One extraordinary Saxon noblewoman and one fearless Viking warrior find passion and danger in this dazzling and sensuous debut

Marissa Campbell's debut novel is a winning combination of romance, history, and adventure sure to appeal to fans of Diana Gabaldon.

It is 869. For eighteen years, Avelynn, the beautiful and secretly pagan daughter of the Eadlorman of Somerset has lived in an environment of love and acceptance. She hasn't yet found a man to make her heart race, but her father has not pressured her to get married. Until now. With whispers of war threatening their land, her father forces Avelynn into a betrothal with Demas, a man who only covets her wealth and status. The dreaded marriage looming, she turns to her faith, searching for answers in an ancient ritual along the coast, only to find Alrik the Blood-Axe and sixty Viking berserkers have landed.

Alrik is unlike any man she has ever known, strong and intriguing. Likewise, he instantly falls for her beauty and courage. The two stumble into a passionate love affair, but it's more than just a greedy suitor who will try to keep them apart.

As the Saxons and Vikings go to war, Avelynn and Alrik find themselves caught in the throes of fate. Can they be true to their people as well as to each other?

I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I had the very misguided thought that this book, despite the premise, would be a light and sexy read that I could snuggle up to and quickly pass the hours with.

There’s certainly a good bit of heat to the tale where it’s due, but there is nothing light about this novel. If anything, it’s harsh and rough and absolutely mesmerizing.

Avelynn is one of the best female leads that I’ve read this year; a spirited and strong woman, a warrior, who would do anything to defend her home and her people. A beautiful story, full of pain and love, it’s a testament to what hope and courage can hope to accomplished despite the many mistakes that the human heart and mind can make in its struggle to survive.

As the first thing that I have ever read by Marissa Campbell, I am won over and eager to see what other story she might put forth.

"It's dangerous for a woman to tread into men's waters."

Well, well, well! New Historical fiction Author is on my horizon!

Rating- 3.5 stars

Let's go straight into what the plot is about!

Avelynn is the daughter of the Earl of Somerset,
She has been raised as the lady of the house, she's full of stubborn indignation, she's a powerful woman in her own right...
Until her father shackles her in a betrothal,
a loathsome betrothal to a loathsome man.
She doesn't know why the Goddess is doing this to her,
Is it because of her pagan belief in a christian land?
Everything is full of deceit, of bitterness, of death.
War is looming, blood has been spilt and the treachery dawns.
Her path crosses with that of a man, a man who makes her heart sing the song of love,
but it is forbidden.
How could she love the enemy?

This book caught me by surprise! I mean, the first 70% of the book i read it and i was like "oh yea, this is nice but not that original" and then the last 30% happened, and I was blown away!

Let me explain,

The story revolves around the forbidden love between a Saxon woman and a Viking man in the dawn of viking invasion.

Therefore as an aside I want to say that this book is very much of an adult book, with sexual situations (as in this is an invasion, raping and pillaging is somewhat described), also sexual themes and language.

When this story began, I was really impressed at the wealth of the historical depth in this book, and the gumption that Avelynn demonstrated. You gotta love a woman who stands up for herself. She was determined and didn't take crap from anyone.

I was a bit unimpressed with the romance though, it was very insta-lust but Alrik grew on me.

One word, Demas- that sleezy, egoistical, maniacal psychopath! Man! I HATE HIM! *clears throat* he is the embodiment of the word vile. just saying. He was a serious son-of-a-sith

So, like i mentioned before, the first 70% revolved around Alrik and Avelynn frolicking in the forbidden but then that last 30% happened and my jaw dropped to the floor. THOSE PLOT TWISTS WERE UNREAL!! I nearly popped a nerve from stress! I kept wondering what would happen, I had dread coursing through my veins and bile demolishing my stomach! I know it sounds intense but it really was like that!!

I loved how strong Avelynn was, man she was a kickbutt heroine- A shield maiden indeed! woo!

One thing i loved about this book is how rich it is in ancient religion! I'm a sucker for a book on ancient religions, they fascinate me. Not that I believe in them, I'm just a curious munchkin! So this one illustrated the faiths from ancient Ireland and Norse mythology. It brought it to life.

Well done Campbell!

If this type of genre is your thing then you'll really enjoy it!

That being said though, was it historically accurate? No. but honestly what historical fiction is 100% accurate?

Stay awesome my lovelies!

When I see the printed words "debut novel", I unfairly but naturally expect the book to be written in an almost underdeveloped fashion. I can happily say this did not meet any unfair expectations. What I experienced was an enchanting adventure, written by someone with both writing experience and natural talent. I appreciated most that it had the right amount of everything; romance, suspense, action, heart-break, and these aspects were strewn out so evenly throughout the story. The plot never played on too much of one emotion, but expertly wielded a fair amount of all.

Anyone who knows me knows I'm very picky about character development. Avelynn, our protagonist, was strong-willed for her time, as all the best historical heroines are. It was easy to sympathize with her predicament and connect with her as a woman of my own time, holding similar values. Aetheflaed was bad-ass, and by far my favorite character. Can't pronounce her name but she was awesome. Avelynn's father, however, seemed a bit naive for his position. I kept thinking that someone with that much power and influence would forsee or even eventually notice (on his own) the oh-so-obvious deceitfulness that occurred right in front of his face. As for our primary villain, he seemed to me to be only evil. I would have liked to see more of the fragility that the evil must take root in.

