Dressed To Kill #2

Dressed to Kill 2: A Monster Seamstress LitRPG

Rate this book
Posing as a mage, a seamstress with unprecedented powers must survive her homeland’s infamous magic school—and fight the dark forces threatening her world.

Gwen Tailor is stunned when her most formidable Noble enemy—and captor—Valjean, becomes a powerful ally. Her unique crafter abilities have helped her gain monster-killing talents usually reserved for Nobles, but to save her town and people from extinction, she needs Valjean’s help to become a Noble herself and infiltrate their aristocratic circles. So, along with cleaver-wielding butcher Sandy and enchanted-weapons-maker Gerald, she enrolls in the legendary Academy to learn its lethal arts . . . and uncover the secrets behind their land’s ruthless class divisions.

Using dazzling new materials, Gwen creates magnificent armor, the likes of which was previously thought impossible. But even as she levels up with astonishing speed, she and her friends battle monsters that many a Noble has failed to survive. And even more difficult is mastering the Academy’s ruthlessly strict etiquette and keeping up with the requisite duels of honor.

Now, Gwen must undertake a final Academy mission that will complete her deception and establish her rank as one of the elite. But the hostile perils of the Wild outside civilization will spawn a massive attack even the Nobles’ most brilliant minds could not have predicted. And when Gwen makes a discovery that puts into question everything she thought she knew, she must choose between no-win situations and inescapable traps. Meanwhile, beyond the Academy’s walls, a sinister force gathers its strength, preparing to seize all in its unforgiving grip . . .

Good, unique story

The story is well-written and fun to read. However, about the time the book gets going, and ready to start being something.... it's the 90% of the book and you realize nothing is going to happen. Then, you figure out that despite the length of the book, nothing happened and what little did, should have been condensed down to a few chapters at best and added to the end of Book 1 or the beginning of Book 3. The plot twist at the end is different for sure, but unfortunately it really changes the book and creates a worry that the series is going to become something different then what it was for sure in Book 1 and vaguely hinted at in Book 2. That change can be good or even great, for sure, but if it is not you got into the series for..... it may not go well, or be what you want to read.

This book is short, but it's eventful. The group from the first book in the series finds itself in a magical academy that is only for nobles, and it's laced throughout with politics. And the book ends with a relatively huge revelation that will set up the next volume.

The characters, whose background is not at all typical of the other students, are overpowered, making most of the challenges they are presented with rather trivial. The main challenge they face here, as in the rest of the series, is how to subvert the "game" system to maintain some of their inherent advantages.

The pacing is very good, and the series plot develops in an interesting way. I'm not a huge fan of the near-cliffhanger ending, and the book could easily have told more of the story in this volume. But overall, it was surprisingly good for what it was. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, but given the rate at which the author is releasing books, it might be a long wait.

I enjoyed the book, but I feel like a lot of the "magic" that made the first book so enjoyable wasn't present here, and it became more of the standard "maximize everything" type of story, as opposed to gaming the system to achieve a result, like the first book.

It also felt much shorter than the first, even though it's only by 5 pages.

this was great

I wasn’t sure if there would be a sequel. I really liked the first one and the second one was really interesting too. I usually don’t like the academy arcs but this was good. I’ll definitely get the next one. Thanks for the book!

I love contrast between crafting and fighting. It makes everything grounded and not over powered. Every gain feels earned.

Unique take on a magic school, unique skill/power set, likeable characters, and a plot twist that's got me hungry for book 3. Very well done.
