Hayden is enjoying a much-needed girls’ trip in Vegas. While basking in the comforts of the plush suites at HAYDAR Resort & Casino, they eat exceptionally well, tour the town safely, and role-play—for fun only.
On the last night, the group of ladies dress as sex workers. Separated from the group, Hayden is mistaken for a real prostitute by a brooding, remarkably handsome man. Playing along, Hayden sets her price to attend a dinner function with him. Her conduct at the event earns her a ‘john’ for the night. Thrilled and simultaneously frightened, Hayden enjoys a night of sensual wonderment and discovery.
Ishaan is hosting a BSU Panther’s event he could care less about attending. Despite his busy schedule as head of operations at three resorts, he still found time to honor his commitment to old college affiliates. Upon entering the casino lobby, Ishaan is blinded by a daring prostitute sitting all too comfortably. He’d just addressed this very issue with his security team. The woman’s audacity is striking, and so is her curvy, lengthy body in a fitted cut-out dress, exposing her abs and a bare hip. Assessing the sex worker, Ishaan invites her to the Panther event…for a fee, of course. Within a few hours, he gets more than what he’d bargained for.
One night of an unexpected sensual excursion is a fun luck of the draw. Two nights of the same is kismet. But the consequences of these two passion-filled nights puts Ishaan and Hayden on a course-collision, proving how throwing caution to the wind can bring about life-long consequences.
Publisher’s “In the Meantime…” is book ONE of a TWO book series. It ends on a suspenseful CLIFFHANGER. This book contains angst, violence, profanity, sexually explicit content, and gory material. If any of these elements is not what you prefer between the pages of a novel, this is not the venture for you.

Updated 8/14/24 I've sat with this for a few days and giving this story 4 stars wasn't sitting right with me. Giving it less than that doesn't sit right with me either because it's LB, but I do have to be honest and I don't rate stories based on their potential. As I previously said, there are so many moving parts when it comes to this book and if we hadn't spent so much time with past characters - we may have been able to connect more with the two main characters and get a better idea of the overall plot. LB continues to be one of my favorite authors and I have my fingers crossed that the second book in this series will pull things together in a way that only she can. As of right now, this story was just "okay".
8/10/24 What happens in Vegas is supposed to stay in Vegas, right? Welllllll, that wasn’t exactly the case for Hayden and Ishaan. The “game” played in Vegas leads to very permanent consequences for these two strangers.
Hayden and Ishaan are two complicated people with past traumas that prevent them from fully trusting. I loved how Ishaan wanted to break through Hayden’s walls and be there for her despite her resistance even though he had his own deep rooted issues with women and relationships. He’s a stand up guy and I loved that for Hayden. She needs someone like that in her corner.
In this book, you’ll see a lot of characters from the LB universe (all are linked so you’ll know which book they come from). I’m leaving this first book with SO MANY QUESTIONS and I’m really hoping the second novel answers them all and ties up the loose ends. There is still so much about these two that we don’t know..things they don’t even know about each other.
To be honest, I'm still not sure what's going on…. Many things felt unfinished, and I'm not really sure how book 2 will end. I'm not sure if there was ever a character that we really got to know; everyone is still a mystery. This wasn’t what I was expecting from Love 🤷🏽♀️ but I guess in the meantime we wait.
In the meantime...I wish I would have waited for the second book. All my bookies know LB is my all time fave and I usually wait for the completed series because sometimes it's hard to make sense of the story in book one. However, I just HAD to read this book and unfortunately I didn't vibe with it 😩.
I've decided NOT to rate this book until I read the second one. Why, cuz that's my business. No seriously I have faith that all questions will be answered because atm I am still confused and having read LBs ENTIRE catalog I know that is the NORM for book one.