Ah, okay so as for the romance, I got the impression that this was going to be a romance-focused story, and I guess some of it was but I don't think I expected it to be quite so erotic. This was fine, just pretty surprising. I mean wew, it was pretty steamy. The only thing I didn't quite like was how instantly trust seemed to occur between Avelynn and Alrik, especially when it had already been stated that Avelynn hadn't trusted any of her previous suitors. It just seemed a bit unrealistic for her character.

The action was pretty awesome. There was more violence than I expected. This is definitely where Campbell is most adept at making readers squirm. As someone with a profound fencing appreciation, I was thrilled with how many sword-fights there were. Overall, the action absolutely MADE the book for me.

I don't know who I would recommend this to, since it seems to fit into many genres. If it absolutely needed a classification, I'd label this as a historical-fiction, new-adult novel. I read the book in one sitting, which I don't do too often anymore. I look forward to Marissa Campbell's later novels, which I think will only grow in appeal.

9th century England. Avelynn is a strong minded Saxon maiden that dreads her upcoming nuptials and the corner that many, including her future bridegroom want to put her in. Like her parents, Avelynn wants to marry for love and maintain the independence nurtured by her father's upbringing. Although many of her people have adopted Christianity as their religion, Avelynn still secretly prays and performs the rituals of her mother's people- the Irish. It is during one of these rituals that Avelynn meets Alrik; a Viking raider and the two begin a passionate affair. But Avelynn is conflicted about whether she can leave England and begin a new life in the land of the Vikings.

I was hooked from the very beginning of the story and it reminded me a bit of shows like The Last Kingdom and Vikings. When I began the story, I was unaware that it was the first in a new series, but I am definitely eager to continue reading. I did feel the romance and battle scenes balanced each other out and I felt that Avelynn was the type of character that I could root for as she faced many adversaries along the way. However, I do wish that there had been a pronunciation guide of Saxon and Norse names included in the book.

Caution: When I purchased this book, it was in the YA section. Most likely because Avelynn is a teenage heroine. However, if you are uncomfortable with your daughter watching the shows I named OR don't want her reading books like Outlander or Sarah Maas' books, there are some sexual scenes throughout the book.

The Dark Ages come alive in this historical adventure romance debut! A strong female lead must choose between the man her father says she is to wed and the Viking enemy who has stolen her heart. In a war-torn land, can Avelynn save her people and earn the right to choose her own destiny?

Her father's lenience allows Avelynn to overstep the set boundaries for women and he hasn't felt the need to curtail her until now. He has spoiled her, especially after his beloved wife's death. After four years of waiting for Avelynn to choose a husband, her father Eadlorman of Somerset chooses a husband for her in order to protect her from an oncoming war. For Avelynn, not marrying for love is a fate worth fighting to the death.

Avelynn's pagan faith is strong, yet practiced in secret within a Christian land. She enlists her tutor's help, who is also her mentor, and they find a deserted beach where Avelynn can worship unseen. When a Viking breaks her protected circle, Avelynn doesn't expect another Viking to save her. Alrik charms Avelynn like no other man, and they agree to meet in secret again in the future.

Like many strong heroines in fiction, Avelynn has many attributes in her favor. She is trained in warfare and knows how to fight. She has assisted in decisions within her father's council, so she knows how to reason. Her sense of fairness often irritates her father and her adversaries but pleases her people. She has been allowed freedom not necessarily given to most women in her position. This makes Avelynn strong and opinionated, as well as not able to cope with her father's decisions when they're not equal to her desires. Her growth as a character derives out of hard lessons learned throughout the story.

Upon the suggestion of her best friend who is married to the king's brother, Avelynn decides to meet Alrik secretly once again. She's sure she can find a way out of her pending marriage but she doesn't yet realize how far her betrothed will go to make her his. Determined to find a way out of her future, while still keeping her younger brother and her people safe, Avelynn becomes a pawn in a deadly game of cat and mouse.

This novel takes place in a time of history that I don't read as often, so I had some difficulty getting into the rhythm of the book at first. Some of the character names are difficult and somewhat similar, so I became confused a few times in the beginning. They're realistic names so if you read this time period or fantasy, you won't have any trouble with them. This historical adventure had enough flavor to make it realistic but not overtly to make it a slow read for me. I think if you like fiction with a mixture of historical realism and Celtic mythology, you'll enjoy this first book in what promises to be an exciting series.

This novel gets better with every chapter. Avelynn grows into a woman with strong convictions, willing to risk everything for what is right. I enjoyed the pagan twists in this story and I can't wait to find out if Avelynn succeeds in her dream for more peaceful times for her people. Despicable villains increase tension and I'm betting we haven't heard the last from them either.

I enjoyed the historical accuracy in this book, so much so that I did some research to further my knowledge. That helped me to understand how "Viking" and "pirate" were used interchangeably, something I didn't understand at first. The pagan and Christian difficulties in the ninth century are well versed, offering some insight into the plight of both sides in this dark period of history. The gory aspects of war are vividly depicted and may make some readers squeamish, but they're necessary to continue the plot. Some of the torture horrified me so I had to look it up to find out if it was true. What I found was historically accurate so it's there with purpose. I loved the inclusion of the mystical Avalon within the story and look forward to how that's used in future books.

