THIS REVIEW CONTAINS EVERY SPOILER IMAGINABLE! I promise you will not have missed anything but saved trauma and anger, but you've been warned nonetheless.

Problem: Who Are The MCs?

I'm at 23% and I'm not even sure I've met the FMC yet.



Way too many characters going through revolving door POVs.

Chapter one: Ava Marshall and two psychos.

Chapter two: Mila Stevenson, sheriff Brady, Joan the diner owner, a gardener.

Chapter three: the sheriff, deputy Sam Ridley, and Sarah the sheriff assistant.

Chapter four: Gwyn Woods, Joan at the diner, and the sheriff.

Chapter five: Claire Baxtor and the two psychos from chapter one.

Chapter six : Gwyn Woods, Brady, and Hailey Ridley.

Etc..

Problem: All-knowing Third-Person POV In A Suspense

Ava is the POV in chapter one. She's dead by chapter two.

Dead.

I don't want a POV from someone who's violently and graphically sexually and physically assaulted for AN ENTIRE CHAPTER , who we hear her inner fear and fight within the last word of the chapter.... And then, in chapter two, I'M TOLD by some other character that she died 2 months ago. Thanks for that unnecessary trauma. Not to mention that this is an absurd position for the suspense of the book.

Two more times of an all-knowing POV from characters in their moment of death.

1. Percy, a secondary character with a tiny role, has a POV out of nowhere in chapter 10. One minute he is telling us about how it may be time to man up and ask some other secondary character out and the next he's fucking shot in the chest.

Not only does this feel asinine to the reader, it fucks your suspense when later it's unveiled that the victim was close with the killer and would've recognized a friend's car and/or said, hey, {insert name} upon seeing him.

2. In chapter 14, Hailey has a POV of her final fighting moments with the psycho killer. Again, she knows the killer very well and doesn't utter his name in conversation.

I DO NOT want a POV for the sole purpose of giving me a brief glimpse inside their mind before they DIE, especially when they know the mofo killer and say nothing at all in shock or recognition.

Problem: Melodrama Is Pissed!


The Hailey storyline as a hole whole was the worst attempt at melodrama I've ever read. I'm serious it was so out of fucking place & disproportionate that melodrama would spray this shit with...



Up until Hailey is kidnapped in chapter 14, her role is new friend to the FMC & wife of one of the MMC's deputies. Aside from her death-rattle POV scene, she might've had 6-8 dialogue lines of non-importance IN THE ENTIRE BOOK, mostly about how she wanted to have a baby.

Yet...

We suffer TWO chapters 100% on how everyone is dealing with her kidnapping -&- then AN ENTIRE CHAPTER ON HER FUNERAL ... where we have to suffer monologues about how fucking wonderful she was, how her husband is going to get that puppy she always wanted, what's on her tombstone, an intro to all her family, how the FMC didn't know her but a week but is so devastated over her death, blah, blah, blah.

Oh, least I forget about how her medical exam showed she finally got that pregnancy she'd been after. Too bad she's fucking dead. I know I needed to know that.

Problem: All Characters Get A POV.

I don't think there was a character in the book that didn't get an inner thought POV, right down to the owner of a restaurant giving her perspective on a scene between the MCs.



Problem: None Of The Plot Points Were Researched.

Brady is trying to solve Ava's murder. Two weeks after her body is discovered, he just now is noticing that her face is the only part of her body not desecrated. Great detective work, huh?

Anyway...

He asks his assistant if her abused friend ever got hit in the face by her abusive husband. The assistant says yes. That equals...

"He was right, Ava's face being untouched was a key piece of evidence. Pricks that like to inflict pain, they don't care where it is as long as they are exerting their power and dominance."

Yes, this is fiction. However, I no more want to read a book that tells me the earth really is flat , than a book misrepresenting abuse facts.

While some abusers, particularly those fueled by alcohol, really don't give two shits about what they hit, most abusers purposefully avoid the face and any other area NOT typically covered by clothes. They don't fucking advertise that they are abusers! They hide it. If the author didn't know this, a simple bit of research could inform her...

"

Problem: Brady Is A Cheeseball.

There are men, such as...



... who can say sugar 44 times and darlin' 32 times in a book and not sound like a mofo used car salesman. Sheriff Alpha Magoo...



...is not one of them.

"That's the whole point of a date, sugar."

"Got it, darlin'?"

"As the saying goes... I'm the law in the town, sugar."

Problem: I'd Like To Slap Fuck Outta These Dipsticks.

Example one...

Her: Hey, my ex beat me and tried to kill me. I ran.

Him: I'll kill that fucker if I ever see him. Thanks for trusting me. I love you. I love that ass, sugar. Now, let's fuck.

Her: I want to suck your dick.

Him: I want to fuck your mouth but I can't be gentle.

Her: Oh, please don't be gentle because I'm not emo at all over telling you two pages ago that my ex use to beat fuck outta me.



Example two...

One date and two nights together. She goes back to her apartment. He comes home wondering why she's not in his kitchen cooking. He flips.

"Her apartment door crashed open, bouncing off the wall once." "He stomped over to her and got in her face."

You can pause and wonder why the fuck the abused FMC isn't spending more than ONE sentence questioning this before concluding a man she's known a week would never hurt her. I'm too busy searching Google Earth for the cave this dumb fuck MMC must've been trapped in for the last millennium.

Problem: He's A Half-breed Alpha Magoo

He has no problem shutting up the FMC from even considering running away from him. Any time she thinks of arguing with him, he quickly and alpha'esc'ly uses his hands and mouth to convey two words: You're Mine!

Yet...

Despite having just told the FMC he loves her and all his Alpha Magoo skills with the FMC....

When his ex shows up and slithers around on his desk and lap as she puts her hands all over him, he can't seem to manage to use his alpha'esc hands to remove her from his fucking lap and his mouth to convey two words: Fuck Off!

Problem: From Man Hate To Desire In Two Seconds Flat.

She arrives swearing all men all evil. To be avoided.



She locks eyes with Brady and every thought that follows....

"...burn of desire.."
"Her desire for him was so thick...."
"..bolt of lightening of desire..."
"..crackling energy of desire."
"..the fire of desire..."
".. the moisture of her desire there.."

She seems him = desire, lust, squirming, fidgeting.
She hears him = desire, lust, squirming, fidgeting.
He touches her = desire, lust, squirming, fidgeting.

One date and two nights later ...

Love You!!!!!!

Oh. Okay.

Problem: Sheriff Alpha Magoo Is 98 Cents Short Of a Buck.



