Rate this book
In the glittering world of the ton wealth is as important as rank, rank nearly as important as connections. But nothing is as vital to one’s success in Society as having the right ghost. What is fashionable in specters changes almost as often as preferred fabrics and necklines, favored Diamonds of Society and admired Town bucks. Mercury Raine.

Born a penniless orphan, he has made both a name for himself and an enviable fortune. I was completely bewitched by this start to a new series. Sarah Eden is a favorite writer of mine and her attempt at something new, fresh, invigorating, and enticing immediately won me over. I’m SOLD on this whole premise, entirely fascinated by Mercury Raine, and entranced by the plethora of ghosts.

Mercury Raine is an enigma–full of patience, fairness, and exactness. Miss Huddleson is solid and a highly nuanced character. The ghosts? Read it to learn more about them.

I’ve never read anything like this book and the way it embraces both the Regency period and spectral world, resulting in a snappy and spectacular introduction to what is sure to be an innovative and imaginative adventure into the otherworldly society.

How do I describe this delightful little nugget?

It’s like Regency England meets cozy paranormal in a “hey, bestie we’ve all got ghost BBFs attached to us and we can trade them.” Remember being kid and trading marbles and trading cards and all that? It’s like that—with ghosts. 😂

Also, it’s the furthest thing from scary or spooky. All the ghosts are either hilarious or incredibly well-mannered.

And I smell a potential romance on the line between the esteemed ghost broker and his soon-to-be business associate. 👀

Very cute and a fun autumn read!

Mercury Raine: Ghost Broker by Sarah M Eden

Oh wow! Like wow! This was just a taste of what is to come in this amazing new and very uniquely intriguing series by Sarah. I needed to start book 2 immediately after finishing this one, so be sure you hit that preorder button on book 2!
This series is as addicting as Emma M Lion!

Imagine a Regency era where ghosts are all the rage, and certain personality traits of ghosts are the height of fashion!

Enter Mercury Raine, a professional and premier ghost broker; he trades ghosts, of which he has many. When one ghost is traded to someone, he acquires the ghost of the person wanting to trade. If you do not have any ghosts, you cannot acquire any.
What a fascinating world Sarah has built within the Regency era England!

Ghost Broker is filled with mystery, intrigue, and not quite romance. But read on, dear souls! Read on! Look for book 2 releasing October 21 and more to come after!

What a delightful introduction to a new series by one of my favorite historical authors! Mercury Raine: Ghost Broker whisks readers into a Regency world where wealth, rank, and reputation depend not just on fashion or family connections—but on the ghosts one keeps. It’s a brilliant twist on the ton’s obsession with appearances.

Mercury Raine is such an intriguing character. He’s gone from penniless orphan to England’s most sought-after ghost broker, managing the supernatural side of Society with sharp wit and quiet sophistication. But when Miss Huddleston shows up at his estate with her overbearing mother and a secret that could ruin everything, his carefully ordered world starts to unravel in the best way.

This did not feel like a novella! It was a fun read, and I can't wait for the next books! If you enjoy a dash of the supernatural mixed with Regency charm, this one’s an absolute treat.

Absolutely delightful! A sweet, historical setting with a paranormal twist that is just as creative as it is fun! AND, it is a fabulously wonderful departure from the normal, dark, war and angst ridden fantasy fair we all may love but need a break from now and then. My only complaint is that, as a serial, the length is short so we’ve only had time to introduce and enjoy the engaging characters, plus uncover the overall storyline and conflict. Luckily the next installment in the trilogy has published so off to further indulge!

I thought this was be a fun read for October and leading up to Halloween! I enjoyed the regency setting with ghosts! Fun, original storyline and likable characters. Dash of mystery and left me wanting to read more!

I didn't realize when I started this that it was a novella, I was flying along and then realized it was almost over! Luckily the next book is coming out soon and I can jump back into the story. I thought this was a good set up and I'm looking forward to more.

