniel.

Beatrice, walked away from her last chance relationship in the previous book, choosing to pursue her career. Can she have a successful career and find someone to love at the same time?

Kitty has been the stalwart leader of the bunch as the owner of Dunbar's. Her savvy business sense and wartime independence has made her realize that her husband's frivolous spending has caused an irreparable rift in her marriage.

If you are a great fan of WWII historical fiction with life on the home front in England, you will especially enjoy this series and book. This book worked well as a standalone book.

I was so excited to read the next instalment in the Wartime Hotel series, and I’m delighted to say I was not disappointed. Dreams Come True at the Wartime Hotel by Maisie Thomas completely drew me in from the very first chapter.

The story flows beautifully, balancing warmth, emotion and period detail in a way that makes it impossible to put down. I found myself reading well into the early hours, always telling myself “just one more chapter” — and then immediately starting the next.

One of the greatest strengths of this novel is its characters. They are so vividly and lovingly brought to life that spending time with them feels like catching up with people you already know. Their challenges, hopes and relationships feel authentic and heartfelt, making you truly invested in every moment.

This is a really excellent read — comforting, engaging and deeply satisfying. I can’t recommend it enough, whether you’re already a fan of the series or discovering the Wartime Hotel for the first time.

This is the third book in the Wartime Hotel saga series and yet again I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It was great to be back with all the wonderful characters at Dunbar’s hotel and learn how life is going for them all. There’s some romance and a mystery to be solved as these women deal with all that’s going on. The war is coming to an end and the men folk will soon be back but the women, especially Kitty Dunbar are determined to keep their independence. This is a lovely read but also one that shows how strong and determined women can be even when faced with difficult situations, Maisie Thomas has a fabulous way of describing her characters and bringing the story to life through her writing and at times I felt I was there with them back in 1945 as I progressed through the book, Sadly this is the final book on the series but I am really looking forward to reading Maisie’s next book.

It was lovely to continue reading about Kitty, Beatrice and Lily in this book, three very different women trying to get through the war years in Manchester.

Kitty in particular really had my admiration. Because we don't have to worry these days about having a husband to sign off on things, we kinda forget that it wasn't all that long ago when women didn't have a heck of a lot of say! The unfairness of her situation really got on my nerves at times, I have to admit.

Each one of these women (and some pretty cool secondary characters as well) had an interesting story to tell and I wondered how it was all going to play out. It always strikes me that people who had to get through WWII were made of strong stuff and the way they managed and pivoted really makes me admire them and also gives me fresh appreciation for people like my grandmothers who had to deal with quite a few of the same issues as well.

4.5 stars from me.

I had tears in my eyes at the end of the book! The title gave me hope when all was down in the middle of the book! This is a brilliant series and it's great to read about how not only did women make a difference and become invaluable but their relationships with each other became unbreakable. Opinions and morals changed and things that were once frowned upon became acceptable.

Having family in Manchester this book always makes me want to go into the city centre and go to places like the Midland Hotel! The author paints such a great picture and the book is well written and easy to follow and enjoy.

I'd recommend the whole series to anyone who enjoys saga type books and historical fiction.

Set in Manchester, 1943, as civilians are living amidst the daily struggles of wartime. Maisie Thomas perfectly blends historical facts with the most authentic and vivid characters. She always has the knack of making her characters feel like my own pals with their genuine warmth and sincerity.

Kitty, Beatrice and Lily share such a firm friendship that they are more like sisters to one another. They rejoice in each other’s successes and they help each other weather the storms. They have all experienced their own highs and lows; they deserve some happiness. And that is just what this book is all about; finding that happiness and dreams coming true in ways these ladies could never have imagined. It is such a joy to see Kitty grow in confidence and realise how much she is capable of; for Beatrice it’s never too late for love; and for Kitty, love can triumph over mistakes and criticism.

The strength found in friendship and community just shines from the pages in this heartwarming, uplifting story. I am in no doubt that the future of Dunbar’s is in extremely good hands and looking very promising indeed!

A Most Enjoyable Novel

Favorite quote: "That has a kick like a donkey with a grudge." I strongly recommend this historical WWII novel to anyone who appreciates quality writing, and relatable characters. Previous storylines were resolved, but not all (I hoped Bill would thoroughly disgrace himself, and both Ivey and Kitty might find a beau.) I'm also very curious about the legal repercussions that wives may have faced in the UK as a result of financial disasters created by their spouses.

What a wonderful story so good to catch up with what was happening.

We had everything romance and also some sadness. There was a bit of a mystery in the book which I didn’t realise who the person behind it was which was a bit of twist in the book and was certainly a turn of events. I like all the characters and also how things worked out for some of them.

It was well written and I know this is the last book in the series but I was hoping there would be another one to find out what happens to the main character whether she would get her happiness.

Would recommend this book.

This is the final book in a trilogy, and although it works as a standalone, I would advise reading them in order to understand the full story of the characters. This series follows hotel owner Kitty and her friends Lily and Beatrice. This time round, war is ending and this means change for the women - can they find happiness?

I love strong female characters, and this series has many. I really liked how the author ended the three women's stories, the books have made me feel every emotion and I have really enjoyed them all. I will definitely look out for more by the author.

The Dunbar Hotel has closed as a hotel by runs other businesses within. Kitty is planning its future although she’s not sure that includes her husband who has squandered money from Kitty. The usual suspects of her daughter Abbie, Mother in law, and friends Lily and Beatrice all appear in this episode. You need to read these books in order to get the best out of the saga. I shall miss these characters but thanks to Maisie and her publisher.

What a wonderful, uplifting book this is! Each of the characters, Kitty, Abbie, Ivy, Beatrice and Lily have all had their crosses to bear. Their trials and tribulations play a large part in the previous books in the series. Reading this book, when finally things started to improve for them all, was an absolute pleasure. It definitely had me run the gamut of emotions, and by the last page, I had a huge smile on my face. Dreams DID come true at the Wartime hotel.

I do believe it’s official. I will read anything Maisie Thomas writes. She is such a talented storyteller, and her creations captivate this reader. This is book three in her historical saga series and is yet again, another totally engrossing book.

This WWII saga could be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend grabbing the first two so readers can learn each character’s backstory. (These are also excellent on audio).

Fans of character driven historical fiction will love this series, as well as this latest entry. The homefront of WWII is fascinating and these featured characters are the strongest, bravest and kindest women. I rooted for them all and wished them so much happiness.

There is so much to enjoy – captivating storytelling, fully developed characters and a setting so well researched that I felt like I was there. The characters and the issues are so real and often times so difficult, but there is so much hope. So good. Five stars.

Brimming with rich detail and emotional depth. I am in love with the strength and courage of these women. I cheered for what they achieve and the success of their dreams. It is not always easy and fun but I enjoyed the tough times just as much as the good. A tale of friendship and fresh starts filling the charming words.
