A brutal tournament, a missing sister, and a witch with nothing left to lose.
I’m Alicia Stormwell, a witch who spends her days rescuing fantastic creatures and my nights battling the dark underworld of magical animal trafficking. But nothing prepares me for the mess I’m about to walk into.
When my hunky werewolf friend, Kyle Matthews, asks for my help in finding his missing sister, Sabrina, I’m all in. Our search leads us to the Velvet Claw, a shadowy organization running a supernatural fight ring where lives are currency and losing isn’t an option.
As the tournament reaches its sinister climax, I must race against time and use every ounce of my magical skill to rescue Sabrina before the Velvet Claw gets its claws deeper into her life, Kyle’s, and mine.
The Witch's Bestiary · Witches, Werewolves, and Vampires · Hidden magic and a magical underworld · A slow-burn / RH romance · Fantastic creatures · A badass female main character with snark and humor
I came across the introductory novella on StoryOrigin, and it looked like fun - a humorous take on urban fantasy. I've read that story, and proceeded to the novels.
What to Expect
Amusing modern urban-fantasy where the protagonist is a vet for magical creatures and has loose attitudes towards law and order. Together with rescuing magical animals, she also helps those in need by bending the rules (not to say outright breaking and entering). It's got all the tropes (like the obligatory werewolf and vampire potential boyfriends), with some exotic beasts thrown in. It's light, easy reading, short novels to tear through on holiday-brain. It's one of those series that can simply be described by the shopping list to tropes (which appears in the blurb).
The second novel, Midnight Storm, continues with the same characters and arc. Alicia and Kyle (werewolf) continue on the reason they met -- trying to find his sister, which disappeared. All progresses well about 2/3 of the book, when it suddenly becomes about explicit sex scenes and the smirking is turned to 11 (people seem to have a limited range of facial expressions). Alicia's secret powers make another appearance, kinda, but still not enough time for her to dig deeper into.
What I liked
It's generally well-written and amusing, short and fast paced. The magical bestiary adds an original touch, but otherwise it's pretty straight forward "trashy" urban fantasy that delivers on the entertainment premise. Also note the romance is barely there in the first novel, it goes full-on explicit from the middle of the second; at least it's still high on action throughout, which I much prefer.
What to be aware of
As above, don't expect deep themes or clever mysteries. It's short, fast reads that require no brain-power because everything is spelled out. Great for when on vacation or when you need a break from heavier reading.
Felix's and Jack's Reviews
Felix had his fair encounters with magical beasts, up to and including once cooking a gryphon for a feast. He fully supports Alicia taking the law into her hands and sticking it to criminals, something he's done all too often, though he takes a more utilitarian approach to magical beasts and their maintenance. The explicit sex scenes and the constant smirking, however, were not to his taste. He also mentioned that a kiss is hardly the appropriate test he has ever seen to any secret society worth the blood sacrifice, and that the fight scenes raised questions.
Jack had a good laugh at the "Magical Crime Division" that's a unknown to all other cops. Clearly they haven't tried to navigate the HR and Payroll departments of actual police. Being a 'magical police' himself, he knows how the system works and how to twist it to his advantage. He also complained that the secret society failed to deliver on the hype -- just a masquerade without any of the advertised saucy bits.
Summary
Recommended if you like urban fantasy and want something light. I use it as a mental break between more demanding books.

Enjoying the reviews, but wondering who the heck are those Felix and Jack fellows? Glad you asked! Felix is the protagonist of the Togas, Daggers, and Magic series, an historical-fantasy blend of a paranormal detective on the background of ancient Rome, and Jack is the police detective running the Unusual Crimes Squad, dealing in occult crimes in modern-day Australia.

~I received an Advanced Reader Copy of Hidden Storm in exchange for a review~
First of all, I’m writing this while being pretty sick so I hope I don’t ramble weirdly but cannot promise the best coherence in this review.
This second book was all about finding Kyle’s sister who turns out to be in deep with a shady underground organization with distinct cult vibes (booo, cults, boohoo we hate those!)
I thought Sabrina, Kyle’s sister was a bit erhm…naïve and by a bit I mean a whole lot and I found myself caring not that much about her but for the fact that she is Kyle’s sister.