“Mercury Raine had been born with neither rank nor
wealth, but in a world in which ghosts were nearly as valuable, it wasn’t truly a shock that he had made himself an inarguably successful.”

-My friends, Mercury Raine: Ghost Broker, is such a unique, and dear story not to miss. It is beautifully and precisely weaved with Regency era elegance and supernatural intrigue. I loved that the rules from the start are clearly presented and flowed it such a way, there is no confusion. It is delightfully witty, spooky, mysterious, and is a quick but delightful read. By the end, it will have you craving more to come in this dear series. I throughly enjoyed how original, fresh, and unique this story plot is and with dear characters. I loved England’s most sought-after ghost broker, character, Mercury Raine. Knowing he was born a penniless orphan but, has made both a name for himself and an enviable fortune was inspiring. There is even more to him that I am curious about. Oh my, I can’t wait for more clues to unfold and where this series will take me. Truly, Mercury Raine: Ghost Broker, is absolutely a wonderfully fun story worth the charming read!🙌🏻📚✨

"Mercury Raine: Ghost Broker" by Sarah Eden is the first installment in the “Mercury Raine” novellas. It is so witty, clever, and fun! This novella is short, fun and will leave you smiling. Ms. Eden’s writing is wonderful. "Mercury Raine: Ghost Broker" is perfect for spooky season, with its cast of benign ghosts and Mercury, the resident Ghost Broker. I loved getting to know the different ghosts and their personalities. The writing reminded me of a P.G. Wodehouse novel. I love that it has secrets and the possibility of romance. I do not want to give a lot away, but I will let you read this delightful novella for yourself. I definitely recommend this hilarious novella that was quick, easy to read and left me wanting more!

Content: I give this a G rating. Some examples of the content: ghosts.

The Brief: Mercury Raine is a ghost broker who connects society to the ghost who will bring the most success. When Mrs. and Miss Huddleston becomes his newest clients they bring unexpected adventure.

The Debrief: Ok. This reads like your favorite addicting BBC series that you’re going to obsess over. The whimsical world uniquely unfolds in an unexpected and natural way. So many fun characters and ghosts that I need to know more about immediately. And a hint of a future romantic connection? Please yes. Snappy writing and the start to something fantastic!

The Rhyme: Mercury is the ghost broker everyone wants to hire. When Miss Huddleston’s arrival has him protecting his secrets will things turn dire?

This is not a scary book because ghosts are fashionable and part of society. Highly recommend this novella!

✨ What if your entire social standing depended on the ghost at your side? 👻 That’s the wildly clever twist Sarah M. Eden serves up in 𝙈𝙚𝙧𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙮 𝙍𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙚: 𝙂𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝘽𝙧𝙤𝙠𝙚𝙧—a Regency romp of tailcoats, ballgowns, & the most fabulously awkward specters you’ll ever meet. Fresh, funny, & delightfully off-beat, it’s part historical romance, part supernatural mystery, & all kinds of addictive.

⭐ WHAT I LOVED
• 👻 Ghosts with personality — not moaning wraiths; quirks, grudges, & fashion sense
• 💼 The ghost-broker concept — “trading” ghosts to match social status = brilliantly imaginative
• 🎩 Mercury Raine’s swagger — charming, mysterious, with a past you know will unfold
• 🧵 Regency worldbuilding done right — social mores, manners, & ghostly politics blend seamlessly
• 🗝️ Secrets & intrigue — layered surprises even in a novella
• 😆 Witty banter & laugh-out-loud moments
• 💖 Slow-burn romance tension — Mercury & Miss Huddleston simmer nicely
• 🔄 Pacing & structure — clean flow, no clunky info dumps

🔦 TOP MOMENTS (without spoilers)
• 👻 A ghost drops a revelation you think Mercury is hiding
• 🎭 A society soirée where the wrong specter = the wrong reputation
• 🎲 A wager/trade that genuinely spikes the heartbeat
• 🌙 A dead-of-night confrontation — tense without cheap scares
• 🔑 A small-but-satisfying final reveal that reframes what you know

💭 FINAL THOUGHTS
This novella is a gem—short, but it sparkles. It reads like a bold opening act to a series I’m ready to binge. Eden balances worldbuilding, character, & mystery with grace, never letting the story drag. If you love historical romance with a paranormal twist—or just want something clever & fresh to devour in one sitting—this is it.