No, boo, that was your brain kidnapped.

He can't recognize his parent's address? Not to mention, WTF kinda NY POLICE station wouldn't recognize its' captain's address?

"...my dream to make Captain, to follow in my dad's footsteps.

"A call came into the station one day, a distress call. I thought I was man enough to handle it on my own... I - I didn't call for backup and I responded on my own. I was a cocky and arrogant little fuck. By the time I was at the destination, I realized too late that it was my parent's house the call had come from.

Problem: Psycho Killer And Brady Could Be Twins

"Darlin', just look at you. Quite the perfect picture you make. Why, you look like a feast. My feast."

Sugar, there's an expression... Maybe you've heard of it. Makes your blood run cold. You know, I've been on a mission, trying to find cold blood that runs out from a warm body.

Problem: FMC Is 98 Cents Short, Too.

"Are you fucking crazy? I'm not Buffy, and just because you have a badge and a gun, doesn't mean you're one of the Winchester brothers. If we go after this psycho alone, he will end us."

Sheriff Alpha Magoo himself can't even understand this bitch.

"What the fuck are you talking about?" As I just said, I'm the Sheriff, not some 'brother.' And we aren't going after him, I am."

Problem: Is This An Episode of Scooby Doo?

Hands down the most absurd plot I've ever had the displeasure of reading.

• the FMC, knowing Hailey all of ONE week, knows intimate details like her favorite fucking flower & declares shit like:

"Hailey is the strongest woman I have ever met. She will fight and she will find a way home. I know it."

• the FBI thinks the FMC knowing Hailey drinks coffee in morning could be vital info in her kidnapping.

• "A call just came in. A tip. A suspicious character was spotted out near the swamp."

No~ not a suspicious character near the swamp. Tuck me in and call Mr. Alpha Magoo ASAP!



• Brady Logic 101: a methodical, smart psycho = must be a cop. And, if one of your eight cops are dead, leaving seven; you exclude yourself leaving six; and you see that one name of the six cops is on all four of the murder reports and was the only one missing after his fellow cop died (wait, if he was missing, then how's he on that report) ... Anyway, well, that must be your fucking killer and the thing to do is to order the FBI to go pick his "armed and extremely dangerous" ass up (yeah, they're you're bitches cause you're Sheriff Alpha Magoo. )



• More Brady Logic 101: Oh, no, the FBI accidentally told the FMC that the ex was sitting on your lap and FMC ran away. Sheriff Alpha Magoo instinctively knows to translate this bit of info into : Holllllllly Fuck, she might have been kidnapped. When he gets to his house and discovers all her clothes are still there and deducts "she hadn't been there," what does he do? What any sheriff would do to a place that his angry girlfriend HASNT even been...

"This is Sheriff James. I need a unit to my home address now. Tape it off as a crime scene and dust for prints."

He'd send a unit to his unmolested house, not send them out scavenging for.. Oh, I don't know... HER. Brady logic is ingenious, right?

Off he goes to where she works. Low and behold, the owner found the FMC's shoe in a splatter of blood in the alley. I think that might be something I'd call the cops about vs having to "lead" the cop that happened to show up through the restaurant to the alley. Hum?



• FMC sees the killer and her first words are:

" Rims. You? You're behind all this?"

Now, isn't that funny that Rim's fellow deputy and friend didn't have those first words as he was being shot? Hailey must've suffered the same amnesia looking at her killer... ie her husband's coworker.



• Sheriff Alpha Magoo thinks that the FBI "compiling a profile" on the serial killer is a waste of time ...

"They were acting like this was an episode of Criminal Minds."

• Hum, if only Alpha Magoo had the magic Mystery Machine Van to take him to the secret hide out it could all be over. Hell, why didn't I think of calling Dora The Explorer & her handy map!!! Mystery solved!



• Uh-oh, there's only six of us and two side-kick FBI agents left and I need four teams. Hum, I know!! I'll collect a mob of town folk consisting of the the first victim's lawyer DAD; Earl, the cook at the diner; and some Mr. Bartlett dude. Now, if you're wondering about the FBI agents, they haven't said a word. Not. A. Word. Okay.



• Rims and his mentor. Apparently blood lust and psychotic behavior can just suddenly appear out of the wild blue. Ain't been a murder in decades in this sleepy little hell hole until all of a fucking sudden these two natives just decide they like to cut people up and drink their blood.



• Dundumdado to the rescue. Chick has been with psychos for at least 24 hours and had injuries severe enough that she will stay in the hospital three days, and these are his first words to her post-rescue:

"We've got to get you to the hospital, sugar. You look like hell."

Problem: If This Is Edited, I'd Have Hated To See The Original.

It needs an editor. It needs a different editor. Example:

"From Hailey's shocking confession about the murders in town to the mind {-} blowing sex-a-thon her {she} and Brady had ; {,} a lot had happened in 24 hours.

The End

Please do tell me how the f'ing SOB ending is a "standalone?"

One of the two psycho killers "slips out through a secret door." I'm gonna skip the eyeroll meme and get to the point. THE BAD CHICK ESCAPES!!! Not, only does she escape, she is pregnant. Given she's the MMC's ex and their relationship was within the past nine months, it could be his?!?! THE FUCKING END.

Oh, the series is complete. Guess it is a standalone... It's just a shitty one with an even shittier ending.

Well, gee, thanks.



Bottom Line

Traumatic. Painful. Awful.

Is this review harsh? No. It's blunt. It's honest. It's real. The plot is a mess. The characters are a mess. The writing itself is a mess. Writers can't grow if they don't know the extent and truth of the problem. Yes, dumbassary brings out my sarcasm. Tit for tat.




But, that doesn't negate the truth behind it.

Oh boy. Once again I’m in the minority here rating this novel a low score.

After reading the first couple of chapters and enjoying it, I thought I had picked a winner as it started off so great. I was already thinking four stars in my head. However, as I read on that quickly changed to three stars, then two, and then finally one. Thanks to a city blackout that occurred last evening that lasted several hours after I turned in for the night, I thought more about my review only to realize it was incomplete. I won't lie, there were several eye rolls and WTF?! moments that could not be helped. Now if you’re planning to read this novel, please DO NOT read on as I am going to spill the beans on a few things; meaning SPOILER ALERT.

Let me just start with what I liked about the novel.

- It started off with a bang. You couldn’t help but get sucked in as the author weaved a terrific tale about a serial killer.