Kyle is another one of those that I’m not entirely sure about, do I like him? I don’t know , I don't hate him but he’s giving very little and I can’t make my mind up about him, especially since it seems he’s hiding things from Alicia.
I was afraid that maybe we wouldn't see anything from detective Reed in this second book and that it would focus 100% on Kyle but we do thankfully get some glimpses and even though Alicia gets along with both, they don’t really get along with each other so that promises interesting dynamics in future books. I do like Reed though, the vamp feels like he has a more distinct personality than Kyle to me.
As for secondary characters, I really like Aunt Lydia. She seems cool and extremely calm under pressure, so we know where Alicia got it.
I would have loved to see more of the bestiary, all the different creatures seem cool and I do hope we see more of them in the next books.
We get another glimpse of Alicia being more than just a witch at the end but she seems stubbornly determined to ignore any and all signs pointing towards that, I have my own suspicions but we’ll see if they’re right or not in the coming books.
The book is very fast paced though so if you like your story to meander through slowly then this is probably a bit of a whirlwind for you, I do think it would benefit from a bit more slowness at times so fully flesh out the backstory because the fast speed does make that a bit more difficult.
All in all , a pretty solid second book in the series and I’ll definitely read the third.
Evangeline Hunter has done it again, in her continuation of the Witch’s Bestiary series – Midnight Storm, as she takes us on a grand adventure. Once again Alicia Stormwell is presented with a mystery to solve, except this time the request comes from her friend and colleague Kyle Matthews, who has still not been able to locate his sister and turns to Alicia for help. Witch and Werewolf set out into the supernatural underworld, following any lead they can find. This search will test them both in more ways than they initially though, as they run through the full gamut of emotions, as they discover and uncover truths that are not just limited to the search for a lost sister. With a slew of returning characters and the introduction of some new and memorable characters, as this new adventure takes us on another wild ride. For those that have read the first book in the series, you will be immediately drawn straight back into the magic filled world, and take off on this new mystery without skipping a beat. For those that have not read the first book in the series ( Hidden Storm: A Fast-paced Humorous Urban Fantasy Book (The Witch's Bestiary Book 1) ), you will be able to pick up and get into this instalment without issue although I do recommend that you do start at the beginning, to fully appreciate the nuances of the characters and their relationships so far. A high bar was set with the first book, and this one does not disappoint. A worthy second novel in the series that does not waste your time but instead takes the time to develop and engage with the characters, giving life to an already very well developed and refined world. I would highly recommend picking up this book if you already have the first book or picking up both the first book and this one if you are new to the series. As a light hearted, slow burn romance in a magic and supernatural rich world this delivers and more. I am now very much looking forward to being able to read the upcoming 3rd book in the series.

Thank you to the author for the ARC, all opinions are my own.
There are some interesting concepts I really enjoy, but this one took fast-paced to a new level, and the story and characters feel very surface-level. The main storyline is about finding Kyle's missing sister, Sabrina, a problem that was initially introduced in the first book. To do so, Alicia and Kyle investigate, which has them quickly moving from place to place and person to person looking for information.
How quickly? Well, in just 200 pages, they manage to visit: * A print shop for flyers to poster the city with and take a train * A magical shop in a different hidden magical area in NYC * Alicia’s aunt 4x * Sabrina’s apartment 2x * 5 different businesses somehow connected to Sabrina * 3 other individuals Alicia knows who can assist, visiting some 2x * The magical policeman from the previous book at the police station 2x * The bestiary/Alicia’s apartment at least 5x * Sabrina’s location 3x, 2 of which are parties
There are so many places and people in 200 pages, it feels a bit like we quickly ‘drive’ by each of them. I wish there was a bit more time, more show don’t tell and depth to the characters and side characters. The banter is limited since the plot moves so quickly from place to place and the appearance of side characters is so short they feel quite flat. There’s a lot of exchanging of favors with contacts. You do see Alicia’s character, her inability to not help out others shine through in her actions. Part of that though includes her putting herself at risk and being a bit impulsive about it.
The romance feels like it came out of nowhere, you see it coming, but there’s not enough depth to the characters or their interactions or inner monologues to make it feel natural. There's even so little depth to Kyle I can't tell if I like him. I don’t know what it is she likes about him, just that she suddenly sees him as a love interest.