I received a copy of this book from the author. A positive review was not required. All thoughts are my own.

Holy freaking amazing audiobook!! I seriously could not get enough of this book. I listened so quickly, and immediately wanted to get the next one. (Why do we have to wait for the second audio to come out?!?! Haha).
Jake Stormoen was absolutely mesmerizing. There was so many different voices he had to perform, and they were so well done. He had so many different accents, men and women, different ages… it was so much fun. I LOVED it.
The storyline is so unique and fun. It was perfect for the month of October to read a (not scary😂) Ghost story. The personalities of the different ghosts made such exciting side characters, that really helped build so much dynamic.

I cannot wait to see what happens in book 2. This book is one hundred percent a must read, and I highly recommend it.

Thank you to the author for an advance copy. All opinions are my own.

Intriguing Premise, but Too Short to Truly Deliver

To start with, this feels more like a novella than a full novel—at just over 100 pages, it reads more like a prequel or an introduction to a larger series. The premise is fascinating: a Regency world where everyone is born with ghosts attached to them, and one of those ghosts can help make you famous. It’s a strange and intriguing concept, and quite a departure from the sort of stories Sarah Eden usually tells.

That said, the world-building felt limited. There are hints of a much larger, layered society, but we never get to see it fully realised. The short length works against it, leaving too many gaps and too little development. It’s hard to get a sense of the world—or even the characters. In fact, I’m not entirely sure who the real protagonist is meant to be, since the main character barely interacts with anyone, and there’s little opportunity to connect with her or understand her motivations.

The ending also felt a bit far-fetched. The idea that she could simply hide, have her mother accept that no one knew anything, and then reappear without anyone noticing didn’t ring true. It felt too neat, especially for a story that otherwise seemed to be setting up something darker and more mysterious.

Still, there’s an interesting spark at the core of the concept, and enough curiosity to make me want to see where the next book takes it—especially since it’s available through Kindle Unlimited. Overall, this is an intriguing but uneven start, more of a sketch of an idea than a fully fleshed-out story. A creative premise that shows potential, but one that leaves you wishing for more depth and direction.

This quick read novella was so much fun. I loved getting to know Mercury Raine and some of his ghosts! The mystery that is woven into the story was perfect. The story ended on such a perfect note that when I turned the page and read, "The Adventure continues with Mercury Raine: A Whisper in the Wind" I groaned out loud because I was not ready for the story to end.

Luckily, the next installment of this fun story comes soon, so you won't have to wait long!

Fresh. Captivating. Bingeable. Heartwarming. This story was everything I was craving and more! With plenty of loveable and quirky ghosts, easy-to-pick-up ghost broker lore, and lots of mystery, I loved every page.

If you’ve read the Dread Penny Society series, this was a cross between the short penny dreadfuls interspersed throughout and the full length novels, with the addition of some ghostly companions. I loved the whole concept of the ghost broker and how it fit in seamlessly with London society in the Regency period. The ghostly characters were some of my favorites, and Mercury’s protectiveness of them was so endearing. These aren’t creepy ghosts; rather, they’re additional family members with quirky personalities and hallmark attributes that make each ghost seem so individual. I don’t want to give away too much because I feel like this is a book best read blind, but suffice it to say that this series will be a constant unfolding of secrets, curiosities, and mysteries, with a possible slow burn romance in the future!

This first installment had a satisfying conclusion but still left me with lots of unanswered questions and an insatiable urge to start the next one! I was lucky to have the second on hand and finished it basically the same day. Highly recommend!

