USA Today Bestselling Author Magdalena Scott invites you to… “Come to Serendipity, and believe in the magic of Love.”
Melissa is moving back to Serendipity, Indiana to raise her young son and run her new business in spite of her own painful childhood, and the fact that the man who broke her heart years ago still lives in their hometown.
With his dad's death, the work of the family Christmas tree farm has fallen to Jim Standish. But how can he hold everything together for the sake of his grieving family, when his own secrets are pulling him apart?
When a new tragedy puts Melissa and her son in closer contact with the Standish family, ignoring the past is no longer an option. Everyone involved will have to move forward--but how?
This is a wholesome, heartwarming story about second chances: facing difficulties of the past and not only moving on, but becoming stronger because of them. It's about "coincidences" in life that may be more than that. A sweet little boy, and a delightful touch of Christmas magic make Small Town Christmas a story that ends on a sigh!
If we haven’t met before, here’s the skinny on me:
USA Today Bestselling Author Magdalena Scott writes sweet romance and romantic women’s fiction. A lifelong resident of Small Town America, she invites readers into her world to find out what’s hidden just below the surface of those tiny dots barely visible on the map.
Romance, mystery, and the journey to be one’s best self are all part of a day in her neighborhood. Readers have commented that they’d like to move to the imaginary towns Magdalena writes about, which she takes as high praise indeed.
Magdalena is a practicing minimalist, having downsized from a 3,000 square foot house to a studio apartment, where her Giant Closet continues to resist taming. When not writing at home or spending time with family and friends, she loves to travel–carry-on baggage only–and is always pleasantly surprised at the kindness of strangers.
Unfortunately, this Christmas novella didn't work for me at all. The story didn't seem to unfold naturally to me. Instead, I felt like I was getting fed bits of information here while the main character told us about her daily life in Serendipity in what felt almost like point form. There with nothing around it to really allow me to immerse myself into to the story.
In my opinion, Jim was not a lovable character. He was kind of a selfish jerk with not many redeemable characteristics. And the plot twist that was thrown in there was delivered in such a silly way that I just couldn't buy into it.
I don’t like to write bad reviews. I know how hard authors work on their books and I respect that. But this book just didn’t do it for me.
In the beginning I was leaning towards a 3 star rating, but then the author threw in a twist towards the end of the book. One that just didn’t sit right with me and the more I thought about it the more it bugged me.
I was looking for a sweet winter romance and in my opinion, there’s not a lot of that in this book. I felt like the book dealt a lot more with the Standish family trying to keep their Christmas tree farm running and the difficulties that they were facing than it did with Melissa and Jim working through their troubled past. We are reminded more than once what a jerk Jim was when he dumped Melissa during their senior year of high school and broke her heart. Yet, there isn’t a lot of working through their past and rekindling the romance they once had. In fact, they spend a good part of the book avoiding each other.
Then we get to the twist. It felt like this was supposed to be a big deal, yet no one seemed shocked or surprised by it. Melissa and Jim both took it in stride like it was no big deal… REALLY?!
I guess I’d have to say that my favorite thing about this book was Melissa’s 4 year old son. He was the one thing about the book that made me smile.
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!
This is where I get on my soap box and talk about the twist and what bothered me about it.
Melissa and Jim haven’t seen each other in 20 years. 5 years before the story takes place Melissa decides to get pregnant using a sperm donor. At the same time Jim and his then wife are also trying to get pregnant, but haven’t had any luck and end up at a fertility clinic. Turns out Jim’s wife doesn’t really want to have a kid, so she lies and sells Jim’s sperm to a sperm bank, without him knowing about it. Now, magically 5 years later one of Melissa’s friends decides that Jim must be the father of Melissa child. I think this is where the author was hoping for the sweet awww moment. It didn’t happen for me for more than one reason.
As someone that has run the infertility gauntlet the author’s oversimplification of things bugged me. She used the term in vetro multiple times when she was actually describing artificial insemination. For people that have never had to deal with infertility this might seem like no big deal, but they are in fact VERY different things. And to suggest that Jim’s wife was able to sell his sperm without his knowledge portrays the fertility clinic in a bad way. Suggesting that they would do such a thing really rubbed me the wrong way.
I’m sorry if this seems a bit harsh, but having gone through the hell that is infertility, I was very upset to see it passed off as something that could be so easily manipulated into a wife’s way of getting back at her husband for not loving her the way she felt he should.
