Mistletoe and Mr. Right

Rate this book
In "Mistletoe and Mr. Right," Jessica (not Jessie) takes a flying leap and follows her boyfriend home for the holidays for Christmas break, sure that Ireland will provide the perfect backdrop to the beginning of their happily ever after. But it turns out his family--and his gorgeous ex-girlfriend--don't feel the same way, and the only person making the trip worthwhile is the local farmhand, who has a way of showing up when Jessica needs him most . . . and least.

The holiday hijinks continue in "Sleigh Bells and Second Chances," when Jessica's best friend makes her own way across the pond! Christina Lake does not want to be away at Christmas, but it's her duty to babysit one of London's hottest bands at their last-minute concert on Christmas Eve . . . even though she had a fling with Cary, the band's lead singer, that never officially ended. Now forced to reconnect, Christina is starting to think that maybe London is exactly where she's supposed to be to get the perfect New Year's kiss--at least until she finds out that he's been lying the whole time. Can Cary find a way to prove himself before the clock strikes twelve? Or will the New Year ring in a new romance?

Lyla Payne wraps up two perfect holiday novellas, ties them with a ribbon of romance, and tops them with a light dusting of snow. Perfect to curl up with under the tree. Just add hot cocoa!

I've been publishing New Adult romance novels for a little over a year, starting with Broken at Love and continuing with the rest of the Whitman University series. I adore telling stories, discovering the little reasons people fall in love, and uncovering hidden truths in the world around us – past and present.

In my spare time I cuddle my two dogs, pretend to enjoy exercising so that I can eat as much Chipotle as I want, and harbor a deep and abiding hope that Zac Efron likes older women. I loves reading, of course, along with movies, traveling, and Irish whiskey.

I'm hard at work, ALWAYS, and hope to bring you more Whitman University antics and at least one more Lowcountry ghost tale before the end of the year.

Mistletoe and Mr. Right is by Lyla Payne.

Jessica MacFarlane has been dating Brennan Donnelly for four months. Jessica likes to have everything planned out. She has a plan for everything. But, her relationship with Brennan isn’t moving along as she thinks it should be. Brennan is super good looking, he could have any girl on campus he wanted. He’s kind and funny. But he lives in the moment. She has no idea where this might be going. So, she makes a rash decision on Christmas vacation to fly to where Brennan lives with his family, Fanore, Ireland, and spend Christmas with him. She thinks that maybe she can show him that she is the perfect girlfriend.

Related image

Things, though, didn’t exactly go as she planned. The first being a goat standing in the middle of the road as she came around a curve. The second is the oh so handsome Grady Callaghan, the farm hand. Grady always seems to know right when Jessie needs him.

“The guy seems to have some kind of Jessie in Distress radar.”

Round-the-World Travel: Staying Calm and Positive on the Road ...

Jessica hasn’t had a real Christmas since she was six years old so no matter how badly things are going with Brennan, she loves being a part of this picture perfect Christmas setting. Can she picture herself being a permanent part of this family?

First off, I can imagine the scenery of this Irish countryside so easily. The rolling green hills and the misty mornings and snow covered grounds. It all just makes me sigh. And I did love Jessica. I struggled a bit with her taking off like that and flying to Ireland, surprising her boyfriend and his family the way she did. But, as I got to know her and learned her story, I understand why she did it. I didn’t care for Brennan very much. He was too flippant for lack of a better word. For me, I could tell right away he never really was invested in the relationship. He was a here and now kind of guy. There is so much he should have told Jessica. Maybe four months isn’t all that long but there are things he should have shared with her.

Centre Door Knobs - the perfect accessory to your Christmas wreath ...

So, that leaves Grady. I loved Grady. He just saw Jessie, just instinctively knew what she needed. Time and time again, when it should have been Brennan, Grady was there for her. I loved the epilogue of this book. It was the perfect ending. I did enjoy this book, even though it is July and 95 degrees outside. It is a short little holiday story that is sure to warm your heart.

BLOG REVIEW:
https://passthefeels.wordpress.com/20...

Actual Rating: 2.75/5
**I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Bloomsbury, in exchange for an honest review**

So this book started off feeling promising but, for me, it just fell flat, although I did still enjoy it to some extent.

Let's talk about the characters shall we. Our main character, Jessica was both likeable and extremely annoying at the same time. Throughout parts of this book I found myself really liking her and then in others I was rolling my eyes. The boyfriend, Brennan, I never took a liking to throughout the whole novella, and I found their relationship to be quite boring and it just honestly didn't even feel real which I think was resolved at the end. Grady was the most likeable character for me, he provided the humour in the book, but even still I didn't become all that attached to him either.

The plot was very bland and didn't really move anywhere at all, but I suppose it is difficult being a novella. I feel like we were just stuck in the same place throughout the entire thing, and nothing really happened in terms of story development, like at all.

The writing however, I quite enjoyed, and I think Payne has the potential to write a really great novel in the future. The description of the setting was written wonderfully, it even made me feel cold/ like drinking all the warm things, even though I'm actually dying of heat here in Australia.