Bravo! What an exciting start to a new series! I was absolutely floored by Mercury Raine: Ghost Broker! It’s such a unique premise & the audiobook version narrated by Jake Stormoen is an absolute must listen! With fun spooky vibes, delightful ghosts with very distinct personalities, an intriguing mystery, & a hint of romance, this story grabbed hold & didn’t let go! Now I need the second book in the series.

Mercury Raine, orphan turned successful ghost broker, built his fortune by trading ghosts, of which he has many. In this Regency England, the Ton requires only the most fashionable ghosts, & Mr. Raine is the man to provide them. The caveat is that one must have a ghost with which to trade. If one is not born with a ghost, one cannot acquire one.

When Miss Huddleston & her overbearing mother arrive on Mercury’s doorstep looking for a trade, his world is thrown into chaos. The ghost Miss Huddleston wants to trade knows secrets about Mercury Raine’s past… Secrets he desperately wants to learn. But, Miss Huddleston has a secret of her own & their trade is made all the more complicated by it. Can Mercury & Miss Huddleston work together to trade the ghost he fiercely desires & make her season a fashionable success? Only time will tell.

I absolutely adored this story! The intriguing story immediately pulled me in & I’m loving the world that Sarah M. Eden created. I can’t wait to find out what happens next. Mercury’s wit & charming personality especially as he interacts with his ghosts had me grinning throughout. Miss Huddleston is full of curiosity & seems an equal match to Mercury. I’m excited to see if those sparks between them turn into something more.

The audiobook version is fantastic! Jake Stormoen does a brilliant job bringing all these characters to life. It was a joy to listen to his narration. The emotion & charming humor were delightful & I can’t wait to listen to the next book.

Highest of recommendations! Just a note to sensitive readers. This is a clean, fun, humorous, spooky story with no gore or occult mentions, only a ghost who occasionally likes to take his head off (no gory details). I received an advanced listener copy with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are my own & provided voluntarily.

Content:

Profanity: None.

Violence: None.

Sexual: Mild-barely there. There is a matchmaking mother afoot, and an interested suitor, but nothing happens except a dance or two.

Oh my goodness.

This book tickled me to death! And not just because it's full of ghosts. (But that did help my enjoyment).

I love a good ghost story that doesn't devolve into horror and gore. This is a fantastic and whimsical short novel about a man who trades ghosts for a living to the fashionable nobility.

Mercury Raine has made a good living by trading ghost attachments so those of the ton can have the most fashionable ghosts as their companions for each season. Last season's emotional ghosts are no longer in vogue, so this story starts with two clients wishing to make a trade so as to not be shunned for their lack of the newly fashionable 'judgmental' ghost.

The problem is, Mercury has a secret. A possible life-destroying secret, and one of the clients that just walked brought with them the potential to blow-up his entire enterprise. He has to make a specific trade at all cost...or else.

Mercury is surrounded by ghosts, and they are all spunky and fun. I was reminded of the TV series "Ghosts", but a clean version! I WAS SO HAPPY. I stopped watching that show pretty quick because of...moral issues. Mercury has multiple ghostly attachments, including a butler, a young boy, and a teenage girl who is like his sister, as well as a decapitated captain, a prima-donna that sings horrible arias at random moments, and many others. It is a BLAST.

I am so excited for this series! It is just down my alley! I don't know how many books there will be, but I'm looking forward to all of it. There was a mystery, a hint at a future romance, ghosts galore that are simply hilarious, and the world-building of how the ghost exchanging happens is fascinating.

Truly, I am giddy. Waiting a couple weeks for book two is going to feel sooooo long! (I'm already eyeing the audiobook so I can re-read it before book two and get that 'new' feeling again in some form).