Marissa Campbell has done her research, creating a sensual love story with enough closure, but still dangles a few unanswered questions to increase anticipation for the next book. I hope Avelynn's brother Edward will be a primary character in book two. A stimulating new voice in historical fiction is always welcome and I'm anxious for Marissa Campbell's next endeavor. If you love historical adventure with a bit of old world mysticism mixed in, add AVELYNN to your next-to-read list.

Where do I even start with the book? It doesn't happen often, but occasionally I read a book that has so many less-than-redeeming qualities contained within its pages that I scarcely know where to begin. That, in a nutshell, describes Avelynn, quite possibly the worst Viking romance I've ever read.

So, who is Avelynn? Well, despite her improbable name, she is the daughter of a Saxon noble. Remember now that she's Saxon because pretty much nothing else in the plot signals her as such. Despite being the daughter of a high-ranking Saxon, she inexplicably practices what appears to be some form of Celtic druidic religion. At some point in the story, she even becomes a high priestess.

Avelynn is also strong-willed and determined. Despite the fact that she lives in 9th century Wessex, she has no problem stepping up to the plate to help her father, the earl, make big decisions. Given that Avelynn essentially lives as a 21st century woman in medieval times, it naturally comes as something of a shock when she learns that her father has betrothed her to Demas without her having much say in the matter. In the background, we learn that Viking raids threaten the land and politically, the betrothal to Demas makes sense to Avelynn's father.

At first it appears that the handsome Demas might be the hero of this book, but we soon learn that this is not to be. He behaves in an overbearing fashion to Avelynn and eventually cements his role as villain by threatening Avelynn on various occasions and by having skanky villain sex in the woods. In fact, the author even makes a point of it being gay villain sex. On reading something like that, one almost feels torn between feeling speechless and well, having all the cuss words.

So, is there romance in this novel? Well, Avelynn is billed as historical fiction, but there actually is a romance plot. While out performing one of her druidic rituals, Avelynn is discovered by a raiding party of Norsemen led by Alrik. Don't worry, Alrik of course recognizes the sacredness of said druid rituals and even has one of his own men killed for disturbing Avelynn's worship. [I think my fingers are even saying "WTF??" as I type this.] Alrik and Avelynn are so struck with lust or something like it that they whisper sweet nothings and Avelynn naturally manages to return to the beach for the raiding party's next trip through, and she and her Alrik have random sex. As one does, I suppose.

This book is more than a simple historical romance. It's so much more than that. It's truly a journey, with accurate historical facts that will make you feel like you're right there. It's realistic.

Our heroine, Avelynn has to be one of the strongest female characters I've read about. She's not a spoiled teen; she's not a weak girl that has no voice or is afraid to say it how it is. She's the exact opposite. She's a young lady that will, one day, rule instead of her father and is being groomed for that. She does have a voice - a really loud one, thank God - and she never fails to express how she feels.

She makes mistakes. She makes bad choices. Don't we all? But she knows that if she won't try, she won't know whether it would work or not. She does everything to fight the life that has been decided for her by her father. She fights everything, tooth and nail, and until she can't stand anymore. But she's still not broken, she's still not defeated.

There was a romance in this story too, one that, I think, is actually more in the background, than at the forefront of the book. The main theme here is the evolution of our heroine. And, judging by the ending, she still has a lot to grow.

4.5 - 5 stars and really looking forward to more.

This book was hard for me to review. On one hand I finished it and wanted to know what happened to the characters but on the other hand I had a hard time buying into the romance aspect of the novel. I felt like it was trying to be both a romance novel and a novel about a woman fighting for her destiny and while books can successfully be both, this one fell short in the romance aspect for me.

Sure there were some heated scenes which were promising and even the romance line seemed promising in the beginning but I was having a hard time buying into the fact that they met once and bam were in love…..lust, sure no problem, but the love part was hard for me to accept given their limited time together. I almost felt like it would have been better if the author had nixed the romance and went for woman and her destiny instead.

There was too much time between Alrik and Avelynn the romance and Avelynn the woman to successfully mesh the two story lines together…….maybe if it were longer it would have helped.

That said there were things that I liked, because I did read it and did want to know what happened to the characters so I can honestly say I was interested. I also liked that the author was bold in some of the sexuality in the book. There were some homosexual scenes that I thought were an interesting twist in the novel and in the character storylines. Not to mention I thought they were tastefully done, not graphic but more sensual in nature not to mention very natural in their portrayal.

This is a debut novel and in that regard I think it shows promise…..with a little tweaking and refining this novel would be wonderful. It has all the right parts but lacks some refinement. I like that the author was unconventional with Avelynn’s character and some of the sexual elements, but I would have liked to have seen the two storylines mesh a little better.

Overall Campbell shows promise with her characters and a tantalizing sexuality that with refinement could become a serious contender in the romance market!

The first half was pretty slow for me. And for a book marketed as a romance, we had instalove, separation, sex, separation, sex and then separation again. Literally, that's what happened. Luckily the second half picked up and things actually started happening. Still Avelynn and Alrik spent very little time together throughout any of the book which is disappointing because I don't believe in instalove so there was nothing to back up their relationship. But I appreciated the historical details and the setting of the time period. Still for medieval books I'll probably stick with Elizabeth Chadwick and the The Circle of Ceridwen series.