The way Hayden and Ishaan came together was such an original storyline which had me excited to read the story. Unfortunately we still don't know much about them except they are both still hanging on to trauma which has kept them from pursuing relationships. I'm conflicted on how I feel about Ishaan, he came across as a boss, intelligent, caring, and guarded. His past relationship did some serious damage on him and listen I have questions 😩. Hayden has a terrible relationship with her mother and some deep trauma in her past that has her extremely cautious when it comes to trusting people. Her momma deserve at least one deep backhand slap 🤷🏾♀️. Although, we were left confused as to how they will come together I look forward to reading their full story.
I will say I wish we had less of the sub characters from the LBU iykyk. I think a few cameos is always nice, and I happen to normally appreciate that touch. However, we had about 12 characters from previous books and it was overwhelming to me. I would have loved more focus with just the main characters.
Love is a very masterful crafter with her pen. Her stories have a certain style to them and we’ve come to expect a certain level of complexity and “trauma” from her characters and her stories. This story hit a little different and I don’t think that this is necessarily a good thing or a bad thing, just different from her norm. The question is, was it Love’s intent or did it just happen that way? Maybe she wanted to switch it up and try something fun and less heavy. Love has put in enough work for me to trust the process and give a little grace.
We met Hayden in a previous story and already have a little background on her, however Ishaan is an unknown for us. Love didn’t dig very deep with these two and we didn’t get a lot of character development however these two still came with her signature side of trauma. I have a lot of questions as several situations were left unresolved. Because I’m an avid reader, a lot of times I can guess what will happen next. I have no idea which way she’ll go when resolving these issues, even though I have various possible outcomes in my head and that is very refreshing to me.
I enjoyed the short cameos from past characters, they didn’t bother me. It gives me a little glimpse/update of characters whose stories are finished. A little “What are they doing now?”
I can’t wait to see what happens in book two and prayerfully Love skillfully and artfully resolves all the unknowns as she’s done in the past.
2.5 ⭐️ I had high hopes for this book but just like the last two books Love Belvin is stuck in LBU and I want out… 55% of this book take us through almost every character that she previous wrote about. We get a synopsis on all their books that I cannot enjoy Hayden and Ish story. Also for me the book does not flow, one chapter it’s about Hayden and Ish the next it’s about something else that I know maybe will connect later but it was very confusing to me. I love LB writing but to me this book was heavily overwritten, she needs to focus on the main characters.
For me there is no growth in her writing from her 1st book to now.
After reading book 2 I had to reread this and I enjoyed it better the 2nd time.
I must admit, it has been quite some time since I have read a Love Belvin novel, and after reading her latest installment ‘In the Meantime, I can certainly understand why I drifted away from her work.
This book made little to no sense whatsoever, and unnerved me to an incredible degree that I found myself struggling to connect with the characters. The two main leads, Hayden and Ishan, were unfortunately overshadowed by the constant and unwelcome appearance of side characters from her previous books. These constant and unexpected appearances of these additional characters were not only distracting but also annoying, as it seemed the author was more interested in promoting her previous work rather than focusing on the current story.
While I understand that authors may want to tie their narratives together, it strikes me as odd that they expect readers to have read all of their previous works. Each novel, in my opinion, should be self-contained, allowing new readers to jump in without the burden of prior knowledge. This trend of referencing and incorporating characters from other works is overdone and can take away from the enjoyment of readers who have not read all of the author's previous works. It can also be confusing and distracting for readers who may not remember all of the past characters and their stories. Instead, authors should focus on creating unique and well-developed characters within each individual book, allowing readers to fully immerse themselves in the story without any outside distractions.
And that’s why I found myself questioning the author's intentions in including so many references to her other books - was it simply to appease her fans or to make up for a weak plot? However, upon reflection, I have come to the conclusion that it’s just lazy writing. Which was subpar and ultimately failed to deliver on its promises. The scenes, dialogues, and interactions between the two main characters were disappointing and left me feeling unfulfilled. The characters themselves were poorly portrayed, with Hayden's attempt at pretending to be a prostitute falling flat and coming off as cringeworthy. Even as a "pretend" prostitute, she did not accurately portray the character and ultimately ruined what could have been a compelling storyline. As someone who has read many books featuring prostitutes, I can confidently say that Hayden does not fit the bill and her portrayal was highly disappointing.