- The story is told from several POV's; Gwyn, Brady, and the killer, just to name a few. The chapters that were of the killer's and victims' POV were the best ones in my opinion. The author does a great job keeping the reader in suspense as to who the killer actually is. With a few twists and turns thrown in, it was quite a surprise when I reached the end.

- I actually liked all the supporting characters, including Brady's ex Mila, a total bitch.

Now for all the WTF?! moments.

After being on road for a few months, Gwyn (heroine) ends up in, Durham Heights, a small town in Louisiana. She left Chicago after being in an abusive (emotional and physical) relationship for three years to start a new life.

“Handsome men were the enemy; that was a lesson she had learned well.”

“Don’t make eye contact, don’t make a connection. She repeated the words in her head as she made her way over, her curiosity getting the best of her. It was one thing to engage with Joan, the older woman’s welcome had filled her with an instant feeling of peace and safety. But men…attention from them was not something she was looking for.”

Well that lasted all of five minutes. The second her eyes land on Sheriff Brady James, Gwyn is ready to jump his bones. This is where everything starts to fall apart for me. The very next day Brady demands a dinner date with her.

““Seven tonight, Gwyn. Don’t make me wait for you,” his arrogant tone pricked her anger and just as she opened her mouth to tell him just how long he’d be waiting for her, he leaned in and lowered his voice. “I can’t wait to taste you.” WTF?!

And just like that, Gwyn has a date the very next day, one which she’s really looking forward to with a man she feels “safe” with even though she knows next to nothing about him except that he’s the town sheriff and absolutely gorgeous. WTF?! (Note: The author makes a reference to Gwyn knowing him for a “few days,” which I think is incorrect. However, if I’m in the wrong, my apologies.) There’s a lot of sexual heat sizzling between them on their date, none of which scares Gwyn. In fact, she’s so comfortable with him she doesn’t protest when he places his hand on her knee for the duration of the car ride, or when he orders dinner for her. Later they make out in the car, and then move into her apartment where things start to really get hot and heavy.

Gwyn - “I need you—please, just fuck me.” WTF?!

I guess Brady slipping a finger in her panties isn’t enough for her. WTF?!

I’m sorry folks but all of this comes across as totally unrealistic. I find it hard to believe that a woman who just left an abusive relationship of three years where her ex controlled every aspect of her life, would let another man, no matter how good looking he is, do the same. I cannot be the only one who thinks this??

- After making out in the car and walking her to her door, because Brady doesn’t kiss her right away she starts thinking she’s not worthy of him. This I can understand. However, it doesn’t work here as it’s beyond obvious to everyone how badly Brady wants her.

““You are mine. This ass is mine,” he ground out, gripping her cheeks tightly. “This mouth is mine,” his lips crashed down on hers, stealing her breath. “If I want to fuck you, I will. If I want you to suck my cock, you will. If I want to devour that sweet little pussy of yours - I will.” His words were a lightning bolt to her core, igniting the passion between them. As his hips began to move against her, she let out a loud moan and pulled his lips back to hers.”

WTF?!

As much as this is a turn on, why Gwyn doesn’t even bat an eye at this makes no sense. Sorry, so stupid of me. She wants Brady bad and if that means giving into his demands, so be it because he’s so good-looking. Serious eye-rolls here. Again, this just doesn’t work when you consider Gwyn’s past relationship.

- Guess what happens next? I’ll give you a hint, it’s includes three little words. Yep, the “I love you” is declared by both just days later. WTF?! Not only do I detest the instalove, I hate it even more when the heroine has a past such as Gwyn’s.

- There’s a serial killer on the loose. He grabs a female after stalking her for a few days, holds her in a basement cuffed to chains and begins his torture that lasts for weeks. The police and FBI agents have no leads as to who’s taking them or where the women are being held. When Gwyn is grabbed by the killer (like you didn’t see that one coming), it turns out there’s a building five miles outside of town that’s not marked on any of the updated maps. It’s by chance the police came across the old maps. I’d like to know how not one cop or FBI agent never thought to look at abandoned buildings close to town. You’d think with all the volunteers looking for the missing women someone would’ve come across the building at some point. Has no one ever driven past it? Is the building so small it’s not noticeable? Is it hidden behind trees? Is there no one in town who once worked there? It’s only five miles outside of town. Five miles! Did they stop searching when they reached the town limits? WTF?! This is absolutely ridiculous. All it does is prove how inept and stupid they all are. My head hurts from rolling my eyes and shaking my head so much.

In the end this was not a hit in my eyes. Considering this is a big hit with a lot of readers, I leave it to your discretion whether to read this novel or take a pass. With all the positive reviews, the chances of you liking or even loving the novel is quite possible.

I’m more than positive many of you will disagree with what I wrote, or think I’m nuts. That’s fine. You’re entitled to your opinion and I respect that. Just remember that I’m also entitled to my opinion and ask that you respect it. If there’s anyone who feels like discussing the novel, or my review like an adult, I’d be more than happy to.

One last thing. The author contacted me to thank me for my honest review, and asked that I not write her off. So respectful of my review, I can honestly say that I will read book 2 in the "Darkness" series. I thank Ms. Brightmore for going out of her way to contact me.

Malevolent was a different direction from what I usually go for in reads. I’m normally not into dark reads, probably because I don’t care for angsty or heavy themes it, but this one piqued my interest.

In a setting all about starting over, a sinister lurking in the background, and highlighted in suspense, I couldn’t help but feel as if anything was a go. Especially with a killer on the loose, a sexy cop heroine trying to catch him/her before they strike again, and a tumultuous whirlwind romance taking place. It was quite an interesting set up and fascinating turn of events all up in one.

Cassia Brightmore was a new author to me, but as of now, no more. I will definitely be checking into her and keeping up with her and this series.

I can’t see where she takes this series next, as it kept me intrigued, on my feet, and constantly surprised.

Wonderful read!

Going into the book I had something really different envisioned but reading it just blew my mind. It was great, it was dark I kinda seem like I'm insane. The prologue is the thing that sucked me in, and I loved it. I mean it took me back but I couldn't stop reading. It was an addiction that I didn't nor wanted to stop.

This is a great dark read.

Sheriff Brady James is one hell of a sexy hero. Like every women in this book I was also captivated by him, and wanted him and his dirty mouth. The thing I didn't like was it was insta-love between him and the heroine. It was like 0 to 60 in like 2 chapters but other than that it was amazing.

And for a debut novel the writing is spectacular. I seriously can't wait for the secnd book in the series and I'm hoping its more dark and sinister.

“That’s it baby, bleed for me.”

