Hollow Planet: Book 1

Rate this book
After the death of his beloved father, Daniel’s life has never exactly become that of a typical teenager. He essentially home schooled himself and maintains a full time job at the local store. Additionally, he is forced to raise his younger sister since his mother made her social life a crutch to dealing with the loss of her husband. Daniel would love nothing more than to have a normal teen-age life — and to have his dad back. However, Daniel's despondent life would now become quite peculiar the day he meets a link to his father: a man by the name of Sef.

Sef explains to Daniel the truth behind this world. He warns that Earth is in a downward spiral with an unfavorable ending. Daniel learns he can help save the planet from an impending danger, but only if he picks up where his father left off. Although what he is told all sounds crazy, Daniel realizes this strange encounter is the first time he has felt a rush, felt alive, felt anything at all. It’s a feeling he doesn't want to let go of.

This moment would be the catalyst to Daniel’s life-altering adventure. A journey that will show him a whole other world that society has been ignorant of for years, inherent powers that were always present but never realized, a secret endeavor kept hidden from him by his own father, and an opportunity to save Earth from its imminent downfall. Still, none of this will come to Daniel without some heavy opposition from a small group looking to stop Sef and make Earth’s demise a reality.

Daniel's life changed tremendously one rainy night when he was younger, the night his father died. Now Daniel is 17, finished school early and has his own job. Due is his unemployed mom, Lynda, 90% of the time not being home, he has to take care of his younger sister, Joie.
One day when he is walking to work, these two suspicious men ask him some questions by the lake. Time goes by, suddenly he is put before them again. They tell him that everything that he was taught about the earth was a lie. What the teachers didn't tell them was that there is a whole new world inside of the earth and Daniel has to set everything straight before Oren and his team can stop them.
Daniel is a very level headed, strong kid. When his dad died, he was a toddler so he does remember his voice and a few memories but as the days go by, they start to fade away. I really like Daniel's character, how he was portrayed was definitely the perfect amount. In fact, all the characters were portrayed brilliantly!
Joie is just so cute. She is your average kid, but better. I believe she was very mature for her own age and handled the situation that her and Daniel were in quite well.
Now for Daniel's mom. After her husband died she turned into such a wreck. But I could understand half of the part way she lost it.
The few things that made me give this book a 4 out of 5 stars was the "intermissions". What I mean by intermissions is the parts where nothing is happening. There were quite a few of those, it's okay to have a couple but 5 or 6 just wanted to make me out the book down. Also, the ending was a little cheesy for me. I think it could have been slowed down more descriptive.
Overall, Hollow Planet is an exciting adventure the will keep you reading wanting to know what will happen next and wanting book two in your hands!

I met the author when I bought this book in Chicago in 2016 at a book con event. I judged the book by its cover and it didn’t disappoint. A slow burner, but very well done. I wish there was more.

Hollow Planet is amazing. I instantly fell in love! The writing was great, and I love that the story was fast paced. The metaphors, etc were spot on! Basically, this is one of the best novels I have read. It sheds light on our awful society in the best ways. Everything said was pretty much what I think on a daily basis. My favorite quote from this novel is: “Money equals power, power equals control, control equals security. This bitter equation creates greed and corruption.”
Now on to the characters. Daniel is a perfect character, especially for the situation he is in. Daniel has had a hard life but he was able to handle it and make the best of everything. I look up to Daniel! He is incredible. I know there is a spark between Daniel and Gia but I am glad that there wasn’t any heavy romance in this first novel. Maybe Daniel and Gia’s relationship will develop in book 2? I know Andrew will do what is best for the story. My favorite character is Mr. Harris. He always gave great advice and was extremely inspirational to Daniel, and even me!
Other thoughts? When I began reading this I kept thinking of Journey To The Center Of The Earth. Then about halfway through I realized this is so much more and so much better! This world that Andrew Tolan has created is beautiful.

I liked this book and feel the author has a lot of potential. It has a good solid plot with an imaginative world built into it. While some of the dialogue falls flat, I look forward to seeing Andrew Tolan come into his own as he continues to write the rest of the series.