And the male lead was no different. I couldn't help but feel underwhelmed by Ishan's personality also. He lacked any unique or interesting qualities, which only added to my disappointment. All I could think was, "this is it? This is the person that everyone has been hyping up?" It was a letdown and I couldn't shake off the feeling of frustration.
The sex scenes lacked chemistry and passion, making them uninteresting and unfulfilling for the readers. Each sex scene description was abrupt, and failed to successfully convey the intended emotions and messages through the intimacy. One particular instance stood out, was when Hayden had a flashback to her father leaving immediately after having sex with Ishan. This abrupt shift in tone came across as awkward and juvenile, reminiscent of roadkill. It was clearly an attempt to create an emotional impact, but it failed miserably.
Despite being a fan of Love Belvin's previous works, I have to admit that this book was a letdown. The plot was nonsensical and lacked coherence, with the constant back-and-forth between Ishan and Hayden and the unnecessary miscommunication. This not only made the story difficult to follow, but it also failed to engage me as a reader in a meaningful way. Additionally, the characters lacked depth and development, making it hard for me to connect with them and care about their journey. Overall, while face-to-face interaction may have its benefits, this book lacked the quality and depth that I have come to expect from this author.
While I can acknowledge that this book many flaws, I must also recognize some of its redeeming qualities. Belvin's writing style and use of descriptive language were impressive, but they were not enough to make up for the weaknesses in the plot and character development. Although some readers may enjoy the author's style, I personally found the book to be disappointing and not worth the hype it received.
And although there were some redeeming qualities, the excessive reliance on past characters, poorly executed sexual scenes, and cringe-worthy flashback sequences left me feeling unsettled and frustrated. Unfortunately, this book failed to meet my expectations, and I can now understand why I had lost interest in the author's previous works.
I can only hope that in her future works, Belvin will focus on creating more dynamic and relatable characters, and avoid relying too heavily on repetitive and poorly incorporation of past characters. As it stands, this book has left me hesitant to pick up any of her future novels.
This review is in no way a negative one but a critical readers view of the authors work. I do appreciate the effort put into creating a complex and diverse cast of characters and it is my hope that Ms Belvin takes these criticisms into consideration and produces a stronger and more well-rounded novel in the future.
LB & her words. Was a lot of mystery surrounding this book. At one point I thought I was reading a thriller lol We got a lot of updates on LB’s clients. That ending 😮 I want to knock Ish upside his head!!!
Hoping for book 2 to flow better ☺️
MY NOTES: (contain spoilers) 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨
•Loved the cousin dynamics betwn Rayna, Hayden, & Sundryia •I loved when we got Hayden & Ishaan on page together 🥰 •Mika was in her feelings and misplacing her anger on Hayden. She made a rash decision. •Shoutout to Dr. Patterson •Ebonee proposition with Ishaan?!?!?!? 😬 I’m curious how this will pan out. •Mehki is protective of Ishaan. He’s a little jealous I think & being a brat. •The background we got on Mandy 😮 She did a number on Ishaan!!!!!! •The pantry scene 🤣 but also 🤤☺️ •Ken/Rob ?!?!? What’s the deal with him?
*I DO NOT LIKE ISHAAN SUCKING ON THOSE DAMN LOLLIPOPS 🤮😖
I wonder what banana peppers & crackers taste like 🤨
Let me start by saying I KNEW this was going to end in a cliffhanger but I still sat down and read this in less than 24 hours. I have zero regrets but a ton of questions.
This has to be one of LB’s sexiest books ever. There was so much lust between Ishaan and Hayden, this is for GROWN READERS. Now beyond that the emotions in this one were HEAVY. These are 2 clients who need to be in the office every day because they have a lot to unpack and for some reason I feel like we’ve barely scratched the surface. Hayden frustrated me SO MUCH but with a mother like hers I absolutely understand her hyper independence and why she’s so emotionally cutoff. I can already tell I’m going to be going back and forth over my girl. Ishaan…..idk man, it’s something about him that feels so familiar and I can’t put my finger on it. He, like Hayden, is very closed off and that reveal towards the end explained so much. This book kept me on the edge of my seat and by time I got to the end I had more questions than answers, which means I know she’s about to take us on a ride in book 2.