I feel it would have been much better if Jim’s wife had walked out on him during treatment, but after he had supplied his donation and then he decided to donate it himself to help make someone else dream of becoming a parent come true. I think that would have been a better explanation for how he ended up being the father of Melissa’s child. And added a sweet touch to the story.
And now I climb back down off of my soap box. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
The cover attracted me to this novel - its a beautiful cover and I was looking forward to a 'magical' story with a 'delightful touch of Christmas magic' but I had to give up on this when Jim tells Mel: 'I was falling in love with you again.I thought - I thought we had a chance this time. That our lives were headed in the same direction at last.'
Up to that point there had been (to me at any rate) NO emotional connection whatsoever between Jim and Mel. He was the guy who dumped her by phone years ago. They had hardly interacted either. She came across as having nothing but contempt for him so where did the sudden 'falling in love' come from? It made no sense to me at all.
The writing was very clunky with far too much emphasis on the son who took over the whole story at times. I dont mind having small children in a story, but my word Matthew got on my nerves at time. And Mel came across as a pretty inept mother.
A few niggles:
In chapter 1 Matthew wakes up and goes into Mel's room. It's morning. He is something like 3 or 4 years old.
What does Mel do? She puts him back in his own bed and he falls asleep!!!
REALLY?? Get real. this isnt the middle of the night - Mel is about to have a shower. He would have been raring to go, not willing to fall asleep again!!
And this: (the end of Chapter Four has Mel watching as Matthew is driven away to be looked after by Lillian.)
Chapter 5 starts: Weeks later I turned off the state highway onto Tree Farm to retrieve my son. WHAT? WHAT?? WEEKS LATER??? What HAS this woman been doing!!!
The time line is all over the place. I don't know whether we are in November or December and if someone is opening a Christmas Shop in a week or so then I doubt they would be ordering goods to 'arrive soon' - they would have got them in stock already.
I also found it very irritating not to have a Table of Contents.
Melissa moves back to her old hometown with her son and buys the house in which she got dumped after prom. (Don't ask, it made sense to her, that's all that matters.) She hangs out with a friendly family that owns a struggling Christmas tree farm and meets the ex boyfriend from the high school again. Things get sort of resolved between them without trying, then they solve the problems of the Christmas tree farm by taking on more work and making expensive investments, and then there is an awfully big coincidinky involving the child.
This was a short, pleasant read although I found the end difficult to believe. I get Christmas magic and all that but this just seemed too far fetched. I also wasn't completely sold on Jim as the hero. He did nothing to endear me to him. Truthfully, he came off as rather selfish, only thinking about himself. I enjoyed the small town and Melissa's coming back to the place where she grew up. I also liked the close friends and the way they've always kept in touch.
I just love Christmas books and this one is no exception. Its another awesome book by Magdalena Scott that will hold your interest from the first page to the end. A must read for any romance reader.
I liked this story in a lot of ways - good dialogue, good pacing and I wanted to see how things turned out. The boy Matthew (and I often don't like when a child is a big factor in a romance) was great. But I had three major problems with this book the first one was with why she's angry with Jim for dumping her and two issues related to the ending. Also be prepared for a paranormal element that I didn't expect and it is not apparent from the description of the book. Knowing this beforehand I might have been a little more accepting of the way the narrative went.
SPOILERS!!!!! 1. You learn relatively early on that Jim basically dumps her for another girl but it was completely ridiculous to me that much of the focus was "I did it for your own good if I hadn't dumped you then you wouldn't be this self-sufficient person you are today." Kind of glossed over (his perspective) that he went after a prettier woman and wasn't ready to have a long-term commitment at that point in time because he was just 18. And if The author had just stuck with those last two points it wouldn't have bothered me so much. Plus the fact that Mel just basically rationalizes and accepts what he says.
2. I had a really REALLY hard time accepting that she has Matthew from a sperm donor and then, just miraculously coincidental that Jim donated sperm at the same time and so obviously it must be his kid. Now you might be able to forgive this when you read the final pages of the story and there is suddenly a paranormal aspect to the narrative. But it just seemed far fetched to me.
3. My biggest issue and would made me rate this a three was the ending of the story. It suddenly had a paranormal aspect that wasn't a surprise just more that it came out of nowhere and so I didn't by into it. Yes, in the beginning you get this talk about coincidence and that maybe it's fate but it didn't prepare me for the direction the story went. And then after this revelation that to me just didn't really have a foundation, the story just ends. Based on the descriptions of the next books in the series it just seems like we're going to be left with this ending and no further explanation, which would be more frustrating.