This is the perfect fun read for the season! (I mean fall, not the London one...wink wink)

AUDIOBOOK

Jake Stormoen does a fun job narrating this quick first book in the series (the audio clocks in at 2h 23m). Narration is in an American accent while he does a fun job of using different accents for the dialogue. He does a fun Irish accent as well as Scottish brogue. I told myself I was going to wait longer to listen, (so I'm closer to book 2 release) but I just couldn't! Now I'm reading the book aloud to my Mom, so there's another endorsement for how fun this book is; I keep revisiting it with happy relish.

‘Mercury Raine had been born with neither rank nor wealth, but in a world in which ghosts were nearly as valuable, it wasn’t truly a shock that he had made himself an unarguable success.’

In the glittering world of the ton, success depends on wealth, rank, connections—and having the right ghost. Mercury Raine has built his fortune as England’s most sought-after ghost broker, but when the intriguing Miss Huddleston arrives on his doorstep with secrets that could ruin everything he’s built, his carefully constructed world begins to unravel. What follows is a captivating mix of mystery, romance, and just the right touch of gothic atmosphere.

The caps lock is coming out for this book, friends!!! I LOOOOVED THIS BOOK! It’s clever, creative, and completely unlike anything I’ve read lately. The plot kept me guessing, the atmosphere was the perfect fall mood, and I absolutely cannot wait for book 2.

If you’re looking for something unique for your autumn TBR—something that blends Regency charm with a ghostly twist—Mercury Raine: Ghost Broker by Sarah M. Eden is IT.

Trust me, you’ll binge this one in a day and immediately wish for more. The good news? The next book releases soon! 🙌

Absolutely brilliant!

I want to be careful for fear of giving too much away about this novella because you need to experience this whole new world of ghost brokers and fashionable specters for yourself. This book is a captivating blend of Regency era elegance and supernatural intrigue and truly unlike anything I have ever read!

I appreciated how clearly the world and its rules were laid out. There was no info-dumping, and all my questions were answered naturally in the flow of the story. Even with a large cast of characters (including some entertaining ghosts!) they were introduced in a way that made it easy to keep track of who was who. Mercury Raine, a charming man with a mysterious past, is matched perfectly with the witty and unflappable Miss Huddleston, and I'm already swooning over the subtle hints of a possible romance between them!

Richly imaginative and completely addictive, this is a must read for fans of historical romance looking for something fresh, clever, and wholly satisfying! This is the first book in a brand new series and I cannot wait for the story to continue in book two!

I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

Mercury Rain - Ghost Broker
This book is such a refreshing and imaginative ride! Sarah M. Eden has created a world that feels totally unique! Ghost brokers?! Who knew! With mysterious spirits, secrets, and a man who is just as clever as he is haunted (literally and figuratively)!
Mercury Raine is juggling ghostly negotiations, trying to keep his own past buried, but also at the same time trying to learn more about where he came from. The story blends mystery, humor, and sweetness in a way that’s super engaging and easy to binge! Which is so easy to do since it's a novella!
The ghosts themselves are so full of personality! Some mischievous, some mysterious, and all adding so much charm! If you’re looking for something different, witty, and full of intrigue, this one's a perfect October read, or listen! (The narrator on the audiobook is FANTASTIC!) !...
And even better, the second one will be released soon!
Thanks so much to the publisher and Sarah for the advanced copy of this book! All opinions are my own!

What a creative and unique story. I enjoyed this amazing novella so much. As soon as I finished I wanted to jump right into book two!

I really love Mercury Raine, he is a very intriguing character! I can’t wait to discover more of his secrets! He is a ghost broker in Regency England. The ghost aspect to this story is fascinating! What an imaginative and enthralling world Sarah M. Eden has created! There are others characters that I love in this story too, and a lot of them are ghosts!

The idea of ghosts being anchored to a person, with the ability to trade them in society to fit what is fashionable at the time is so interesting.

Sarah wrote this novella beautifully. There is so much packed into it, and this book explains everything so well. Sarah has created a whole new world that I cannot wait to get lost in.

