A Realm of Revelry

Straw & Gold

Rate this book
Some names hold power.
Some love stories demand a price.

For thirteen years, the Ravenfae Princess Morella has been bound by a marriage contract to the distant and powerful King Killian. She could have broken the agreement at any time, but Morella has her reasons. Only Killian possesses the magic strong enough to save her brother’s wife from the fleeting lifespan of a human. So she journeys to his kingdom, determined to secure a happy ending for everyone—including herself.

But her new husband is cold, distant, and avoids Morella at all costs until the day he uncovers her true heritage as she spins straw into golden thread. With this new discovery, Killian strikes a bargain: If Morella can uncover Killian’s true name over the next three months, he will use his power to transform her brother's wife into fae.

The deeper Morella digs, the closer she and Killian become—until their heated whispers turn into passionate nights. And when the darkest truth of the bargain is finally revealed, Morella understands the depth of the role she has to play in saving the husband she has come to love.

Straw & Gold is a short and spicy standalone retelling of Rumpelstiltskin set in A Realm of Revelry Series. These fairytales can be read in any order, but the author suggests reading in the order they are published for the maximum storyline impact.

A steamy retelling of Rumpelstiltskin 🔥🤭 (yes, I had to google how to spell it 🤣)

In this second novella from the Realm of Revelry series we follow Morella, a fae princess who’s engaged to marry a fae King from a different kingdom. She’s determined to make the best of her new life and marriage, but King Killian is apparently not so eager, he’s cold towards her and keeps her at a distance.

I liked the main characters very much. The story is told in dual POV so we get to know both their thoughts. Morella is not intimidated or subdued by Killian's coldness, she’s not afraid to say her piece and make decisions on her own, she’s definitely not a passive observer in her own life and I loved that! She’s also self conscious about her health and magical abilities, which adds another layer to her character.
Killian is brooding and a bit dramatic (although he'd probably deny these allegations 🤣) and I enjoyed how disconcerting he found Morella's actions.
I thought the way their relationship evolved was really well done for such a short novella, in this the author excels once again! The spicy scenes are open door and very much present through the story, but in a way that feels natural to the romance plot.

About the retelling aspect, I have limited knowledge of the original story so I can’t say much, but I felt in addition to Rumpelstiltskin there were also some elements from Beauty and the Beast (perhaps a nod to Once Upon a Time fans? 🤭). In any case, I liked that the elements of the original tale were present, but the author once again manages to make this story her own.

In this second book the world building is expanded, and we learn more about other fae kingdoms and their inhabitants. I thought it was interesting how the fae from different kingdoms have their own physical characteristics and magical abilities. I hope we get more stories in this series that keep expanding this universe!

Straw and Gold can be read as a standalone, although the characters from Curse and Spindle are present here so I recommend reading that one first for the best experience.

Overall I continue to fall in love with this author's fairytale retellings! I'm hoping for the story of Morella and Korven's mother next 👀

Thanks to author Chelsey Ann Tompkins for providing an eARC

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4 stars)
🌶️🌶️ (2 spice)

This is book two in the A Realm of Revelry series. Like the first book, it’s on the shorter side, but it doesn’t feel lacking in any way. It’s clearly a fairytale retelling, but it only uses the framework and spins an entirely new story from it.

The story opens so well. We get a glimpse of Korven and Seraphine (and OMG, Avici!) even if it’s just for a moment. It was such a fun way to kick things off.

Morella is funny, strong, and such a fantastic female lead. I loved her sass, her confidence, and how she goes after what she wants. She can take care of herself, and she knows it. Killian is broody and yes, sometimes I wanted to yell at him but the book does a great job of showing why he is the way he is. I was honestly impressed with how much the author delivered in just over 200 pages.

The book has a clear plot, a strong direction, and yes open door spice. It’s not overpowering, though, and it doesn’t take away from the actual story, which I really appreciate.

💖 What I Liked:
The characters, especially Fedir total standout
The strong, clear plot from beginning to end
The twist at the end I didn’t see it coming!