I will say I’m LOVING the cousin connection with Rayna and Sundryia. I’m glad Hayden has them in her corner. As a long term resident of the LBU this kinda feels like a family reunion because almost everybody is here, and if they weren’t they were at least mentioned. I want to ask when book 2 will be out but I’m just gonna wait for LB to tell us. Go ahead and read it now, know you won’t have any of the answers but you are going to enjoy the ride. Cliffhanger support group meets every Wednesday at 7pm
The title and the subtitle is most definitely understated. The way the couple met and the subsequent acts and events were vintage Belvin. There is always a deeper storyline to uncover as the couple navigates through and into the depths of the real tasks of knowing one another. Do you ever really know a person? Well, we will see how this next part unfolds.
This book was like a TV show that catches your attention, but then you realize it is kinda all over the place, but you keep watching anyway because you have to see how it ends. The story started with these characters in a situation where you could kinda see where the road would take them, and you were ready for the ride. But then, the author threw in a lot of details, additional characters, and random dialog about a subplot that didn't mean much now but will likely be picked up in the next book. And while that is all well and good, I'd really like for Love to keep the story about the main characters for the entirety of the story for once. I tolerated these off-topic writing shenanigans in the Muted Hoplessness and Wayward Love series because I really liked those characters, but enough is a freakin nuff already. The main characters and their story should be enough to keep us engaged. I found myself skimming through most of Ish's chapters because, quite frankly, I wasn't that interested in anything that didn't directly involve his family or his situation with Hayden. And for as grown and educated as Hayden was, she was immature and irksome when asked direct questions. I had higher hopes for this cast. And for as long as this book was, there was absolutely no reason for an abrupt ending / cliffhanger. Not to mention the dialog before the ending was just confusing and appeared to be out of left field. Overall, this was just a lot of nothing really and definitely not a favorite for me.
Ishaan is BIG DEE ENERGY, baby! He’s a gangsta, a business man, and the gentleman tendencies are MUAH! Chef’s kiss! I’m going to be on edge awaiting book two!
For me, Love Belvin can do no wrong. To gift me with my AD Jacobs in this new series, with multiple appearances, Lord Yes!!! And shout out to the favorite Pastor of the LB Universe.
Ish and Hayden have had me hot and bothered with the sexual chemistry, tickled by how clueless they both are about the same thing and eager to see what's going to happen next.
The are multiple story lines with the main characters, but they all share a common thread. This series has family betrayal, deception, hot sex, violence, really good sex, and it's just the FIRST BOOK! Just know you won't be disappointed, frustrated with the characters, yes but by that time you're already invested.
I can't believe how a book can suck you into it so much. The story, the characters, the drama. All of it! I like this exotic My strange new male alpha LB man. He reminds me of Sadik. Charming, but deadly. I'm also loving the new family dynamic with the cousins acting like sisters. This is a great read. I can't wait to pick up where this one left off from.
What happened in Vegas did not stay in Vegas!!! Hayden and Isshan was hot! Andrews then it got cold! This series I production pulled me in! Too much to unpack because you can't until you get all the facts.
Once again Ms Love proves why she is the truth. This book had me on edge for the entire book. I don’t even know how to give a review without spilling spoilers. This book gave the perfect about of spice, an had you trying to predict the next outcome to just be excited. I had to stop reading till my friend caught up cause it’s definitely a book you have to talk about with someone. So excited to see what next cause they got me stressed. So glad I waited to read this till the next book was released. This is the kind of books that reminds you why you love to read.
Lawdddd have mercy, reading this book reminded of why I became hooked on the LBU !!!!! The story first of the plot was genius and the development top notch.