Sadly, for a lot of the book the beastiary isn’t really a part of the story. There’s two scenes set there, one that feels like it’s meant to not leave it out of the story but isn’t quite an ‘everyday’ occurrence either, and another that very much furthers the plot, giving the FMC what she needs to trade favors in their quest to find Kyle’s sister. In the end, the plot does tie in magical creatures as part of the story with Sabrina, but that also feels a bit forced or strangely lucky.
Still, I’m curious enough about where the plot is going with the possibility of hidden identity, powerful magic, and loving the magical creatures to continue on.
Midnight Storm is a mix of romance, fighting, and children taking a field trip. Kyle Matthews and our fearless heroine Alicia Stormwell are trying to find Kyle's sister. After checking the usual places of her apartment, last jobs, and the police our duo is running out of options. Except Alicia and her aunt are witches and Kyle and his sister are werewolves. So there's that. Everything still comes down to who you know and how willing they are to tell you. Did I mention the bachelorette party or the guy who can create clothes in like 5 minutes? What if Kyle's sister doesn't want to be found? Or maybe she does or. Well I'm not going to tell you everything! Then there's the interlude of the children's field trip. Ah! That's it. If you want to find out if Kyle's sister is found and what goes on during the hunt, not to mention the field trip, then you are going to have to read this yourself! I loved it. It's funny and scary and well, there are witches! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! And if you haven't read the first book in the series, Hidden Storm, you need to read that one too!
This book is a great follow-up to the first volume. The story focuses on the investigation to find Sabrina, Kyle’s missing sister, and the pacing is especially fast. Everything moves quickly, jumping from one place to another with no downtime, which makes for a very engaging read. In just 200 pages, there’s no time to get bored!
While some scenes can feel a bit rushed, the fast pace actually works in favor of the story and keeps the tension high throughout.
I was thrilled to see the return of the dark and brooding detective Reid . He was a real favorite of mine in the first book, and he still brings so much charisma and mystery.
I’m also excited to see how the budding relationship between Kyle and Alicia will develop ... will it last? And I can’t wait to find out more about the source of Alicia’s powers, which seem truly unique.
This was a fun read just like the first book. Alicia, a low-level witch, runs the Bestiary, a shelter for lost and abused mythical animals. She is assisted by Kyle, the werewolf she cleared of murder charges. Now the search is on for Kyle’s missing sister, Sabrina. Again, this book has some action, surprises, suspense, a bit of romance, humour and lots of different animals. My favourite animal in the book is a Cabbit – a cross between a cat and a rabbit. I want one. There is magic and mystery as well. Aunt Lydia supplies some magic, Kyle gets roped into doing a bachelorette party, Detective Reed is looking on from the sidelines and more. For a shorter book, it packs a lot in. It is a fun, quick, read. Looking forward to the next book.
Alicia is back with Kyle in the race to find Kyle’s sister, Sabrina. The pair follow some leads that finds them infiltrating a very elite and dangerous group called The Velvet Claw and find things are more sinister than they thought.
This is book 2 of The Bestiary series and I loved it! Alicia and Kyle get closer, but there’s also a little bit of a triangle going with Detective Reed. I am honestly living for Alicia to get together with the broody vampire detective, though that doesn’t happen in this one. We have some betrayal, some magical enhancement, saving magical creatures (obv) and an ending that gears us up for book 3. I can’t wait!
When I grow up, I want to run a bestiary and keep all the magical creatures safe. I'm really enjoying the fact that Hunter doesn't use everyday mythical creatures either. I would have liked to have seen more of Alicia rescuing the creatures. I would like to know how they reacted to being saved.
Even though this was a quick, easy read, I feel like there could be a little more depth to the characters.
The end felt a little forced, though. Like the author was trying to create tension where there really wasn't any.
I'm looking forward to seeing where book 3 takes us.
No to animal abusers getting away with “but I got caught up with saving the farm”. You have to be fkg kidding me. This woman got away with being an absolute lowest filth of a human but we brushed it off because, what? I don’t know? She should have gone to jail. She chose to abuse those animals for money.
I also hate the cheating trope. Tell us that crap up front so we can skip the writing. Nah. I’m done with this writer. Let’s not dress up abuse and cheating - and with no negative consequences- other than the suffering of the animals and the woman being cheated on, they don’t matter though?
