DEAD BEFORE MORNING
British Detective Joe Rafferty and his partner, Sergeant Dafyd Llewellyn in a murder mystery involving the killing of a young woman bludgeoned beyond recognition, with no ID and found in a secure place to which she supposedly had no admission. Who is she? How has she gained access? And who was responsible for her murder? These are just a few of the questions the detective duo must answer in this first novel in the cozy mystery series. With difficulties besetting them on all sides, including their own superintendent and a media that has decided to adopt the case of the 'Faceless Lady' as their own personal crusade for justice, newly-promoted Inspector Rafferty has something to prove.

DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN
British Detectives Joe Rafferty and his partner, Dafyd Llewellyn, in their second murder mystery investigation, set out to discover who killed Barbara Longman, a woman with no known enemies. But when it soon becomes apparent that the murder has been committed by someone who must have known the victim well, the police investigation shifts to the victim's family, the wealthy and influential Shores. Rafferty suspects that Charles Shore, not a man known to forgive failure, will use his influence to damage Rafferty's career should he fail to find the murderer.
*
DEATH LINE
Third novel in the Rafferty & Llewellyn mystery series, Death Line sees the detective duo trying to solve the murder mystery of the famed 'seer', Jasper Moon, with his own crystal ball. Gradually it becomes clear that Jasper Moon was a man of many parts, not all of them appeared very savoury. Moon was a wealthy man, but seems to have written no will; certainly, Detectives Rafferty and Llewellyn can't find it. In a case involving as many twists and turns as a snake avoiding capture, the detectives must take their murder investigation back through the years to the victim's youth to answer that question: 'Who did it?' And Rafferty fears that after such a long time, the evidence their murder inquiry needs will no longer be there to find.
*
THE HANGING TREE
Fourth novel in the Rafferty & Llewellyn mystery series. This murder mystery involves the detective pair in the case of the vanishing hanged man. But when the hanged man turns up in Dedman Woods for a second time, the British detectives are able to confirm that he is a man many had reason to hate. Because Maurice Smith, charged years earlier with four child rapes, had escaped on a legal technicality. Detective Rafferty feels ambivalent about the case from the start. Not sure his desire to solve it is strong enough, he has to fight the feeling that natural justice, in winning out against the judicial sort, has right on its side. The punishment has, in his book, fitted the crime. As the usual police procedure continues towards an unwanted conclusion, Rafferty, caught between the law and his own sense of morality, feels this is an investigation that could cause him to demand his own resignation as a detective.

Great cast of characters

The first four books of this series take you from Rafferty's first case as a new Inspector with a Sergeant who is his total opposite. The cases are difficult and high profile. A great combination of police work and personal lives. Can't wait to read more!

Extremely Detailed British Police Investigations

Very little action but lots of clues from various folks interviewed once or more by primarily two detectives in regards to murders.

First four books

Held my interest. Believable characters. Intricate plot. Liked the fallibility of Rafferty and his extended family in contrast to the dour Welsh detective

Thoroughly enjoyed these stories!

The characters reminded me very much of inspector Morse and inspector Lewis. I felt like I knew them and enjoyed Evan's writing!

Great collection

I enjoyed each one of these books. All suspense filled with twists and turns while you rack your brain trying to figure out who is guilty. Great read!

but for the profanity

These were good enough stories to read, interesting, quirky, often funny, beleaguered, I never had an idea of what rafter looked like apart from wearing shabby suits and dusty shoes, him having red hair, this was the same for all the characters, I never got a good glimpse of their faces, there characters yes, their size or lack of it, but nothing to make me really like or dislike these characters, as I couldn’t imagine them.
That said, they are clever twisty tales, sometimes rafferty’s rumination’s were are tad too long, and in particular the last book is full of blasphemy. I had to really push myself to finish these books. Kind of wished I hadn’t wasted the time.
That’s all.

This series is easy reading.

I think the author improves with each book. But she doesn't do well with clues. They are never sufficient for the denouement she sets up. And some facts don't jive. This one had an awful ending and no afterward or epilogue to soften it. The times lines didn't fit some characters.

Four mysteries in box set

I enjoyed the stories and the mystery parts. I was disappointed that the main characters didn't seem to grow and mature through the 4 consecutive books. I didn't find either one feeling like an old friend or anyone I would want to hang out with.

Excellent Mystery

I enjoyed the depth and breadth of the investigation.
Also the relationship between the the two main characters.
Most of all, each book was long enough that it took several evenings to read.

Interesting duo

I found the relationship between interesting and amusing. I am wondering where it will go and how it will evolve. Also, I found myself thinking Rafferty’s job was a bit too easy and smooth. I could be wrong;-)

I thoroughly enjoyed the first 4 books in the Rafferty & Llewellyn boxed set. The stories were good and between Rafferty and Llewellyn I honestly don't know which one to like the most, as they are so very different. I am now going to start on the next boxed set in the series.

Good Stories, Good British Humor!

It's amazing how an author can create such an enjoyable series with each able to hold its own and yet be creatively different. Well worth the read!

These were short reads. I like the characters, the plots are good but the British humor sort of escapes me. I'd probably read more of these.

Moved slowly and without much of a story. It is the epilogue that tells the story and ties all the pieces together. Why not read just the epilogue.

Interesting read

I really like the main characters in these books. A person can become interested and invested in their lives. I want to read more.

Good, not great, read

I read the first four books in succession. I think I would have enjoyed them more with a break in between. The two main characters reminded me of the Inspector Lewis series I'd seen, mainly in their relationship. The characters definitely have their own unique personalities.
The cases are fairly interesting with sufficient red herrings. However Raffertys process of jumping to conclusions, generally incorrect, was a trifle annoying.
Humor abounds via Raffertys family.
All in all, good read but not on a par with more notable authors.

I liked 'em

It took me a while to get with Raferty, but it finally got thru my thick skull, probably not unlike his, and I got with the program. I'd tell the rest of world I'd recommend you "go for it" and for me, there is now another entry on my Books.To.Follow List.
Thanks for a good read
