In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.
In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.

after watching the cardcaptor sakura anime when i was young, ive always been really nostalgic and fond of it. i occasionally wanted to read the manga but the clamp universe is too convoluted and i’ve heard of some unsavoury things in the manga… but, recently i saw these lovely collector editions of the manga 🥹 so, i wanted to see if the manga would move me enough to purchase it. unfortunately, i had a better experience with the anime but, this was still very nice.
everything is relatively great - i like the art, the characters, the plot, the romances. i was a little bored near the final arc but, i teared up when the main love confession happened so, i guess that definitely got redeemed. (wild that two nine-year olds have a better romance than most other romances out there 💀.)
one issue i have is some of the taboo relationships in this… im so happy the anime changed this. i like the clamp idealogy of “all love should be appreciated and isn’t wrong, etc. etc.” but, sometimes they really cross the line… the really minor side romance between a nine-year old and her teacher was SICK. there were unfortunately a few sickening age-gap, illegal romances in this. the two i would say, proper main romances, of the main character and then, her brother are really well-done. (im sooo nostalgic for the romance with her brother as well - that was one of my very first canon mlm ships that i was into, her brother is still my pfp on my ao3 account for so many years…)
i won’t continue reading the manga because of the same reasons i didn’t want to start it 😔 i also heard the sequels to this are quite angsty and im fine with this being the childhood cuteness it is right now. definitely the best mahou shoujo out there (with rgu)!