I did enjoy her writing style so I think I would try another book from her. I might try another in this series when it comes out, to see how things turn out.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was this was the next to last book in The Sweet Christmas Kisses bundle. I enjoyed reading this book. The mother in this book, had returned to her small town, and bought a house she had loved as she was growing up. She wanted her son to be brought up in this town. She had friends, and a family that loved her, and helped her take care of her son. The family lived on a Christmas tree farm, and had a Christmas shop. The story was full of all the lovely Christmas traditions, decorations, cookie baking, etc. Then there was the sweet love story to top it off.
This book is a nice story. I took my first foray into a romance novel and found it too bland and it had odd wording. I’ve never read such a simple book where I had to reread a sentence because I read it wrong. I like books with more substance.
An enjoyable and quick read and a nice introduction to Serendipity, Indiana. For the most part a feel good story with some loss and heartbreak and childhood memories. A depth to the characters with four year old, Matthew, Melissa's son, front and center in a lot of the story. When Melissa returns to Serendipity after being away for twenty years, friendships pick up where left off and the Standish Christmas Tree farm holds a lot of memories and I enjoyed meeting the siblings and their mom who all play an important role.
There are twists and turns to the story along with reminisces, family and friends, small town life, small businesses, dreams and the magic of the holiday season. There is some closure with a surprise ending that felt right but the book ended very abruptly. I did enjoy the excerpt from book two in the series, Emily's Dreams.
Ms. Scott is a new to me author. I look forward to reading this series along with other books she's written.
Melissa, a real estate agent, returns to her small community of Serendipity, IN with her young son, Matthew. Soon she runs into her old flame, Jim, now an attorney, but helping out at his family's tree farm. As Melissa begins to find comfort with her old friends, Matthew becomes quite enchanted with Mr. Jim's big truck and the flurry of activities on the tree farm, especially making and eating Christmas cookies! This little boy brings so much joy, love and healing to them all. It's just so heartwarming!
This book wasn't very romantic, but it was full of love, family and friendship. Just perfect for the holidays (or any time of year!). It is the first book I've read from this author and I truly enjoyed her natural writing style and her characters. I will look forward to reading more of her books after the busy holidays!
Melissa is moving back to Serendipity, Indiana with her son Matthew. She grew up in the small town and left for college and never went back. Now she has bought the house she always dreamed about living in and opening a real estate office. She knows she will have to confront her last and set it right. Her high school sweetheart's family has owned the Christmas Tree Farm in the area for years. There are secrets that come to light and helpful hands that will help a family in need. I love reading about small towns and the people who have grown up there. I have lived a few small towns and know how your business is everyone else's too. A great read for all who enjoy a good down home story.
Melissa is a realtor, who is single & a mom to a 5-year old son, Matthew. She loses her job & makes the decision to move back to the town she grew up in, Serendipity, IN. Once she is in Serendipity, her friends, Carla, Francine & Alice are back in her life. Her high school boyfriend, Jim Standish, also comes into her life as he is Carla’s & Francie’s brother. Lillian is their mother. Lillian offers to watch Matthew while Melissa works. The Standishes own a Christmas tree farm. They lost their dad & Lillian’s husband that year. They are struggling to get things done. Melissa finds a way to help them. Then Matthew’s father comes into question. Good story, good characters, good conversations & good descriptions. I will read other books by Ms. Scott.
This is a story about two teenagers who break up and go their separate ways. The characters are well written and easy to understand their motives. The plot is typical of most teenagers where hormones rule their existence. As you see these teenagers several years later get back to a relationship of existing, you feel uncomfortable but you begin to understand. I liked the characters the whole family. Everybody had a personality that I could relate to somebody I’ve personally knew. I was so thrilled at the end of the book the way it ended just put everything into perspective. The author has a good way with her words and the feelings she gets you to experience.
Melissa gets phone calls, the Osborne house was for sale, a house she dreamed of, while living in Serendipity. .A place she though iof as safe, and be happier. Living in an apt with a young son, could she. Then the agency she worked at was bringing in his girlfriend,so she was being downsized. The house was big enough to open an office, and live in it also. Friends from when she lived there welcomed her. Past mistakes need to be forgiven, and a new romance maybe waiting for her. Matthew has won the hearts of her friends, she couldn’t ask for more. Delightful reading of family, friends and maybe second chance at love.
Serendipity, IN, is a small town near Louisville, KY. It has all the small town charm as well as the issues living in a small town bring. When a former citizen returns to open her own real estate office in the town, she isn't prepared for the consequences. An old flame and his family welcome her and her young son with open arms. An out of state developer stirs up trouble, and an old friend reveals secrets that lead to unexpected results. This book, which I received in a giveaway, is delightful. It is one of a series, so you can get to know the families in Serendipity as they worm their way into your heart.