The story is told from a third person narration with alternating points of view. The books I’ve read recently were written in first person narrative so this took me a while to get used to. But once I got into it, I was into it.

The author goes to the dark side of humanity and she caught the essence perfectly. Meaning, the psychopath here isn’t humanized. In many books the bad guy still manages to get you to feel the littlest bit of sympathy but not here. The psychopath is a monster plain and simple. No chance at redemption.

Knowing that about our bad guy, you can tell that Sheriff Brady has quite the task ahead of him. It’s made even more difficult when women are throwing themselves at him…readers not included. Just kidding, everyone (in the book) does seem to notice how hunky the man is. Even I have to admit he’s pretty good book boyfriend material. When he goes after a woman there’s no stopping him. He’s possessive, protective, intense and has a wicked mouth. By now the uniform is just an added bonus.



There are two main love interests for him, one is spoiled as hell and I just want her to go away…she’s the kind of character that will make you want to throw your e-reader at a wall. Or drag her out of the book and punch her in the face. The other is the exact opposite. She’s on a path to rebuild her life and she works hard for it too.

I don’t want to say too much, I fear I might give things away that really should be kept secret in case you decide to pick it up yourself. All I can say is that not everyone is who they appear to be and that I liked reading this book. Malevolent has mystery, it has gore and it has some heart wrenching moments. I especially like the gore, wish there was more of it though. I did have times where I wondered why none of the big agencies came to help. I’m thinking Criminal Minds kind of guys. But it’s a small town, maybe no one cares…



Okay, maybe that’s a bit harsh. Apart from that moment is there just one thing that I didn’t like and that was the instant love thing. Lust I can understand but love…that transition was just a little too quick for me. And that’s why my rating falls a little lower.

Let me preface this review by saying I NEVER, EVER read a book written in third person. Usually, if a book is recommended to me that's third person POV or I purchase one and open it to see that it is, I DNF then. Generally speaking, third person POV isn't emotional or personal enough for me to connect with the characters.

Having said that, I'm so glad that I gave Malevolent the fighting chance. This book did NOT disappoint in any way, whatsoever! Malevolent has so many twists and turns, you'll get whiplash just swiping your finger gently across the Kindle screen. This story is deep, well thought out with amazingly likable characters. There is so much happening in this book, that reading it from one or two first person POV wouldn't have given the reader a clear insight to the depth of the story. I felt as if there was some dark shadow lurking about, watching the citizens of Durham Heights closely, commentating the scene before him as he saw it from his very eyes. I didn't feel as if I was being told a story, as with most third person books. The way Cassia narrated the book, gave the reader and fresh and vivid sight to every thing happening. I felt as if I was peering over the dark shadowed narrator's shoulder, watching the residents carry on through the story.

I was awestruck by the suspense. I LOVE romantic suspense novels, and not once did I have an inkling as to what would happen next. Cassia keeps you truly blinded by the truth right up til the very end, where you're mouth will drop, your eye will bulge and several obscenities will slide from your tongue. Brady James-swoooooooon! I swear I could just read Darlin' and Sugar and be putty in that man's hands. He is so perfect, all Alpha, sexy and controlling in the sexiest and sweetest ways! His job as Sheriff is to serve and protect, and let's just say that little ole' Gywn Woods sure is one lucky little darlin'!

Wow just WOW! I can't say I don't have words to explain more like I don't know which words to use! It was spectacular! If you like dark and dangerous lust and suck twisted freaks then omg you so want to read this!! Malevolent was magnificent! I mean hot damn! I've read some dark and twisted romance books but this, this just takes it there and beyond and Sheriff Brady?! Well let me just tell you every girl wants a slice of that cake! No, you will want the whole cake and still lick the frosting clean off the plate afterwards!! Ya he's that scanned yummy! Now there are some spots that will make you laugh, some spots that will make you cringe, spots that may make your stomach ill but you will not be able to stop reading and seeing each page come to life in this deliciously wicked twisted book!! And the end?! Well prepare to be shocked!! Author Cassia Brightmore is gonna rise to the top faster than you can blink if she keeps releasing books this good! Hell this book is the most amazing thing I've read so far this year! The shock factor swear to you your jaw will drop when you hit that pivotal moment! A MUST READ!!

Before I dive into my thoughts this was a great debut. The author has an engaging and interesting writing style and created a world full of both lovable and malevolent characters. I enjoyed reading about Gwyn the most, she was almost like Sookie Stackhouse. Gwyn was a genuine and lovable character through and through. However, I think the Southern aspect of this book was overdone- there was just TOO much where it didn’t seem natural in my opinion.

Also, I feel this novel was marketed incorrectly. I read almost strictly dark romance and dark erotica and this was neither. The romance was completely separate from any dark element and the “darkness” played a very small part in the background. About 60% of the book was setting up the scene and then it was over. No mind f*ck, no sudden twist. I would’ve liked more insight into the killer’s mind and motives: when the killer was revealed I didn’t feel anything- who was h/she? Why?

Furthermore, there was so much emphasis put on Gwyn’s past. She was terrified of an abusive boyfriend- but he never found her… was he looking? Why so much devotion to the topic when it played no real part in the story minus a few paragraphs in the first chapter? *sigh*

Now I must mention the prologue/first chapter…DAMNNNN that was intense! The author wrote one hell of a scene in the killer’s perspective…I just wish there was MORE of that throughout.

Overall this was a good read~ unfortunately not the read for me but I would still recommend it to other readers who enjoy sweet Southern romance, a hot alpha male, and some thrills along the way.

WOW, where do I even start with this review? I'm still in shock from reading this and I'm smiling because I just can't believe that this book was able to make me feel so much. It's really hard to review this one without spoilers but I hate spoilers so I'm going to try my best here to post the reasons why YOU should READ this book without giving anything away.

First of all: the writing is flawless, Cassia shocked the hell out of me. I wasn't expecting a new author to be able to convey such emotions on her work. Literally everything Ms. Brightmore wrote gave me feels. Usually my friends call me the grammar police bc minor mistakes really bother me but not in the case of Cassia. The writing flowed greatly!
#2: Brady is a HOT Alpha male who's sexy not only in bed but also outside. I love men in uniform so I'm biased at that but off uniform? This character was STILL hot.
#3: usually when there's an alpha male authors write the heroine as a wuss that just does what the alpha wants. Well not in this case. Nope. Not with Cassia. I can honestly say that Gwynn is one of my favorite heroines ever written. She is badass.
#4: I don't know about you but secondary characters are super important to me and Cassia was able to deliver in that department. I am absolutely, positively in LOVE with Deputy SAM. (Seriously I want to have his babies) and I also wouldn't mind rolling around the garden with Alejandro. Oh and Hailey? She's a great friend to the heroine and she kicks butt.
#5: the book keeps you guessing. There's so many surprises thrown at you that at moments you're like"HOLY COW did that just happen?" I LOOOOVEEE when a book can do that.

