It may be Christmas, but for Libby Sarjeant the mysteries don’t take a seasonal sabbatical …Lesley Cookman returns with another instalment of the best-selling Steeple Martin series
It's the run-up to Christmas, Libby Sarjeant and her friend Fran have been invited to stay at grand old Mallowan Manor to investigate some mysterious rumours which are preventing the owner from selling up. A weird cast of characters, including an ageing actress and an enigmatic butler, makes Libby feel like she's ended up in an Agatha Christie plot …
This is a long short story featuring Libby and her friend Fran, and very entertaining. Lesley Cookman has lots of fun with the traditional murder in an isolated country house just before Christmas theme.
This is an entertaining short story in which Libby and Fran, with their partners are invited to stay at Mallowan Manor to see if they cam find out whether the strange noises are a real ghost or whether they are something more earthly. The Manor is owned by Dame Amanda - a well known actor and someone who knew Libby when she was a child.
The house party is ill assorted to say the least and there are serious tensions between Dame Amanda and her relatives some of whom want her to sell the manor and other who think she should keep it. Is there Civil War treasure hidden there or something more sinister? I found this an amusing quick read and I think I shall probably go on to read the rest of the series of books featuring Libby and Fran. I did start reading them a while ago but never read more than two or three.
If you have not come across the Libby Sarjeant mysteries then this would make a good place to start reading them.
This book was enjoyable as a quick read, but the ending was rushed. The mystery was solved in a conversational manner, rather than revealed through characterization/action.
another great book but can't help thinking it would have made a full length book...but as the author has a habit of linking past books to current works i am sure she will think of a way to broaden the story. ..