This is the perfect fall read! It’s not necessarily spooky, but there is this great atmospheric setting and feel to it! This is a new and exciting series that I can’t wait to keep reading!

This book by Sarah Eden is one of the most unique books I've ever read. I loved every bit of it!

Mercury Raine is a ghost broker. He trades ghosts with those around him who want a different ghost for whatever reason they want to trade. I loved the way he had secrets. There are things about his past that even he doesn't know. And I'm definitely intrigued about that. I NEED to know more!

Mercury Raine's ghosts were intriguing as well. They all had their own very distinct personalities that made the story more fun. I can't wait to see how they play into the story in the next book.

One more thing to love about this one is that it's a super quick read. I didn't want to stop until I was finished. I'm really glad that the second book will be out so quickly so that I can find out what happens next.

This book is the perfect read for Spooky Time!

This was such a fun story! Perfect for a fall read, I loved how original and entertaining this novella was. After listening to this first installment, I am hooked and cannot wait to read more, especially after the forbidding and intriguing ending that has me fully invested in Mercury Raine and all these ghosts. It’s the perfect cute ghost story and I am here for it.

Jake Stormoen should narrate way more books because I loved his performance with this story! The way he did the different accents and personalities made the audiobook a blast to listen to and I highly recommend consuming this story via the audiobook version.

I was gifted a copy of this audiobook. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I truly enjoyed listening to this and am excited for more. The story was witty and original with a great cast of characters and setting already.

This book marks the start of an exciting new series, and you want to start now! Set in a mysterious Regency-era world where ghosts can be exchanged, Mercury Raine: The Ghost Broker is an incredibly creative and one-of-a-kind story.
Mercury Raine himself is the best in the business, a skilled and intriguing ghost broker. But when a young woman and her mother arrive at his home to exchange a ghost, he begins to suspect that this encounter might reveal long-buried secrets about his past... and perhaps stir a few unexpected feelings in his heart.
The audiobook, narrated by none other than Jake Stormoen, is absolutely fantastic. His performance brings the characters to life...the voices are incredible!
This story hooked me from the start. It's quick, clever, and captivating. I'll be reading every single one in this series. I can't wait to see what comes next!

I was hesitant with this because I don't like anything that could be spooky. But I was pleasantly surprised! This book was so fun and original. I love the regency gothic vibes, and the idea of fashionable ghost companions. Mercury easily becomes someone you love and know to be a good person who is running from a hard past. He is a self-made man doing is best to be honest but having to keep secrets in order to keep himself safe. I appreciate the clearly set rules of trading ghosts, and how quickly and clearly you come to understand all of it. I love Mercury's 3 originary ghosts the best.

I don't want to give too much away, but if you are on the fence about this book, give it a try! Particularly the audiobook! Jake Stormoen is brilliant with the different voices. I hope you love it as much as I do!

“The solutions to the most complicated problems, are usually the ones most worth finding.”

Spooky, charming, and twisty. I am loving this short little series. This novella feels like stepping into the haunted mansion with all the charming characters and ghosts. I can’t wait to hear what happens next!

Mercury is such a mysterious character. I love how he has to figure himself out right along with us. The mystery is making this story so exciting! I love it!

I also love Miss Huddleston and her charm. A demure, mysterious leading lady makes this the perfect autumn novella!

I can’t wait for all the twists and turns!

How intriguing. This is a quirky and incredibly unique story, the first installment of a new Sarah Eden series, one that causes me to be yet further amazed at Eden’s creativity.

In this new world, ghosts are common place and also attached to a human. Mercury Raine is a broker of said ghosts, able to facilitate the swapping of a ghost between himself and another person. This first book sets the stage and also hints at many secrets and mysteries yet to be uncovered. My curiosity is fully piqued, and I must go on.

Content:
There is no foul language, sex, or violence. As of yet, there is no romance at all. There is no mention of faith or God. There are ghosts.