I was so giddy reading, like ohhh hurry up I can’t wait until but then I was slow down before it ends 😂😂😂😂
I liked Ishaan and Hayden. He’s not a typical alpha but he’s still strong and def interesting. Hayden , like I liked her overall but sis had some head turning moments. I can’t wait for book 2 because that ending, got me here tense as ever
It was good seeing my old favorites and you know when Ezra (my man ) makes an appearance, it’s not to be taken lightly!!!!
I was going to wait to read this because I know the author writes in 3-Book Series. I decided today to listen to the audiobook and I enjoyed it. The main characters Ishaan and Hayden are very complicated and operate off emotions because of the trauma that they have dealt with in the past! The cliffhanger at the end...I was so hurt! My feelings were legit hurt! I can't wait until the next book comes out because I know it will clear up all the questions that I have.
Oh my… what an ending.. 😑. Hayden, the frustration she gave me 🤦🏾♀️ then the understanding I had. She still gave unnecessary drama when there didnt need to be any. Ishaan, I was feeling my guy and still is, but homie got big secrets!!!! He cant lay the he need the truth always at Hayden’s doorstep when he has some untruths knocking hard at his door! Because are you “Poppy”?? 🤔
My instinct was to wait for book 2 and I should have. Spoiler: HUGE CLIFFHANGER
I really like this book. It took a min to get to the storyline and for the book to get good. But the cliffhanger is insane. But wait is that his REAL son. To play the part of a hooker then end up in the situation that she was in was just wild.
What a beautiful mess! I know it's going to all work out, eventually, but the roller coaster Ms. Hayden has me on...and then when she gets a breakthrough, Ishaan flips the script at the end. Their trauma is real!! I love the title of the book and was especially pleased to catch up with Ezra & Lex. The revelations about Lisa-Mare had me sitting up and grabbing my chest! I feel like in this first book I have gotten to know Hayden and Ishaan, but I still have so many questions! This is my first time reading an LB series as it's being released. I've never had to wait to go on to the next installment, so this will be a tough test of my patience for sure! LB's ability to give her characters depth remains unmatched! We just keep unfolding more and more layers, clear up to the end of this first installment... I'm so disappointed in Ishaan right now! lol..:) I've been on his team, admiring his seemingly wise handling of Hayden's brokenness, clear up until his ASSuming at the end. It's clear Ishaan's mother's wisdom is a major influence of his wise approach, a direct contrast to Hayden's predicament... but I need to know what is the root of his trauma and cause of his reaction at the end. Seems he and Ebonee may have a little something in common with the crazy! His rush to a conclusion contradicts who I thought he was. Complicated?! Yes ma'am! Let's go, Sis Love. I need "the inevitable" ASAP! (One last note... I couldn't wait for them to figure out the bananas peppers & crackers connection! Disgusting combo in my head, but made me laugh/smile every time either of them went for it!)
"In the Meantime" by Love Belvin is an exceptional read that left me eagerly anticipating the next installment. Belvin truly shines in this novel, seamlessly reintroducing beloved characters while weaving in subtle hints along the way.
The emotional dynamics between Rayna, Sundryia, and Hayden are captivating as they explore their newfound kinship and friendship as cousins. Although Sundryia and Hayden’s bond may be rooted in shared trauma, a fierce protectiveness emerge among them. As the story unfolds, Rayna and Hayden discover that they share a powerful connection, both having been deeply hurt by the people they cared about. People who should have protected them. This shared pain has led them to build impenetrable emotional walls, making their journey of vulnerability and trust even more compelling.
Ishaan, who I absolutely love, shares with Hayden a profound mistrust of the opposite sex due to past betrayals. I’m eager to see how their relationship evolves as they navigate the complex terrain of trust and healing. Ishaaan also gives me Kid vibes because he's ADJ's corporate enforcer, and I love that too! Belvin has crafted a narrative that beautifully explores these deep emotional ties, leaving me invested in the characters and their journeys.