Review for the complete series
While not as big as similar titles such as Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura is definitely a manga household name. Elementary Schooler Sakura finds a book in her father's library which not only proves to be magical but also releases the lion-like creature Kero-chan who tasks her with finding all the magical cards the book once contained. The cards were created by the mightiest magician to have lived - Clow. With each card Sakura adds to her collection, her own magical powers grow.
CLAMP
Cardcaptor Sakura already wins points simply by being a work of CLAMP. The art is as gorgeous as one can expect and it's almost unavoidable to read if one wants to delve into the multiverse these artists have created. It's definitely one of their bigger works, especially as it features the characters that are later featured as the protagonists of CLAMP's crossover work: Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE. Although this manga's art is a tad less intricate and almost simple in the use of screen toning, there's something very light and loveable about it and it's undeniably adorable.
Magical Girl
I've always struggled to view Cardcaptor Sakura as a magical girl manga. It undoubtedly is, but I do find it drops some of this genre's typical tropes - and I mean that in the best way possible. Sakura doesn't actually transform through any magical means. She wears a different 'magical girl' costume for most chapters, but they are all tailored by her best friend Tomoyo and are really just for variety and cuteness (and surely the artists having their fun) rather than any magical process that all other magical girls go through. In fact, all the magic is much more akin to more traditional witches and wizard's and even draws on Chinese mythology. One thing I also really appreciate is that Sakura is just your normal girl who is collecting magical cards to stop them from causing havoc rather than a girl (or group of girls) pitched against an evil force to save the earth from certain doom. It just has a much lighter and appropriate feeling to it.
Characters & Plot
It definitely starts off very episodic, but it has a nice underlying plot that becomes more solid toward the second half of the story. I find myself more invested in the main story rather than the individual episodes in which Sakura finds yet another card. The plot itself is to an equal amount about the mystery behind the cards as well as Sakura's daily life with her family and friends. Unfortunately, if we're purely looking at the plot, I can't deny that I find Cardcaptor Sakura a little boring at times. It is a bit strange because Sakura and the male protagonist Syaoran are among my favourite manga characters. I absolutely adore these two and this series features a lot of other likeable characters such as Kero-chan and Tomoyo. It is, therefore, a little baffling that their plot is sometimes a little underwhelming, though it does not change that this is still a manga I hold dear.
Romance
This is where it gets complicated. CLAMP are known to have rather unconventional romantic couples. And despite Cardcaptor Sakura being one of their most innocent and light-hearted works, I think it is also easily the most controversial romance-wise. As mentioned above, I love Sakura and Syaoran and even more so as a couple. Mind you, these two are about 10 years old and their relationship doesn't develop until very late into the series - an embrace is as far as they get. Yet it's almost that innocent setup that makes them such an adorable couple - it doesn't need to be romance focused for these two to be an exemplary match.
When it comes to homosexual characters, I find that CLAMP has always been ahead of time, though not necessarily in a realistic way. On one hand, it is great that multiple sexualities are included throughout the CLAMP world. On the other hand, it is treated almost too idealistically. Don't get me wrong, equality is important. But there is truth to non-straight persons having to face certain difficulties in daily life that others might not. In Cardcaptor Sakura, as well as most other CLAMP works, the appearance of a homosexual character is almost taken for granted - it sometimes feels as though the whole of it takes place in an ideal parallel world. I believe that both in reality and in other fiction, there's bound to be a character or two who at least consider the situation around a homosexual character. This is probably even more true when one considers that this series is from the 90s.
The only true issue in regards to romance lies with a certain age gap. Mind you, I am not in the least against relationships with age gaps - fiction or reality alike. 10 years, 20 years - where to draw the line? I don't think there is anything wrong with an age gap as long as it's a relationship built on mutual feelings and care rather than an older party taking advantage of a younger one. You can't really choose who you fall in love with and age seems a trivial thing when you truly love someone. In the same sense, I have no issues with certain 'taboo' relationships such as student-teacher, provided again the feelings are genuine and neither party is taken advantage of. I know people in real-life who have loved and married their former teacher - they're just about as happy as any couple I know. A relationship like that brings its difficulties, but in my mind, it really comes down to how it's handled more than anything else.
Now, while I neither mind age gaps nor student-teacher relationships, I do believe there is a certain threshold of how young the younger party can be. Realistically, there's a massive difference between an 8-year-old dating an 18-year-old and a couple of, say, an 18 and 28-year-old. Cardcaptor Sakura blows all caution to the wind and introduces the relationship between the 10-or-so-year-old Rika and her teacher Terada. Now Terada might be as young as 20, which would result in an age gap of about 10 years. I don't see an issue with a 10-year gap, but the fact that Rika is around 10 makes this a really awkward couple. While everything is kept at a perfectly innocent level - there are clear signs that they're staying apart until she is old enough - the fact that Terada is even considering a 10-year-old is just not right. The only thing that makes this readable to me is the fact that none of the young characters, the protagonists Sakura and Syaoran included, behave like the 10-year-olds they're meant to be. I often seem to get this issue when it comes to manga, but most characters appear a good couple of years older to me than they are actually meant to be. I would much rather think of Sakura and co. as 14-year-olds, and that already makes the whole Rika business a tad less of a shocker.
Interestingly, while Rika and Terada receive a lot of scorn from readers everywhere, there is another very similar couple which is rarely called out. There are clear hints of a budding - and encouraged - romance between yet another 10-year-old pupil and his female teacher. Their age gap is likely similar to that of Rika and Terada's, yet it does not receive nearly as much backlash. It seems people have a bigger issue when the girl is the younger party which frankly is quite unfair - I believe both are equally problematic.
So, coming to an end, Cardcaptor Sakura has its oddities and even boring moments - the romance must really be taken with a grain of salt or a flexible imagination. But it is also an adorable and loveable series with some of my very favourite and memorable characters that I can't help but love.

After years, Elex decided to reprint this manga, and I decided to collect it.
Cardcaptor Sakura is probably the manga that makes me adore CLAMP. I truly love the concepts of collecting magical cards. And I also love most of Sakura's outfits (made by Tomoyo, her bestie... it's hard to believe a little girl can make those complicated outfits!).
Reading it again, I noticed several things I didn't really care the first time. Though the main characters are children (elementary school students), there are complex issues raised, such as shoujo-ai and shounen-ai, also romantic relationship between a student (4th grader) and her teacher. You can call me old school, but these things irritate my conscience.

Recuerdos de infancia en 3, 2, 1!! Es verdad que si ves primero el anime te quedas con ganas de que el manga sea más largo y detallado, ya que tienen diferencias importantes, pero tanto el manga como el anime me encantan!

