God with Us: Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany Sermons

Rate this book
God enfleshed Himself and became one of us in order to redeem and rescue us from sin, death, and the devil. Christ’s incarnation forms the substance of all Christian preaching, and it is the essence of every celebration of the Lord’s Supper and Baptism, every proclamation of Absolution to repentant sinners. That’s why the Christian Church gathers around preaching and the Sacraments, and that’s why books of sermons continue to be published and cherished in the Church. Christ is present in His body – for us, for forgiveness.

The sermons in God With Us embody incarnational preaching. In fifty-nine sermons spanning Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany, including daily sermons for all of Advent, Pastor David Petersen preaches an ever-present Christ, a Christ for you, a Christ with you.

Wow. I'm not sure how else to react to this book. The devotions are sermons designed to walk the reader from Advent all the way through the Epiphany season to Transfiguration, and they may be some of the best sermons to which I've ever been exposed. Unlike many Advent devotionals, the focus isn't to make Advent a series of mini Christmases, all sparkly and joyful. They're quiet, introspective, dare I say convicting. In a season of hustle-bustle and merry everything, I found I welcomed the preparation, the reminder of why the coming Christ was *so* important...and that while we are certainly joyful at His birth, there is a solemnity surrounding its necessity. I cannot wait to delve into Pastor Petersen's Lenten book, and I look forward to including God with Us into my future Advents as well.

Like Fr. Petersen's sermon Lent & Easter sermon collection, Thy Kingdom Come, this latest collection of sermons for Advent, Christmastide, and Epiphany pulls no punches. Fr. Petersen demonstrates again and again the sinner-righteous paradox of the Baptismal life of a Christian. Time and again we are called to repent of our daily sins and receive the forgiveness of sins through the Sacrament and absolution (i.e. the Word).

Fr. Petersen's sermons are a fantastic weekly devotional. His presentation is Law & Gospel for the Christian at its best.

I can't say enough good things about this book. A good friend of mine recommended it, along with this author's book for the Lenten season, last year. I didn't get the Lent book in time for last year, but was able to read this one for Adven/Christmas/Epiphany this season.

There is a good introduction that helps understand how the book is intended to be read. The first reading is for Thanksgiving Day, then follows a reading for St. Andrew, Apostle, on November 30. After that, it begins with the Sunday of Advent, and there is a reading for every day until Christmas. There are readings for all twelve days of Christmas, and then one reading per Sunday during Epiphany, ending on Transfiguration Sunday. The last section of the book has readings for moveable days , mostly for various saints, then the conversion of St. Paul is the final reading.

David H. Petersen is a wonderful writer for these devotions. I got so much inspiration out of these and can't wait to begin reading the Lent book this coming Ash Wednesday.

I will include one quote that I found fascinating. On page 51, "Ember Wednesday in Advent," we are called to read Isaiah 2:2-5, and 7:10-15. We also get the foretelling of the birth of Jesus to the virgin Mary. Peterson writes, "The virginal conception of Jesus Christ is a sign against our impotence, our standing idly by while Eve is seduced." I cheered when I read this, because I fight against all the blaming of Eve for eating the fruit when Adam was standing right there with her! And he said nothing!

Because of the way Advent falls, there will be readings that don't get read. However, I went ahead and read every reading in the book so I could say that I finished it. If I choose to use this book again, next Advent, I probably will only read the ones that fall on the selected days.

I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone who follows the Church calendar and needs a bit of extra inspiration in their devotionals during Advent, Christmas, and Easter.

Carrying me from Thanksgiving through Transfiguration, this devotional offered daily readings and sermons (by Rev. Petersen) through all of Advent and Christmas, weekly sermons through Epiphany, and sermons for each feast day that fell between late November and the end of January. By far the most scriptural and faithful “Advent” devotion book I’ve ever read, this will be an excellent resource to come back to year after year!!