I first approached this book with a bit of trepidation. A romance set during the Saxon/Viking era of old, old England? Hmmm ...

Well, my worries were unfounded - I really enjoyed Marissa Campbell's story of love, war, romance and battles. Campbell's characters are strong and remarkable (especially the lead character Avelynn - she is feisty, headstrong, but is also very smart and has a big heart for her people), the story is intriguing, and the setting is actually quite magnificent.

If you like your novels with a bit of conflict, a bit of history and a lot of lusty romance, then "Avelynn" will be right up your alley! I highly recommend this book for historical fiction fans.

*4.5 Birdies
Review Posted on Reading Lark 9/29/15: http://readinglark.blogspot.com/2015/...

Avelynn is a beautiful young girl living in England in the year 869. Her father is a powerful noble and she will inherit a portion of his estate upon his death, but as a woman her power is severely limited outside of her father's lands. Avelynn represents a young woman who wishes to make her own path; she is intelligent and tenacious.

Like so many young women in this time period, Avelynn is forced into a betrothal with a man she does not love. The marriage is a political move that will unite her with a man she loathes. Demas, her intended, makes it very clear that he holds no affection for her and will control her with an iron fist. Avelynn refuses to bend to her father's will and plans to find a way to end her betrothal. She feels that to marry Demas will result in misery or death. Avelynn craves the ability to make her own choices and find true love. As her father and brother head to Rome, Avelynn is left in charge of the estate. It will be her chance to prove that she is just as a capable as a man, but many think that she oversteps her place as a woman and her list of enemies grows.

In addition to fighting the gender roles of her time period, Avelynn also must deal with the fact that her Pagan religion is no longer accepted in England. Her Irish mother instilled in her the worship of the Goddess and Avelynn is determined to not lose her beliefs in spite of the fact that she could be killed for them. It is her religion that lures her to sacred land on the coast to perform a ritual. This move will place her in the path of the handsome Viking, Alrik the Blood-Axe. Alrik is everything Avelynn has wished for in a man; he is handsome, brave, and passionate. But can she lose her heart to a man who is the enemy of her Saxon people?

I loved the relationship between Avelynn and Alrik. There is something swoon worthy about a handsome blond Viking. Alrik is also not the villain the Saxons paint all Vikings to be. He has a deep attraction to Avelynn that morphs into a devotion. These two would lay down their lives in order to keep the other safe. Together, Avelynn and Alrik make a fearsome pair. I certainly wouldn't want to run into either of them in a dark alley.

I do have a few slight issues with this one. I tend to like the intimacy in novels to leave something left to the imagination, but the scenes in this one won't be anything that would make a traditional romance reader blush. There were also some gruesome scenes that made me cringe, but they were true to the time period. My biggest issue was the ending left lots of loose ends. I can only hope that there will be another novel to tie those bits up, but if not, I would find the ending less than fruitful.

In spite of my few issues, I enjoyed every moment spent lost in this novel. Avelynn is a well written, adventurous historical fiction that is laced with romance, intrigue, and war. I loved that Avelynn was a woman before her time fighting for equality in a world in which she shouldn't have had a voice. She is certainly an example of the quotation that well behaved women rarely make history. I highly recommend this one to fans of historical fiction who like some romance thrown in with rich details and compelling characters.

One Last Gripe: The ending

Favorite Thing About This Book: Learning more about the conflict between the Saxons and the Vikings

First Sentence: Sigberht gripped the hilt of his sword, and my heart quickened.

Favorite Character: Avelynn

Least Favorite Character: Demas

Avelynn was what I expected, let me add I am looking forward to what I assume will be the next book, as Campbell continues to blossom in both writing and content as demonstrated in this book. No denying my affinity towards extremely strong independent female protagonists, contributing to my partiality for Avelynn.

Avelynn is strong-willed, refusing to bend to the will of men or the times. She’s fierce, courageous and fearless. Determined to carve out a future on her terms despite the risks of shunning submission. As much fondness felt towards Avelynn there were times when her progressiveness felt misplaced, however, I appreciate the authors depiction. No doubt women of this caliber existed paving a future for others. Quite a heroine, most charismatic.

The supporting cast adds to the plot, although I wish more emphasis was spent on a select few, while less attention from others. Expanding on Muirgen and Edward would have been welcomed. Also developing an actual relationship with Alrik as opposed to clandestine sexual encounters would have been a marked improvement. Their chemistry was nonexistent, I felt they demonstrated graceless towards each other, no real emotion besides lust and even that felt uneasy. The detail to their unions could have been a bit tamer, in some instances fewer details translates to more for the reader, minute intimate descriptions felt mislaid.

I was hoping for less romance, in fact, I felt the involvement with Alrik was distracting and ultimately predictable. Love triangles no matter the circumstances can be a messy diversion which in this case happened. I understand Demas played a key role in the entire story but it also lead to the dreaded foreboding factor.

I’m on the fence with Avelynn’s pagan/high priestess demonstrations – seems to be acting as filler since Druidism, Christianity was mentioned quickly in passing to set the tone of the times. I understand where Campbell was going with this, uncertain of her landing after it was all said and done.

Campbell did her research without a doubt, she successfully sculpted a feisty strong-willed female character of heroine status. Certainly more will tell of Avelynn’s fate through the lens of the creative writing of Campbell. Avelynn herself makes this a worthwhile read, especially for historical romance and historical fiction fans.