Es tan graciosa Sakura quedándose dormida todos los días, las peleas con el hermano cuando le dice dinosaurio o algo incorrecto delante de Yukito ella le pega, y Kero pensando solo en comer, lindo revivir esta historia.
Me acuerdo que de chica veía el anime por Cartoon Network (buenos tiempos) y hace unos tres años lo volví a ver y shipear a Sakura y Shaoran, aunque sea infantil quiero volver a revivir esta historia hermosa<3

I finally got around to reading this (strangely enough I decided to do that after rewatching the first episode ever of Sailor Moon) and I must say I'm surprised at how different it is from the anime. I thought it wouldn't be that much, but even the same cards have different capturing plots. And it apparently wasn't Sakura's fault all the cards flew away in the first place. But I guess it's understandable that the manga would have a tighter plot and the anime would have more filler episodes. (I've just discovered this is the same with Sailor Moon's five anime series and only 18 volumes of manga covering the same arcs)
Anyway, yeah, I'm doing that going back to my childhood thing, except I've never actually read the manga even though I've watched the anime countless times, so I must say it's a really interesting and fun read so far even though it's a tad bit more serious than the anime, but at the same time I also look forward to the relationships and important things being more in-depth/intense than the lighthearted anime. CCS is truly one of CLAMP's best masterpieces ever.

This is one of the best manga of my childhood, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE This Book SO MUCH!!! <3
This book gave me the freedom of imagination, and it helped developed many ideas for my own stories!! The story plot of this manga, to me and my friends, was also very good and interesting!
It puts together the magical realm together with the human world, it also goes through many stageds of life, school, friendship and love.
Would definitely recommend this manga or any written by CLAMP, their books expresses a lot of things, and would definitely interest many readers with their work.

I remember watching and loving Card Captor Sakura when I was little, so now that the omnibus manga collections are out, I thought it was a good time to revisit. The story is simple and definitely geared towards younger readers. I love all the queerness in the narrative, and how all the characters express love so easily towards one another! It's a great model for kids that you don't often see in media devoted to them. I am not a fan of the gross teacher/student relationships that popped up, particularly the one that involves an adult proposing to an elementary school girl. It's such an unnecessary and inappropriate addition to an otherwise delightful series for young girls :l WTF Clamp?

Compré este primer tomo de Sakura Cardcaptor por curiosidad. Conocía la historia desde hace tiempo aunque no en profundidad. Nunca me gustó demasiado el anime aunque es cierto que no lo ví durante mi niñez y eso puede influir en mi percepción, ya que los animes tienden a suavizar e infantilizar las tramas de este estilo. Aun así debo admitir que el manga me está encantando y ha sido todo un descubrimiento.
De forma muy simplificada se trata de la típica historia de chica con poderes que debe salvar al mundo de seres malvados que en este caso salen de unas cartas. Unas cartas todo hay que decirlo con unos diseños preciosos.
Este es otro de esos mangas que tan sólo por el estilo de dibujo de su mangaka tienes que leerlo. Muy cuidado, con muchos detalles, expresiones muy bien reflejadas aunque en ocasiones las escenas de acción están tan recargadas de líneas que tienes que fijarte muy bien para saber lo que está ocurriendo.
Una historia tierna con una protagonista muy joven que puede dar impresión de trama infantil sin embargo está tan bien llevada que no importa demasiado el publico al que este dirigido pues se disfruta muchísimo.
Tengo muchas ganas de continuar con los siguientes tomos y ver como Sakura y los demás personajes van creciendo y madurando.

Como alguien que creció viendo el anime, ha sido una gozada volver a esta historía y a estos personajes.
A comparación del anime, considero que el ritmo va un tanto rápido. Entiendo que el anime tenga relleno, como es común, pero teniendo en cuenta que son 9 volúmenes del manga, me pregunto como se irá desarrollando la historia y que tantos cambios habrá. Estoy muy emocionado por seguir leyendo esta historia.