Overall, it was enjoyable in the way that it brought feelings of christmas and cosiness, but fell quite flat in terms of actual story development and characters.

MISTLETOE AND MR RIGHT - 5 stars
This one is definitely gonna be one to read every Christmas. The Donnelly's didn't think much of Jessica at first, mind you they didn't even know about her. I actually can't believe Jessica would fly from the states to Ireland after 4 months of dating to spend it with her boyfriends family. Mind you if she didn't she wouldn't have met Grady. I loved seeing there friendship blossom and glad they ended up together but also the break up between Jessica and Brennan was so sad. I absolutely loved this short book.

SLEIGH BELLS AND SECOND CHANCES - 5 stars
I didn't realise when I got this book that the stories would be linked and I love that.... I actually want Lyla Payne to continue both of their stores. I loved it!!! Everything was going so well with Christina and Cary I was waiting for the heartbreak. Man I felt for Christina, my heart broke. I'm glad she finally leant the truth and was able to forgive. Definitely reading this again next Christmas.

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher. This in no way impacted on my view.

I'm not sure if I've ever really read a Christmassy book like this, so when I noticed it was available to request, I immediately jumped at the chance. Mistletoe and Mr Right is actually a bind up of two different novellas, that have some overlap. I think the best thing to do would be to review each separately, which I'll do below.

The first story was called Mistletoe and Mr Right, and told the story of Jessica, who flew all the way from Texas to her boyfriend's house in Ireland to surprise him for the holidays. Have any of you seem the movie Leap Year, with Amy Adams and Matthew Goode? Well if you have, it's a lot like that. Jessica is a planner, and she wants to know if her boyfriend is in it for the long run, or whether the relationship should end sooner or later. When she arrives in Ireland, she doesn't make the best first impression, and it seems like her boyfriend's entire family hate her. And then, just to make everything better, her boyfriend's amazing ex-girlfriend turns up for the holidays.

I really loved Jessica! She was very abrupt, but I understood her wanting everything to be perfect and organised. She took the plunge to travel all the way across the Atlantic to visit a foreign land, where she only knew one person, and I feel like she dealt with all that was thrown at her in the best way. I wasn't a fan of her boyfriend, Brennan, from the get go, and that never changed for the entire book. Grady didn't help, to be honest; why would you want to be with Brennan when Grady was right there? The chemistry between Grady and Jessica was so tangible, and I shipped them so unbelievably hard!

This story was the cutest thing ever, and I would rate it at 4-4.5 stars! I'm pleased that they're be some overlap between characters in the second story, as I need more Jessica and Grady ASAP.

Tthe second story was Sleigh Bells and Second Chances, and was about Jessica's best friend, Christina, who was spending the Christmas following that in the first story as an intern for a major music label in London.
She's nervous for two reasons:
Reason 1: her estranged father whom she hasn't seen in four years lives in London, with her new stepmother and step sisters, and she has no fancy for seeing him again.
Reason 2: her summer fling who broke her heart, Cary, just happens to be the lead singer of the hot band she's working for, and she's never quite gotten over her heartbreak.
Seeing both of them after so long feels like torture, and old sorrows come rushing to the surface.

I enjoyed Christina's character, but after reading the first story, I felt sort of let down. i wasn't as much of a fan of the second half of the book, as Christina's tale was a lot more angst-y, and not nearly as cute and fluffy as Jessica's had been. I liked the way in which Christina was able to rebuild old relationships, especially with her father, who was actually really nice, and her step family, also extremely nice.
Cary, I'm still unsure on. I feel sort of ambivalent about him. And though I liked the chemistry between him and Christina, it was nowhere near that of Jessica and Grady. If this story had come first, I might have liked it more.
For Sleigh Bells and Secomd Changes, I'd rate it 3 stars - still enjoyable, but nothing really stood out.

I'd originally thought this was a YA book, but I think I'd class it now as more of an NA/Adult book. Mistletoe and Mr Right was more of an older YA, but still suitable for younger audiences, whereas Sleigh Bells and Second Chances had more adult content, which I'd say was for 18+. I don't want to censor anything though, if you're younger, or know someone who is, I just want to warn you that it may not her suitable for young YA readers.

Overall, the book was seriously enjoyable, and definitely got me in the Christmas spirit (though I have been since November 1st, tbh). It was a wonderful change to by usual books, and I think it might become a part of a Christmas tradition in the future.

3.5 stars!

Mistletoe and Mr. Right is made up for two novellas: Mistletoe and Mr. Right and Sleigh Bells and Second Chances.

We had the pleasure of reading the first story, Mistletoe and Mr. Right, last Christmas and reviewed it then. Check out our review for Mistletoe and Mr. Right to see our full thoughts on the adorable first story!

Today we will be sharing our thoughts on the second story, Sleigh Bells and Second Chances.