5* At last, a female protagonist who rolls on her own

AVELYNN by Marissa Campbell is already an auspicious debut thanks to kudos from New York Times best seller Susannah Kearsley. Not only does it feature high stakes heroics set against insurmountable odds in 9th Century Saxon England, but it takes the uncommon approach of setting the female protagonist down amidst a wild band of Viking marauders that she conquers, not just through sex, but through visceral, physical chutzpah with a broad sword. Travelling the length and breadth of the land in search of justice, Avelynn is made real because she gets dirty, bleeds, suffers failures and fights back. She is not the stuff of Marvel Comics people, but a real flesh and blood woman of the kind not seen lately in fiction or on HBO. A pagan priestess, she relies on spells and potions to assist her in her quest, but there are no dragons, merlins or otherwise supernatural beings to get her out of a jam. It’s all her in a rich tapestry of details that set this readers sense’s alight: I could smell the fires at night. For those who like a good fight, check out AVELYNN.

FIVE STAR review from Crossroads Reviews http://www.crossroadreviews.com/2015/...

This one OMG I just died over. Ive been pagan for over 20 years and this was just soaked with the correct terms etc. I loved it! The story could be very closely related to others like Romeo and Juliet etc. Where two people from waring people fall in love. It was a breathtaking read. I loved how the author did the intimate scenes without them being cheap or disgusting. You could tell that they had a love and draw to each other.

Each character was amazing. I would really love another story about Avelynn's parents. It would be wonderful to know about them more.

This is a really hard book to review because of spoilers. But the descriptions and story and of course the characters were just so perfect in this book.

So one I want in finished signed copy.

Beautiful writing that flows, (no purple prose here!) wonderful historical detail of the Medieval/Saxon/Viking period, a strong and lovable protagonist, with a romance aspect that does not take over.

If you love books full of medieval forests, filled with wolves, wild boar and bears; and adventures that involve traveling horse-back with satchels packed, only to pitch a tent and feed from the forest; along with details of ancient Norse religions, this book is for you :-)

Note: Although the protagonist in this story is seventeen years of age, this is by no means a book for YA's! There are many adult scenes: sections of a sexual nature, and instances of violence/torture.

This book has such beautiful writing, I had to slow down my speed reading to enjoy every single word. Marissa makes everything seem effortless, and the rhythm of her sentences is gorgeous. I'm a huge, huge fan!

The story here is heartfelt. I loved, Avelynn's journey! LOVED IT! I love that she's strong woman in a man's world, and I loved watching her fall in love.

...and here I thought I wasn't in to historical fiction.

5 Stars. I'll be reading this one again and again.

Yet another stunning debut I've read this summer! Marissa Campbell is making me love historical romance and I really never thought I would be into it, yet here I am, eagerly waiting for her next book. I finished Avelynn in one day, friends. ONE DAY. It's been in my to-read pile for a couple of weeks and I had a break in review action and I thought I'd just give this one a whirl when my kids were gone for the week and man alive, I devoured it.

In the story we have Avelynn, a Saxon by birth and she's part of a socially well placed family. She is on the edge of 18, which means she should have been well and married by now but she doesn't want to settle. She's a romantic at heart and she's holding out for a guy who gives her butterflies. Her very practical father thinks this is ridiculous (though hypocritical because Avelynn's mother gave him the butterflies and vice versa, but her mother has long since died so he doesn't see Avelynn's reasoning), and commands her to marry Demas. Which, from the word go, you realize Demas is a skeez and a total dirt bag but the height of his depravity doesn't really hit us full force until the second half of the book. But Avelynn is also a practicing witch destined to be a high priestess, which is strictly forbidden during this time. Basically, if anyone accuses her of being a witch her death will not be easy nor swift.

I want to share a passage in the book that just struck me as relevant to even now, if only in a different perspective:

Ten generations ago, when Goddess ruled the land, a woman was free to choose her mate, even casting him aside if the whim overtook her. But when the Christian church grappled England to her knees, a woman's rights began to vanish. I could own land, and my oath was respected, but decisions such as marriage were at the sole discretion of my father.

Sure, we might not be forced into marriages in most modern societies, but women's rights are challenged daily in different arenas. So from that perspective, maybe that's what got me hooked in the book, so much of the book could be compared to modern politics. If you aren't necessarily a fan of historical romance, if you go into it with that mindset, you might end up really enjoying this book.

Anyways, on a trip to Avalon to visit her mother's grave and do a ceremony to give her guidance on what to do about Demas, she's interrupted by Viking's, who are not fans of Saxons. Just as she's about to be attacked, the Viking goes down and there stands... Viking Alrik.

Commence butterflies.

This is the start of what really is a star-crossed lover situation. Avelynn has to go back because war is looming so they set up a series of rendezvous. In the meantime, Avelynn learns about her family (a start of a family history at least), the losses she experiences are tremendous and your heart just breaks for her, war breaks out, she makes terrible decisions, she puts her life in danger, ends up in the arms of not-so-nice Vikings, all hell breaks loose, someone's penis gets hurt (yes, that happened and I cringed on his behalf), and romance. Swoon.

