“First flight, final fall” reminds me of “Kulti” by Mariana Zapata: The H is a famous german football player, H is training/a part of h work, h is not a part of the team and feels somewhat like an outsider and struggles with her family.
In this one the characters are younger and more promiscuous, this is not a slow-burn as “Kulti”.
As the story proceeds the books similarities reduces.
Saylor is a badass, strong minded, the top female recruit in the country and part of Lancaster University’s women’s soccer team. In private she has no problem finding a partner in bed, and is NOT interested in anything remotely relationship-wise. Being abandoned by her mother, and growing up with a absent father has taken its toll on her ability to trust others. This part was very good portrayed, and Saylor is a much stronger heroine the more you get to know her.
”Soccer has always been a constant in my life. The one thing I take seriously and prioritize.”
Saylor is accepted to Scholenberg, the most exclusive training camp in the world. Here she also meets the famous and (voted) sexiest man alive - Adler Beck. The insta-lust is there right away, and they quickly hook up.
Beck is a lot more forthcoming through wards Saylor, her walls are very high. Saylor is good at what she does, she doesn’t care about Beck’s history with OW or his hero status, this is something very refreshing for him. As the time goes, the pair develop a friendship, with respect, fun and a lot of sex.
The camp ends and the separation takes it’s natural course, leaving them both with a big part missing.
”But unfortunately, I realize there is someone I’d like to talk to right now, someone who understands what it’s like to carry a thousand pounds of expectations. But I can’t call him.”
Saylor can’t recognise a feeling she never felt before, and she is terrified of love and trusting others, which makes her push the H away.
”I have no idea if I’m ready for a relationship, or how to know if I am. Does me not knowing mean I’m not? I had friends with “boyfriends” in middle school, but I’ve never called a guy my boyfriend. Not even close. I’ve had no interest. I either friend-zone a guy, or I sleep with him. Beck was supposed to remain in the second category, but the lines got blurred.
I let them blur.”
Why not a higher score?
I had a problem rating this one. I liked it, but there was also too much missing for me. It’s good if we only see Saylors personal development, but as a romance it was too much lacking for me. I don’t think we got to know Beck good enough, I’m not convinced this book gave us a HEA. We never got to actually read about them as a couple. When they finally became exclusive, it ended, like literally the next page.
I also missed the romance, we needed more love-talk between them. I believe Beck’s point of view would have benefited this story.
”I care what you think. I think about you the way other people think about me.”
Overall a good read!
- No cheating
- OW/OM drama: almost nothing. A ex-hook up is mentioned, Saylor says she doesn’t care but she does.
- Triggers: abandonment
- Epilogue 8 months later