I can go on and on about the reasons why you should read this book but then this review will never end. The point is, EVERYONE should read this flawless piece of art. This book will grab you from beginning and not let you go until you've finished it. I can honestly say that Cassia has a fan in me. I can't wait for book two and I'm hoping to see more of my new book husband Deputy Sam in the second book.

I was expecting a very dark, deep, suspenseful story. The 1st chapter absolutely delivered on these assumptions and I couldn't wait to start this book!
Unfortuntately, the story wasn't what I had hoped for.

Sheriff Brady James (sexy and absolute Alpha male) is trying to piece together the murder of a young female resident of Durham Heights, LA - with no luck. He has no time for menial things such as relationships.
Gwyn is on the run, she's looking to start a new life far away from the abusive relationship she left behind in Chicago. Skittish and nervous, she stops in a small town in Louisiana and finds that the diner is looking for help (perfect!). Within 5min of being hired and given a place to stay, she starts to relax (just a bit) while avoiding any eye contact with men.
Sheriff Brady James just happens to enter the diner at that time, and instantly Gwyn feels his presence. He approaches her and the "connection" is there, although she is still apprehensive about it.

The romantic storyline between these two characters is predictable, the insta-love (1.5 dates) is unbelievable considering she's frightened of men, and the sex is just ok. The majority of this story was them getting to know one another, but I never felt the chemistry and found myself frustrated with most of their interactions.
The main feature of the story is the murders, we know there is a sadistic killer from chapter 1, but we don't know who or why. This is the fun part of reading suspense stories - piecing together the information and trying to figure out who/what/why. Unfortunately, I felt like the romance aspect was the main focus (which I didn't enjoy, personally) and the suspense took a back seat. There weren't many details to match up - just girls, eventually ones that we got to know, showing up -dead.

I will say that this story was written well, but it just wasn't for me.

First of all, let me say it's hard to believe this is Cassia's debut novel, you'd never know, once you pick it up. We are first given a very intriguing prologue, you want to know what it means!! Then straight to chapter 1, we taken into one girls nightmare & we get a glimpse into who Malevolent is.

We meet Gwyn Woods, who has moved to Durham Heights, to escape her old life & get away from her ex in Chicago. She was meant to stay only the night, but gets a job at the town diner & moves into a small apartment thanks to the kind Joan, who runs the diner with her husband. Then Gywn meets Sheriff Brady James, the very alpha, hot sheriff & it was love at first sight, once he saw her 'Mine'. Love that in my protective alphas! Then we have Mila, the town 'Princess' who thinks she's in love with Brady, & thinks she above everyone in town, can we say spoiled?!? And she was so rude to Gwyn, I just wanted to smack her. Once Brady & Gywn start dating, he wants to leave her in the dark & not let her know what has been going on in the town, but when another victim turns up, he has no choice. Gwyn, I loved her, she was a great heroine, she just had the vibe of one of your girlfriends, & you wanted her to find her peace.

We are taken into the mind of a truly sick, sadistic, evil person, who has a true blood lust, who is terrorizing the whole town & once one of their own is taken, the whole book shifts. Will they be rescued? Will Brady & Gwyn get their HEA? Is someone sabotaging their relationship? You will find out this & so much more when you read this book.

Once we learned who Malevolent was, I was so shocked, then we found out who his 'mentor' is, I was like OMG I did not see that coming ;). Good play Cassia. And THAT ending?!?!
This book had everything, it was frightening, sexy, engaging, sad, emotional, passionate, & twisty. Overall this book was one big mind-fuck & I loved it!! Cassia, I loved your writing girl & thank you for letting me read it!! Can't wait to see what you do next.

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review...... I finished this book last night after spending almost all afternoon reading it. With taking minor breaks to try to process it all. I was left reeling after it ended and felt that I needed to sleep before I wrote a review. I wanted to do this book justice, and well honestly I don't think that I can even convey how good it was in a review. I was intrigued by this book from the very first teaser that I saw and once I got my hands on it it did not disappoint. I kept finding ways to try to read it during my busy day, on bathroom break at work, in the waiting room of the doctors office, heck even in the exam room while waiting for the doctor to come in. I needed to know what was going on, everything about this book sucked me in. The characters grabbed me every single one of them. Usually I get sucked in by the main characters and have some connection to side characters. But in this book Cassia really drew you in to every single one. It's like I could've lived in that small town myself and known all of them. As I was being twisted along trying to solve this mystery I was also falling in love with Sheriff Brady James, and getting a massive girl crush on Gwyn, wanting Hailey to be my bff, and wishing I could have a marriage like Sam & Hailey. Heck I even wanted to be a waitress at Earl's. And by the end I was left emotionally wrecked, yet deeply satisfied that I got to read such an amazing book. If this is how Cassia comes out with a debut book, I can't even imagine how her next ones will be but man am I chomping at the bit to get my hands on them as soon as I possibly can.

I had to read this book once I saw the COVER!!! Yes I judge a book by its cover, and this cover was eye-catching but the story was amazing. Malevolent took me on a thrilling suspenseful Sexy Dark ride with unexpected twists that I never saw coming. The story was so well detailed I was so absorbed in the book that I couldn't put it down until I was finished. I loved everything about Malevolent! Oh wow! Cassia Brightmore has done it! She's written a sexy, suspenseful book that will pull in even the most reluctant reader. Take a quick look through most of the books on my lists and you'll see that dark romance is not my usual genre. I like things light and I certainly don't like to be scared but Cassia's debut novel walked the fine line between romance and thriller and was masterful enough to keep even a wimp like me enthralled.

Women are disappearing from Durham Heights Louisiana and turning up weeks later, brutally murdered. Sheriff Brady James is focused on trying to find the killer and put his gruesome past behind him. After a brief fling with the town princess Mila, he has no room for romance in his life. Gwyn Woods is putting distance between herself and a bad relationship when she arrives in Durham Heights. When she stops at the quintessential small town diner, Earl's, Gwyn and Brady's lives intersect and sparks fly immediately. As the search for the killer amps up so to does the heat between Brady and Gwyn.