I have zero complaints about this book. When I first finished it, I demanded a sequel like RIGHT NOW (is there a sequel?! I have no idea but I kind of hope so!), but even if there will not be a sequel, it gives you a fantastic ending. It got dicey, I wasn't sure if I would need to be resuscitated at the end but all is well, I'm alive and breathing. And so ridiculously in love with this book And this author. I'm all in, whatever Marissa Campbell throws at me, I'm all in.

I'm told fans of Diana Gabaldon would absolutely love this and I can't say because I've not read anything by Diana Gabaldon (I know, don't judge! It's on my to-read list, CALM DOWN.). But I do know this is a solid historical romance book and you will love Avelynn. I have to give this book 5 out of 5 stars. You know how stingy I am with my stars but I'm not kidding, I am in love with this book.

Avelynn is one of my favorite characters I have come across in a while. When the novel first opens she is almost too smart and willful for her own good, especially given the time she lives in. But being raised and educated to believe she was meant for more than the traditional roles of a well-born girl, not only expected to run her father's estate when he is gone but to become a pagan high priestess (this, of course, hidden from most everyone since the move to Christianity would find her burned for that designation), she is not willing to let her father broker a marriage to a man she doesn't love, even if it might keep her safe from the invading Vikings. This spirit doesn't fade but deepens and matures, even when Avelynn is faced with a murderous and conniving fiancée and uncle determined to take everything away from her or with the possibility of having to leave the world she has always known behind to escape to freedom with Alrik. Through it all her faith, strength and determination to set all the wrongs that befall her right and claim what is hers never waivers and she remains true to herself. Given all that happens to her during the novel I find this remarkable and I was cheering her on the whole way.

The mysticism and traditions of Avelynn's pagan faith are fascinating and very well developed. This sort of otherworldly aspect was a wonderful counterpoint to the more solid and real dangers and obligations that she faced in her life. I found it interesting that the "savage, blood-thirsty" Vikings seemed to have more respect for Avelynn's religion than her English Christian counterparts. Through the novel it was made perfectly clear that there were horrid individuals on both sides of the battle, but kindness and loyalty too.

Sensitive readers should be warned that there are quite graphic battle and sex scenes throughout Avelynn. I found them perfectly fitting given the context of the novel but thought it should be noted for those that are squeamish about that sort of thing. The passion between Avelynn and Alrik is palpable and watching it develop and deepen into true love and respect was very satisfying.

The book ends with just about every possible storyline left waving in the breeze unresolved. Going over what those are would give away too much of the surprising plot twists but I will say I am very eager to see what happens next for Avelynn, Alrik and many of the other characters. Being that Avelynn seems resolved to take a stand against those that have wronged her, I have a feeling the next book is going to be choked full of action and conflict.

Loving history as much as I do, I really wish the author had included an author note of some kind at the end of the novel, giving the reader a better idea of what was fact and where the story moved off to fiction. The battle strategies, celebration traditions and both Christian and Pagan worship practices are very well drawn and I will have to look further into whether these are true to history or not. I plan to do just that as having read Avelynn has sparked an interest in Medieval history and I cannot wait to learn more about it.

I recently read a book called Avelynn, by Marissa Campbell. The scene setting in 869, it features a protagonist named Avelynn, who is a young, noble, strong-willed Saxon woman attempting to forge her future during a volatile time in England that is the Viking invasion.

Upon hearing about this book, I immediately wanted to read it. Those that know my reading style know I'm not much for romance, unless it's historically tastefully done and makes me swoon right along with them. And generally, the woman must be a very independent type. The synopsis of this book, with it featuring Vikings, is pretty much what sold the book to me to read. Though it is a debut novel, coming out Sept. 8, 2015, it was so strikingly done and now I'm sold on her writing style.

The book reminded me, of course, a little about my favorite show, "Vikings." However, ultimately it swept me off on it's own tale to a another place and time as her eloquent storytelling was set with scenery of perfect description. I became wrapped up in the life of Avelynn, loving her character and personality, intertwined in her hopes, dreams, desires, and passion, and her character development was amazing. You can tell that Marissa is either a seasoned writer or has a wealth of talent, or both, as her flowing style will have you mesmerized from the first chapter.

I love the action scenes, as I do love a good battle, much of what I like about the show Vikings or any other historical epic. I thought she wrote those fairly well and created suspense throughout the book. I'm more for the action and suspense in the book than for the steamy love scenes, but yet, when done with passion as these were and the most compelling wording, I find myself slowly opening up to this in books. I think her writing in these parts was sensual and divine, not cheesy like the romances I abhor. She bound together the chaos of the time with the fervent desires of the flesh and it made me love this book.

The historical research into the time period, as well as all the other little details, amazed me. I liked her drippings of paganism into the story, which were moving and authentic, and the thought processes she used in her characters. This was no light and fluffy romance read by any means. I think that as she writes more into this series (that's me hoping she does), she'll grow even deeper as a writer and can stand with some of the best historical fiction writers in the genre as she can appeal to many. Thomas Dunne is certainly finding some of the best talent out there and Marissa has a great amount of potential.

A story full of hope, tragedy, sacrifice, and love. I highly recommend this book if you are looking to get swept away this fall; and if you like books by Susanna Kearnsley, you'll want to devour Avelynn. I'm in love with Avelynn's determined warrior nature and I absolutely can't wait to visit her world again. Part historical fiction interspersed with romance and part fantasy, this book will captivate you for a day and stay with you for much longer. A strong 4 stars!