Becca and I had the pleasure of reading and reviewing Mistletoe and Mr. Right when it was first released last winter. At that time, it was only that one story. Since then they have added the second story, Sleigh Bells and Second Chances, which I jumped at the chance to read after enjoying the first novella so much. SB&SC is the story of Christina, who happens to be Jessica’s best friend, (Jessica is the MC in Mistletoe and Mr. Right, in case you weren’t sure. ;)) ), and her Christmas holiday, which she is forced to spend in London with it’s hottest band, instead of vacationing somewhere warm with her family. It’s her job, so she doesn’t have a choice. But what makes it even worse: the lead singer is her ex. She had a summer fling with him, after which he up and left. It took her months to get over him, so working with him will be a challenge. Little does she know this Christmas holiday will be a load of chaos, to say the least.

“I’ve learned the hard way that pain isn’t something that goes away, or eases, because we pretend it’s not there.”
I really enjoyed this story. When comparing these two stories, I think I connected with Jessica in M&MR on a deeper level, so I ended up liking that story a bit more. Christina was a tougher character for me to really relate to. I did enjoy the band aspects though, as music in books is a bit of an obsession of mine. Though there were some scenes on the sexy side, they were very minimal and low on the steamy scale. I did enjoy the chemistry between Christina and Cary, it just took me a little bit to really buy into their romance. I also really liked her extended family. They added a lot to the overall story on a much sweeter side.

This is definitely the perfect read for this time of year. I adore Christmassy books, and this was no exception. The Christmas feel, mixed with the chilly temps and warm beverages, makes for a very enjoyable reading experience. If you’re looking for a fun Christmas story to read over the holidays, I would definitely recommend this set of adorable novellas. Both are sure to brighten your Christmas spirit, as well as bring about the warm fuzzy feelings.

An advance copy of this title was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. My thoughts are my own.

This review can also be found at The Starry-Eyed Revue.

Mistletoe and Mr. Right was just the fun holiday read I needed on a Friday night after a rough week at work.  It had everything I want in a holiday story: romance, family togetherness, and adventures in the snow...not mention private sleigh rides. And for the first time in what feels like forever, I was able to finish the book in one sitting, since it only came in at 150 pages.

Jessica is a planner. In fact, she's got a ten year plan that starts as soon as she graduates college. And her plan includes marrying Brennan, her boyfriend of four months, who Jessica believes would be the perfect man to spend the rest of her life with. He just doesn't know it yet. Which is why she takes it upon herself to jet across the sea to visit him and his family in Ireland over Christmas break. Obviously this was a bad idea, but it becomes even more apparent once Jessica arrives.

Brennan is rather distant and short with Jessica during her entire trip. It doesn't help matters that his beautiful ex-girlfriend is spending Christmas with the family. Or that Jessica can't get the handsome farmhand out of her head. I think it's glaringly obvious from nearly the beginning of the story -- and even before that, if you read the summary -- that a love triangle (square?) is at the heart of this story but it becomes about so much more than that.

Jessica has some deep-seated issues that even Brennan doesn't know about. In fact, those issues are pretty much the catalyst for her ten year plan and everything that led up to it. The handsome farmhand Grady has just as many issues, and they have this immediate connection, one that leads them to disclose their histories to each other without reservations. Well, after they got past their initial loathing. :) Even Brennan's former flame has a tragedy in her past that gave me pause. I found it impressive that the author could flesh out her characters in only 150 pages and provide them with enough backstory so as not to feel like throwaway characters, despite the shortness of the novel.

I loved reading about Jessica's blundering experiences as she tried to fit in and garner favor with Brennan's family. Some moments were cringe-inducing in their awkwardness, but it felt genuine. (I should know...I had a somewhat similar experience the first time I met my husband's family.) Still, Lyla Payne brought the swoons in the end, and she made herself a new fan in the process. I will definitely be checking out more of her work now.

I don't know if it's this time of year that's making me excited over anything Christmas related, but I absolutely adored this. Before going into Mistletoe and Mr. Right, I had no idea that it was a bind-up of two novellas.

The first one, with the same title, Mistletoe and Mr. Right, followed Jessica on her venture to Ireland, in hopes of surprising her boyfriend and his family for the holidays. This one stole my heart a little more than the second novella, Sleigh Bells and Second Chances, which follows Christina and her rekindling romance with her past summer fling, now turned rock-star.

Sleigh Bells and Second Chances was adorable, don't get me wrong, but how can it compare to Christmas in Ireland with a charismatic, husky farmhand named Grady. The setting in the first novella was wonderful, filled with sleigh rides, baking, and c'mon, Ireland. Do I need to say more? And of course, a little family drama to keep it interesting.

Both stories slightly entwined, which I appreciated, especially for the fact of having more Grady within the pages. Although completely different stories, it was nice having both feature the similar idea of everything happens for a reason.

Two perfect holiday stories for the Christmas Season.

Mistletoe & Mr. Right is a sweet holiday read!