Girl, you had me sounding like Tyrese, why you wanna act like that
I was moving and grooving along with this wonderfully well written, sensual story of two broken adults who find each other in a very unconventional way. Enjoying the glimpses of their pain and suffering and understanding their issues, and then you hit me with the okie done. The plot twists and ending. Baby, I was not ready. You blindsided me, but in the best way possible because I loved it. I had to read those last couple of pages again because that whole scenario came out of left field. I wasn't ready or prepared for the fall out. Now I'm sitting here singing Tyrese wondering what in the world just happened. So how much longer are you going to torture your readers and make them wait for the next book. On another note, I have to give one small spoiler because the whole exchange tickled me so that I still remember it. Hayden and Ishssan were getting it in grown folks style in the pantry, in walks Mekai. He's on his phone until he hears the noise. He says, Poppy is thar you. Ishssan says, Yes. Mekai asks, Poppy if I open this door, will you be upset with me?? Ishssan says, Yes. Mekai backs away from the door, leaves the kitchen....I died!! I could picture that whole scene in my head and I had tears in my eyes laughing. Highly recommend this book!! Even with the dreaded cliffhanger
Ishaan and Hayden are in the middle of some mess, and I can’t wait for it all to completely unravel in book two. It all starts with a one-night stand that leads to more. Their sexual chemistry is explosive. But, Hayden and Ishaan both have trust issues that they will have to work through if they want to make a relationship work past the bedroom.
Love Belvin drives home the importance of community and tapping into your support system when you’re struggling. The cousins — Rayna, Sundryia and Hayden — all have a tendency to run and isolate themselves when the crap hits the fan. Rayna has grown so much, she’s able to be another voice helping Hayden understand that she can’t go it alone. In addition to Rayna (can you believe it?!), my No. 1 LBU bae, Ezra, and Ishaan’s mother, Dr. Nancy Patterson, who is a psychologist, are present to provide wise counsel to Ishaan and Hayden throughout the book.
Hayden’s mama had me ready to fight. That lady is a total bozo.
I think Ebonee is gonna be a problem in the next book. We already know she has a history of unhinged behavior.
This book is so good! Love, no pressure, but how soon can we get book two? 😂
The book started with a bang, simmered down, and sped up a bit. Love can give you couples whose intensity is felt throughout the story. I guess I do feel like I know Hayden and Ish. I'm sure we are going to get a loop around in part ll.
The book spent too much tying her LB universe to the story. Where there could have been more character development dialogue she gave a synopsis about so many of her other stories, including her most recent one. (which wasn't a fave). I think that was overstated in this book.
I do think I like both the characters for what they presented. The book does work in some of the more complex themes around SA that Love likes to keep in her arsenal. Which just always leaves me curious. We will see if the trauma wins early on in the next book.
My expectations for this novel was very high, and I must say that every and each one were met. In my mind, I consider this realistic romance. I felt the emotion from each character in what felt like real time, as if you could reach out and feel it. Love Belvin has a way with description that places you in the scene. It was easier for me to fall in love with the main to characters this story , because the connection comes first, and then the layers are peeled back piece by piece. I appreciated the difference in pace for their story. I went in knowing it would be a cliff hanger, so I took my time to digest. I recommend you do so. You are not going to want it to end. For my fellow LBU stands, listen so many of our previous loved characters are in attendence. I loved it here, and I can not wait until the next book in this series.
Ishaan and Hayden started off as a forbidden treat, that became so much more. The baggage that they carry won't allow, them to relax in the state of undeniable chemistry, that I am sure is rooted in on them being on the cusp of a lifetime love.
The sex was hot, the dialogue was engaging, and I enjoyed witnessing the relationships building between Hayden and her cousins. (Rayna is my favorite LBU heroin) I ain't new to this LBU so I know she is gonna make me love him but right now, I am team Hayden. Damn it man cut her some slack! I wasn't prepared for the pace to pick up and the situation to be going down (I had lost myself in the passion of it all) and then bam! Ish had hit the fan. Well we wait for part two. This was a good read.