Brightmore does an excellent job keeping you guessing throughout the entire book. You're not sure who the killer is and no character, no matter how beloved, is safe. With so many twists and turns you'll be turning the pages as quickly as possible to find out whodunnit.

Prepare yourself before you read, the dark scenes are dark and graphic but they are artfully balanced with romance and comedy. Brady, Gwyn and the entire cast of characters are well rounded. The dialogue is witty and intelligent, you'll want to hang out with Gwyn and make googly eyes at Brady.

I'm the last person that likes to be scared, but I guarantee that if you stick with this book you'll love it as much as I did. Cassia Brightmore's debut novel is excellent and I look forward to reading more from her in the future.

As soon as I saw teasers for Malevolent, I wanted to read it because I love dark books and this one looked particularly dark. I added it to my TBR and when we got the sign up to review it, I jumped at the chance. I was a little worried about it, I admit, because the synopsis made me think it was going to be a love triangle, but my desire to read it quickly overrode that worry and the fact that said it was a standalone didn't hurt either. I'm very glad that I didn't let anything get in the way because it wasn't as love triangley as I thought and it was a great book!

Sheriff Brady James is one HOT hero! He's everything that I love in my heroes: possessive, protective, dominant, faithful, caring, loving, and true. He's undeniably good and what you see with him is what you get. Brady is just a total bada*s, quite a commanding dirty talker, and I loved him for it all!

Malevolent is definitely a dark thriller, but the atmosphere isn't dark all the time. It's full of heat, mystery, menace, heartbreak, and love. Ms. Brightmore will have your heart racing while squeezing it half to death, she'll make you cry, make you happy, and keep you guessing. This was a fabulous debut novel; I loved it, and I'm very excited it to read the next book in this series!!!

Malevolent is told from multiple points of view and while James and his heroine are together, this story is far from over. ~ Paige, 4.5 stars

I wish I could give this book more than five stars.
It blows my mind to know that this is the debut book for this author.
The way the story was told, and the characters brought to life.

This book captivated me from the first sentence.
There were a lot of WTF moments and the tears that came with it.

We have Gwyn who is running from her past and needing a safe place away from her abusive ex and then we have sexy, hunky, Sheriff Brady who is also running from his past as he tries to hide from the sadness of it.

Brady must have Gwyn and she is scared of all men but she senses something different about him.
As their love grows, terror and fear is all around them.
There is a murderer on the loose and no one in the police department can figure out who is doing it.
This murderer has killed two women and a police officer before Hailey who is married to an officer and loved in the town is taken.
They have exhausted every lead in hopes of finding her alive.
The FBI has stepped up in their attempts to help in finding her.

Will they find her in time?
Will they be shocked to find out who is behind the murders>
Will Gwyn be safe or is she a target?

This book has it all, love, hot sex, and suspense.
This book will keep you on your toes.

I really liked Malevolent by Cassia Brightmore. A first time reader of her work I was pleasantly surprised by her 1st book.

Gwyn is on the run from a bad boyfriend, she ends up in a quaint quiet town. Meeting a sweet woman who owns a diner, offers her a job and an apartment. She falls into the homeliness of the town. Unknown to Gwyn, Sheriff Brady is investigating a horrible murder of a young girl. Taken tortured and raped.

When she meets the hot sexy sheriff in the diner sparks fly. Her need to stay away from men is put to the test. Instant lust, chemistry. As they become friendly her walls come down. But there is still a deranged killer on the loose and another girl is taken.

There are so many twist and turns in this book. Cassia Brightmore weaves a book where you will be questioning every person as a possible suspect. I mean EVERYONE!!!!!

I was riveted page to page. Warning there are very DARK scenes so be weary if you don't like that type of stuff.

My only knock was the ending felt rushed. It was climactic but I wish it was dragged out just a little more.

Two words MIND. BLOWN! This book was something I've never read before. I couldn't have imagined a world like this. The fact it came out of Cassia's head, INSANE. Have you seen her? It's always the innocent looking ones .... ;)

This book was intense. The mystery, suspense, love, hate....it was amazing. I was on edge the entire book. From the beginning to the end, I was in it and wouldn't, COULDN'T put it down till I was done. For a debut novel, Cassia struck gold!

Ok let's just say we started off dark and I'm a huge lover of dark as twisty! Wow hooked me right in . Murders kidnapping oh I'm enjoying this. We have a new girl in town hot sheriff token bitch of course every book has one. Well yes it could have been darker it didn't stay as dark but the twisted yes it's there the story was great I enjoyed it. I'm not normally a lover of third party POV however this worked. We see into the minds of our new Girl Gwyn our Hottie Sheriff Brady,the victims and the killers. Great debut looking forward to more form our new Author.

The beginning of this book really got my attention. It was dark and intriguing I thought this is going to be really good.
Then everything kind of fell off for me. This story could of been so much more.

The characters development needed a little work. I did not feel a connection between Gwen and Brady at all.
Their relationship happened at such a such a fast pace It did not seem real.

Will I read more from this author? Definitely I'm not giving up on this author. Cassia Brightmore shows a lot of potential with her debut novel Malevolent.

Malevolent is the debut novel from author Cassia Brightmore. I had the amazing opportunity to be given an ARC copy of this story and my head is still spinning from the vivid and detailed world Miss Brightmore has imagined. Where can I even begin writing about this book. From the very first word we are pulled into such an amazingly written story. This book was an emotional rollercoaster for me. There is laughter, love, violence and gore. There were more emotional ups and downs than I could count and it kept my fingers flying across the pages, I had to know what came next. I devoured this book until I was literally begging for more. I cried ugly, loud tears where I had to stop reading as I could no longer see the words in front of me. I had intense rage and anger while being introduced to the most dark and sadistic killer I have ever come across ( and coming from a horror movie junkie I have come across more than a few). I found myself white-knuckled holding tight to my Kindle at times, praying things would work out the way I hoped. Every time I thought I had figured out just where Cassia was taking me, she pulled the rug out from under me and ran in the opposite direction. This book kept me guessing from the first word. I think I might have actually suspected every single person in this book at one point only to be thrown for a loop yet again.

Sheriff Brady James is in charge of the small southern town of Durham Heights, trying to catch a sadistic and brutal killer dropping bodies on the doorstep of his once peaceful town. He meets beautiful Gwyn Woods, passing through on her way to starting a new life for herself, she is pulled into Brady’s world and they find themselves drawn to each other like moths to a flame. Their connection flies off the pages with an epic love story so beautifully written that, Sheriff Brady is officially my new book boyfriend (sorry Gwyn). He is an amazing, hot alpha male who goes after exactly what he wants, and what he wants is Gwyn. This determination results in some of the hottest, sizzling, and passionate scenes I have ever come across. Holy Hell Miss Brightmore knows how to set the mood and a change of panties really needs to be included with each copy of this book.