This is a clean, quick read. I was looking for a little, light Christmas story to read and this fit the bill. It is a second chance romance (which I prefer to insta-love). Their relationship feels a little insta-love but we can just believe that all those old feelings come rushing back in an instant and it works. I read a few reviews and it seems like the biggest problem for people was the twist ending. I admit it gave a little bit of a soap opera feel but as the author says in her notes after the story: Probable? no. Possible? yes. And that twist kind of rounds out the happily ever after so I'll accept it.
Sex: kisses Language: a few times-mild Violence: no
1 star & 1/10 hearts. I started out liking this book. But then it started going downhill. There was mentions that Jim & Melissa used to “make out” in private. I concluded this meant they kissed & cuddled. Later on Jim asks if there’s a chance that things’ll get “more physical.” Anyways, all the touching & kissing turned me off, as well as that intimation. Besides that, there was a really immodest girl & it’s mentioned how a guy “salivates” after her; divorce; & a whole saga about artificial insemination, selling your husband’s sperm, & trying to get pregnant that just sickened me. So yeah. Too much sexual content for me.
This is such a pleasant way to catch some Christmas spirit. I liked that this is a short-story/novella that starts the Serendipity, Indiana series. I loved learning a little about the town and a lot about Melissa and Jim's past in this little town. It is such a close-knit community where everyone looks out for everyone else. This is a second chance at love story; as well as one that has an evil developer showing up to cause problems. Join the Standish family, Melissa, Alice, and Matthew for a heartwarming tale of forgiveness and hope.
This is a wonderful second chance romance. Melissa and him were high school sweets that separated in high school. They go their own way. He ends up back in Serendipity and helps in the family farm. She comes back to the house she always wanted. She has a son now. She meets up with his family who she is still friends with and they call in love with her son. Love all the ups and downs during their time of getting back together. Love the family and This book.
Small Town Christmas is a heart warming, & wonderful book. It is Book 1 in the Serendipity, Indiana series. Having her heart broken, Melissa left Serendipity, right after graduation. 20 years later, Melissa has returned, with her son Matthew, wanting for a fresh start for them both. The story is about friends, family & a second chance at love. I loved this book, & really enjoyed reading it!! A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE!!
Melissa grew up in this small town, left and did not think she would ever return. Fate has a way of changing one's plans. Melissa was in real estate in a large city and through no fault of her own, she lost her job. She decided to return home, start her own business and raise her son in the quiet town. She and Jim had some history. He had hurt her and she certainly was not going to forgive him, ever!! It is almost a too sweet story but I am sure you will enjoy reading it.
I just love the small town setting and Christmas holiday of the story. A quick read pulling you in from the start. Mel returning to the town she grew up in, but swore she would only return if one house came on the market. She knew that her son Matthew would be better fitted in the small town with everyone looking out for each other. She has her girlfriends who were still around and she connected with her high school sweetheart again.
It was a cute story, but it was middle of the road for grabbing and keeping my attention. Based on the amount of side characters in the family, the author has the opportunity to have a series featuring each of the family members and friends of the female main character of this book. Personally, because the characters didn't grab my attention enough, I won't be looking to see if they do
I love all things Christmas and this story is a real Christmas tale to believe in.
Well written the feelings flow fast and hard. Loss with coming home and finding love all over again. Characters are life-like you can see and feel their fear, sadness and love. A must read for this holiday season. I can't wait to read the next in the series
Melissa Singer returns to her past in the small town of Serendity, IN as single mother to Matthew, then sets up a realty office and reconnects with old friends. Her social circle includes the Standish family who owns the local Christmas tree farm and are dealing with the recent loss of their patriarch. A gentle book with some warm tingly feelings.
I enjoyed this book. The characters are believable and the outcome predictable. If you like happy endings and stories that revolve around Christmas this just might be your kind of reading. A young woman with her young son returns home to start a new adventure knowing she will also have to face her past, that includes her last memory of her then boyfriend. An easy fun enjoyable read. The first in a series , but don't let that stop you.
Great small town, with lots of wonderful people in it! Especially Matthew! Magdalena is an excellent writer and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
This reminds me of a Hallmark movie! Small town girl comes back her hometown. Gets reacquainted with her high school boyfriend. Then they work out the old issues and new ones too! A perfect quick read.