I received a copy of this in exchange for my honest review, which I've given.

Avelynn has been the jewel of the Earl of Somerset. Suitors come to seek her aid, but she was given the choice to refuse them. However, when rumors about war from the Vikings seem to come true, her father decides to protect her into an arranged marriage to Demas. She finds out that Demas is not the gentle suitor he seems to be, but rather a dark man filled with ambition and with a desire to control her. Because she is doomed to marry this man, she turns to her faith as a pagan. During one of her pagan rituals, she meets Alrik, a Viking and her enemy. However, with her impending marriage and with war with the Vikings, she finds her star-crossed love with Alrik to be doomed.

Avelynn is a strong heroine, and very admirable. She is headstrong and tries to live her own life. She is disappointed when her father chooses her bridegroom for her, but she is not complacent. Instead, she tries her best to fight her marriage. I also found her to be a good ruler. When her father is absent, she becomes regent for her father. I thought she was practical and made good decisions. Another thing is that she can fight. She is not afraid to take up arms to fight for those she loves. Therefore, Avelynn was feisty and spirited, and she made a fun heroine. She is also human, and makes mistakes. However, she learns from them. She eventually understands that the choices she makes could have consequences.

Overall, this book is about friendship, family, love, choices, and responsibility. It is about a woman’s quest of finding her own happiness and to fulfill her role that is passed down to her. I liked how this story has a King Arthur reference, and this story has a little bit of fantasy. This story reminds me of The Mists of Avalon. I did feel that the love story was not fleshed out, and I felt that it was an instant infatuation. This is because Alrik is absent for most of the story, and I would have liked a little more appearance of Alrik so that I could enjoy the love story more. Still, I found the storyline to be very interesting, and I liked how it is set in Anglo-Saxon times. This novel is very meticulously researched and the writing is very beautiful. I will definitely read this next book in the Avelynn series. This book is not only perfect for fans of historical fiction, but to fans of Marion Zimmer Bradley.

“Avelynn” by Marissa Campbell is an intriguing novel about a passionate woman from the 800’s. She was not raised like a normal girl was during that time period. She had been allowed by her father to speak her mind, and to have some say in her future; to a point. Eventually he becomes tired of waiting for her to choose a husband, and decides to choose one for her. Avelynn is set on marrying for love and passion, and the man her father has chosen for her is her worst nightmare. However, she has met a man who ignite the flames of passion inside her, something that no other man has done. Problem is, there is no way she can be with him, and no way would her father or anyone approve of him.

This is an interesting book, and I like Avelynn’s character. I like that she is passionate, and that she is a strong female character in a time when women were made to be submissive, and had their lives mapped out for them by their fathers. I don’t feel like I really knew her though, at least not as well as I would have liked. I felt that I knew her character on the surface, but I would have liked to understand her thoughts and feelings more. Like, her “dabbling” with the goddess rituals—I felt like there was not a whole lot that led up to this. Also, we were only introduced to the man she is betrothed to that she can’t stand, and we’re given a quick glimpse of one suitor that she had turned down, but it would have been interesting to have an idea of what other types of men she had rejected. I don’t know, I just felt like I didn’t know her very well as a reader, so it was hard to get really invested in her character, I liked her, but didn’t love her, if that makes sense. Also, while it is an interesting book, it took a while to pick up. I really didn’t get interested in it until she met the man that she basically fell passionately in love with in less than a day. After that happened, the book began to pick up, and there was some suspense, and something to look forward to. Prior to that, it did drag for me.

“Avelynn” is well written, and the author obviously did her research when writing it. I like the descriptions, and the author’s writing style, and I would recommend this book to readers, because I think that it is a book that people will enjoy. I usually enjoy historical fiction that is based on a real historical figures life, so that could possibly be why this wasn’t a five star book for me? As it is, I would give this book a 3.5-4 stars out of 5.

Set in 869 Dark Ages with paranormal elements. A Saxon Lady,Avelynn, turned Warrior and a Viking, Alrik, a tale that transcends worlds, kingdoms and the ages. Fast paced, action packed. Written in first person, through Avelynn's perception or voice.
Well written with depth, and vivid descriptions. Not for the of faint heart.
There is much tragedy, challenges, romance, sadness, passion, betrayal, deceit, druids, secrets, death, myths and the power of love. There are so many deceptions and lies in Avelynn's life, it's hard to tell whose friend or foe. Then there's Avelynn's ittle brother, Edward, who is in danger as well. She would do anything to protect him. Then there is her devious betrothed, Demas.
Avelyn proves to be a true warrior. Her Viking, Alrik, proves to be strong and determined to save Avelynn, even at the cost of banishment.
I love the way Avelynn withstood everything thrown at her,all she lost, her courage, her bravery to do what she preserved right and she still managed to survive to become even stronger and more determined to save her people. But she never lost sight of love.
My only regret, so many questions left unanswered. I see another book in the making. Fans of Paranormal, Druids, ancient times, Viking invasion, Saxons, romance and finding love will enjoy "Avelynn". There is so much to this amazing story. Not just another Historical Romance. I was amazed and left aghast at all Avelynn endured, and managed not to be bitter. A must read and a definite keeper.
Readers....you will need tissues. This is not only a tear jerker, but a passionate tale of survival and love. The romance between a Saxon She-Warrior and a Viking Warrior who find their fate and their destiny is astounding to say the least. An enjoyable and satisfying read! Highly recommended for fans of strong heroines, who show everyone she can and WILL survive. What an amazing tale! Be warned...this is a very intense, compelling and powerful story!!
Can't wait to see what Ms. Campbell has in store for her fans next.