If you’re like me, you love holiday romance… and if you’re looking for something quick and satisfying in that genre, then definitely grab this story from Lyla Payne.

Jessica is a little high strung… she’s got plans for her life and if she expects everything to fall into place, she’s got to make sure her current boyfriend is on the same page as she is. Only he’s in Ireland for the holidays… but that isn’t going to deter her.

A long plane ride, a harrowing car trip and an almost goat murder later, she shows up on his family’s porch to surprise him and spend the holidays. Only she doesn’t get the exact reception she was hoping for, and she ends up finding a connection with someone completely unexpected.

Payne writes a painfully, awkward experience for Jessica. It was hard to read it from her point of view and see how hard she wanted to fit in, only to find that she really didn’t. But I have to say that it felt completely real… so real that I just wanted to hug the girl most of the time.

Jessica has some deep seeded issues that explain a lot of her behavior, but I have to say that I think I would have liked a bit more depth on those, as well as getting to know Grady on a personal level a bit more. I know it’s hard to do with novellas, but I felt that I just wanted a little bit more so that I could grab on to that connection a bit more.

This one wraps up nicely and with some definite swoon! Overall, a sweet and lovely holiday novella that you should definitely grab this holiday season!

The second novella in this book is Sleigh Bells & Second Chances and I think I enjoyed this one a bit more than the first! Christina Lake is headed overseas for work this holiday season and while it’s a great opportunity for her, she’s not looking forward to possibly seeing her estranged father and definitely not excited to work with the IT band of the moment due to some history between her and the lead singer.

But she’s not going to let this opportunity pass her by, she’s moved on… right. She can handle it …right?

Cary is bound and determined to make things right, between him and Christina but how can he do that when she thinks everything they ever had was really a lie?

Second chance stories are some of my favorite… the couple has that base friendship in their history and if it’s done well, you can see glimpses of the past influence what is happening now and Payne did it really well here. But “Second Chances” doesn’t apply only to Cary in this story. Christina’s dad has a lot of making up to do for the past few years as well.

I really loved the mending of both relationships and how Payne goes about it. I appreciated Christina’s hesitancy in both relationships but I love that she put herself and her heart out there again.

The twist… I had an inkling something wonky had happened … it’s not necessarily hidden, but I had thought it was a bit different than what it turned out to be, so that was a pleasant surprise as well.

It’s no surprise that I’m a fan of Lyla Payne and these novellas are a prime reason why… She writes realistic, fun characters who you can’t help but cheer for as you turn the pages. Let’s also not forget that her guys are sexy and swoony and these stories will definitely get in the holiday spirit… or at least want to head overseas and find a rockstar or Irishman… or both. *books plane ticket*

Thank you to the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.

Two Amazing Christmas Tales
I couldn't get enough of this story of Christmas in Ireland for Jessica MacFarlane. Surprising her boyfriend , Brennan Donnelly, and his family for Christmas seems like a great idea until she finds herself desperately trying to impress his family and digging her way out of the ensuing mishaps. From run-ins with the family goat to recipe disasters, I was rooting for Jessica to catch a break. Just when she thinks things can't get any worse, in walks Brennan's ex-girlfriend, Katie. Ouch.

Family friend and farmhand, Grady Callaghan, continually pops up to bail Jessica out of scrapes or offer support when Brennan slips in his boyfriend duties. He has a knack for getting under Jessica's skin, yet his help has always come at the perfect time. Chemistry sizzles between them confusing Jessica and attempting to derail her perfectly laid out plan.

Jessica watches the Donnelly family withe a mixture of awe and envy as they represent all that she longs for. Of them alI, I love Grandpa Donnelly so much. His ornery spunk and sharp tongue make conversations with him interesting. My favorite Grandpa moment sums up this wonderful story really well, “Sometimes roads in life don’t lead the place you think when you set out. Don’t be too daft to realize when you’ve gotten to where you belong, anyway.”

This story is a must read, and it's impossible not to fall in love with Ireland reading the vivid descriptions of tradition, culture, and beautiful countryside. I have always hoped to visit Ireland someday, and this story served to stoke that flame yet again!

Sleighbells and Second Chances features Christina Lane, Jessica's roommate, and Cary White a British rockstar and Christina's summer romance from four years ago. Despite the lingering heartache, they are forced to confront the unresolved feelings from their abrupt separation. Christina's job as an publicist intern sends her to Britain during the holidays, and not only is she brought face to face with Cary, but she has to decide if she wants to reconcile with her estranged father.

Christina's struggle between wanting to trust vs. keeping the walls she's built firmly intact truly resonated. Her unresolved sense of abandonment makes her question her judgement and creates an internal tug of war. No matter how many times she tells herself she's moved on, that piece of her heart belongs firmly to Cary White, and it's evident in their magnetism. No matter how much passion exists between them, she knows Cary is hiding something from her.

I truly loved this story, and I would be hard pressed to choose a favorite between the two. The emotions felt close to the surface, and Lyla knows how to take the ordinary (romance) and turn it into the extraordinary. This story flew by, and it certainly put me in the mood for the upcoming holidays. You're missing out if you haven't read BOTH of these fantastic Christmas tales!

