Wild how much of a marked improvement this volume was from the previous one. The story here felt a lot more clearly thought out and I really enjoyed the different forms of conflict presented here. In this volume, Magda asserts herself a lot more and takes her own steps, not those that the adults are wanting for her. It's a great coming into yourself stretch, and seeing the kids show who they truly are has been great. This volume had a bit of a hunger games vibe with the competition and the way that the youth are inspiring revolution. I also enjoyed the creative places they went to and found myself a lot more invested in the goings on of the characters. I'm excited to see how this series ends. Now the final part of the tournament approaches and we'll have Kourou and Magda vs. Golden boy and Hector. A highlight of this volume was the air whisking moment which was really heartfelt and cool.

Cute! That's not pejorative. It is cute, and fun, and a great way to introduce young readers to critiques of imperialism via a story of a young girl's quest to become a great cook. I love the characters here; Magda and all her competition feel very complex with varied motivations. Looking forward to reading the trilogy's last volume soon.