Can Brady and Gwyn overcome theirs past’s filled with pain, heartbreak and secrets (including one hot B**ch named Mila- who completes our love triangle as Brady’s ex trying to seduce her way back into his life…. and his bed). Man how I loved to hate Mila.

The scenes written in the POV of the killer and the women being abducted and tortured left my heart pounding and I was definitely holding my breath at more that one point wondering just where Cassia was going to take me. I am not usually the biggest fan of the dark suspense romances, and this book definitely has its share of dark, scare the crap out of you scenes but they were integral to the story and I devoured each and every word, unable to stop myself from heading deeper and deeper into the world being constructed with each turn of the pages. This book at times absolutely tested my comfort zone and I loved every freaking minute of it.

This story is told through multiple character point of views. Cassia has seamlessly woven all of these POV together to tell a story that is as dark as it is bright. This story and its vividly written characters have stayed with me and I have continued to go back and read this story over and over again. It is amazing to me that this is the debut novel from Cassia Brightmore, the style of her writing and the vivid detail she has brought to the pages is astounding. I can’t wait to see what else she has in store for me in the future and will be eagerly waiting for the next installment of the Darkness series.

Malevolent by Cassia Brightmore.

Mrs. Brightmore is a woman with many hats, blogger, beta-reader, editor, and it's only natural that this talented woman would branch off yet another limb and dive into authorship with her debut novel Malevolent, Darkness series book 1. This is an amazing read, and had me hooked right from the prologue. Dark reads are my absolute favorite and Cassia does not disappoint.

Gwyn Woods is running from an abusive past and ends up in the quaint little town of Durham Heights. Enter in hot, sexy Sheriff Brady James and this little town seems to have everything Gwyn is looking for to start over. Their chemistry is instantaneous and surprises them both. This book wouldn't be complete without the crazy ex-girlfriend Mila to drive a wedge between Gwyn and Brady whenever possible. And if that wasn't enough to make her run for the hills, this pleasant little town is on the manhunt for a sadistic, psychopath torturing and killing young women.

Cassia blends perfectly, a novel with a bit of everything from romance, thriller, suspense, mystery and erotica. My god that woman can write hot, sizzling passion like no other.

Malevolent will taunt you, enthrall you and consume you and you will love every thrilling, heartbreaking minute of it. With light, there is always dark, both fighting to exist. Will Brady find his light? This wickedly twisted page turner, will have readers on the edge of their seats and just when you think you have it all figured out, Mrs. Brightmore throws in one hell of a twist, you never saw coming.

This is a standalone novel with multiple POVs. Mrs Brightmore has woven the POV of the killer so brilliantly, you feel each and every scene, as if you are experiencing it along with the intended victim. Cassia wants her readers to unleash their inner wickedness and join the darkside with Malevolent, and I agree...come to the darkside....I dare you....

The title might give you a hint as to what you can expect but I have to say that the true brilliance of the book will not only surreptitiously sneak up on you, it will beat you round the head while it laughs at you for not catching on sooner!!!

For a debut novel this is nothing short of exceptional.

It doesn’t rely on sex to keep you hooked- although I have to say some of the scenes are completely mind blowing, it carefully blends in an absolutely killer storyline and Cassia Brightmore; you are one very sick puppy because the twists and turns that you managed to get into this story are simply astonishing.

From the first chapter you will be gasping for more, I couldn’t find a paragraph where I felt able to put the bloody book down and just take stock of what I was reading, I was held hostage by it, completely addictive. I had a front row seat at the events that were unfolding and a tiny peek into the dark world of the killer and I my morbid curiosity was in overdrive – the sheer malevolence of the situation had my heart in my mouth and my eyes glued to the screen.

Sheriff Brady James, has the hopes of everyone in Durham Heights resting on his shoulders as he tries to unravel the mystery of just who is behind the recent spate of murders. While others may find that sort of pressure and responsibility daunting, Sheriff James has more than the average lawman’s tact and guile in his locker – this dominant man has it, like everything else he commands completely under control – and I bloody loved him!!

Jesus, he was so completely alpha that it wasn’t even funny – he oozed and yes, I do mean oozed power, charm and complete ( total and utter) control- Cassia – you are an evil wench – Brady James has just rocked my ever so neat Book Boyfriends List – and I am aghast! I hadn’t expected to find someone so fabulous that he made me want to keep him! If he’d let me of course.

While Sheriff James, stole my attention that is not to say that there were not a plethora of other characters with which it was easy to become enchanted, Gwyn, I was especially intrigued with while Mila really got my back up – bitch! They were only two amongst a stellar cast of potential victims!

I loved the relationship between Gwyn and Brady, Cassia left nothing to the imagination and I completely thank her for that because I wanted to know every little details about Sheriff James.

But the details that I did have with regards to the rest of the story (taking my new obsession out of the situation for the minute) had me completely at my wits end.

I thought I could see a slither of light and that I understood where the story was going when, no out of no-where I was slapped upside the head by the author for being for impudent and to even for one minute believe that I could figure out the madness that she had in store – the plot was so devious it was enigmatic!!

Completely – totally and absolutely loved this book!!!!

Can we say where the hell did that come from?? Wow, what a rush that was. This book sucked me in from page 1 and kept my attention to the bitter end.


I love a book that throws me for a loop and this is one that delivered that. I never saw the ending coming. Once the bad guy was revealed, it left my jaw on the floor bc I was not expecting it. Wasn't even on my radar. and I loved that.

Iam giving this 4 stars, and the 2 reasons I feel like I can't give it 5, are:
1. due to unrealistic expectations on my part. I was geared up for dark and gritty. Which I got. But with all of the hype surrounding it, I didn't get the dark factor I was expecting out of it. Now, don't get me wrong, this is definitely not one of those grey books with dark themes. It's a true dark read. I was just expecting more darkness. I've realize I may have a problem when a book isn't dark enough, but when it comes down to it, for me, the darker and crazier the better.
And 2. Insta love - I HATE Insta love, I want a build up, a chase, a story that leads the pair together. But in this case, we get insta love between the characters. And considering the heroines back ground, and the fact she is running from an abusive ex, it really makes no sense that she would just fall instantly in love with the hero and jump right in to another relationship.
As a survivor or domestic abuse, my 2nd husband had to work his ass off to be able to get me on a date, much less be able to get close enough to me to hug me goodnight. So the whole jump right into a relationship bc we are in love after less than 2 dates and barely knowing each other?? Didn't work for me, at all.
I realize this is fiction, but there needs to be a sense of real with in the pages. At least for me. So insta love is a total book killer for me. insta lust? Absolutely. Insta love? no, just no..