You can read this and many other reviews on my YA book blog The White Unicorn!

An Open Letter To Mistletoe and Mr. Right,

You're cute. Cute like one of those crappy made for TV movies that we all love so much. Trust me, even though it might not sound like it, this is a really high compliment coming from me. 'Cause God knows that I love me some crappy yet adorable Christmas movies. Throw in the fact that you take place in Ireland and I'm hooked. Thanks for being a cute, quick, fun, Christmas read!

-The White Unicorn

This novella is amazingly cute! Payne knows just how to work a shorter story and it made this book a really fun read. I do have to admit that I wish it would have been a bit longer, because I felt like some of the plot points were a bit rushed, but that being said, I think that Payne did really well based on the length of the book.

At only 150 pages, this is the perfect book to read in a sitting or two snuggled next to the fire. It will be able to fill that Christmas movie feel you want, but still allow you to read a book at the same time. The plot isn't that deep, but in the few moments that are, it really shines. When you add in the fact that some really ridiculous things happen and that Payne has a knack for comedic timing, you know you're in for a good time. Sure, the plot is extremely predictable, but that's not really all that surprising. Plus, it's set in Ireland, so you get a little book travel in as well!

The cast of characters is a good one. The back stories could have been fleshed out a bit more, because I feel like it would have added to the story, but I also fear that the story would have lost some of it cuteness along the way if that would have been the case. Payne gives as much detail to the background characters as her main ones and I think this really helped the novel in so many ways. It took you into her world quickly and I really liked that.

For a NA romance, this book is really clean and I liked that. It's one of those books that anyone could read and smile over. Which brings us around to the romance. I found Jessie's 10 year plan to be a little annoying, and she seemed really clueless in her relationship, but she had guts, so I liked her. Brennan is so removed from what's going on that I never really liked him. And Grady was pretty great and understanding and handsome. Some would say that this is a triangle, but it never felt like one to me. The story is more about Jessie than her relationships and I thought that was a good call. Not to say that the romance wasn't swoony and adorable, because it was.

If you're looking for a short, sweet, Christmas time read, pick this little jewel up!

Hey peaches!

My very first hardcover is in stores TODAY! If you read last year's ebook release, there's still something in this for you - a brand new SECOND STORY that's about Christina, a girl who lands her dream internship only to find herself face-to-face with the guy who broke her heart years before...and now happens to be part of Britain's hottest new band.

It takes place in London at Christmas time, and follows Christina through a second chance at love, relationships, and the future she's been dreaming of forever!

I hope you love it! It's available online, of course, but also in your local B&N and Sam's Club. Perfect for holiday snuggling by the fire or wrapping up as a gift. Happy reading!

This book was jointly reviewed by myself and my co-blogger, Becca!

A perfectly-sweet holiday story!

Ireland is like a promise that life doesn’t have to be complicated. That a roof and family, some land and friends are all a person needs to be happy.

THE STORY:
Becca: Mistletoe and Mr Right was just so adorable, light and fun. It was short at only 150 pages, but I felt like I got the entire story regardless of the length. I absolutely loved that it was set in Ireland, a country that I have always wanted to visit. After reading this it made me want to visit during the Christmas season. The story centers around the MC Jessica showing up in Ireland to surprise her college boyfriend Brennan during the Holidays. They had only been dating a short time so it was both a little crazy and kind of sweet! The way that Lyla Payne describes the scenery and the warmth of Brennan’s Family home is so beautiful and endearing. I felt the warmth and the family love and of course the romance :)

Lisa: I’m not usually a fan of novellas, but this is definitely one to read. The length was perfect… short enough to read in a sitting or two, yet told the entire story from beginning to end without feeling rushed or leaving out important parts. It was the perfect story to get me in the holiday spirit as well!

I do have to mention there’s a love-triangle-ish feel to this story. Since I don’t mind love triangles at all, this really didn’t bother me. But for the people that aren’t fans, consider yourself warned. It wasn’t over-the-top in any sense and was done extremely well and perfectly realistic, but I still felt it should be mentioned. I honestly feel this is the type of story that really thrives from this type of issue. It just worked.

The rain turned to snow sometime during the night, pristine white blankets covering the hills add the perfect ambiance to the late-December morning. A White Christmas in Ireland. This trip can’t be a mistake.

THE CHARACTERS:
Lisa: Jessica is a planner… big time. She has it in her head that she needs to know if this relationship with her boyfriend is going anywhere or not. And what better way to determine that than to show up unexpectedly at his parents’ house on Christmas Eve. This is just bound for trouble… and a load of laughs! I loved how persistent Jessica was. She had to know if this relationship was marriage material, or if she was just wasting her time. The idea of just waiting it out was completely incomprehensible to her.

