Wonderful historic western set in Texas, 1875. Jess Wilder was a bounty hunter on the trail of a man/woman team of ruthless killers. When he learned the woman he had been hunting was captured and was being transported via stagecoach to another location, he bounds "hell for leather" to intercept a known rescue attempt by the bandits. By the time he catches up with the stagecoach, the prisoners have already been rescued--except the woman--or so he thought.

Ariel, an innocent person traveling on the stagecoach, had the misfortune of resembling the woman Jess was hunting. Of course, pictures being what they were, he only knew hair color and approximations, so Jess assumed he had his bandita, even though she protested (vigorously) all along their journey.

This was a nice, historical romance with great characters! I'd give this book 4 1/2 stars, if I could.

Cowboy Western That Didn’t Hold My Interest (I was tempted to give it 2 stars...)

Set in Texas in in 1875, this tells the story of 20-year-old Ariel Leland who travels west from St. Louis—alone on a stagecoach—to claim the ranch her father left her. When the coach has an accident due to “desperadoes” she is discovered in the wreckage by bounty hunter and former US Marshall Jess Wilder, who assumes she is the lover of the murderer and bank robber he’s been hunting. She tells him who she is but, of course, he doesn’t believe hr. And even though he thinks she participated in the robbery that led to his brother’s death, he’s so attracted to her he decides to have her.

This Western romance did not hold my attention and I found some of it not believable. To begin with, there was too much backstory and too much of the hero and heroine ogling each other in the first 20 pages; and I swore if she used the word “desperado” one more time I was going to stop reading. The early love scenes between the hero and heroine were not believable. She was a proper young lady, a virgin but with moves like a town doxy. No way. Another feature that distracted was Mason’s tendency to head hop, frequently changing points of view, sometimes in the same paragraph for only a sentence.

Jess acted the cad when, after he realizes Ariel is a young lady whose virginity he’s just taken, he drops her at her ranch like a piece of baggage. The heroine was so naïve at times she appeared stupid. Other times she was just weak. I like my heroines smart and strong. So Mason didn’t win me with the two main characters. Most of the plot developments were typical of the scenario where a neighboring rancher wants to steal the land. It got better toward the end when the action picked up but another unbelievable aspect happened when it looked like Ariel supposedly lost her ranch to a swindle. But since the swindler never had title, and you can’t sell what you don’t own, Ariel was never in danger of losing the ranch. Ugh!

It you want a GOOD western historical, read one by Shirl Henke.

I decided to read this book so I can rest a bit from my studies. At first I didn't like it, but the end was amazing and was the perfect finish for the book

The first Connie Mason I’ve read. This is packed with action and so much drama. Shootouts, abductions, mistaken identity, unplanned pregnancy, and, oh ya, incest??! This is a wild ride. The beginning had a very quick “falling in lust” for me. I felt like it was maybe missing a few scenes of actually getting to know one another. The villains were very much caricatures- although Tilly had a back story a raison d’être. This was fun. Jess was a very likeable hero. Some of the language and phrases like “Jesus h. Christ” were pretty annoying and silly. Overall- I enjoyed this 4.6.

Rating: 3.5 / 5 (rounded down for now)

Writing style was quite good, and plot was o-kay, but sadly, I think my interest in the romance genre has been stated for now, as I was in no proper frame of mind to read this and, after the first hundred pages or so, lost interest.

A definite re-read in the future with a more in-depth review, but for now I'll leave it as "indeterminate".

This has become one of my favorite books by Connie Mason. I couldn't put it down! It had everything I could have asked for- great characters, a wonderful setting, suspense and the perfect amount of loving. I really liked the heroine Ariel. She has ahead of her time in many ways but yet very believable. She was definitely not some spoiled girl who expected others to do for her. She worked hard, had goals and was confident in her ability to stand on her own two feet.
After Ariel's father dies, she inherits his ranch in Texas. Her mother hated Texas and had divorced Ariel's father and then remarried (this is the only part of the book that was questionable to me- divorce would have been extremely unusual during the 1800's and social suicide for someone in the upper echelon of St. Louis society). Because Ariel is six or so months shy of her twenty first birthday, her mother and step father make the decision to sell the ranch for her. Ariel runs away to Texas and the adventure begins.
Heat level=6.5-7. (1=Christian, 5=fade to black and 10=erotica). While there are sex scenes they are tastefully done and not over blown. I loved that Ariel was not a passive, week women but a very active partner who made her own decisions and took responsibility for herself and those decisions. I highly recommend this book, though you might want to read this when you don't have to get up early the next morning. It's a hard book to put down!

Jess Wilder a bounty hunter over ruled by the emotion of REVENGE. For two years Jess has been searching for Cart Dillion the man who killed his only family/brother Judd Wilder. Than one day Jess rides past an upside down stage coach and he could believe his luck. There she was Tilly Cowan the lover of Bart Dillion. Ariel Leland is not having a good day. First her stage coach turns upside down, than this tall dark Texan guys accuse her of being some wanted person. She just can't believe that this man though of her as "Tilly Cowan" and she has no way to prove that she isn't because her IDENTIFICATION paper got stolen. But as much as she despises Jess, she can't deny the strong emotions she feels for this bounty hunter. And Jess feels the same way about her as well. But they got a long way to go before they can live HAPPILY EVER AFTER.

I love Jess Wilder, his just the sexist bounty hunter alive! His tall and has handsome dark looks and a mouth that says the most sexiest, dirtiest, sweetest things that is just..... And Ariel that lady is just sensational to read. For a lady that small, she does have one heck of a sharp tongue.

Jess+Ariel= LOVE, LOVE, LOVE

Simple, easy read set back in early Texas. Mistaken identity story that is very predictable, yet enjoyable. Sassy, naive heroine and hard and tough hero who used to be a US Marshall. She is heading to Texas to claim her ranch willed to her by her father. He is looking for the killer of his brother and thinks she was an accomplice. Lots of conflicts thrown in their ways that are neatly cleaned up by the end of the story.