November 10, 2017I grew up watching the anime, but could never remember how it ended. I tried to re-watch the anime several times to get to the end, but anime is too time-consuming so I finally decided to switch over and read this series. My review pertains to all 12 volumes.
Why You Might Bump This Down On Your TBR: The strangest elements of this manga are the normalized child/adult (student/teacher) relationships from Sakura's parents to Sakura's friend and teacher. This is even stranger when one of the adult characters calls Sakura's dad out for his behaviors of seducing and marrying a child being disgusting. Syaoran's attraction to Yuki is explained with magic which makes him less than ideal bisexual representation in my opinion. The cards are not at all as big a part of this manga as they are in the anime! Ultimately, I wasn't satisfied with the way the plot progressed and the story arcs ended.

Tomoyo tells the reader that she's in romantic love with Sakura, Touya and Yuki end up together, and Syaoran is attracted to Yuki and Sakura throughout the series. Qué tierno es este manga! Sakura es lo más lindo que hay, dan ganas de tenerla de hermanita.
Cuando lo leí la primera vez no noté ciertos detalles, como lo (por ahora) inútil que es Kero xD, o el desastre atómico que son las guardaespaldas de Tomoyo que la dejan sola constantemente.
Es realmente una historia muy entretenida, las cartas Clow son geniales (deberían hacer un juego actual donde haya que juntarlas), los atuendos que le diseña Tomoyo a Sakura son tan tiernos como extraños, y en general está llenísimo de humor.
El final me hizo soltar un par de lagrimones, estas CLAMP me manipulan las emociones además de hacer unos dibujos preeeeciosos.

I remembered really liking Sakura, despite some... issues with later relationships. None of that is here in the first volume, though. Here it's pure, innocent fluff, which is what I always liked about it. The art is very, very cute, and the characters are very likeable. I like how straightforward the plot is (catch the cards!) and how we go straight into the action without an entire volume of backstory. I'll definitely continue re-reading the series. (Though I can't remember if I ever managed to read all of the volumes in the first place...)

Soy fan de Sakura CC desde niña. Tengo toda la serie y las dos películas en DVD, las cuales solía ver una y otra vez hasta volver loca a mi hermana con mis gritos de "¡libérate!". Shaoran fue mi primer amor (no shame). E inclusive tengo mi propio juego de Cartas Clow. Y, a pesar de todo eso, esta es la primera vez que leo el manga (no tengo idea de porqué no lo leí antes), y tal vez es mi fanatismo hablando, pero: es genial.

3 stars - one for each of the gays in the first book! They are carrying the story so far!
Sakura-chan is very sweet. I love that she enjoys sports and takes pride in her physical strength. Her creative solutions to get the cards are also a joy to read.
Her friendship with Tomoyo so far feels a bit one-sided. But to be fair, Sakura has a lot on her plate at the moment, and Tomoyo seems to be enjoying every second of her work (also, she is crazy rich, so it’s kind of her to share her resources with her best friend).
Sweetness aside, unfortunately, the manga also left me with a lot to think about... I really wanted to enjoy this. I am always looking for a nostalgic Magical Girl manga. Maybe it is an unfair comparison, but being in the same genre, I just have to mention that Sailor Moon does it better!
I can’t believe I thought Mamoru and Usagi’s age difference was a bit icky. Oh boy, this manga is on another level. (So I don't agree with the arguments online saying it’s a '90s or genre thing)
I guess it’s not completely unheard of to have a poorly aged teacher-student relationship in an old Shoujo, but in Cardcaptor they won’t. Stop. Mentioning. It.
They really want to give us every opportunity to ponder that age difference. Poor Sakura is too young to understand! But we, as readers, are not. And neither is Tomoyo’s mom. Sonomi gets it, and she was right in hating Fujitaka-sensei for grooming one of his students. She is, of course, great, and I love her. But because the manga won’t let me catch a break, the first lesbian they introduce has to be a woman who was in love with her own cousin. Great!
I’m not sure if I will continue with this series. According to fans, the anime is slightly better because they got rid of the plotline where a teacher gets engaged to his 12-year-old student?! What an achievement!
I get why people might enjoy it for nostalgic reasons, but I am having a hard time trying to understand why some claim it's a classic!
I need to stress again that the art style is adorable, though, and so is Kero. Whenever they didn’t go on about that weird relationship, I did enjoy it, so I hope none of my friends judge me if they see me reading the next book.