😕 What Didn’t Work for Me:
The spice is open door, but something about it felt a little off for me. Maybe the word choices? It just didn’t quite hit like I hoped.

Would I recommend this book?
Yes. I really liked this one and the first in the series.

Would I reread it?
Happily. It’s the kind of fun, quick read I could pick up again.

How I’d sum it up:
A short, sassy, spicy little read that hits all the right notes.

I devoured this book in one sitting—yes, literally couldn’t put it down! From the very first page, I was swept into a world that felt like a blend of dark fairytales and something deliciously enchanting, with major Maleficent vibes. The writing is lush and imaginative, with a whimsical edge.

The main character was everything I wanted—fierce, complex, a little dark, and utterly captivating with gold tipped wings. Romance and spice 🤌 (chef's kiss).

If you're into magical worlds, strong heroines, and a romance that sizzles, this is a must-read. I’m absolutely recommending this to everyone

Oooh this one had me kicking my feet! Another perfectly scrumptious romantasy from this author! I wasn't quite sure what to expect from a retelling of the classic fairytale 'Rumpelstiltskin', but it was spectacular! No notes, just praises 🤌🏻

These whimsical and intriguing fairytale novellas with a twist by this author are just my favourite! She executes them so well!

I devoured this one and could have easily finished it in one sitting, but I wanted to savour it! I was utterly enraptured!

I always eat up forced proximity through an arranged marriage, and the begrudgingly softening of hearts it always leads to. This pairing was everything! The spice was phenomenal and the praise k*nk oh myyy 🤭

This author's writing and her stories are so beautifully wholesome and enchanting. Every scene is pure magic! She creates the most endearing characters that you're instantly rooting for. Their personalities just shine. They're funny, witty, wholesome, so charismatic, and just wonderful! I loved the friendships and found family and of course the romance.

I also love to see Scottish Gaelic inspiration in a book! It's such a beautiful language, and though I don't speak it, as a scot, it always feels really heartwarming to me that writers are inspired by this wonderful language for their stories; especially in fantastical settings, as my home and its people and lore feel so magical to me. The incorporation of Gaelic inspired language in this book fit the medieval and folklore setting just perfectly- and I just melt for a love confession in another language! 🥹

p.s I adored the introduction to this novella! If you've read 'Curse and Spindle' you're going to love how sweet the beginning of this one is! Yet again, the author had me from page one!

⏳️🍄✨️

Thank you so so much to the author for giving me the opportunity to read this as an arc! As always, this review is voluntary and all opinions are my own!

i enjoyed this novella retelling of rumplestiltskin and can’t wait to read curse & spindle which is set in the same world. straw & gold is an interconnected standalone that follows morella and killian. the dynamic between them reminded me of song of the dark wood and to bleed a crystal bloom, with a naive fmc and a seemly distantly mmc who had their reasons. i have been quite enjoying retellings recently; a way to revisit childhood but with unexpected twists and turns. i do think i would have preferred to read curse & spindle first because i felt like this book could have used a bit more context, which i am sure is present in curse & spindle. however, as a standalone i still felt connected to the characters and was rooting for morella because she was determined and fierce, and could definitely hold her own in a fight! if you’re looking for a short adult fairytale and enjoyed tales of spinning straw into gold when you were younger, this give one a go! thank you to the nerd fam and chelsey for the eARC!

I didn’t know I needed a Rumplestiltskin fantasy romance in my life… but apparently, I absolutely did.

Straw and Gold pulled me in with its lush writing, layered characters, and a story that hit all the right notes of magic, emotion, and a delightful battle of who could be the most stubborn. I adored the bond between the FMC and her brother—“thistle nut” will now forever be an emotional code word in my heart 💛—and I have to give a special shoutout to Fedir, the best friend/captain of the guard with a moral compass of steel and dagger aim so good it deserves its own medal.

The pacing was so immersive I didn’t even realize how deep I was until my Kindle warned me I only had four minutes left. This book is full of quiet sacrifices, fierce loyalty, and characters who grip you from page one.