We also get the pleasure of meeting Grady, your stereotypical Irishman. Trust me, I think everyone would agree with me that this guy is classically Irish. (And my husband is Irish, so I can totally say that with a HUGE smile. :) ) Jessica clashes quite a bit with this Irish family, and several scenes were laugh-out-loud funny! Aside from the humorous moments, there were also romantic moments, and even a couple sad ones. These characters really brought this story home for me. I was shocked at how well I felt like I knew these characters in such a short period of time.

Becca: “I was shocked at how well I felt like I knew these characters in such a short period of time.” I felt the same way Lisa! At first I wasn’t sure if I was going to like Jessica, but her over planning and semi-neurotic behavior was actually lovable and endearing. I just wanted to hug her and tell her everything would be OK. I have to say that I fell a little in love with the Irishmen in this story :) The Donnelly men were perfect: Brennan the typical, clueless male, his Father the huge but lovable intimidator and even Grandpa Donelly… he was just hilarious and had me LOLing at his antics! Enter Grady Callaghan… Oh my he was my fave! I loved how he was always there to help Jessica out of each and every ridiculous debacle she found herself in… no matter how reluctant a damsel she was. This cast of characters were just so charming and lovable and I honestly felt like part of the Family myself :)

“Sometimes roads in life don’t lead to the place you think when you set out. Don’t be too daft to realize when you’ve gotten to where you belong, anyway.”

OVERALL:
Becca: Time for true confessions… I am a Christmas movie nut! I watch my favorites every year from A Christmas Story to Christmas Vacation! I even watch the made for TV ones on Hallmark and ABC Family *blushes and hangs head* I know they are cheesy and silly and have sugary sweet HEA’s but I love them! Mistletoe and Mr Right kind of reminded me of those movies. The ones you can’t help but love because they give you warm tingles all over and a huge smile! That’s exactly how this book made me feel and I loved every second! I have read a couple of Lyla Payne’s NA books and really enjoyed them. She is an awesome writer who develops her characters and setting so well and pulls you right into the story. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more books by her!

Lisa: I totally agree. Though I’ve never read anything from Payne before, I’m definitely a fan. I will be sure to watch out for more books from her in the future. This was exactly what I was looking for at this time… halfway through December and getting all set for Christmas. This is my favorite time of year, and including books that highlight this time are so special to me. This is a book I will probably re-read in the future. A good holiday book is hard to find, and this one was great. <3

Mistletoe and Mr. Right is a collection of two holiday novellas focusing on college roomies Jessica and Christina. First up, Jessica travels to Ireland on a whim to find out once and for all if her "looks good on paper" boyfriend is marriage material. It's a surprise to him and his family when she shows up on his doorstep unannounced two days before Christmas, and well, you know how well surprises like that usually go over.

Mistletoe and Mr. Right was funny and sweet. Prim, proper and orderly Jessica is a complete fish out of water among the Donnelly family. She's ignorant to their customs, and it's evident that she's messing with his mother's otherwise perfect Christmas. This does nothing to bolster Jessica's flagging self-esteem.

Enter Grady, the Donnelly's employee and a man that does nothing to coddle Jessica. He's a believer in going after what you want, not settling for what you think you need. And that line of thinking rocks Jessica's world and causes her to question everything - her relationship with Brennan, her future career... herself.

The idea that this guy I've never met thinks it's possible to change the world - that I could change the world - opens up windows in front of my eyes. In my soul.

The second story in the book, Sleigh Bells and Second Chances, focuses on Jessica's roommate Christina, and takes place one year after the events in Mistletoe and Mr. Right. Chris is being sent to London for New Year's to be the personal assistant for one of the hottest bands in the world. What makes this situation painfully awkward is that four years earlier, she fell in love with the lead singer, and he left her without a word.

I think I liked Sleigh Bells and Second Chances better, only because I'm such a sucker for a good second chance love story. And this one was fantastic. There's the lingering mystery throughout as to why Cary left Chris at the end of that summer four years before in the first place. From the very beginning, it seemed as if he was still totally into her. So, you knew there was more at play here than what met the eye.

Chris has never forgotten, nor gotten over, Cary. Despite her also still being furious at him for breaking her heart, Cary is determined to wear her down and convince her to trust him again. And this time, he isn't going anywhere. When the truth comes out about why he left, though, there may be nothing he can do about her leaving him this time.

In addition to the story between Chris and Cary, there is also a side story about Chris and her father, who lives in London with his second wife and her daughters. Since her father divorced her mother when she was a child, Chris hasn't had much contact with him, mostly by his choice. As you can expect, that has made Chris extremely bitter toward him and hesitant toward his overtures now. I felt SO BADLY for Chris in regards to her relationship with her father. That part of this novella was so compelling.

Sleigh Bells was more sexy and dramatic than Mistletoe, which was more humorous and sweet. It was awesome getting a taste of both emotions in one package. I also loved the small connection between the two stories - Chris is mentioned and has a few conversations with Jessica in Mistletoe, and Jessica comes to visit Chris in London in Sleigh Bells. It made the two very different stories go together very nicely.

