Donovan McClintock knows two things about sex. 1.) She wasn’t having enough of it. 2.) She would like to. Sean McAvoy, her overworked fiancé, was more turned on by the sight of their bed than he was by her.
Rather than spend her life rotting in the marital hereafter with a perpetual spooner, Donovan hires an escort for sex lessons to revive her dying relationship. It’s just research she tells herself. Her escort, Alessandro Sorrentini, has other ideas.
Disarmingly handsome and charismatic, Alessandro and his lessons threaten to unravel the relationship Donovan pledged to do anything to save. Donovan is torn between the man she has always wanted and a man she never knew she needed. All she set out to do was to get screwed, but she never meant like this.
I had a serious love/hate relationship with this story (By the way, what does “sexing the noun” mean?) I loved the location (Italy). I loved all the picturesque scenery and culture. I loved Alessandro. I even loved Eloise. But…I hated Donovan. Okay, hate is a very strong emotion never to be used lightly. I didn’t hate Donovan. I just didn’t like her very much-initially. I found her sarcastic, snarky, quick to assume the worst in everything, and at times, downright annoying. But I get it. She was a woman in pain. Not physical pain, but an emotional pain so deep that she convinced herself that 1) She didn’t need help and that she could fix things on her own, and 2) She’d rather be miserable in her comfortable existence than open her eyes to all of the things she’s denied herself for the longest, mainly the love and affection of a good man.
Donovan and her fiancé Sean are living in Italy where she had a job opportunity that quickly fell through, but they stayed and made a life there anyway. Sean is a lawyer working some seemingly menial job at one of the law firms there while Donovan, a writer, is floundering from job-to-job. From the very first page, you know there’s trouble in paradise with these two. The chemistry is non-existent and so is the sex which seems to be all Donovan cares about. It’s bothering her so much that she hires an “escort” to give her lessons in how to please and keep her man. Enter Alessandro. Alessandro is tall, handsome, suave…all those things we imagine a sexy Italian to be. He’s the balm to Donovan’s woes, and she’s feeling him big time, but there’s the issue of Sean.
I was rooting for Alessandro big time to shake some damn sense into Donovan. This chick just irked me to no end. I was even rooting for Sean to dump her and move on (not that I liked Sean. He, too, had his own issues). But you know, I support my fictional sistas, even when they annoy me. I felt sorry for Donovan and wanted her to realize her potential in life. Thank goodness she finally confronted those issues and dealt with them, and accepted the love she deserved. Get swept away in the drama because the locales are just dreamy, and Alessandro is just delicious, wise, romantic, chivalrous, and funny as hell without even trying. He’s everything Sean is not. The dialogue is fresh and witty, and there is also a pretty good supporting cast of characters who are just as hilarious. Very entertaining read because your emotions will be challenged. Now bring on a wedding and some bambinos!
“Sexing the Noun” is the story of Donovan McClintock and Sean McAvoy. They have dated for two years and have been engaged for six months. They move to Florence, Italy, following a dream Donovan has of living and working there. When she can't find work, Donovan enrolls in school to learn the language and meets Eloise. One thing that has fizzled since being in Florence is her sex life. Deciding she will fail in her marriage if she doesn't take drastic measures, she enlists the help of a sex escort Alessandro Sorrentilli and all that Donovan thought she knew and wanted is questioned and so the story begins.
I first was not so taken with this novel, but I kept reading and found it to be a pleasant read. “Sexing the Noun” was a fun novel full of laughs and twists and turns. As I read, I could picture the streets of Florence, the sounds, and the surroundings that were described. Despite hesitation in the beginning, I overall enjoyed reading it and would enjoy more from this author in the future.
Sometimes what you need is not found in what you have but what you venture out to find. Donovan McClintock and Sean McAvoy have dated 2 years engaged for 6 mos and the sparks have left the relationship. She consults with a sex expert to put the sparks back in the relationship but what she finds instead will make you believe in love again. The novel started off slow but became very engaging after awhile and I really began to enjoy the novel. I thought it deserved some editing but overall a pretty decent novel. A strong 3.5 star rating, will look forward to the sequel. I hope Sean and Eloise, Donovan's best friend both find what they are searching for as well.
I wasn't sure if this book was ment to be a comedy or or just turned out that way. It turned out to be a pretty good story. I hope the next book finds love for Sean and Eloise. ( Not together) Characters were interesting and there were a few typo's but nothing outrageous. Keep up the good work
I enjoyed this book. It had real plot twists and realistic problems that people experience in relationships. The author is detailed and provides vivid description to show the reader to connect to the characters in the story. Good and easy read.