➡El arte de las ilustraciones es lo que sin duda me ha enganchado a lo largo del libro con sus toques detallistas y delicados. En cada cuadro se pueden encontrar diversos materiales centrales e importantes por lo que hay que prestar atención para disfrutarlo enteramente.
➡ La trama es ágil y sencilla, enfocada en la vida cotidiana de la protagonista en la escuela primaria Tomoeda, pasando por los recuerdos de la pérdida de su madre a edad temprana, la relación con su hermano y la amistad con su mejor amiga amante de la moda que confecciona sus vestuarios.
Los temas tratados en el libro no ejercen ni requieren ningún tipo de esfuerzo en razonamientos, ya que la narradora es una pequeña de 10 años y la perspectiva es más bien simple. Es un ejemplar ideal para leerle a los más chicxs y para el disfrute de los adultos que quieran adentrarse en las historietas japonesas.
Tal vez conozcan a Sakura por la serie de animé; en mi caso aún no he tenido el placer de hacerlo pero definitivamente la veré luego de leer todos los volúmenes.

the anime for this was on all the time when i was younger and i really enjoyed watching the show, but the manga differs from the anime a bit, which isn’t a bad thing. fist off, the first series is only 6 books, the second one is only six too, and this kind of surprised me at first because the anime had something like 50 episodes, and after reading the manga i saw how much filler was in the anime. the captures in the manga are all major cards (none of the cheap cards like the move card…) and the captures all meant something, meaning they either developed plot or developed character, so if it was not for plot development it was a capture that required some effort, like the water card. on top of this, the manga also has homosexuality in it. nothing explicit, just a character implying that he/ she likes someone of the same sex. people might make a big deal about it here, which is probably why they took it out of the anime, but it’s so subdued and platonic that taking it out is kind of pointless. they basically took it out because they’re afraid of the idea, but as the characters don’t even tell who they like that they like them, as it is a children’s comic book, they’re taking out the homosexuality on principle rather than necessity. and by doing so they lessen the intricacy of the plot development and the connection between the characters, so i’m glad i read the manga for that reason (among others). sakura is a great heroine. i’ve read over 100 mangas, and i’d say that sakura is one of the strongest heroines i’ve read about in manga form. it’s kind of ironic that it’s for kids, but great i suppose. it’s hard to find proactive females in manga. even in the shoujos, the ones focused on girls, the ‘action’ is still left to the guys and the girls are for the most part withering, weak, delicate, know nothings; or if they do fight they are portrayed as kind of heartless. it’s rare to find a happy medium. cardcaptors would be an example of the girl getting some action. overall its a cute manga, i mean those who’ve watched the anime already know the basic story line, its a good one. its an original story and its well told. i recommend.

Por fin pude leerlo en papel y es más hermoso de lo que imaginé. Realmente es una historia que te da vida y esperanza principalmente por Sakura y su resiliencia. Y todos los personajes que se sienten en esta bruma de amor, amistad y compañerismo. Me encanta!