Highly recommend if you love fairytale retellings with unexpected emotional depth, fierce heroines, and a cast of characters that feel like they’ve been living and battling long before page one.🍂🌰🐑🤗🪽🍄‍🟫

✨Straw & Gold✨

Author: Chelsey Tompkins
Release: August 15, 2025 (my birthday!)
Series: book 2 in the Realms of Revelry Interconnected Standalones

Goodness, I DEVOURED this shorter read in a day, not able to get enough. In this second installment we follow a dual POV, first with our FMC, Morella, the sister of book one’s delightfully winged MMC, and second, our broody and oh so grumpy MMC, Killian.

15 years ago this arranged marriage contract was drawn up, but Morella has yearned for this moment the entire time. She desperately wants to be free, to love, and to be a good wife and queen. But when she shows up, her other half does not reciprocate like she dreamed. However, that does not deter her. While Killian holds some deep secrets and hesitation, Morella makes it her mission to break through his thorny exterior.

Meanwhile, Killian is doing everything he can to keep himself and Morella from knowing each other- despite his deep need to do so- in hopes to protect her from the repercussions of his curse. But as he knows her more, he realizes that she is not only someone who has the potential to break his curse by finding his true name, but changing the world and his life as he’s known it.

SAG is a delicious and spicy Rumpelstiltskin retelling with its own twist. I truly adored our FMC and her kindness and determination. Our tortured MMC is extra broody but what a good teacher he is! 😜 if you need a read to make you swoon, giggle, and simply happy again, this is it!!

Tropes you may find in SAG are shifter fae, arranged marriage, praise kink, forced proximity, he teaches her, good girl, grumpy x sunshine, unique magics, fae bargains, 7 year age gap, medium-high spice, she saves him, wound tending, she soothes his nightmares, and a HEA.

Thank you, Chelsey, for once again allowing me to be an arc reader for you. As usual, I LOVED IT.

ARC Review

Straw & Gold brings us a spicy Rumplestilskin inspired romantasy, where Morella, a Ravenfae princess is arranged to marry King Killian, a Changelingfae, who is determined to end this arrangement. However, determined to get her husband to like her, Morella will stop at nothing to get to know her husband, even if it means making a bargain with him.

This was such a cute short read. I absolutely giggled and blushed throughout the whole story. I loved Morella and her persistence. I strive to be her. Killian is everything you expect from a grumpy mmc, but I adore how he can't help but follow along with Morella.

I loved this story. I think this may be my first Rumplestilskin inspired story I've read. I was surprised how much I loved it and revived my love for the fairytale. I also loved the spice in this! It was just the perfect amount and didn't take from the story.

If you like a short story with a grumpy x sunshine couple, you will love this! Oh and did I mention she has wings?😍

Thank you so much to the author for the ARC!

I didn’t think it was possible for me to like book two more than the first, but here we are! When I heard spicy Rumpelstiltskin retelling, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But I love it! I fell in love with Morella and Killian from page one, tho I will never be able to not see Captain Hook from Once Upon a Time when I picture him. 🤷🏻‍♀️ She’s fierce and determined, he’s broody but an amazing teacher 😏. I love some forced proximity, and this book definitely delivers.

The pacing of this book was so perfect for a novella. And the perfect length to be satisfied while wishing for more. I loved the dual POV and getting to know both characters. And I loved getting to learn some more about the Realm of Revelry. Fedir was definitely a favourite character for me, and I’m hoping for more of him in the future! Especially because I hopefully get more Killian and Morella.

This book was a quick and super fun read, and I highly recommend it for a unique retelling with fantastic characters and spice!

I absolutely loved this return to Revelry! Straw & Gold is a Rumplestiltskin inspired novella that pulls lots of elements from the original story while still making it a fresh read and incorporating more of the lore and world building that the author built in Curse & Spindle.

I giggled at the appearance of the previous couple and enjoyed learning more about the Goddesses and the way that the world is laid out.

Morella is a fire cracker and she very early solidified herself as a strong take-no-crap character while also having very believable flaws. Killian was a dick at first, but you could tell it was going to be a loosing battle once he got out of his own head and really started to learn about his new wife.