And, can we talk for a second about how amazing these settings are?? Mistletoe takes place in Ireland and Sleigh Bells takes place in England. The countries are depicted in full color with Lyla's words, and it was part of the fascination and charm I had with this book.

Consider me a reformed Scrooge - at least when it comes to holiday-themed books. There is still no way that I will ever put up a Christmas tree before the first week of December.

Two light, cute & fluffy holiday romances...

"Is she going to be okay? I ask, shuffling up behind the guy and chancing a peek over his shoulder.
He doesn't answer but reaches down, prodding her with one hand and lifting with the other until she gets her legs underneath her and crawls to her feet. The goat gives a quick shake, spraying dirty water all over my jeans and the mystery man's olive-green jacket, then hops off into the grass.
"Is she limping?"
"Probably. She just got ran over by a car."

MISTLETOE AND MR. RIGHT is an anthology of two charming Christmas-time romances by Lyla Payne. The two stories are linked via the heroines of each story. They were close friends and the two tales are their respective holiday happy ever after stories.

MISTLETOE AND MR. RIGHT was the first story in the book. It was previously published as a standalone. This was the story of Jessica MacFarlane, Brennan Donnelly and Grady Callaghan. No worries, the three-some does pare down to two. It is set in Fanore, Ireland. As the story opened, Jessica has flown to the Emerald Isle to surprise Brennan, who she has been dating for a few months, at Christmas. Unbeknownst to Brennan, Jessica has a timetable that she had previously laid out that required her to be married and having children soon. She was hoping that her sudden appearance would set a flame to their romance which had seemed to be a bit lackluster lately. She needs Brennan to get with the program and she wants to demonstrate to Brennan and his family that she is the perfect girl for him.

Unfortunately, her arrival doesn't go as planned. First, she hits the family's prized goat as she enters their property and, second, Grady Callaghan, the family's super sexy farm hand comes to the goat's and her rescue. In fact, throughout her stay, Grady seems to make an appearance when needed. “The guy seems to have some kind of Jessie in Distress radar.” This story had a lesson to it. Sometimes you think you want something, but you really don't. AND sometimes, what you really want is right before you, but you have to open your eyes to see it.

SLEIGH BELLS AND SECOND CHANCES was the second story in the book. It had not be previously published before now. This was the story of Christina Lane, Jessica's roommate, and Cary White, a British rock star. It was mostly set in and around London, England. As the story opened, Christina had been assigned a public relations stint with Cary's hot English band. The band aspect of this read made for some fascinating reading. Christina was committed to doing a good job while being hesitant about doing so as, Cary, the band's leader, had previously left her heart in shambles after they'd had an intense summer fling and, also, because she is estranged from her famous author dad, who also resides in London. This story was infused with a plethora of drama and parlayed a lesson to always trust your heart.

Bottom-line: If you enjoy light, cute and fluffy Christmas romances, you should check out MISTLETOE AND MR. RIGHT! These stories would be perfect to delve into with a cup of hot chocolate and a comfy easy chair.

Full Review on The Candid Cover

Mistletoe and Mr. Right by Lyla Payne is comprised of two novellas that take place over Christmas break. Both of the stories have such picturesque settings, and the amusement of the first one in particular stood out to me. I did find that this book has a lot of drama, but because the characters are so well-developed for such short stories in a way that we can understand their actions, I was mostly willing to overlook this. This would be a great read for those looking for a more casual Christmas story.

The first story. Mistletoe and Mr. Right, follows Jessica, who travels to Ireland to surprise her boyfriend for the holidays. However, things get complicated when his ex-girlfriend also appears and Jessica gets closer with a farmhand. This is such a fun and quirky story, and I loved reading about Jessica’s mishaps as she tries to fit in with her boyfriend’s family–including accidentally running over their goat. The setting is also a great backdrop for a Christmas story.

❀ TWO SHORT STORIES IN ONE

The second story, Sleigh Bells and Second Chances, takes a different turn. We tag along with Christina, a publicity intern for a boy band over the holidays. She has history with the leader of the band, and they start to reconnect, but they are forbidden from dating each other due to the nature of their jobs. I love any story about music and the arts, and the London setting also interested me. I wasn’t a fan of Christina’s constant drama, but I will say that I was impressed with how developed the characters in both of the stories are for a short 150 pages each. I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the first story, but it still has its highlights.

❀ LOTS OF DRAMA

One thing to note about both of these stories is that they are heavy on drama. This, in addition to the lack of winter activities, doesn’t make them feel very Christmassy. Instead, these stories almost feel like regular contemporaries that could have taken place at any time. This can be both a strength and a weakness, depending on what you’re looking for. For me, however, I would have liked to see more descriptions of their beautiful settings at Christmas and some festive fun to really get into the holiday spirit.