I enjoyed the first book in this series, so I was happy to read the second. I really like Alicia, but I have to be honest, I’m not sure if I like Kyle. He gets on my nerves a tad bit; I can’t put my finger on why though. LOL! This latest has us going to a swanky nightclub, getting help from Alicia’s aunt, and learning just what is behind Kyle’s sister’s disappearance. There are a couple of revelations in this book I’m curious to see how they are going to change our characters in the next book. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
I managed to get an ARC for book 1 in this series and loved it so much I begged for book 2. This is even better than the first one. In this one, as promised, Alicia helps Kyle look for his sister. The author effortlessly brings a bit of romance into the story and is setting the scene for a love triangle. This book is an easy and relaxing read. It is also a quick read as you will get so caught up in it nothing will distract you. Filled with interesting characters and amazing mythical characters along with a great story, this book is a must read
A perfect continuation from Book One! The relationships continue to grow, and the story leaves plenty of room for speculation. By the end, I definitely felt frustrated with some of the characters—in a good way. Kyle and Alicia’s search for Kyle’s younger sister, Sabrina, takes them through the chaos of New York and into the dangerous world of an upper-class secret society. Fast-paced, fun, and easy to read, this book kept me guessing until the very last page. I can’t wait for Book Three!
Entertaining, easy to read... I just wish sometimes the part about the magical creatures would be more developed. As far as I'm seeing, it's not the most innovative storyline, but things are sufficiently moving that there aren't any lingering moments. The author managed to keep me hooked. Romance does get a bigger turn here, but it makes sense and sex isn't there to pad the book with words, it is meaningful.
Overall a nice urban bit-lit, easygoing and lovely to get into.
Good 2nd book of the Bestiary series. This felt a bit more disjointed from the ending of the first book, but love the plot line. The light hearted jokes that break up the dark mystery is refreshing relief from the tense moments. I do wish there was more depth to these relationships and interactions and not all surface level. However, I'm still hooked. Can't wait to see what our friends are up to next!
The descriptions of the creatures in the Bestariary were wonderful, but this installment felt like it had a split personality. I enjoyed the parts with Alicia at the Bestiary. Kyle? He was whiny and annoying and just didn't seem to fit. Perhaps that was.the point, but it got annoying enough that I started skimming and almost didn't finish. Frankly, I hope this is the last we see of him and that whatever this is between Detective Reed and Alicia has a chance.

In this second volume, Alicia finally meets Kyle’s sister. But this time, the price of helping him may be much higher than she initially imagined. Gradually, she realizes that some dangers don’t come only from the outside, but also from the choices we make. Alicia discovers that even with magic, some situations don’t turn out the way we expect.
Whooo Man! We are on it again!! Evangeline Hunter ROCKS!! This is the second book in the Bestiary series and She is Rocking it!! Our Girl Alicia is neck deep in trouble and has a HOT Werewolf by her side! Think Stephine Plum with Magical Creatures and you'll get the picture! This book does not disappoint! You will Love this series!!
Again, fast and furious - maybe a little too fast & furious. Would like to see more of the day-to-day issues of dealing with all the weird animals, but the previous book in the series gave a clear indication what the focus of this one would be, so fair enough ...we'll see what the next one brings. Thanks to the author for the ARC - all opinions here are my own and freely given.
This was such a great book! The second edition did not disappoint! Alicia is way more than she appears. Is she just a witch or is there more to her powers>? AND...the juxtaposition between Kyle [vampire detective] and Reed [hot werewolf] is driving me crazy! Can't wait to see what happens in "Island Storm!"
Beautiful creatures galore. Romance, magic and mystery. Well written in an easy flowing read. Lovely character building. Lots of action to keep you hooked. Great series so far
Midnight Storm is the very creative and exciting second book of the series The Witch’s Bestiary. I really like the FMC, Alicia, but I’m afraid that her habit of keeping secrets to avoid overburdening others will come back to bite her in the end. The storyline is great and I love the creatures that Alicia cares for in the bestiary. I highly recommend it.
Disclaimer: I received this ARC from the author and this is my honest and freely given opinion.
The second book in the series and Alicia finds herself in hot water. So much drama. But that is what all good action stories are about and her ability to find danger, figure out how to resolve the tension, and work alongside a shifter in search of more than he says, shows her versatility in accepting the unknown. Looking forward to seeing how Island Storm resolves some of the dangling threads.