In this story you will find:
-Contract weddings
-Learning together 🌶️🌶️🌶️
-Iron deficiencies
-Late night furniture rearrangement
-Forced Proximity

Read this on one sitting - could not put this down. So thankful I met this author and bought this book.

I love a retell and she puts such a unique spin on it. This is author is now an automatic read.

Loved the characters. The FMC absolutely adored her sass and her going after what she wants and wasn’t afraid to express it. Killian - loved him too. He pushes her away but he’s not mean or hateful about it. I loved how this author writes the makes as grumpy but not mean.

So fun to watch them carry out their bargains either each other - her learning his language and him having to kiss her goodnight 😂😍.

The yearning - the tropes - the “She’s my wife!”. Hook line and sinker.

The spice was 👌🏻. Not too much or just thrown in to be there.

This review was one large ramble but I can’t put coherent thoughts together right now😂. Other than I loved it so much and I wish this was a full length book 😭.

Morellas stubbornness and tenacity are so relatable. I love that she speaks her mind and doesn't hold back. I know for a fact I'd be the same way my wedding night if my husband wasn't giving me attention😅

As a 4'11 girly married to a 6'3 guy, thank you for the description of Killian because my husband's legs do indeed look like tree trunks to me.

I really enjoyed this book and recommended this series!!

I enjoyed this story so much! I loved how determined and thoughtful Morella’s character was! She was a feisty mfc! Killian was the perfect broody mmc. I loved his character growth during the story and I loved when he finally let his walls down and we got to see how loving he is! He has a way with words too! Fedir brought some great humor to the story! I loved how he acted as a wingman to get them to open up more to each other! The ending had me on the edge of my seat!

I devoured this book in one sitting. Morella was an amazing female character and I fell for Killian from the start.
This retelling of Rumplestilskin was brilliantly done! I lived for the pining and the attraction he kept trying to push aside and her stubbornness to win his love anyways.
And that ending! I did not see it coming and I loved it so much!

I absolutely devoured this book! I read it in one sitting, I could not put it down. I really love the way that Chelsey can include so much world building, character development and plot into such a short book. It was fast paced but still had so much going on, from the romance to the fantasy aspect to the mystery aspect. I adored our main characters, especially Morella, she was just so sweet and determined. The whole premise of this book is so so interesting and for me it was perfectly executed. There was so much angst and tension between Morella and Killian, I ate it up. I will definitely be reading more from this author!

Thank you to The Nerd Fam & the author for a review copy!

A fun & quick read that’s a spicy fairytale that takes inspiration from the tale of Rumpelstiltskin; a fae princess signed a marriage contract to a fae prince 13 years ago, he thought she’d use the escape clause but she didn’t. Now it’s time to get married & both want something from the other.

I enjoyed reading this & recommend it if you like spice and are looking for something quick!

This was my second Rumpelstiltskin retelling of the year, and it did not disappoint! I’m really loving retellings lately, and I so enjoy seeing each author’s unique take on these stories.

Chelsey Ann Tompkins did a phenomenal job once again of creating real intimacy and relationship building throughout this novella length story. I am in awe of her ability to do all of that in addition to giving us the perfect amount of spice without any of it feeling rushed or forced.

I loved Morella’s determination and persistence throughout the story, and it was delightful to watch Killian’s walls crumble as they spent more time together. I also adored Fedir, and I hope he gets his own novella in the A Realm of Revelry series eventually! It was also such a treat to get to see Seraphine and Korven again in this story!

If you’re looking for a quick and fun fairytale retelling with a grumpy x sunshine couple, a fierce FMC, and characters with a surprising amount of depth for such a short story, then you should absolutely pick this one up. You won’t be disappointed!