Set in the Dark Ages, Avelynn is a debut novel by Marissa Campbell. The main character is Avelynn, a young Saxon noblewoman who helps her father rule the kingdom in Somerset. She is secretly a Pagan high priestess who every so often goes to an island by the name of Avalon to perform her rituals until the Vikings invade. Against her wishes she is betrothed to Demas, a man who she fears and despises.

While on one of her visits to Avalon, she meets a much hated Viking, Alrik who she comes to love but knows that their love is doomed as he is a hated and feared Viking. Even though he is kind and loving to her, he is still an enemy to her people and country. She knows that she needs to do her duty but when her father and young brother go off to fight the enemy and end up with the sickness, she finds herself to be in charge of the Kingdom. Demas becomes an enemy to her in her own kingdom, he does not love her or she him and all he wants is her wealth and the status. He is one evil self-serving man and will do all in his power to see that he gets what he wants. He is not the only enemy that she has as of course she is a woman and most men of the time feel that a woman does not belong in the battlefield or anywhere else other than in the running of a household.

As war is inevitable and in war comes tragedy and death including those closest to Avelynn she is tasked with being a warrior and leader that her people can trust. There is plenty of intrigue, heated romance scenes and historical detail of a time in Britain's violent history that kept me turning the pages. Can her love for Alrik endure or will she have to forsake him for duty? I love a good historical fiction story and this one kept me interested. Rich in historical detail, it appeared that the author did a lot of research without the book becoming a history book that can get pretty dry. I would recommend this story if you like your stories to be steamy but at the same time readable with a good plot without being mushy.

I received an arc of the book for review and was not monetarily compensated for my thoughts.

I am a sucker for debut novels, especially HF and when they take place in a time period I am unfamiliar with, all the better. Puts a little bit of pressure on the author right there, with Avelynn I was not disappointed at all.

I like Avelynn, a strong and determined woman, smart and brave as well. The late 800's was a brutal time in England, not just because of the Vikings, but also for the fact that women were at the mercy of man, with no choice as to the direction their life went. The author created a story of suspense and mystery as Avelynn took/tried to take control of her life. Not knowing what was taking place this book had me nervous with each page turn as to what would happen next. It just seemed she hit so many obstacles on this journey and history does not always have that 'happy ever after' ending.

The supernatural part of this story was interested and it added that extra element which fit right into the story. Though the romance part didn't quite resonate too well with me, maybe because of the time gap, I am not totally sure. The ending left it open for a sequel and I hope there will be one because I will like to see what is next for Avelynn.

The author definitely knows this time period and the amount of research is evident, though I would have loved to see author notes at the end end just to see what was real and fiction.

With comparisons to Outlander, I was immediately intrigued but would have never imagined I'd end up so lost in Avelynn's pages. Marissa Campbell has crafted a beautifully researched world full of intrigue and power and I was SO there. While the romance was a bit too quick, I nonetheless stood in their corner cheering them on (and I should point out that the romance is extremely detailed! Definitely for older readers!) I'm absolutely impressed with Campbell's debut and am thrilled to see what she tackles next - a sequel, perhaps??

The intricate layers of Marissa Campbells' book Avelynn were impressive for any work but more so as this was her historical romance debut! In an engaging writing style Ms. Campbell quickly captures her audience and relates a fast paced and detailed story full of angst, bravery and passion. Set in the Dark Ages this author did a fine job of incorporating multiple facets of the period, from the social constraints of women to the political currents dictating the era, yet still maintained the tale's feel of fiction. A nice mystical undertone added to rather than detracted from this story and the chemistry between the heroine and the hero was dynamically steamy. Marissa Campbell is an author to watch and who demonstrates great potential!

This book was really good and also not quite what I was expecting. I think I was looking more for the fiction in historical fiction, but this gave more of an emphasis on the historical....does that make sense?

I liked the characters Campbell created because they felt like real people to me. And I really enjoyed the aspects of Paganism throughout the novel. (Now I'm really interested in learning more about it.)

The one thing I didn't like was how dark and (sadly) realistic some parts were. That being said, it was a good book and I'd recommend it.

I spent the last few days immersed in Avelynn, which was such a treat. From the very first pages until the last I couldn't put it down, literally, just ask my hubby. Historical fiction is my favorite read so you had me there, but then to draw in the ancient religion of the Goddess & the Isle of Avalon, mix it with the steamy love scenes, and the suspense of the dark characters of Demus & Osric, then the savageness of the Viking battles... Kudos to you Marissa Campbell ! Wishing you continued success and joy!

I love a good historical romance, but I rarely find one that really sticks with me like AVELYNN. The story is beautifully written, weaving a tapestry of myth and ancient beliefs into the dark days of medieval England. If you are a fan of Diana Gabaldon's OUTLANDER and Philippa Gregory's LADY OF THE RIVERS and THE WHITE QUEEN, just roll them all together and take it back several hundred years, and there you will find AVELYNN. A must read for historical romance lovers.