❀ LACKS A CHRISTMASSY ATMOSPHERE

Mistletoe and Mr. Right by Lyla Payne contains two novellas that are set over the holidays. I loved the settings in both, and the first story is particularly entertaining. However, the book has its fair share of drama, and I felt like it lacks a Christmassy atmosphere. Despite this, those looking for a seasonal read that isn’t overwhelmingly festive will enjoy this one.

What A Happy Christmas Tale!

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring...but lust refused to settle in for a long winter's nap. She might be all nestled, snug in her bed, by why, oh why, do visions of the wrong guy dance in her head?
Jessica, (not Jessie), figures that nothing could be better than a trip to the Emerald Isle for Christmas break. So she takes a flying leap and follows her boyfriend home for the holidays, not only sure that he will finally agree they're destined for each other, but also that Ireland will provide the perfect backdrop to the beginning of their happily-ever-after.
But it turns out his family—and his gorgeous ex-girlfriend—don't feel the same way, and even the family goat seems to be conspiring against her well-laid plans. The only person making the trip worthwhile is the very last one she should be thinking about, but Grady, the local farmhand, has a way of showing up when Jessica needs him most...and least.
USA Today bestselling author Lyla Payne wraps up the perfect holiday novella, ties it with a ribbon of romance, and tops it with a light dusting of snow. Perfect to curl up with under the tree. Just add hot cocoa!
Through out most of the book, you want to slap Jessica along side the head. Brannen is a great guy, but just not 'her' great guy. Jessica is a thought provoking, level headed, gal, use to being on her own. She proves to be spot on smart in the end. Its a really great Novella, not only about Christmas, but about forever. 4 stars.

These stories are so cute. If you’ve been frustrated at the lack of truly fluffy new adult novels, you’re going to want to grab these sweet Christmas romances ASAP. Payne’s done a great job creating adorable, shippy romances that seem like the sort of thing you might watch on ABC Family.

The first story, “Mistletoe and Mr. Right.” does not have any mistletoe in it, which I find somewhat puzzling. The story itself is very similar to the movie The Family Stone, which I happen to love. It’s a ridiculously quick time frame on the romance, but, if you can roll with that, I think Payne does a really nice job with it. The two do share a bond of sorts, and it managed to keep me from rolling my eyes, which is a serious accomplishment.

The second story, “Sleigh Bells and Second Chances,” doesn’t have a sleigh ride, though the first story did. This one is another form of romance catnip for me, with a celebrity romance. This one’s pulled off really well, I think, and it’s enhanced by the family plot line. Plus, I’m down for a Christina having sexy adventures with a celebrity. I mean, come on.

Super cute if you’re looking for holiday reads or fluffy romances. Especially if you’re into British and Irish boys.

This is the first book that I've read by Lyla Payne, and I am now looking forward to reading more books written by her. Mistletoe and Mr. Right was a fun, quick read. I thought it was really interesting that this story took place in Ireland, as we got to experience an Irish Christmas, and I enjoyed learning about some of the customs.

To be honest, I could not relate to Jessie at first. She flew all the way to England to share Christmas with a guy who she had barely started dating. I thought that she was crazy at first! I was also baffled that, with the limited time she had, she barely seemed to spend any time with Brennan.

My favorite parts of the story was Jessie's banter with Grady. I really liked him, and appreciated that he didn't put up with much crap! It was super refreshing. I have to say, I wanted more at the end of this story. I would have liked to see how things played out in the future, as opposed to where it left off.

All in all, I definitely recommend Mistletoe and Mr. Right to anyone looking for a clean New Adult, Christmas story, filled with both humor and serious content.

2 stars for the first story and 4 for the second, so I figured a 3 is a safe overall rating.

I could barely finish the first story and I don't know why. I just found it extremely boring and predictable, and I usually like my predictable happy endings. It took me three days to get through it.
Then I started the second and read it in one sitting. I enjoyed it so much more. It was predictable but I wanted this one to be (if that makes any sense).
Glad I picked it up because I love holiday books and there doesn't seem to be many of those in YA. Well not enough for my liking.

Two cute and enjoyable holiday romances but nothing that hasn't been done before. It definitely fits if you're looking for fun, quick Christmasy stories but don't expect to be blown away. I did enjoy the first one a bit more than the second even with its similarities to the movie Leap Year. The second seemed a bit long to me to be a novella but I did find the family interactions interesting. Like I said, it was cute, fun, and fluffy but won't make my favorites list.

What a delight! I loved the setting almost as much as the characters. Some of my happiest memories are of the time I spent in Ireland with my husband. This book helped me relive them, and provided me with a highly entertaining story on top of it. Need a break? Spend some time with Jessica and Grady. You'll be glad you did.

THE ABSOLUTE PERFECT CHRISTMAS READ.

The book contains two short-stories that are perfectly apart but still have characters in common. I loved the first one and was sad when it was already over in the middle of the book. But then I started reading the second short-story and let me tell you.... I was not disappointed!! The second one contained everything I want from a cheesy novel, bands, a troubling past, drama and then some more drama and of course a lot of christmassy love!

solid 5 stars.