Thank you so much to Chelsey Ann Tompkins for the opportunity to ARC read this story! ✨

If you love fairytale retellings/reimaginings, spice & short novellas- this is for you. I devoured this Rumpelstiltskin retelling in less than a day. It is part of an interconnected series of standalones titled, A Realm of Revelry and I was hooked from the first couple chapters!
I loved everything about this one, I loved how our fmc and Ravenfae princess, Morella is so determined and doesn't back down from anything 🙌

And if you want to swoon, our broody mmc Killian is my new favourite. Let me telll you, how he praises her & he teaches her a different language and omg the names he calls herrr make me melt- yet he's also this dismissive, tortuted and broody king. Total grumpy sunshine vibes here & I loved their relationship so much! Oh and the spiceee ah- definitely made me blush, Killian is top tier and if you love praise k!nk tropes like me, readd this 🔥

This was fast paced, had twists, fae, my Gods it was filled with emotion- like I was on the edge of my seat towards the end there 😂 I absolutely adored the side characters too and the banter in this is amazing!

I love this world and I can't wait to read more!! Def recommend this if you want a cute, fun spicy read!

But your kisses, Morella, those I love most. Each day I’ve lied, but each night I’ve been the most selfish of men. Because those are my truth. But I cannot have them. I cannot love you as I want just to lose you to her.”

Straw & Gold is an interconnected standalone apart of A Realm of Revelry. You could read it by itself, but WHY would you? Reading from the beginning is going to give you the best reading experience as you will see characters from earlier on making an appearance. That and it will just make a load more sense with Morella's bargain she makes with Killian. In all honesty, Chelsey had me at "I'm writing a book" but I was also equally as excited about it being a rumple retelling and HE'S GINGER. Does she know my weakness?

Straw & Gold is so beautifully told just as EVERY SINGLE BOOK Chelsey has written and published. I literally had the conversation earlier today that She is going to go places and everyone is going to know her name one day!

This retelling follows Morella and Killian. Morella is bound by a marriage contract to Killian. A man she knows nothing about really, but yet she is excited all the same. He comes off as cold and distant, but it doesn't stop Morella trying to discover the true him. This is the perfect quick read that will leave you feeling so many emotions like adoration, joy, sadness, but most importantly the desire to know what is going to happen next.

My gaze darted to her hand on my arm. “You think you’re weak?”

She took her hand away and I felt the absence of it. “I know I am. I could never fly as long as the others. I could never expand my wings fully.”

She demonstrated, stepping back and spanning her wings across her back. They lifted wobbly, one lower than the other as her face bunched in the effort. “See? They just didn’t grow right or something.”

Well someone bring me the tissues because this is going to result in me forever loving these two. The openness and what's to come.

What you can expect:
📖He Teaches Her
📖She Falls First, He Falls Harder
📖Arranged Marriage
📖Grumpy x Sunshine
📖Chronic Illness Rep
📖Fae Bargains
📖Thistle Nuts
📖Spicy

“You wish me to teach you, Goldling?”

Her fingers brushed closer. “I’ve wished for you to teach me many things, husband. I see now I need to be more direct with what I want from you, and right now, I want you to teach me about this…”

Thank you so much Chelsey for entrusting me with an Arc of Straw & Gold. It was such a privilege to experience and love these characters.

This was something so completely different from what I have read recently. I haven’t read a lot of books lately that take place is completely unique fantasy worlds, so this book was definitely something new for me. I loved that this was a unique take on Rumplestiltskin. Of course, the Rumplestiltskin character is not anything like the original story and I found that the use of the magical realm to explain things was something so different and something that yanked me in. This is a particularly long book. It is fairly short, but it also reads very quick. I was able to devour this book in about a day. It is always difficult to develop a fantasy world in a short book, but I thought this author did a great job. Reading this actually made me want to go back and read the previous book in this series because I really got invested in the characters and knew that some of them had their story told in a previous book. This is one of those books that creates a unique, complex world, that is not so complex that you get lost in it while reading. It was such a fun, entertaining story, that I really want more from this universe.

