All London was stunned when the infamous rake Lucas, Viscount Westmore, vowed to give up the fair sex and exile himself to St. Ives. The infamous rake was known for his love of luxury and his way with the ladies, just as the rugged Cornish coast was known for its savagery, its fearsome gales and its smugglers.
But Luc was determined to turn away from the seduction of perfumed flesh that had ended in tragedy and make his atonement. He never guessed the stormy nights of Cornwall would bring unlooked-for danger, the thrill of the chase, and a long-legged beauty who would tempt him like no other.
Connie Mason or Cara Miles is the best-selling author of more than fifty historical romances and novellas. Her tales of passion and adventure are set in exotic as well as American locales. 3.5 to 4 stars. I have read numerous Connie Mason books and several of them I have really enjoyed. One of them is a favorite of mine. With this one about 55 pages in I was wondering if I should’ve really heeded some of the reviews and perhaps passed on it, but it involved some smuggling and in Cornwall, which is a theme that really appealed to me. Now I know I wasn’t going to get anything close to Poldark mind you as I’m quite familiar with her writing style, but as the book progressed the story became quite enjoyable for the lighter fare that it is and I’m glad I gave it a try.
There is a reason nobody recommends this Connie Mason title - The Last Rogue is completely lifeless. I gave it a good go but the book didn't respect my intelligence or my time, so I ended up whipping past its pages every other day. Our Peeping Tom hero feels guilty that a woman he sees kills herself after he refuses to help her. He decides to take a vow of celibacy and retires to an isolated part of the English Coast. He ends up finding himself intrigued in a woman named the most cringe-worthy name, Bliss, and gets caught up in an illegal smuggling scheme. Was there a point that became interesting? Hm no, not really. Fortunately, I did not pay anything to read this.
I have learned the best way to enjoy a Connie Mason book is to go into it not expecting much. That way you won't be constantly disappointed by the shallow characters and all the SMH moments. While this is the third book in a series, its a stand-alone story.
Lucas, Viscount Westmore, is a sex addict. Every few pages he has an erection which just made me think of that Cialis warning to seek medical attention after four hours. When tragedy lightly touches upon his life, Luc feels guilty and takes a vow of celibacy for a year as punishment. He leaves the temptations of London for the boondocks of St. Ives in Cornwall, where he stumbles upon a smuggling ring being led by the mysterious Shadow. Luc thinks it would be fun to investigate the smugglers. However, his form of investigating is mainly him going around and asking everyone in the village, "Do you know Shadow? Are you Shadow?" I'm just going to assume all those erections redirecting the blood flow from his brain is why Luc is not the most intelligent of men.
The heroine is local gal Bliss Hartley. She thinks it is alright for her and Luc to engage in numerous heavy petting sessions as his Vow of Celibacy will protect her virginity.
I loved the other 2 books in this series, but this one just wasn't as good for me. I was really disappointed with Luc for so many reasons. I guess the first was when he took advantage of her after she said no. I know how these things go in historical romances, most of the times they kiss them into it and then it leads to groping and so forth. In this one, he seemed to grope before he kissed her into it. Then he marries her, takes her home and tries to abandon her while telling her repeatedly that he doesn't love her. Then her father is dying and he goes on a business trip and leaves her at home. Really--- he couldn't postpone a business trip.
I liked him in the other books and he was quite charming when he wanted to be. Just very selfish.
i literally stayed up all night reading this. I was impressed by how much I liked the book. The thing I liked the most is how caring and loving Luc and Bliss behaved toward each other. I'm often frustrated by he emotionally immaturity of characters in historical romances, that wasn't the case at all here. It was so refreshing to read about two people who genuinely care for each other. They each have their flaws but they strive to be better because of their love and for it. This book is a definite keeper. This isn't a tame romance. Its very erotic and steamy and if this is typical of connie mason historical romances count me in.
A hard book to get into. The story sounded really good but something about it just seemed to kind of drag along. I like the strong minded women of the story and the way they deal with their stubborn men..usually completely ignoring their orders. Would like to read the first two stories in the rogue series but not sure since it took about three weeks to read this one. Smugglers, half told truths, a vow of celibacy and hard fought true love.
I just couldn't get into this book. The writing was so elementary and the repeat of conversations and descriptions drove me nuts. I have found some Mason books I enjoyed, but this kinda sucked.
THIS ONE STARTED A BIT SLOW, BUT IT BUILT UP INTO SOMETHING MORE WITH THE SLIGHT MYSTERY SURROUNDING THE HEROINE'S IDENTITY.
OUR HERO is a repentant rake whose plagued by guilt when he failed to protect the woman he had a romp with, and found out that she's pregnant by someone else. In other words, he was almost caught by the Parson's noose and he vowed to help her find a suitable husband who can accept her condition. Unfortunately, she was found floating in the Thames the next day. To atone for his guilt, he leaves London for a reprieve, settling down in a small, secluded sea side town. Who knew that he would find it more than it should be, involving a beautiful woman and illegal smuggling activities about. Lucas is intrigued by Bliss, and soon become caught in the web of her goodwill gone wrong to help the town thrive. Lucas struggles in the story (although not by much) when he finds himself falling for Bliss who then marries him and he was in denial, until life or death situations warrant him to be more truthful to his own heart.
OUR HEROINE is a brave, beautiful young woman who is just trying to get the money for her sick father, and to help her small town thrive. They are extremely mistrustful and suspicious of outsiders and Lucas sniffling around their business is not acceptable. Sadly, she's caught his eye and wherever she goes, he's there. But, she has a secret and it's not something she wants him to know. The funny thing was, Bliss was technically in Lucas's clutch from the moment they met because he literally took the reins to everything, from saving her butt from the hangman and giving her a new home to live in.
OVERALL this was another typical Connie Mason sans the dramatic misunderstanding. It had the right mix of romance, passion and a little heart-tugging moments.
I love the idea of a heroine in an illegal business by the shores of St Ives with the hero trying desperately to mend her ways; however, I disliked how there was a subplot that chose to resolve itself after all the tumultuous events at St. Ives—it seemed to undermine what had happened before, and I found myself skimming paragraphs to get to the end; it just kept dragging on and on.
Lucas exciles himself from London after a tragedy where he failed to save a woman. During his stay in the Cornwall he stumbles upon smugglers and gets a new chance to save another woman. Historical romance and suspense.
Great steamy, love story. Perky trouble so young lady and handsome rouge that Connie mason is famous for. With enough excitement to keep the story strumming.