I can’t even express how much I love this series. I watched the anime version of Cardcaptor Sakura when I was younger and it easily became my favorite anime of all time. Recently I found that it was available on Netflix and I decided to watch it for fun, but all my childhood memories came to life stronger than ever. This basically triggered in me a huge desire to read the original manga. I’m very happy to say that my first experience reading manga was very positive and I became even more in love with the story.
In case you don’t know what the story is about, it follows an elementary student named Sakura Kinomoto who accidentally sets free a set of magical cards - each one with it’s only special power and personality - that were guarded by Cerberos. The cards are running free and are causing chaos, so now she is responsible to get them all back and seal them again. With the help of Kero (Cerberus) and her best friend Tomoyo, she begins her mission to bring peace again to her town, Tomoeda.
It was interesting to see that there are a lot of differences between the manga and the anime, but I still think the core of the story was respected and kept. In the manga series we only have nineteen cards, while in the anime we have fifty-two (plus the seal card that only appears in the first Cardcaptor Sakura movie, so fifty-three)! Most of the characters are present in the original work, but there is no mention of Meilin or Wei - contrary to the anime -, so Syaoran travels and lives alone in Japan.
For me, Sakura is one of the best female main characters ever. She was such a huge inspiration to me when I watched the series for the first time, reminding me to always do my best and to be kind to everyone. There were times she was afraid, but that never stopped her from catching the cards and helping her friends. A true queen! Then you have Tomoyo, Sakura’s best friend and cousin… and she is also in love with her. I’m not even going to get started on the amount of incest relationships going on here between cousins because we don’t have an entire day, but I will say I feel bad for the poor girl. She is perfectly okay with Sakura’s love interests, because the most important thing for Tomoyo is her happiness. It was kind of sad that Tomoyo didn’t have her own shot at love, at least with another character. And as a side note, I wish I knew what happened to Tomoyo’s dad, but I know the authors keep it a secret on purpose!
I also found the manga version a little bit more “shocking” than the anime version. They definitely toned down on the animated series when it comes to relationships, because the manga version got crazy sometimes! There are not one, but TWO relationships between adults and elementary students! This was really shocking to see, and even though the first volume came out in 1996 and times were different back then, I still wish the kids kept the relationships within their peers. But what I REALLY wish happened was a bigger development in Touya and Yuki’s relationship! They’re absolutely perfect for each other and I wish they would develop more of their love story here, but to be honest there are not a lot of differences in the anime.
Now the main romance.... where do I even start? Are there even words to describe how perfect it is? This is a true slow burning, innocent and the sweetest romance ever… and all started from rivalry. Things are confusing at first because not only do they start their relationship as rivals on capturing the Clow Cards, but also when it comes to grabbing Yukito’s attention. They are both attracted to him, so the romance between them two only starts to blossom later on, on Syaoran’s side - because Sakura is completely clueless and it’s hilarious! We are presented with a lot of sweet and innocent moments between them, and their romance was definitely one of my favorite things of the manga.
I’m also glad that we get a lot of explanations that are never mentioned in the anime series. For example, we get to know the reason why Sakura feels all HANYAN around Yukito and Mizuki, while Syaoran is only attracted to Yukito. And there is also a major plot twist involving Sakura’s dad that I would never have expected!
I had to take a moment and wonder why I have such a strong love for this series. Sure, I watched the anime when I was younger so it’s natural I have a soft spot for it, but this never happened with any other tv show I watched when I was a kid. I really thought about it, and I realized that the manga is full of a lot of my favorite tropes. There is a strong female heroine who is a regular girl just trying to do her best; there is a slow burn cute romance that started from rivalry; there are a lot of references to yummy food and cakes; there are so many real friendships; there are special, inspiring outfits handmade just to catch the cards; the innocence of it all; and of course… Sakura’s magic is any little girl’s dream.
I swear I could talk about this series forever. I know I’m going to read and reread this for a very long time because I’m so in love with it. And now it’s time for Clear Arc! I confess I’m holding back a bit because the series is not finished yet! I know I will want to finish it in one sitting, so while I wait… I’ll just rewatch the anime ;)

Hermoso!! Todas y cada una de las emociones vividas en mi niñez cuando ví la serie fueron revividas. La verdad aunque quizás en ese entonces no era vista como una serie para niños, a mí me encantó muchísimo y se quedó en mi 🤎.
El carisma, ternura y profunda determinación de Sakura son contagiables en cada capítulo. Todo lo que está en esta serie inspira esperanza, ternura y calma. El amor, como en varios mangas japoneses, son de una radiación delicada y honorable. Cosas que no uno no encuentra en el mundo real pero que dan ganas de crear.
Sakura siempre será mi primer crush literario y con un lugar difícil de reemplazar.
Además, la magia y su sistema es fascinante! Tan bien creado que con su historia me quedé muy corto. Quiero con todo mi ser leer todo el manga y todo lo que haya.

Cet anime, enfant, c’était toute ma vie. Tous les tomes vont avoir 5 étoiles puisqu’ils me replongent dans cet état d’esprit et me redonne envie de la réécouter. Ici, la nostalgie l’emporte!