There were times when my heart went out so much for Morella and there were times where she just made me laugh. She had so much thrown on her from a young age. She was different and considered weak. She was supposed to be the heir to her mother and be the Cursebringer, but her brother took that responsibility so that she didn’t have to worry about not being able to fly for long distance. But she was so determined and stubborn. She refused to take the exit clause. She refused to take her husband’s attempt at dismissing her. She trained and grew stronger and stronger. She really was something else. Killian is one of those characters that I wanted to hate at the beginning, but as his story unfolds, he completely grew on me. He had no choice but to hide things from Morella, even though he didn’t necessarily want to.

It had been a while since I had read a romantasy and I really was a fan of this book. The spice in this book is towards the end mostly because it is a definite slow burn between the two main characters. But towards the end, we finally get some spicy scenes between our main characters and the connection between them blossoms. I thought that this book was something new and different and I flew through this book in no time.

Chelsey Ann Tompkins’ Straw and Gold is a dazzling reimagining that breathes new fire into the threads of classic fae lore. With its blend of courtly intrigue, magical bargains, and a slow-burn romance that smolders into passion, this novel is a feast for fans of fairytale retellings, enemies-to-lovers tension, and stories where names hold power.

At the center is Princess Morella, bound for thirteen years by a marriage contract to King Killian. What might have been a simple political alliance becomes deeply personal—Morella knows Killian’s magic is the only way to save her brother’s beloved human wife. Her decision to honor the contract and enter Killian’s cold, forbidding kingdom is the first of many acts of courage that make her such a magnetic heroine. She is determined, resourceful, and unafraid to spin her own destiny—even when that means spinning literal straw into gold.

Killian, meanwhile, is as enigmatic as he is compelling. Cold, distant, and haunted by secrets, he keeps Morella at arm’s length until the day he discovers her golden-thread magic. What follows is a bargain steeped in intrigue and danger: Morella has three months to uncover his true name. The tension this creates is exquisite—every whispered secret, every guarded look, every heated moment between them is weighted with desire and risk. Their slow transition from wary strangers to partners to lovers is paced beautifully, ensuring readers feel every stolen breath and every ache of longing.

The worldbuilding is lush and layered, from the dark splendor of Killian’s court to the shimmer of magic in every spun thread. Tompkins draws heavily on myth while crafting something wholly original—stories about names, power, and sacrifice woven into a tapestry of family loyalty and personal freedom. The stakes are both intimate and epic: save a brother’s wife, save a kingdom, save a love that could break under the weight of secrets.

What elevates the book beyond a beautiful romance is its thematic richness. It’s a story about bargains, yes, but also about the price of love, the cost of truth, and the courage to fight for both family and desire. The final revelations are gut-punching and deeply satisfying, delivering not just a happily-ever-after but one earned through fire, trust, and sacrifice.

Some names hold power.
Some love stories demand a price.

Morella can't wait to be married, even though she's never met her husband-to-be. Killian, on the other hand, feels nothing but dread. Dread that he only has three months to fulfill a bargain that binds his magic. Otherwise, he'll die. He's resigned to the inevitable when Morella turns his world upside down.

Morella fulfills the marriage contract, hoping for a loving, devoted husband and a way to save her beloved sister-in-law. However, Killian refuses to allow her close because if he does, she will surely die, just as he will if she doesn't figure out his name and yell it from the cliffs as daylight breaks over the land.

Feisty and determined, Morella will not allow Killian to push her away. When he sets her up in a suite across the hall from his, she shows him her strong-willed nature by pulling her heavy trunk across the hallway and into his room, telling him in no uncertain terms that it will now be theirs.

The two strike a bargain of their own. Each day, Morella weaves straw into gold thread and learns the language, hoping to figure out Killian's given name. Each night, he gives her a goodnight kiss, which whispers of a future just out of their grasp.

He teaches her about finding pleasure. 🥵🌶️🫠

She teaches him hope.

Can Morella figure out Killian's true name before they're doomed?

If you like a feisty, determined FMC who knows what she wants and isn't afraid to go after it, and a MMC who fights falling in love because he doesn't want to hurt the FMC, then you'll love this sweet and spicy Rumpelstiltskin retelling.

Straw & Gold is the second novella in the interconnected standalone series A Realm of Revelry. I didn't read A Curse & Spindle (book 1), but I'm looking forward to rectifying that.