The epilogue... holy hell... where is the author going with that?? I can't wait to discover what's going to come from it. Talk about leaving you hanging with your jaw on the floor......

And from what I understand this is the authors 1st novel. And for a debut novel, she has hit it out of the park. I would of never guessed this was her 1st book.... .1st novels usually read a bit stiff and jilted. You are able to see the potential and so you move on to the next one knowing the author will find their groove and that the next book will be better and usually makes up for what the debut book was lacking. This is not the case with Malevolent. There is absolutely nothing that would tip you off that this was a 1st novel.
So... Iam now moving on, and Iam diving into Evanesce (Darkness Series #2) and I can't wait to see the continuation of how this is all going to play out.

Well done Ms. Brightmore, well done.

✯✯4 Dark Twisted Stars!!✯✯

Cassia Brightmore definitely gave us a debut book that you will not forget that easy!! There are 2 types of books I don't read too often. Dark and third person POV. Even though this book is considered dark, for me it could of been a lot darker. It took me a little while to get used to the third person POV but I was OK with it after I got use to it.

Gwyn Woods is on the run from her abusive relationship. She gets in her car and drives for hours and hours until she lands in Durham Heights. She ends up at a diner and the owner Joan can see Gwyn is afraid and in need of some help. She offers Gwyn a job and the furnished apartment above the diner. Gwyn accepts it.

Sheriff Brady James has been Sheriff in Durham Heights for a few years. He left New York City and has been enjoying the laid back country. That is until an 18yr old girl was kidnapped and murdered. Being in a small town doesn't help because he must send everything to the larger town over. So, everything takes longer to get back. He swears to find this sadistic killer!!

The minute Brady James sees Gwyn he's instantly attracted to her. He has to take her out and won't take no for an answer. This man is some serious man candy. I mean every female wants this guy. He had a fling with the Durham Heights Princess Mila. She was the only one I hated in this book other then the evil Malevolent! Mila decided she wanted Brady back and he wanted to be far away from her!

Brady & Gwyn fall quick for each other. For me it was too quickly! I mean Gwyn was running from a man and was looking over her shoulder every 2-4 minutes. Didn't trust easily. Next thing her & Brady are all "I Love You".It just made no sense to me.

Anyway, it's not all rainbows and butterflies because another girl gets taken. Sheriff Brady and his partner & right hand man Sam and everyone else in the department must find out who's behind the killings. And, what are they missing? How many will end up dead before they figure it out?

I don't wanna give away too much. This book was fast paced and full of questions. I never knew what to expect. Malevolent is was dark, evil crazy SOB!!! My jaw literally dropped when I found out who was all behind it. I was glad the lawn was being mowed when I read the last chapter and epilogue because I said some stuff that had a few 4 letter words in the sentence. I am definitely looking forward to the next book!

I'm a guilty party that almost never 5 stars a book because I believe that there should always be room for improvement. However, this is damn close. I give Malevolent 4 1/2 stars!
The romance is insta love, but the darkness and suspense will keep you craving more. DON'T let the beginning preview of the book prevent you from picking this up. There's just enough dark to keep you intrigued, but not so much to turn you off and make this a DNF or a don't buy. It really is a great balance of dark, romance, suspense/thriller and small town ambiance.
There is a bad element doing evil things to young women in this small town. Gwyn stops in after fleeing a BAD relationship several states away and wants nothing to do with men. One of the first people she meets is Brady - who happens to be the sheriff. There is an instant connection between them and Brady is quite the dirty talker. As much as she wants to be independent and by herself, she feels uncharacteristically safe when she's with Brady and they are a committed couple in virtually no time at all.
I wasn't crazy about the dialog between Brady and Gwyn at times. Personally, I would have liked to have seen a little more tenderness in a couple of scenes. That's my only criticism. I understood why Brady was written the way he was by the time the book ended. I just wanted it all.
There seems to be no rhyme or reason in the victim choice, and the signature is clear, but there is no discernible reason as to why.
There is finalization to the case at the end of the book, but the window is open for additional stories to come. Cassia did a fabulous job with this book. There are enough questions, twists and turns along the way that my suspicion kept kept changing. This girl (me) - the crime show junkie with the analytic mind had it so wrong and was WAY off the mark. The reveal at the end of the book literally had my jaw hanging open in shock. There were times I was angry at what happened, and I messaged Cassia about it. If you feel the need, message her - she'd love to hear from you!
I didn't read anything else for at least a day after I read Malevolent. I'll be talking about and this book for a while and look forward to Cassia's next book. If you're reading this review - do yourself a favor and click the buy link. I don't think that you'll be disappointed.

I didn't HATE the book (one star) but I also didn't like a lot of it (three stars), so its going to go right in the middle lol. I will say this appears to be her first book so I'm hoping she learned a lot from the writing process. It really was a bit of a mess, especially after a promising start.

Gwyn is new to Durham Heights, Louisiana, fleeing from her ex in Chicago. I figured he would pop up at some point, but thankfully he didn't. Gwyn is a victim of years of abuse, including one very recent battery with a beer bottle that sent her running, so you would think she would shy away from men, especially alpha chest-beating types. But nope, upon meeting Sheriff Brady she succumbs to her baser urges and takes him up on his date offer. After one date - ONE - they are proclaiming their love for each other and she is moving in with him lol!! The sex is that good (and she does write these scenes well). Upon finding her not at home just like a day or two later, he practically breaks down the door to her apartment and goes all caveman on her. Again, after years of abuse you would think this would be a red flag but nope, she accepts his huge over reaction and outburst and reveals her history.

I thought this would be a super dark read, especially after the brutal first chapter and its rape scene (he's a blood drinker eww but one of the first I've read). He actually did give me the creeps and I wanted more scenes with him. It felt like an erotic romance with a touch of dark suspense. I would have preferred the reverse (lots of darkness, suspense, mystery, mind-twists with some erotic romance for the main characters).I didn't predict WHO the bad guy was but I did guess a little about his identity. Another character was given entirely too much book time so I predicted their involvement so I wasn't surprised when they showed up (and then escaped). However, I don't know if I'm intrigued enough with them and their little cliffhanger to continue on. One positive thing, it was a very fast read.
