Her goal as a teacher is to share her love of reading and writing, so that the students may have a chance of unlocking the wonderful world of imagination through text. One day she assigned a writing piece that involved the students creating their own super power. This was a huge hit! Katie would hear the students talking about super powers at lunch, at the water fountain, coming into hang up their backpacks, and so on, and so on. That's when it hit her like a ton of bricks... Super heroes! Kids love them, and they want to be them. When this concept crept into her brain, it settled down and became a permanent resident.Katie dreamed about super heroes, and nine out of ten times they would awaken her at three in the morning. They would not vacate her imagination until she was upstairs on her laptop typing away. Katie presented her new found thought to her class, and they loved it.
She currently lives on a farm in southeast Colorado with her husband, her two children, and their bulldog Mary.

Synopsis- 13-year-old Alex Tice didn’t know what to think when two government officials came to his house and one of them telepathically talked to him – communicated just by thinking! The other one seemed to brain-wash his parents. Apparently, Alex is a “gifted” individual – he has a genetic mutation (that usually skips a generation) that causes the mutated being to have superpowers. All superpowers are charted and numbered. Alex has a unique power – he can absorb others’ powers if he is in close proximity to the other “superhero.” Because of this, he gets taken to a government-run camp for other nearby powered beings. He makes new friends there and quickly learns to use his power.
What I Thought- This was an amazing book! I love how it clearly explains how people get their powers and sets up the story perfectly. I like the cover a lot too, but I don’t like how Alex looks more like 9, 13. Alex is a great main character who you come to care for. While the characters are 13+, the story is completely appropriate for younger readers and I think kids 8+ will totally get into the story. Ms. Smotherman has written a fun and adventurous story about a fantastic group of superpowered teens saving the world. There were some well-executed plot twists and turns. The book is a quick read, but a good one. It is perfect for reluctant readers that like superheroes! This is another example of a very well edited and thought out self-published book.

What a fantastic children's adventure! The characters in this book were so fun to read about and their superpowers are all freshly unique, a huge change from many other books with superheroes. My nephew and niece adored this book and they even pretended to be the characters in this book, which speaks volumes. This was a very interesting and enjoyable read that not only kids can enjoy but adults, as well...at least the ones that are still young at heart :-)

This was a really good book. The day I read this I could not put it down. When I read it, it seemed liked Alex was telling it.I could really picture it in my mind easily. It was really creative and I can't wait to read her next book.

I loved this book!! Its really for youth but it will hold you from the start and not let you go! Alex has just turned 13 and was on his way to school when a knock came at the door. When his parents opened the strangest thing happened the man had done mind control on his parents and the woman was talking in his mind. Alex learned then that he was special. They took him to a camp for teenagers with super powers the only thing is they couldn't figure out his power. Until he started doing the same power as others around him he was able to take in others powers. Everything was going great till him and his friends was kidnapped at the Halloween dance. Now they have to save everyone from this evil man. Will they be able to?? This book is so unique I loved it. I give this a 5 fang review. Reviewer for PRAATR.

Katie Smotherman has succeeded in writing a fun book young readers will love to read. She manages to keep us on the edge of our seats wondering what's going to happen next. The characters are fun and parents will appreciate their positive interactions. The plot is well thought out and readers will be anxious for the next book!

The cover caught my attention, being a geeky superhero fan I knew I would enjoy reading this story to the twins. My nieces enjoyed the fast and exciting pace of the book. They quickly joined Camp Powers in their imagination, choosing which power they would have. It didn't take long to finish, but the story was satisfying.
Alex is a very positive and happy boy who has to learn about his power. He's taken to a camp where other children are as gifted as he is. Unlike other superhero books that follow the evil plans at the same time, Alex has no worries for long and can play and feel safe with his friends, until the end when the villain shows up with his master plan. Alex must save the world. He also has to be very brave with the outcome of his actions.

This is one of the best super powers book that I have read in a long time. It's fun, action packed, romantic, and humorous. Kind of reminded me a bit of the "Lightning Thief".

While writing this book, my mind kept wondering to those young boys that have a hard time sitting down and reading. I tried to incorporate enough action and adventure that would keep their interest, but also that it was a clean read free of profanity and romantic relationships. When I read this book for the first time to my 3rd graders, they loved it! It was their encouragement that made me take the leap of publishing my first children's superhero novel. This novel has a lexile of 830 and is intended for readers in grades 3rd-8th. I really hope you or a child you know enjoys Alex's story, and maybe it will inspire the love of reading for that one kid that just hasn't found it yet. It’s Alex’s thirteenth birthday. His parents get him all kinds of great things except the one thing he really wants. That one wish is to be a super – hero! There is a knock at the door and all three answer it. Outside, are two mysterious people. What do they want? The strange man puts Alex’s parents in a trance while the lady talks to Alex with her mind.
She tells Alex that he IS a super – hero and he has to come with them to learn what his super powers are. They go to a camp where everyone goes on their thirteenth birthday to learn how to use their super powers.
I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it for your home library. Any middle reader will enjoy the exploits of Alex the Super – Hero and his friends saving the world!

April 3, 2016I've almost never before put a book down on page two. I'm writing this as a "heads up" to other readers. If nonsensical paragraphing bothers you, don't read this. If you have issues with incomprehensible dialogue or unrecognizable grammar, don't read this.