"...Give me your fears and I shall soothe them away. Give me your pain and I shall help you heal. Give me your nightmares and I shall weave you new dreams.”

Tropes:

• Grumpy x Sunshine
• Arranged Marriage
• She falls first, he falls harder
• He teaches her
• Praise kink
• Fae Bargains
• Forced proximity
• Chronic Illness Rep

This was my first book from Tompkins, but I've recently discovered my love of fairytale retellings and this one did not disappoint! As someone not entirely familiar with the original Rumpelstiltskin tale (beyond the gold weaving and name-guessing elements), I found Tompkins' take fresh and engaging.

What Worked:
Fast-paced without losing necessary details - The story moves quickly but doesn't feel rushed in terms of world-building. Despite being a shorter novella, the fae world felt well-developed for fantasy readers.
Dual POV - I really enjoyed getting both Morella and Killian's perspectives, which added depth to their relationship development.
Character development - Killian's arc was particularly strong. He wasn't just driven by lust; even when he was afraid to get attached, he remained protective and genuinely wanted Morella to be happy and healthy. Morella is feisty and goes after what she wants, which I loved.
Spicy scenes - Several well-written intimate scenes where he teaches her, perfect for readers who enjoy steam in their fantasy romance.

Minor Issues:
The relationship felt a bit insta-lust at times (he's large, muscled, and handsome - of course she wanted to jump his bones lol)
Killian's tendency to push her away during the three-month timeline caused some frustration as a reader.
The emotional development might have benefited from a full-length novel format to be more fleshed out.

This works as a standalone, but I wish I had read the first book in the series first since it's about her brother.

Bottom Line:
Perfect for readers who enjoy fairytale retellings and short, spicy novellas. Tompkins has definitely earned a spot on my auto-buy list! The pacing was smooth overall, and while I would have loved to see this story expanded into a full-length novel for deeper emotional development, it's a solid 5-star read as is.

Recommended for: Fairytale retelling lovers, fans of fae romance, readers who enjoy dual POV and steamy scenes.

Thank you to Chelsey Ann Tompkins & the Nerd Fam for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

🙌🏼Good grief. I inhaled this book in one sitting and have zero regrets.🙌🏼

This short, punchy read gave me everything I needed. We’ve got dual POV with Morella, our determined and dreamy FMC, and Killian, the emotionally constipated MMC who’s broody enough to darken daylight.

Fifteen years ago, their marriage contract was signed. Morella’s been waiting ever since, basically building a whole fantasy around this moment. She shows up ready to love, lead, and thrive. Killian, on the other hand, acts like she just walked in wearing red flags and holding a cursed sword. Not exactly the romantic welcome she imagined.

Still, she doesn't back down. Morella is relentless in the best way. She wants to be seen, loved, and chosen. And Killian, while dragging around a curse and enough internal guilt to fuel a villain arc, slowly starts to unravel in her presence. He tries to keep his distance, to protect her from the consequences of his secrets. But her softness and strength bulldoze right through his barriers.

This is a spicy Rumpelstiltskin retelling with a fresh twist. There’s no creepy baby bargaining here, just emotional tension, sizzling chemistry, and a slow burn that turns into an inferno. Watching Morella chip away at Killian’s defenses while he teaches her things that absolutely aren't in any royal curriculum was pure serotonin.

Tropes on deck:
•Shifter fae
•Arranged marriage
•Praise kink
•Forced proximity
•“He teaches her”
•Good girl energy
•Grumpy x sunshine
•Unique magic systems
•Fae bargains
•Seven year age gap
•Medium to high spice
•Wound tending
•Nightmare soothing
•She saves him
•Guaranteed HEA

Morella is warmth and grit wrapped in velvet. Killian is a mess of secrets and guilt, but once he starts letting her in, he becomes absolutely feral for her. I had butterflies, full-body laughs, and several moments of unhinged squealing.

Chelsey, thank you for this ARC. I loved every second. My brain is now playing “true name, who dis” on repeat.<\b>
